World No. 34 Tommy Paul said he felt he “did a lot of things well” in a shock victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Montreal Masters second round. On Wednesday, Paul recovered from a set and two breaks down to make the biggest upset of the tournament so far, beating Alcaraz 6-7 (4) 7-6 (7) 6-3.

In the eighth game of the third set – when Alcaraz was serving to stay in the match – Paul missed out on four match points. Paul maybe missed out on four match points in the eighth game, but realized his fifth match point on his serve in the following game.

On his fifth match, Paul went to the net and it was a decision that paid off. “It’s nice to finish matches at the net,” Paul said after the win, per the ATP website. “He hit a pretty nice passing shot there at the last point and I covered the line well, volleyed it well.

I think I did a lot of things well today. I played a good level of tennis, especially there in the third set, so I’m happy to get through”.

After winning a tight first set, Alcaraz broke Paul twice early in the second set and had a 4-1 lead.

That’s when Paul’s stunning comeback started. “I just felt like I was in his service games,” said Paul. “In the second set I felt like I could break. I didn’t expect to get two breaks back and serve for the set, [but] I felt like I was playing comfortable tennis overall.

I stuck to the game plan and played well”. Alcaraz was playing his first match on hard this summer. “I think I got him in his first match on the hard courts,” Paul added. “So hopefully when we play next time, he [also] doesn’t have too many hard-court matches [under his belt]”.
