Sara Sorribes Tormo routs Leolia Jeanjean to move into last-8

Sara Sorribes Tormo, who had a tough opener at the Palermo Ladies Open, breezed through her second-round match in the Italian city against France’s Leolia Jeanjean. The Spanish fourth seed took an hour and 24 minutes to wrap up a 6-0, 6-2 win against the qualifier.

Sorribes Tormo won 61% of her first-serve and 76% of her second-serve points. She also won 75% points on return on Jeanjean’s second serve. Palermo Ladies Open: Irina-Camelia Begu survives

Sixth seed Irina-Camelia Begu was the only player whose second-round match went the distance in Palermo on Wednesday.

The Romanian who took on France’s Oceane Dodin dropped the opening set 1-6 but came back in the match to win it 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 after two hours and four minutes of play. In the first set, Begu failed to save all three break points she faced while Dodin didn’t face any break points of her own.

The Frenchwoman won 13/13 points she played on her first serve while Begu won seven of the 14 points she played on her first serves. Across the latter two sets, while Dodin’s level dipped, Begu upped hers. The higher-ranked opponent lost her serve just once in the last two sets combined while breaking her opponent’s serve a total of four times.

Begu now awaits another French player in Diane Parry or the second-seeded Yulia Putintseva in the quarter-finals. Lastly, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini received a walkover from Shuai Zhang ahead of their round-of-16 match at the Palermo Ladies Open. Paolini now awaits either Julie Grabher or eighth-seeded Nuria Parrizas Diaz.
