Cameron Norrie admitted that “nothing was working” for him at the start of his match versus Andy Murray but was glad he was able to overturn the deficit and win in three sets. Norrie, the ninth-seeded player in the Cincinnati draw, recovered from a set down to beat Murray 3-6 6-3 6-4 in just over two and a half hours of play and progress into the last-16.
“I just needed to put a lot of balls in the court,” Norrie said after the match, per the ATP website. “At the start of the match nothing was really working for me, I was not really being physical, I was not really executing how I liked.
Credit to Andy, he came out and was using his slice a lot, coming forward well. He reads the game incredibly, so credit to him and it was not easy towards the end, I managed just to find a way”.
Norrie on avoiding going down by a set and a break
After winning the first set, Murray missed a routine volley on a break point in the opening game of the second set.
Norrie then broke Murray in the eighth game for a 5-3 lead, before serving out for the second set in the following game. In the sixth game of the third set, Norrie saved three break points to avoid going down by a break in key moments.
Then, Norrie broke Murray in the ninth game and served out for the match in the 10th game. “Honestly, I turned away and I thought the volley was on the line, but it’s just those moments,” Norrie added..
“There were a couple in the second and third set as well, when he had a couple of break chances, and then I was able to play the bigger points a little bit better. It came down to one or two points and that was the difference”.
Norrie plays next American wildcard Ben Shelton, who upset Casper Ruud. Shelton has already claimed two upset wins in Cincinnati, having beaten Ruud and Lorenzo Sonego. Shelton, 19, hasn’t yet officially turned pro as he is still listed in college. Norrie and Shelton are set to clash for the first time.
