Alexander Bublik didn’t seem to be too impressed with the way Maxime Cressy won their Newport final meeting. After Cressy claimed a 2-6 6-3 7-6 (3) victory, Bublik didn’t hide that he felt the American was extremely lucky during the final.

During on-court trophy presentation, Bublik suggested to Cressy he would win big if he went to casino to play some roulette. Bublik had a 6-2 3-0 lead before Cressy stormed back to win in three sets. “You had great luck.

Put your whole prize money on red. You’re going to win big,” Bublik told Cressy during on-court trophy presentation, per Ben Rothenberg. “I apologize for being lucky,” Cressy responded.

Bublik blew his chances versus Cressy

Up 6-2 3-0, Bublik also had a break point in the fourth game of the second set.

Had Bublik converted, he would have gone up by a set and two breaks. Bublik didn’t convert and Cressy responded by claiming three breaks in the rest of the second set to force a decider. Just before the third set tie-break, Cressy took a fall and called a physio on the court.

The physio told Cressy he was all good to continue and the American thought the fall actually made him feel more relaxed the tie-break, in which he lost only three points to complete a big comeback win. “It was a very scary moment,” Cressy said of the fall.

“Although I was thinking more about losing the match than the knee itself. I was debating whether I should take a medical time-out but the physio didn’t seem to think it was serious and he advised me to keep going.

I listened to him and focused on the next point. I believe the fall made me more relaxed. It calmed down the nerves. Maybe it was destiny that I fell and then got off to a solid start in the tie-break.”
