By Charles Brun: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed that he’s spoken to Tyson Fury, and he’s been informed by him that he’s retiring from the sport.
What Sulaiman didn’t say is whether Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) has vacated his WBC heavyweight title or if he’s going to hold onto it for a year as previously said he would.
If Fury hasn’t vacated his WBC belt, it’s a good bet that this is a fake retirement and that he’ll come out of the woodwork shortly after next week’s rematch between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk.
Why would Fury fake his retirement? It’s a good question for a psychologist to answer. I guess Fury may have an inner need to see an outpouring of love from fans.
One way of receiving oodles of praise from fans is to tell them you’re retiring. The problem with Fury is he’s now wearing it out, and it’s become a running joke to where fans don’t believe him anymore.

A healthier way of receiving praise from fans would be for Fury to get off his backside and fight the likes of Joe Joyce, Daniel Dubois, and the Joshua vs. Usyk II winner.
The sanctioning bodies need to get better at immediately freeing up the belts of their champions when they begin talking about retiring, as Fury has done incessantly since his win over Dillian Whyte last April.
It’s predictable that Fury will immediately unretire if Joshua gets lucky and defeats Usyk in their rematch on August 20th. Fury is like a shark in the water, and he knows Joshua is easy prey for him.
That’s a fight that Fury wins in his sleep, as Joshua is on his last legs at this stage of his career. Fury knows how much money he can make fighting Joshua, so he’s not going to pass that easy bank heist.
What we probably won’t see is Fury coming out of retirement to fight Usyk if he’s victorious against Joshua again. It’s painfully obvious that Fury wants NO part of a fight against Usyk. Hence, his demand of $500 million for him to face the talented Ukrainian.
