Former British tennis star Johanna Konta says Emma Raducanu said nothing wrong following her second round exit from Wimbledon. After Raducanu suffered a 6-3 6-3 defeat to Caroline Garcia, the 19-year-old Briton gave a bit of a strong response when suggested she felt pressure at Wimbledon.
“There’s no pressure. Like, why is there any pressure?” Raducanu said. “I’m still 19. Like, it’s a joke. I literally won a Slam.” When asked about Raducanu’s comments, Konta described them as “facts.”
“She definitely presents modern maturity in her knowledge about herself and what she wants to do and the direction she wants to go,” Konta told the Express. “What she said is a fact, she is a Grand Slam champion and she’s 19 years old so they’re literally just facts that she said.
She has every right to say these facts. In terms of pressure, again pressure is very much absorbed and dealt with individually. I think it’s great if she’s able to digest the situation in this way and see it in a way that it’s just a part of the job and actually not a big deal.
Caroline Garcia played a great match, she just was the better player on that day”.
Konta: Raducanu will certainly get better
Raducanu hasn’t had an easy season as she has been struggling with her results and injuries.
However, Raducanu is playing just her first full season on the WTA Tour and Konta expects the 19-year-old to het better with time. “Obviously Emma is going to continue to be working to improve physically and improve her tennis.
So that’s going to take time and I think we all know that,” Konta said. Raducanu’s played a total of three matches this grass season. After sustained a side injury and retiring her Nottingham first round match, Raducanu was able to compete at Wimbledon, where she played just two matches. Raducanu is expected to return to action in a month at the Ciit Open in Washington.
