Barbara Schett picks Serena Williams’ return as one of highlights from 2022 Wimbledon

Eurosport tennis expert Barbara Schett said seeing Serena Williams back in action was definitely one of the highlights from this year’s Wimbledon. Williams, 40, made a surprise announcement just two weeks ago before Wimbledon when she revealed her plans to return to competing after being out for 12 months.

Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, drew Harmony Tan in the first round and the two delivered a thriller. In more than three hours of play, Tan edged out Williams 5-7 6-1 7-6 (7).

Schett: It was wonderful to see Williams back

“It’s always very special to be here for two weeks in Wimbledon.

There’s so many highlights during the course of the two weeks, but if I would pick one, it was lovely to see Serena Williams back,” Schett told Eurosport. “She just announced it about a week and a half before before the tournament that she was going to play.

She hasn’t played for a whole year, she got injured here last year, nobody knew that she was actually practising and coming back. Even though she lost in the first round, it was just great to see her – who knows if she’s gonna be back here in Wimbledon? She says she wants to play the American swing; she is such a champion and an inspiration for the game.

It was wonderful to see her back and I think she’s done a great job considering she hasn’t played for a whole year”. After losing to Tan, Williams was asked about a potential return to Wimbledon in the future.

Williams couldn’t give a clear answer to that question, simply stating that she is taking it day-by-day and see where she ends up. However, Williams did confirm that she would like to compete at this year’s US Open, which starts in a month and a half.
