World Relays: Azamati opted out to prepare for World Championships – Bawa Fuseini

0

Ghana’s national 100m record holder Benjamin Azamati will abstain from competing at the World Relays in Guangzhou, China in order to preserve prepare for the World Championships in September.

Azamati was part of Ghana’s relay team at the Paris Olympic Games last year, as they secured an automatic slot for the World Relays.

However, the sprinter who broke Ghana’s 22-year national 100m record in Match 2021 by clocking 9.97 will not run for the country until September, when the World Championships come around.

President of Ghana Athletics, Bawa Fuseini who confirmed this to JoySports, said ‘‘we have assembled our best athletes – for the World Relays, excluding Benjamin Azamati who has asked permission that he has got other things to do in preparing for the World Championships and we have given him that leave.’’

In his absence, Barnabas Aggerh, who featured for Ghana at last year’s African Games, will join Ibrahim Fuseini, Joseph Paul Amoah, Sean Sarfo Antwi and Mustapha Bokpin.

Bawa Fuseini also expressed optimism that the team has enough quality to excel at the games.

‘‘But we still have a very quality team; Fuseini, Joe Paul Amoah, Barnabas Aggerh, Sean Sarfo Antwi and they are a formidable team. We pray and we know that they will qualify for the World Chanmpiobships come September this year.’’

The World Athletics Relays will be held in Guangzhou, China from May 10 to May 10, 2025.

Nobody was paid to participate in CJ suspension demo

0

Bright Ofori Ampofo, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfro Constituency, has dismissed claims that participants in Monday’s demonstration against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo were paid by the party.

His response follows public concerns over the large turnout at the protest, which some critics speculated was incentivized.

Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Monday, May 5, Ampofo stressed that the protest was a spontaneous grassroots response to what many believed was an act of injustice.

“When injustice is going on, everybody should be worried… The mobilisation—we just had to go to our grassroots, tell them what is going on, and the fact that we cannot keep silent about it and we need to speak up brought out the numbers,” he explained.

He challenged the notion that such a crowd could have been assembled through financial inducement.

“You saw the numbers on the street. Which millionaire can pay all those people on the street? That is not it. It is not just paying somebody to come for a demonstration; it is about the conviction and the reality that is staring us in the face that there is something we needed to do,” he stated.

Reflecting on the 2024 election outcome, Ampofo acknowledged the NPP’s defeat but maintained that the party remains Ghana’s largest political force.

He attributed the loss to voter apathy among NPP supporters, many of whom, he said, now regret their decision to abstain from voting.

“They think that the bad state of NPP is still better than the best state of NDC,” he added.

71 galamseyers arrested, over 150 excavators, vehicles, firearms seized

0

Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has revealed that 71 illegal miners have been arrested and over 150 excavators, vehicles, and firearms seized in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking at an event marking World Press Freedom Day—organised by the German Embassy and the UK High Commission in Accra on Monday, May 5—Kwakye Ofosu addressed diplomats, journalists, and stakeholders on the government’s efforts to curb illegal mining activities.

He emphasised the administration’s commitment to ending the menace, describing it as unwavering.

“As of the last brief that we got, 71 illegal miners have been arrested. Over 150 excavators, bulldozers, vehicles, and other weapons have been seized so far. Work is ongoing to ensure that the L.I 2462 no longer exists,” he assured.

Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that on March 20, the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala, laid Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 in Parliament, which is now expected to be revoked in full when the House reconvenes.

He added that government has abandoned plans to merely amend the regulation, which permits mining in forest reserves, and will instead pursue a complete repeal.

He further assured that existing mining laws will be reviewed and strengthened as part of a comprehensive approach to eliminate galamsey.

World Bank warns Ghana risks reversing poverty gains amid economic strain

0

The report outlines growing challenges including soaring inflation, a weakening cedi, and escalating climate-related risks, all of which are driving a sharp rise in household vulnerability.

The report reveals that more than 25% of the population now live in extreme poverty, defined as surviving on less than $2.15 a day—approximately GH¢30.28.

This alarming figure reflects a deepening cost-of-living crisis, where rising prices for food, fuel, and essential services are significantly reducing the purchasing power of ordinary Ghanaians.

The World Bank highlights that the economic downturn is disproportionately affecting low-income households and rural communities. “Poverty in Ghana fell considerably up until the COVID-19 pandemic,” the report states. “However, moderate growth due to substantial fiscal adjustments, global economic and trade uncertainties, and persistent inflation is likely to impact households and may increase poverty in the coming years. If the impacts on the poorest are not properly mitigated, the necessary economic stabilisation reforms could undermine further progress in poverty reduction.”

The Bank warns that over one million additional Ghanaians could fall into poverty unless urgent environmental and economic reforms are introduced. It calls for immediate investment in human capital, expanded social protection programmes, and enhanced climate resilience strategies to shield vulnerable populations.

