Reigning king of Scrabble Champion, Tunde Oduwole, yesterday, won the second edition of the late Janet Adowei Memorial Invitational Scrabble Championship held at the Blu Atlantic Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.
The championship, which featured top players from across the country, was filled with fanfare and high level of competition in the board game.
After 12 rounds of matches, Oduwole beat 30 other participants with 11 points and +1065 spread. Hakeem Olaribigbe scored 9+539 to place second, while Nsikak Etim scored 8+649 to take the third position.
Attractive cash prizes were awarded to the top 10 players, while others got consolation prizes. Bukunmi Afolayan was crowned the best women player of the tourney.
Speaking after the competition, Oduwole commended the organisers for giving more scrabble players the platform to sharpen their skills.
Also speaking at the event, organiser of the event, Ebikeme Adowei, who is also president of Lekki Scrabble Club, said the club instituted the championship in December 2020 in honour of his late mother, who died in November last year.
“The 2021 Late Janet Adowie Scrabble Championship was a success. It featured over 30 top scrabble players, including former national and African champions, Oduwole, Etim, Dipo Akanbi and Saheed Jimoh.
“The game of scrabble needs to be developed and players given more platforms to hone their skills for future international and domestic championships,” he said.
