Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of midfielder Carline Weir on a free transfer from Manchester City.
The Scotland international’s City contract expired at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, bringing an end to her four-year stay in Manchester.
Real unveiled the signing of Weir on their official Twitter account, confirming she will wear the number 11 shirt.
The move marks the first time that the midfielder has played her domestic football outside of the UK, following spells at Hibernian, Arsenal, Bristol Academy, Liverpool and Manchester City.
During her time with the latter, Weir blossomed into one of the finest midfielders in the WSL and one of the most technically gifted players in Europe, renowned for her fabulous feet and spectacular solo goals.
The two-time Puskas Award nominee is the latest City first team regular to depart the club for a European rival, following Georgia Stanway’s move to Bayern Munich.
Real Madrid Femenino are a team still in their infancy, having only been officially branded as Real Madrid in 2020.
The club finished third in the Primera Division during the 2021/22 campaign, 30 points behind European heavyweights Barcelona.
Real also reached the quarter finals of the 2021/22 Champions League, knocking Weir’s former club City out in the qualifying rounds.