To counter these threats, the report recommends structural reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, strengthening governance, and stimulating job creation. While acknowledging the severity of current challenges, it also emphasises Ghana’s strong potential for recovery through inclusive and sustainable policy actions.

The World Bank notes that it is continuing to collaborate closely with the Ghanaian government and development partners to tackle these overlapping crises and support the country’s efforts to achieve long-term stability and equitable growth.

The Medical Director at Agarwal Eye Hospital in Accra, Dr Asiwome Kwesi, has disclosed that Suzzy Pinaman, a second-year student of Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, Ashanti Region, who was allegedly shot in the eye by a classmate, is likely to require multiple surgeries.

Addressing the press on Monday, May 5, 2025, he stated that the teenager’s condition remains critical following the gunshot injury.

“It’s likely to involve multiple surgeries. The outcome is still very guarded. What that means is the result is uncertain because we are not able to see the back of the eye. And if we cannot see the back of the eye, we can only assume what might be there,” he remarked.

The teenager, who was critically injured on April 4, 2025, during a school break, is seen in a viral video being assisted into a hospital.

Suzzy was hit in the forehead when her classmate, Bernard Amoabeng, allegedly fired a gun during an argument over its functionality.

The bullet fragments lodged in her eye have left her unable to see, sleep, or properly close her eye.

She has since been unable to return to school, and her family has been struggling to finance her treatment.

In a heartbreaking video, Suzzy made a public appeal to businessman Ibrahim Mahama and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, saying, “Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and Ibrahim Mahama, I am pleading with you to hear my cry and come to my aid. I have no one.”

Following the appeal, Ibrahim Mahama, through his aide Rafik Mahama, pledged to cover all medical expenses, both locally and abroad if necessary.

Govt inaugurates Steering Committee to boost private participation in power distribution

0

The government has inaugurated an eight-member Private Sector Participation (PSP) Steering Committee to provide strategic oversight for the implementation of the reintroduced Multiple Lease Model (MLM) aimed at transforming electricity distribution in Ghana.

The MLM approach, which segments electricity distribution services into regional units to be managed by various private operators, is designed to attract credible investors, enhance efficiency, reduce technical and commercial losses, and improve customer satisfaction nationwide.

The PSP Steering Committee will be chaired by John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, with Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance, serving as co-chair. Other members include Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister of Trade and Agribusiness, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, Attorney General and Minister for Justice and Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications.

The rest are Mr. Julius Kpekpena, Ag. Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG); Mr. John Okine Yamoah, Ag.Managing Director of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo); and Madam Baba Akon, who will serve as Secretary to the Committee.

In a statement read on his behalf by the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, on Monday, 5, Richard Gyan Mensah, at the inauguration in Accra, Jinapor said the MLM was a cornerstone of the government’s broader energy sector recovery and modernisation strategy.

He explained that the Steering Committee would provide strategic direction for the PSP rollout, gather baseline data, including auditing the PSP deal, coordinate with ECG, NEDCo, regulatory bodies, and transaction advisors, as well as monitor progress across critical milestones.

“The Committee will also be responsible for reviewing and advising on transaction documents, procurement frameworks, draft agreements, risk mitigation strategies, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder communications,” Jinapor said.

He added that the PSP Implementation Unit within the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition would serve as the Secretariat to the Committee, offering administrative and technical support throughout the implementation process.

Jinapor charged the Committee to ensure that the procurement of technical, financial, and legal transaction advisors is completed by May 31, 2025, to facilitate the commencement of detailed implementation.

“By September 2025, we anticipate issuing the first phase of the competitive bidding documents for private concessionaires,” he stated.

Three sub-committees- Technical, Governance & Regulatory, and Stakeholder Management have also been established to support the process.

Mr. Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, Chair of the Technical Sub-Committee, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and called on Ghanaians to support the Committee as it undertakes its critical mandate.

“The road will be challenging and difficult, but I have confidence in the members that we will be able to live up to expectations by providing guidance to the restructuring of the power distribution sector to ensure customer service satisfaction,” he said.

Ghana vs Senegal (U-20 AFCON)

0

Ghana’s Black Satellites take on defending champions Senegal this evening in a high-stakes Group B clash at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The match, which kicks off at 6:00 PM GMT at the New Suez Stadium, is a must-watch as both teams search for their first win of the tournament following opening-day stalemates.

Ghana drew 1-1 with DR Congo, while Senegal was held by the Central African Republic.

Desmond Ofei’s men aim to bounce back strongly and are expected to maintain much of the squad that faced DR Congo. Jerry Afriyie could be handed a start after his lively cameo off the bench, while Abdul Sulemana, who was named Man of the Match in the opener, will marshal the midfield.

Musibau Aziz, Ghana’s goal scorer last time out, could lead the attack once again, with Gidios Aseako in goal and a familiar back four of Adjabeng, McCarthy Ofori, Aaron Essel, and Dacosta Antwi providing defensive cover.

