German tennis star Alexander Zverev thinks everything happens for a reason and that is why he wants to use his past mistakes as a learning experience and a chance to mature. Zverev is one of the most talented players on the ATP Tour but he is also not a stranger to contoversy.
In late 2021, the ATP launched an investigation into Olya Sharypova’s domestic violence allegations against the German tennis star. Zverev has claimed his innocence from Day 1 but the ATP is still investigating the matter.
Also, Zverev faced lots of criticism following his Acapulco outburst. In February, Zverev called the chair umpire “a f—— idiot” before slamming his racket several times on the umpire’s chair. “Everything that happens on the court, outside the court, it all happens for a reason.
I think we all grow with it, we all mature with it, we all learn from it. If you don’t learn from it, you’re an idiot. I would like to think I’m not there yet to call myself that,” Zverev said, per Tennis Majors.

Zverev makes a good start at the French Open
On Sunday, Zverev kicked off his French Open campaign with a 6-2 6-4 6-4 win over qualifier Sebastian Ofner.
Zverev has a history of struggling in his Grand Slam openers and he admitted he was happy after avoiding a drama in his first match at Roland Garros. “[I’m] very happy. Usually, I start a Grand Slam tournament with a five-set match and a few hours on court, but Sergi (Zverev’s coach Sergi Bruguera) told me today not to do that so I listened to him for once!
I’m happy with the match, especially against Sebastian who already played three matches here. He’s playing very well, so I’m happy with the start here,” Zverev said. Last year, Zverev reached the semifinal at the French Open. This year, Zverev is hoping to go a step further and clinch his first Grand Slam victory.
