Barry Cowan weighs in on Emma Raducanu pursuing ex-Maria Sharapova coach

Former British Davis Cup player Barry Cowan has nothing but good words to say about Riccardo Piatti as he has advised Emma Raducanu to go after the Italian coach if he is avaialable. This week, Raducanu announced a shock split from coach Torben Beltz.

Shortly after the split, The Times reported that Raducanu’s camp is hoping to land Piatti. After Wimbledon, Raducanu replaced Nigel Sears with Andrew Richardson. Richardson guided Raducanu to her maiden Grand Slam at the US Open but the Briton decided against continuing their partnership.

Raducanu wanted to hire an experienced coach and she brought in Beltz, who guided Angelique Kerber to Grand Slam victories and the world No. 1 ranking. Piatti is an ex-coach of Maria Sharapova and most recently he worked with Jannik SInner.

“He is a great guy,” Cowan told Sky Sports, as quoted on Eurosport. “He is someone who will invest massively into any player that he works with and he can see the long-term vision but also know that you’ve got to be winning matches now.

If he is on the market, my advice would be to tap into Riccardo Piatti.”

Cowan says Raducanu needs stability

During his conversation for Sky Sports, Cowan underlined that Raducanu can’t continue replacing coaches just like that.

Cowan stressed that Raducanu needs to find someone long-term. This week, Raducanu suggested that she is in no hurry to find a new coach. “I always love learning and I love to hear new ideas,” Raducanu said. “Whether I use all of them or not, that’s my own decision or my own call, but I just love to get a taste for all the different ideas that are out there, and different models.

Something that I am pretty good at is understanding the game, studying it. That is one of my strengths. “Of course a coach’s experience is very valuable at certain times, but the majority of the time I feel that I already know the answer to the question I am asking”.