Senegal, on the other hand, is expected to stick with the same lineup, including goalkeeper Mouhamed Sissokho, midfielder Cheikh Thiam, who scored against Central African Republic, and striker Ibrahim Dieng.

This is only the second-ever U-20 AFCON meeting between these two West African giants. Senegal won the first in 2019, but Ghana will take confidence from their 1-0 win over the Young Lions of Teranga in the 2023 African Games semi-final—a tournament Ghana went on to win.

A win for either side today would significantly boost their chances of progressing to the knockout rounds and could play a crucial role in determining the group’s pecking order.

Ashanti Regional NADMO intensifies flood prevention efforts ahead of rainy season

0

File photo of a flooded area File photo of a flooded area

The Ashanti Regional National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is ramping up its efforts to prevent flooding ahead of the rainy season.

In 2024, flooding incidents in the Ashanti Region resulted in several lives being lost.

NADMO is now shifting its focus from disaster response to prevention.

According to a TV3 report, the organisation has identified multiple flood-prone communities, including Owabe, Aboabo Pelele, Akwatia Line, Sewaba, Aloga Junction, Breman UGC, and Kronom Abuohia.

Regional NADMO Director, Mohammed Nassir Ibrahim, outlined their strategy, stating that; “We are going to be able to desilt and drain the streams and gutters that are already choked, not just desilt, take the filth away so that it doesn’t go back in there.”

Ibrahim emphasised the importance of collaboration, stating; “Also, we are involving our assemblymen, sub-metros, traditional leaders, and all those who matter. So that in preparedness, we have contact with each other, and they can alert us on what needs to be done when we don’t have the power to collaborate. When we are empowered, we will deal with it.

“So, this year, we are hoping and praying that we get the necessary support to clear the streams and gutters, and to even prevent the flooding.”

He expressed hope for the necessary support to clear the streams and gutters and prevent flooding.

With the rainy season approaching, NADMO officials are working diligently to minimise the potential impacts of flooding.

To enhance their flood mitigation efforts, NADMO staff in the region are undergoing intensive training in disaster prevention techniques.

“Yes, we are NADMO, we have a duty imposed on us by law and by the state. But when the disaster strikes, it doesn’t select residents or travelers; it affects all of us,” the regional director remarked.

Through public education campaigns, desilting of drains, and community sensitisation programs, NADMO is proactively working to reduce flooding risks.

As the rains draw near, residents in high-risk areas are also taking precautions.

0

President John Dramani Mahama will deliver a special national broadcast on Wednesday, May 7, to provide an update on the progress of his administration’s 120-day contract with the people of Ghana.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who encouraged citizens across the country to tune in to the address.

“On Wednesday, the President will hold a broadcast in which he will render account for his stewardship in the last four months or 120 days. Therefore, I will urge Ghanaians to tune in and listen to the President so that they can draw their conclusion as to the level of compliance with the very promises that the President made to the people of Ghana,” he said.

National Theatre, Twellium mark World Dance Day with Accra Psychiatric patients

0

In a heartwarming celebration of the 2025 World Dance Day, the National Theater and Twellium Industrial Company partnered to bring dance therapy to patients at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

The event showcased the healing power of dance, promoting mental well-being and social cohesion among the patients.

The National Dance Company, a subsidiary of the National Theatre, treated the patients to captivating performances of traditional Ghanaian dances, including Adowa, Agbadza, Kete, and Borborbor.

These vibrant performances not only entertained but also uplifted the patients, highlighting the therapeutic benefits of dance.

According to Mr. Henry Malm, Executive Director of the National Theatre, the gesture was motivated by a desire to bring joy and healing to the patients. He emphasized the significance of dance beyond entertainment, stating that it is a powerful therapeutic tool that underscores our shared humanity.

Through this initiative, Twellium and the National Theater demonstrated their commitment to promoting mental health and well-being in the community.

“We believe this international celebration should be inclusive. Our goal is not just to entertain, but to contribute to the healing process. Using dance as therapy is a commendable initiative,” he stated.

Dr Kwadwo Marfo Obeng, Director, Accra Psychiatric Hospital, lauded the initiative, noting that exposing individuals with depression to music and dance could yield remarkable improvements in their emotional and physical wellbeing.

“Music and dance are inherently social activities. Engaging in them fosters connection and helps patients feel a sense of belonging, which is vital for mental health recovery,” he said.

Dr. Obeng further emphasized that dance plays a significant role in improving the physical health of patients, particularly those who have experienced weight gain as a result of treatment.

“We need accessible and enjoyable forms of exercise for patients. Some individuals who were initially stiff during the session eventually loosened up. We hope such programmes become a regular feature.

International Dance Day is a global celebration of dances promoted by the International Dance Council (CID) and the International Theatre Institute.

