‘Roger Federer is a genius’, says top coach

While 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer is famous for being a highly disciplined athlete, this has not always been the case. Contrasting so much with the pristine image of the Swiss in reality that they sometimes sound unconventional, stories about his teenage behavior remind audiences that their idol is human and as such has had its share of panic.

“If I look back, I haven’t always been very rigorous or very careful,” the 38-year-old told the Tribune de Geneve. “In the beginning, I would say that when I was between 16 and 22 years old, I sometimes did things other than tennis that could have caused irreversible damage.

So I know I’ve been lucky.” An example of these rebellious moments involved skiing and a big scare: “I went skiing like crazy with Marc Rosset after coming back from an Australian Open [2000]. I told him, ‘I’m taking this hit’ and I flew ten meters to find myself a hundred meters lower…Marc laughed and then he was very scared”.

This incident has taught Federer to be more cautious. He has become the lauded athlete that he is today because he has learned precious lessons from his experiences. “I fell off my bike several times,” added Roger Federer.

“Once in Ecublens, once in Basel, where I thought a truck was going to hit me. There have been times like this. So I know that things could have turned out in a completely different way”.

King Roger is a 20-time Grand Slam champion

In a recent interview, Patrick Mouratoglou stated that he considers Roger Federer a “genius”, and that the Swiss is the most unique player he has ever seen.

“Roger is a genius. He plays perfect tennis. I do not remember I ever saw a player playing tennis that way. And I think I will not do it until I die. Everything he does is perfect,” Mouratoglou was quoted as saying. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer had reached the finals of the grass-court major for a second consecutive year.

Federer was looking to create a record of gaining six Wimbledon titles in a row, a feat that he would have achieved for the first time. After battling on the tour for almost two decades, the H2H series of two players favor the Spaniard, with a ratio of 24:16.

Next time around, we will see Nadal and Federer on the same team in the Laver Cup. Fans will surely have to wait until the 2023 Australian Open to get another episode in the iconic Federer-Nadal rivalry.
