Petra Martic was lost for words after clinching her second WTA title in Lausanne. In the Lausanne final, Martic saw off 21-year-old qualifier Olga Danilovic 6-4 6-2. Martic, who came to Lausanne ranked at No. 85 in the world, has won her first WTA title since 2019 and she is set to return to the top-50.

“It’s hard to describe how I feel now. It’s just nothing short of amazing,” Martic admitted, per the WTA website. Martic played great tennis throughout the entire tournament, having lost just one set in five matches played.

En route to winning Lausanne, Martic upset home favorite Belinda Bencic. “I think I played pretty consistent from the beginning until the end,” Martic said. “Yesterday and the matches before, I couldn’t do that and I had a few drops.

Today, I really tried to stay sharp and not let her get back in the match.”

Martic on what she told her agent about Danilovic

When Martic arrived to Lausanne, she spotted Danilovic was battling to earn a main draw spot through the qualifying event.

Martic then told her agent Danilovic would be a great player. “When I arrived here [in Lausanne] on the first day, it was the beginning of qualies; I came to check out the Center Court and the opening match was Olga,” Martic said.

“I was with my agent, and I told her, ‘I think this girl is going to be such a great player,’ and not only is she going to be, I think she already is. You already won a tournament like this, beaten me before, done so many nice things, and it’s only the beginning for you.”

After winning her maiden WTA title in 2019, Martic rose to a career-high ranking of No. 14 in 2020. Martic has been playing well since Wimbledon and it will be interesting to see if she can continue her good form in the rest of the summer.