The event takes place every year on April 29, which is the anniversary of the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), who is considered to be the “father” or creator of modern ballet (i.e. classical or romantic ballet as we know it today not “Modern Ballet” as this is sometimes confused with contemporary ballet.)

The day strives to encourage participation and education in dance through events and festivals held on the date all over the world.

The core objective of International Dance Day is to raise public awareness of dance as an art form, a means of cultural expression, and an educational tool.

It particularly encourages governments and educational institutions worldwide to integrate dance into the education system, ensuring its accessibility from primary to higher education.

Assets declaration: Mahama should’ve referred defaulters to CHRAJ

0

Anti-corruption campaigner, Vitus Azeem says while President John Dramani Mahama’s sanctions on appointees who failed to declare their assets are punitive, the proper legal channel should have been through the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

In interview  on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday May 3,  Azeem questioned the legal basis for the action, despite acknowledging its deterrent effect.

“It is punitive enough,” he said, but questioned its effectiveness. “I think that maybe the best approach for him would have been for him to refer to the CHRAJ, that the Constitution provides in Article 287 for any privileges and actions to be taken against people who have failed to comply with their assets declaration.”

Azeem’s comments highlight the need to align anti-corruption measures with existing constitutional procedures, particularly when sanctions are involved.

Under Article 287 of Ghana’s Constitution, complaints related to breaches of the code of conduct for public officers, including failure to declare assets, must be investigated by CHRAJ, which also has the power to recommend sanctions.

President Mahama has given all appointees until May 7, 2025, to complete their asset declarations or face automatic dismissal.

President’s move is commendable – Prof Agyeman-Duah

0

Former United Nations Senior Governance Advisor, Prof Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama’s recent move to sanction appointees who failed to comply with asset declaration regulations, describing it as a “good beginning” and a step in the right direction.

This follows the President’s directive against government appointees who missed the March 31 deadline for declaring their assets.

The President has ordered that the affected appointees forfeit three months of their salary and donate the amount to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. He has also threatened to dismiss any appointee who fails to comply by May 6, 2025.

Speaking in an interview on on Monday, May 5, Prof Agyeman-Duah said he was “quite pleased” with the initiative, even though it did not entirely meet initial expectations.

“I’m happy that he’s taken this step. It might not be what we expected, especially since in his first announcement, he seemed to have said if you don’t do it by March, you’d be gone,” he remarked.

The professor further noted that the decision to withhold the salaries of non-compliant appointees is a firm and commendable approach.

“Punishing them with foregoing their salaries for two or three months—I think it’s a good beginning. So, I’m happy that the President has taken this tough stance,” he stated.

Ketu South MCE to adopt new appraisal approach to implement govt agenda

0

The Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), in the Volta Region, Nicholas Kwabla Worklachie has hinted of adopting a 360-degree appraisal approach aimed at fast tracking the successful implementation of governments resetting agenda for total development of the area.
He indicated that modern trends in local governance administration demands more commitment and dedication from all actors towards ensuring that set goals and targets are met within stipulated periods.
The MCE disclosed these at a meeting with members of the assembly on his programme for the municipality and what is expected of them during his tenure as the MCE especially the prompt submission of quarterly reports.
The 360-degree feedback or multi-rater feedback he explained is a comprehensive employee evaluation method that gathers feedback from multiple sources, including the employee themselves, their manager, peers, direct reports, and even external stakeholders especially customers.
He said instead of relying solely on the manager’s perspective, a 360-degree perspective gathers feedback from various people who interact with the employee regularly as such allows for a more complete understanding of an individual’s strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement, fostering personalized development plans.

Mr Worklachie noted that by identifying specific areas for improvement and leveraging on the feedback from various perspectives, the appraisals could contribute to better team performance and increased employee engagement in order to ensure that he does not deviate from his targets.

The MCE stated that performance standards would be set for every committee, businesses, branch executives and party members to be spearheaded by a research unit to monitor and report on their performance to enable them to translate theory into practice which could then be used as a basis for self-reflection, development planning, and coaching.

He has therefore directed members of the sub committees to submit their curriculum vitae with one page paper on their expertise to appropriately place them in the right committee.

Mr Worklachie indicated that a satellite campus of the Local Government Institute would be established at Denu, to build capacity of assembly members on strategic management structures, explaining that if effectively done would be replicated in other district and municipalities in the region.

He said Business Development Sub committees and the Ketu South Coastal Sub Committee on Disaster Management Fund would also be established to lobby the corporate individually or collectively to raise funds to dredge water bodies to open up fish farming opportunities in the area.

The MCE stated that expectations are high and they as an assembly cannot afford to disappoint the people assuring the members of carrier progression opportunities and the institution of a welfare scheme to support members.

NDC beach executives in AAK gives MP seven says to undo disputed appointments

0

By Isaac Arkoh

Abura Dunkwa (C/R), May 05, GNA – Concerned branch executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese Constituency, have called on Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Member of Parliament (MP), to reverse some recent appointments to national security, the District Assembly and some key institutions.

