Rafael Nadal is always there, he has already won two Slams in 2022

Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini is taking a humble approach ahead of Wimbledon as he insists Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are the two players that deserve to be called Wimbledon title favorites. Berrettini, 26, has become a strong force on grass and many have him among top contenders for this year’s Wimbledon title.

“I don’t know if I’m the favourite as Novak and Rafa (Nadal) are always there; Rafa has already won two Slams and no-one expected him to win in Australia,” Berrettini said, per Tennishead. “I don’t feel like I’m the favourite but I know I can do it, I can’t pull the wool over people’s eyes.

My aim is to have a big tournament at Wimbledon and I hope it will be two intense weeks. After a really good week in Stuttgart it would have been easy to not exactly take my foot off the gas but let my problems overwhelm me.

Instead I found the right energy levels and to win such a prestigious tournament is really very special”.

Berretini having a great grass season so far

After undergoing a right hand surgery in March, Berrettini made his return in the opening week of the grass season in Stuttgart.

In Stuttgart, Berrettini defeated Andy Murray in the final to win his first title of the year. The following week, Berrettini went all the way at the Queen’s Club to win his second title and improve his grass record to 9-0 in 2022.

Berrettini isn’t playing this week but he has already had a great preparation for Wimbledon. Last year, Berrettini reached his maiden Grand Slam final at Wimbledon before losing to Djokovic. Berrettini is set to arrive to The All England Club without a loss on grass and he will certainly feel well about his chances of making it all the way at Wimbledon this year.
