German tennis star Alexander Zverev admits he feared the absolute worst after sustaining a horrifying ankle injury at the French Open. During the second set of his French Open semifinal versus Rafael Nadal, Zverev badly rolled his ankle and immediately started crying in pain.
The Parisian crowd went silent as Nadal immediately went over the side of the net to check out on Zverev. It was evident that Zverev had sustained a serious ankle injury and the scans after the match revealed the German tore several ligaments.
“At first, of course, you think your career is over,” Zverev told Sky Deutschland. “You can no longer move your foot, you have heard the sound of breaking. A certain fear is already there at that moment. It was just a bitter moment for me.
The match against Rafa, I still think it could go either way. Then a final against Caspar Ruud: I think I [could have done] it. A Grand Slam win, number one in the world and so on and so forth”.
Zverev was hoping for his first Grand Slam final win
Zverev came to the French Open determined to win his first Grand Slam title.
At the start of the tournament, Zverev noted he’s 25 and that it’s either win or bust for him now. “You can’t choose these things,” he explained. “I mean, I got injured on the tennis court, I can live with that.
I got injured doing something I love to do. And I tried to play one of the biggest matches against one of the biggest players in the world,” Zverev said. Zverev is making a good progress from his ankle surgery as last week he revealed he is not using crutches anymore.
The US Open starts on August 29 and Zverev is hopeful that he will be able to compete at the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.