The group said, the appointments disregarded the constituency’s interests, warning that failure to do so may jeopardise his chances of parliamentary re-election.

They asked for the immediate reversal within seven days, cautioning that failure to comply would be considered evidence of biases toward certain individuals and fomenting party divisions.

At a press conference on Monday at Abura Dunkwa, Mr David Dogbatse, a member of the Constituency Elections Directorate, and Mr Emmanuel Godline Forsta, an NDC Branch Chairman stated, “We entrusted our MP with the power to improve our lives, not to divide, suppress, or obstruct appointments.

“It would have been preferable to see multiple appointments made during the industrious leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s second government, but that had not materialised because of our MP”.

The group further alleged that Mr Kwakye Ofosu had absolutely disregarded his Constituency and was not aligning with the expectations of his role.

They said during the District Assembly elections, Mr Vincent Koomson, the Constituency Chairman requested for four names from the MP and the party presented six.

However, on the day of the District Chief Executive confirmation, Mr Kwakye Ofosu allegedly instructed Mr Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, the Central Regional Minister to revoke four appointments, claiming he could not work with those individuals.

The group also said that out of the 10 slots allocated to the constituency for “National Security,” six were the MP’s slot and four for the party via the constituency Chairman.

However, during the regularisation process, three of the Constituency Chairman’s nominees were reportedly replaced by Mr Ofosu, obviously to suppress certain individuals as future competitors.

They further accused the MP of disrespecting party leadership, particularly the constituency Chairman, who was instrumental in securing his seat.

They claimed that the MP had instead, aligned with a former Constituency Chairman, whose leadership was deemed poor during the previous NDC’s eight years in government.

The Branch executives cautioned the NDC leadership at all levels, about Mr Ofosu’s use of power to suppress constituency members perceived as supporters of the current Chairman.

They alleged that despite appeals to him during the 2024 campaign period, the MP withheld campaign materials from the Chairman and cautions to him to stop his aggressive tactics persisted.

Despite winning the election by a significant margin, the group was not happy because the MP appeared determined to deny the Chairman and his followers any benefits from government appointments, undermining party unity and constituency development.

The group criticised these moves as deliberate attempts to prevent some people from the constituency from securing positions, saying his attitude demonstrated failure to empower his constituents.

The group urged the party leadership to address the root causes of divisiveness, noting that similar issues contributed to the party’s losses in 2016 and 2020.

Education Ministry to establish technical, vocational education fund

0

The Ministry of Education has announced plans to establish a Technical and Vocational Education Fund aimed at boosting support for the sector.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the governing council of the C.K. Tendem and Tamale Technical universities on Monday, May 5.

Addressing the media after the inauguration, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu stated that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among students.

He further revealed that the Ministry is proposing the allocation of 2% of Ghana’s oil revenue to transform the technical and vocational education landscape across the country.

“Indeed, I am working very assiduously to get Ghana and the government of President Mahama to establish a technical vocational education fund for the country.

“Indeed, as the president was launching the national apprenticeship programme, I accompanied him and as I sat through and looked through the promise of livelihoods we are likely to change and improve, I was even more convinced that this is the hour for me to pursue the technical vocational education fund,” he said.

Assets declaration: Publish names of defaulting appointees

0

Anti-corruption advocate Vitus Azeem has welcomed President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to sanction appointees who failed to declare their assets by the March 31 deadline, but called for more transparency in the process.

Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, May 5, Azeem praised the move as long overdue, noting that Ghana’s Asset Declaration Act, which has existed since 1998, has not been effectively enforced.

“I think it is a very important decision that the president has taken because this law, the Assets Declaration Act, has been in existence since 1998, and we don’t seem to be doing anything about it,” Azeem said.

He criticised past inaction by the Auditor-General, who he said has failed to publish the names of individuals who have or have not complied with the law.

“Even the Auditor-General doesn’t publish names of people who have either declared or not declared, and for those who have not declared, no action has been taken against them.”

While supporting Mahama’s sanctions—requiring defaulters to forfeit three months’ salary and donate it to the MahamaCares Fund — Azeem urged the President to go further by publicly naming those in breach of the law.

“The names of the people must be published. The sanctions imposed on them must be published so that we know that he is actually determined to ensure that people will abide by the laws of the country,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Mahama has issued a firm warning that appointees who fail to declare their assets by May 7 will be automatically dismissed.

Ungoverned Spaces Threaten Ghana’s Security –   Antwi-Danso

0

By Christopher Arko

Accra, May 5, GNA – Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso, Dean, Academic Affairs, Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, has warned that ungoverned border areas pose serious security risks and could enable extremist attacks.

He cited “Dollar Power,” an area in the Bole District as an example, where, according to him, over 90 percent of the people engaged in illegal mining are non-Ghanaians.

