Camila Giorgi topples Garbiñe Muguruza in pre-quarters

Camila Giorgi got through to the quarter-finals of the Rothesay International in Eastbourne on Wednesday after upsetting fifth seed Garbiñe Muguruza in their third-round match. The Italian 12th seed won in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 53 minutes.

Giorgi won 75% of her first-serve points to Muguruza’s 61% and 50% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 42%. She broke Muguruza four times while saving six of the eight break points she faced. In the quarters, Giorgi will play Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova.

Tomova, who made it to the main draw as a lucky loser defeated Belgian qualifier, Kirsten Flipkens, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Rothesay International: Beatriz Haddad Maia’s grass dominance continues

Eighth seed Jelena Ostapenko who’s defending her title this week also made her way into the quarters after her opponent, the 11th-seeded Madison Keys retired in their match after the first set.

The Latvian had won the opening set 6-3 prior to Keys’ decision. Ostapenko will play Anhelina Kalinina for a chance to reach the semi-finals. The Ukrainian ousted 16th seed Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in their round-of-16 clash.

Petra Kvitova completed a comeback win in her third-round match against Katie Boulter. The Czech won 5-7, 6-0, 7-5 in two hours and 29 minutes. Next up for Kvitova is another Briton, Harriet Dart who won her second- and third-round matches on Wednesday.

First, Dart posted an upset over 10th seed Jil Teichmann, 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-3 in the second round after the match was postponed to the following day on Tuesday, after the opening two sets. Then, Dart took out Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the third round.

Beatriz Haddad Maia and Lesia Tsurenko will play the quarter-finals of the Rothesay International. The Brazilian 15th seed, who’s now unbeaten on grass since the Nottingham Open, won against Jodie Burrage, 6-1, 6-2. The Ukrainian, meanwhile, won against Magda Linette, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
