Tottenham news: Djed Spence transfer delay explained as Antonio Conte opens up on pre-season

Tottenham Hotspur’s delayed signing of Middlesbrough full-back Djed Spence has been explained.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to north London all summer but it is so far yet to materialise. That may change in the coming days though, with Spurs reportedly making a breakthrough in negotiations last week, and Boro boss Chris Wilder has now explained the situation.

It comes as Antonio Conte has opened up on the side’s pre-season results so far following the 1-1 draw with Sevilla on Saturday. And Ivan Perisic has been made to wait even longer for his first Spurs appearance.

Spence transfer delay explained

Djed Spence’s summer transfer to Tottenham Hotspur dragged on as “nobody else came in for him”, according to Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder.

The 21-year-old is set to join Spurs this week for a fee believed to be around £12.5million, rising to £20m in potential add-ons, bringing to an end the north London club’s biggest transfer saga of the summer. And Wilder says the process was drawn out because, as no other clubs entered the bidding, it took plenty of negotiating before Middlesbrough were happy with the transfer fee.

The Boro boss said: “Forest didn’t come in for him, nobody else came in for him, Tottenham were the only show in town. So that made it quite difficult for Neil [Bausor] and Steve [Gibson] to get the right number, but they did and they’re comfortable with it. As far as I’m concerned, he’s gone, I don’t have to speak about it again and we move on.”

Conte opens up on pre-season

Antonio Conte has spoken about Tottenham’s pre-season so far following the 1-1 draw with Sevilla on Saturday.

Harry Kane opened the scoring in the 50th minute but Sevilla equalised shortly after with Ivan Rakitic finding the back of the net with a stunning drive from outside the box. It follows on from the 6-3 win over a K-League XI side on Wednesday.

And according to football.london, Conte has revealed he is “very happy” with how pre-season has gone so far as he was able to build up the fitness and tactical understanding of his team. He revealed the players had done double training sessions all week, adding his squad had “worked a lot and at this same time we enjoy to stay here”.

Sevilla talking points

Ivan Perisic has been made to wait even longer for his first Spurs appearance.

The Croatian is yet to play for his new club after arriving from Inter Milan on a free transfer earlier this summer after picking up a calf injury in his final game for the Italian side. According to football.london, he was named as a substitute against Sevilla but didn’t get on the pitch but could feature against Rangers in a week’s time.

There were also some familiar faces on show as Erik Lamela played against his former side in a feisty affair.