“If the terrorists are able to team up with them and they get a place to settle… they could use these places to attack the country, these are the things we must be looking at,” he said.

Dr. Antwi-Danso raised the concern in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) about emerging threats from extremist groups in neighbouring countries.

He expressed concern that such groups could exploit insecurity along Ghana’s borders to target the gold industry as a funding source.

Dr. Antwi-Danso, an International Relations Expert, also feared that extremist activities in the Sahel, especially Burkina Faso, could spill over into Bawku and worsen the chieftaincy conflict between the Kusasis and Mamprusis.

He said former combatants and jihadists could join displaced persons from Burkina Faso to cross Ghana’s porous borders and engage in extremist activities.

Dr. Antwi-Danso warned that poverty in the Bawku area, coupled with deteriorating economic conditions and the proliferation of arms, made the region vulnerable to criminal and jihadist influence.

He urged the government to prevent former combatants from entering conflict zones, saying their presence could destabilize the country.

“Terrorism thrives only where there is a fertile ground for such activity… they will never go to an area like Accra, Kumasi where the people are not involved in such behaviour,” he said.

Dr. Antwi-Danso also commended former President Mahama for engaging with Sahelian countries that have withdrawn from ECOWAS, encouraging them to return.

He noted that the withdrawal of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES) – comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger – had affected ECOWAS economically and structurally.

“Their exit is a blow to ECOWAS, both economically and structurally… the three countries have a lot in common and countries in the south trades with them,” he added.

Dr. Antwi-Danso explained that the Sahelian states were driven to form the AES because of shared language, currency, and a common security threat – terrorism.

According to him, the three countries once looked to ECOWAS for support to combat jihadists but were left unsupported.

“So they are more motivated to come together to fight these… than look up to ECOWAS for help because they could not provide the support to combat the jihadists who were taking over their lands,” he said.

Dr. Antwi-Danso warned that other countries could follow suit in exiting ECOWAS unless reforms are made.

He called on ECOWAS to close the gap between policy and implementation and strengthen integration to promote development.

Assets declaration defaulters should’ve been sacked

0

Governance expert Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah has expressed disappointment with President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to sanction government appointees who failed to declare their assets with a three-month salary forfeiture rather than immediate dismissal.

The criticism follows President Mahama’s announcement during the launch of a Code of Conduct for government appointees in Accra on Monday, May 5.

He warned that appointees who do not comply with the final deadline of May 7, 2025, will be dismissed.

This directive comes after an earlier March 31 deadline was missed, forming part of the administration’s push to promote transparency and accountability in public service.

However, in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Prof. Agyeman-Duah argued that those who ignored the President’s order should have been removed from office entirely.

“I take presidential directives seriously, so if you blatantly defy the President’s order, it’s an insult to the President. That’s the way I see it; in that respect, I would’ve fired you right away. That didn’t happen, and he has decided otherwise,” he said.

He acknowledged that the President has the prerogative to act at his discretion but maintained that a firmer approach would have been more appropriate.

“So, I won’t begrudge the President of using discretionary powers to decide what to do. Certainly, it wasn’t a good show by those who defied his powers. I think dismissals would have been a more dignified way to treat them and also to show them the seriousness of this particular action,” he added.

According to the Catholic Archbishop, public patience is wearing thin when it comes to the galamsey menace.

The Catholic Archbishop further quizzed the President on his May Day address.

New book ‘The Landmines of Destiny’ launched to reinforce values through literature

0

The power of literature to shape minds and influence society is undeniable. In Ghana’s educational system, it continues to play a critical role in developing well-rounded, value-driven individuals.

A new book titled *The Landmines of Destiny*, authored by Dr. Boadi Nyamekye, seeks to contribute meaningfully to this mission.

The book explores themes such as discipline, purpose, and personal responsibility, with the aim of instilling strong moral foundations in readers—particularly the youth.

At the official launch of the book in Accra, Lady Yaa Boadi Nyamekye emphasized the importance of gratitude and introspection.

She encouraged Ghanaians to embrace gratitude in their daily lives, adding that purposeful literature, when rooted in values, has the power to inspire both personal transformation and social change.

“On your journey to fulfilling your destiny to completing the assignments God has called you to there are many factors at play. Some things will help you along the way, while others will discourage you from moving forward. These are some of the issues the book addresses.

Some, you may not have considered. For instance, there’s a section on gratitude. If you don’t appreciate how far you’ve come, you won’t be able to fully embrace what lies ahead. When you look back at the challenges you’ve overcome, you can be confident that if you’ve come this far, then greater things await.”

Some attendees expressed hope that The Landmines of Destiny would serve as a tool for reshaping character especially among young readers and spark national conversations on values and ethics.

