Top seed Barbora Krejcikova reached the second round of the Cleveland Open on Monday. The Czech got through American lucky loser, Francesca Di Lorenzo, 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 19 minutes. Krejcikova won 79% of her first-serve points and 75% points on return on Di Lorenzo’s serve.
She lost her serve once across the match and went on to convert five of the 11 break points that came her way on her opponent’s serve. In the second round, Krejcikova will play another American in Bernarda Pera. Pera ousted Japanese qualifier Eri Hozumi, 6-1, 6-2 in 64 minutes.
Second seed Martina Trevisan also made it to the round-of-16. The Italian posted a comeback win over Mayar Sherif, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and eight minutes. Trevisan had nine double faults in the match. But she went on to win 68% of her first-serve points to Sherif’s 58%.
For the match, Trevisan finished with just one break more than Sherif. While the latter lost her serve on five occasions, Trevisan did slightly better, saving six of the 10 break points she faced. In the second round, Trevisan will play Shuai Zhang.
Zhang defeated Katerina Siniakova 6-2, 6-1 in 59 minutes.
Cleveland Open: Sofia Kenin fights her way back to triumph
Sofia Kenin ended her streak of losses by winning her first match since January, at the Adelaide International.
Kenin defeated qualifier Dalayna Hewitt in an American derby, 6-4, 6-3. She will next meet fifth seed Irina-Camelia Begu. The fifth-seeded Romanian won her opener on Sunday against American wildcard, Peyton Stearns, 6-4, 6-3.
Lastly, third seed Ekaterina Alexandrova also moved into the round-of-16 on Monday. Alexandrova beat Lauren Davis, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 after two hours and nine minutes of play. For a place in the quarter-finals of the Cleveland Open, Alexandrova will now take on Madison Brengle.
Brengle won against Varvara Gracheva, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in their opening-round clash.
