“Nobody cares about” Canelo vs. Golovkin III says Leonard Ellerbe

By Brian Webber: Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe came out on the attack on Thursday, reacting to Eddie Hearn saying that Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin III is a ten times bigger fight than the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford undisputed welterweight clash, which could take place later this year.

Hearn might be right about boxing fans wanting to see Canelo fight Golovkin again more than they do Spence battling Crawford. Obviously, Hearn is going overboard a little with the ten times bigger comment, but he could be correct with fans preferring to watch Canelo vs. Golovkin over Spence-Crawford.

Canelo is a bigger star than Spence & Crawford, and that’s a given. Those guys are popular, but neither is at the level Canelo is now.

They don’t have the huge built-in fanbase that Canelo possesses in the U.S, and bother are now in their 30s. Spence is 32 and Crawford 34, and older than the 31-year-old Canelo. For either of those welterweight stars to catch up to Canelo, they would need to change the way they’ve been matched.

Ellerbe, who isn’t on the best terms with Matchroom Boxing promoter Hearn, says “nobody cares” about the trilogy match between undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) and Golovkin at this point.

Fans do care about the Canelo-Golovkin III fight, but clearly, it’s a match-up that should have taken place in 2019, not in 2022.

You got to put the blame on the trilogy clash being delayed on the Mexican star Canelo because he was reluctant to get back in the ring with Golovkin all these years, and some fans feel that he was angry about the criticism the Kazah star gave him following his positive test for the banned PED clenbuterol.

“Lol, you know that, I was solely referring to trying to build up a fight nobody cares abt. It’s comical at this point. Nelo [Canelo Alvarez] just lost and did 120K buys [against Dmitry Bivol] combined on cable/satellite in the U.S. I repeat, 120k combined. This is just a promotion,” said Leonard Ellerbe on Twitter, reacting to Eddie Hearn saying Canelo vs. Golovkin III is ten times bigger than Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford.

In reacting to Ellerbe’s comments, fans on social media immediately went on the attack, saying that Canelo vs. Golovkin 3 is a bigger fight than ANYTHING Mayweather Promotions has put together for their flagship fighter Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis during his career.

Fans might be right because the biggest fight WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Tank Davis has had during his nine-year professional career with Mayweather Promotions is Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.

“He’s just trying to bring attention to a fight that nobody cares about. It’s an old-school tactic that’s played out and he hasn’t caught on that nobody in the U.S cares lol. It works in the UK but not in the US though,” said Ellerbe about Hearn’s comments about Canelo vs. Golovkin III trilogy being bigger than Spence-Crawford.