“As Christians, we know that God has good plans for each of us plans not of evil, but of hope and a future. However, the enemy also has counter plans. Landmines of Destiny, written by our father Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye, helps us identify those hidden dangers. It teaches us where not to step, what to avoid, and how to walk in alignment with God’s path.”

As Ghana continues to reform its educational priorities, many experts agree that the strategic use of literature, support for indigenous languages, and the promotion of a national reading culture are essential to building a more enlightened and resilient society.

How financial institutions can drive sustainable food systems in Ghana

0

Sustainable agriculture is fundamentally about ensuring that future generations can meet their needs while addressing the pressing food and nutritional demands of today. In Ghana, where the population is projected to rise from 33 million to over 50 million in the next two decades, the need for action is urgent. Stakeholders must move beyond rhetoric and take bold, decisive steps to secure the nation’s food future, without sacrificing the health of our soils, water resources, and biodiversity.

At its heart, sustainability means using resources – whether fertile fields or flowing rivers – in ways that leave them better than we found them, or at the very least, intact. In agriculture, this translates into practices that restore soil health, conserve water, and minimize environmental harm. Sustainable agriculture is, therefore, not merely an environmental aspiration; it is an economic and social imperative, deeply entwined with the future prosperity and resilience of our nation.

Why Financial Institutions Must Champion Sustainable Food Systems

The role of financial institutions in Ghana’s agricultural transformation cannot be overstated. Banks and financial services occupy a crucial spot in enabling businesses to grow, innovate, and survive. In the context of agriculture, particularly food production, this role is even more significant because food is a primary human need. If Ghana cannot meet its growing food and nutrition demands sustainably, we face not just economic setbacks but threats to national security and public health.

Thus, financial institutions have a duty beyond profit-making. And at Stanbic Bank, we believe in touching lives and leaving society better than we found it. Investing in sustainable agriculture is not only commercially viable but a meaningful contribution to ensuring food security for generations to come.

Global bodies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predict that food production needs to grow by at least 70% over the next decade to meet global needs. Locally, with our rapidly expanding population, we must intensify agricultural production – but in ways that do not deplete our finite natural resources. By prioritizing funding for sustainable food initiatives, banks are anchoring themselves firmly within the broader conversation of national and global sustainability, not only addressing ESG expectations but also building long-term resilience into their own portfolios.

De-risking Agriculture to Unlock Investment

One of the greatest challenges in agricultural financing remains the perceived high risk of the sector. Traditionally, agriculture has been seen as a game of chance, highly dependent on erratic weather patterns. In recent years, prolonged dry spells have devastated harvests, especially for staple crops like maize, rice, and soya. To address this, financial institutions must champion investments in more reliable systems, such as irrigation schemes.

Ghana currently irrigates only about 1.7% of its arable land, significantly trailing regional counterparts. Increasing irrigation – even through simple interventions like boreholes – can make a transformative difference. However, building sustainable irrigation requires patient capital and private sector-led models to ensure ownership, maintenance, and long-term viability. Beyond irrigation, de-risking must involve developing robust crop and livestock insurance schemes and innovative financial products like inventory financing that allow farmers to pledge stored harvests as collateral. Through these innovations, we can shift agriculture from a high-risk venture to an investable, predictable business – paving the way for expanded financing.

Building Sustainable Food Systems through Financial Innovation

At Stanbic Bank Ghana, we recognize that traditional financial solutions do not fit the nuanced needs of the agriculture sector. That is why we have built sector expertise within the bank, hiring agricultural specialists who understand the dynamics and cycles of agribusiness. Our approach goes beyond offering plain vanilla products; instead, we provide tailored financial solutions that respond directly to the realities on the ground.

Through initiatives like our Africa-China banking proposition, we connect agricultural businesses with partners and suppliers in China, facilitating access to essential technologies such as farm machinery and processing equipment. We have also forged partnerships with development finance institutions like the World Bank, IFC, AfDB, and the Mastercard Foundation, enabling us to offer concessional lending and de-risk the agricultural sector.

Moreover, recognizing the shift towards digitalization, Stanbic Bank has invested heavily in digital platforms, ensuring that farmers and agribusinesses can access financial services conveniently without wasting productive time in banking halls. These interventions signal a deliberate, comprehensive strategy to support and grow Ghana’s sustainable food systems.

Policy, Education, and Farmer Empowerment

Achieving sustainable food systems will not happen overnight. There are gaps that must be addressed. Financial institutions must deepen their understanding of agriculture, which calls for a rethink of how we train and develop human capital in agricultural finance. More specialized education and skills development are needed to close knowledge gaps that stifle innovation in agricultural financing.

On the policy front, we must invest in the development of sector-specific financial products. Robust crop insurance, structured trade finance for inventory, and more tailored credit schemes for agribusinesses are not luxuries but necessities. Farmers themselves must also be empowered with the tools for adaptation and mitigation. They need access to improved seed varieties that mature faster and withstand climate extremes, as well as knowledge about regenerative practices like cover cropping, multi-cropping, and reduced chemical use. By embracing these innovations, farmers can both improve yields and protect the ecosystems they depend on.

