‘They allow me to have mental clarity’

Serbian star Hamad Medjedovic says that Novak Djokovic is always there when he needs advice and that he is very grateful to have the “greatest player of all time” as a mentor. Medjedovic, who turned 19 last month, is currently the 262nd player in the world.

In early July, Medjedovic clinched his first Challenger title by winning the Luedenscheid tournament as a qualifying player. Medjedovic is considered one of the most promising Serbian talents and Djokovic wants to make sure the 19-year-old is in the right position to succeed.

“He is my mentor. He sends me messages asking if I need anything or giving me advice. I am very happy to have the greatest player of all time [as] my mentor,” Medjedovic said when referring to Djokovic’s tutelage, according to Damian Kust.

When Medjedovic’s father, Eldin, met with Djokovic, he was speechless after an extremely kind and generous gesture from Djokovic. When Djokovic put on paper what needed to be done to help Medjedovic take the next step in his career, Eldin Medjedovic told Djokovic that it costs a lot of money.

Djokovic then said that he would be the one to cover all financial expenses in Medjedovic’s development. “Novak is trying very hard to help Hamad,” Eldin Medjedovic told Sportal. “He was giving me ideas, what to do with Hamad, and I remember saying to him: ‘Nole, I’m sorry, but everything costs money!

He goes on, suggests a coach to me, talks about how we will do it, what we will do and adds:’ It’s Hamad who has to train, I’ll do the rest!’ I tell him again: ‘Nole, that costs money!”

Nole is a 21-time Grand Slam champion

Novak Djokovic pays close attention to what he eats on training days.

“When I rise from the bed I start with warm water and lemon to help my body detoxify. And then I would have celery juice on an empty stomach. Then I’ll take a break and have my green smoothie with different algae and different fruits and superfoods and great supplements that I use that allow me to have mental clarity and feel good.

I eat a lot of fruits for the first part of the day and salads. I don’t like to eat any food that would require too much energy for digestion, especially in the first part of the day because that’s when I need the most energy for my training.

So I’m keeping things quite light and I would have grains like quinoa, wild rice, sweet potato and normal potato, like steamed or boiled”.
