Ben Godfrey will be sidelined for around three months with the fractured fibula injury he sustained in Everton’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.
The 24-year-old suffered the blow just ten minutes into the season, with the contest eventually settled by Jorginho’s penalty.
Manager Frank Lampard gave a grim outlook at full time when he said the injury would keep him out for months rather than weeks, and the Toffees have confirmed those initial fears.
Everton’s statement reads: “Ben Godfrey underwent successful surgery this morning on the fractured fibula he sustained during Saturday’s Premier League opener against Chelsea at Goodison Park.
“The defender will now begin rehabilitation at Finch Farm under the care of the Club’s medical team and is expected to be out for around three months.”

Everton also provided an update on Yerry Mina, who also substituted to leave them short in central defence.
They add: “Mina sustained an ankle ligament injury in the second half of Saturday’s match and will see a specialist this week to discover the full extent of the problem before undergoing treatment at Finch Farm.”
