ave you ever wondered who would win in a drive-off between Harry Kane and Michael Phelps? Whether Oscar De La Hoya or Pep Guardiola would be better at plotting their way around 9 holes? Well, if the answer to either of the above is a “yes”, you may be in luck as the Icons Series golf tournament is to hold its inaugural event in the US this summer, and the lineup of competitors already looks like it’s set to be a cracker.
Set at one of the more iconic venues in US golf during the summer months, you know there will be the potential for some spectacular shot-making if the teams can keep it on the short stuff.
Who’s playing at the Icons Series golf event?
The entrants confirmed for Team USA thus far include 23-time Olympic gold medal winner Michael Phelps, former NFL player turned media personality Michael Strahan, another former NFL player in long-time Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and one of the best pound for pound boxers of all time in Oscar De La Hoya.

/ Getty ImagesFor the Rest of the World team, Ash Barty is one of the leading names having recently retired from pro tennis with there being much speculation that she could make it as a pro golfer if she so wished. Elsewhere, England and Tottenham star Harry Kane is supposed to be pretty handy with a club in hand, playing off a handicap of 2. Pep Guardiola is also expected to turn his tactical mind from the football pitch to the golf course, with boxer Canelo Alvarez hoping to get the better of this fight against the elements.
When does the Icons Series golf event start?
It will take place at the Liberty National golf club from Thursday June 30 to Friday July 1. Liberty National hosted the Presidents Cup in 2017, in which then-president Donald Trump became the first sitting president to present the trophy – with Steve Stricker’s Team USA taking it home with a 19-11 win over the team of internationals.
Who are the team captains?
For the 2022 Icons Series, the teams will be captained by Ernie Els for the Rest of the World side, and Fred Couples will take over the American team. Couples has three Presidents Cup captaincies to his name, and ominously for the ROTW team, came out victorious every time. Els has had a spin in the big chair of that tournament only once, but has made an incredible eight appearances as a player in the Cup, to mixed fortunes.
