The Canadiens entered Tuesday night with the highest odds at the No. 1 pick and the lottery balls fell their way as the club was rewarded with the top pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Montreal now owns the No. 1 pick and most likely will be taking Shane Wright. The OHL forward is regarded as the top prospect in this year’s draft class and has been the consensus No. 1 pick for a number of years.

The Devils moved up from being No. 5 in the pre-draft lottery to No. 2. The Coyotes will select No. 3, the Kraken No. 4 and the Flyers at No. 5.

In addition to Wright, teams will have their eyes on a number of top players with the order determined. Logan Cooley is considered the top American prospect while Simon Nemec and Juraj Slafkovsky are two of the premier players from Europe who are likely going to be off the board early.

How many draws were there in the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery?

The 2022 draft lottery had two draws:

  • Draw 1: To determine who will select first overall
  • Draw 2: To determine who will select second overall

Under the new lottery rules, only 11 teams had a shot at the No. 1 pick, because a club cannot climb more than 10 spots in the order. The same math applies with the No. 2 drawing, so only 12 teams had a chance at that selection.

After the two drawings, the rest of the order was determined by where each team finished in the standings.

When is the 2022 NHL Draft?

The 2022 NHL Draft is scheduled for July 7-8 with Round 1 on Friday, July 7, and Rounds 2-7 on Saturday, July 8. It will be held at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

As mentioned, Wright is the premier target for most teams. The Kingston Frontenacs forward was one of a handful of players to be granted exceptional player status and enter the OHL a year early.

Cooley has been a standout player for the U.S. national program and is committed to play at the University of Minnesota. Slafkovsky is a Slovakian forward best known for leading the 2022 Winter Olympics in scoring and helping Slovakia to a bronze medal at the Beijing Games.

Other players who could be top-five selections are Nemec, Matthew Savoie, Joakim Kemell and David Jiricek.

What team has selected first overall in the past?

The first draft was held in 1963. This will be the 60th draft in NHL history.