Promoting sustainable food systems in Ghana is a shared responsibility. Financial institutions have a critical role to play, not just as funders, but as true partners in building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable agricultural economy. By doing so, we are not only ensuring our business success but also safeguarding the future prosperity of our nation.

BoG injects $20m into FX market to support 11 BDCs

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has injected $20 million into the foreign exchange market in the latest round of its forward FX auction targeted at Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs).

The intervention, which benefited eleven BDCs, is part of the central bank’s broader strategy to stabilise the cedi and ensure price stability in the petroleum downstream sector.

Held on Tuesday, April 29, the auction was priced at a locked exchange rate of GHS 14.28 to the US dollar, with bid offers ranging from GHS 13.85 to GHS 15.55.

This move reflects the BoG’s continued effort to deepen forex liquidity and safeguard the domestic fuel supply chain against volatility in global energy markets.

By directly supplying FX to BDCs, the central bank seeks to ease pressure on the interbank market, guarantee the uninterrupted flow of petroleum products, and mitigate the pass-through effects of exchange rate fluctuations on fuel prices.

The $20 million disbursement forms part of a $120 million programme for the second quarter of 2025, under which the BoG allocates funds fortnightly to qualified BDCs.

This targeted liquidity support reaffirms the central bank’s commitment to macroeconomic stability, particularly through interventions in critical sectors such as petroleum.

Kay9ice blesses young girl in ‘Pema’ viral video on stage

It was a heartwarming scene at this year’s Flora Tissues Atinka Kids Dance Season 3 Grand Finale when Ghanaian musician Kay9ice took a break from his performance to recognise a young fan who had the crowd cheering.

While performing his hit song Pema, Kay9ice spotted a little girl in the audience dancing with infectious energy and confidence, and making similar moves used as the official dance challenge.

The moment was too powerful to ignore, and in a surprise move, Kay9ice called the girl up on stage, praised her, and gifted her money on the spot.

The crowd erupted with applause as the young girl’s look was filled with joy, and the appreciation from the artist himself.

The viral video of the encounter is quickly gaining traction, with many calling it one of the most touching moments from the event this year.

Entertainment pundits have praised Kay9ice for his humility and support for the young fan, questioning if he will also finance the little girl’s tuition fees to the University like Wendy Shay, a colleague in the industry, did.

Prof Danquah appointed to serve on UKUDLA’s International Steering Committee

0

Accra, May 5, GNA – A new African-German research initiative designed to strengthen food systems and advance applied data science has been officially launched with the goal of equipping the next generation of African scientists to tackle pressing agricultural challenges.

Known as the African-German Centre for Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems and Applied Agricultural and Food Data Science (UKUDLA), the initiative was launched in January 2025 during the 11th German-African Agribusiness Forum.

In recognition of his expertise, Professor Eric Y. Danquah, Professor of Plant Genetics at the University of Ghana and Founding Director of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), has been appointed to serve on UKUDLA’s International Steering Committee.

A statement issued by the University of Ghana, copied to the Ghana News Agency, said Prof Danquah’s appointment highlights his outstanding contributions to agricultural research and capacity building in Africa.

It noted that as a member of the Committee, he would help shape the Centre’s strategic direction, advising on business planning, outreach, sustainability, partnerships and identifying new opportunities for impact.

It said the mandate of the UKUDLA was to offer cutting-edge training for postgraduate students, early-career researchers and university lecturers across the continent, enhancing their ability to drive transformative research and practical solutions for sustainable food systems.

It said the Centre’s work would focus on three core pillars including research, practical application and knowledge transfer.

The statement said it would provide structured, interdisciplinary training that connected applied data science directly to the realities of food security and agricultural development in Africa.

A dedicated Graduate Centre hosted at the University of Pretoria (UP) under the Future Africa Chair in Sustainable Food Systems will complement these activities by offering tailored mentorship and continuous learning opportunities.

The initiative’s key focus areas include building capacity to develop a new generation of scientists, advancing food systems through digital innovation and applied data science and fostering collaborative knowledge production by co-creating solutions with stakeholders across academia, industry, government and society.

The Centre is supported by a consortium of distinguished institutions, including the University of Hohenheim (Germany), the University of the Western Cape, the University of Pretoria, the University of Mpumalanga and the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Malawi.

It is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Federal Ministries and South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF).

The University of Ghana and the WACCI community congratulate Prof. Danquah on his appointment.

It is a fitting recognition of his leadership in agricultural science and his enduring commitment to improving food and nutrition security across the continent.

Mahama authored petitions against Chief Justice

0

Former Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), John Boadu, has alleged that President John Dramani Mahama personally authored the petitions calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

His comments come amid an ongoing process seeking the Chief Justice’s removal from office, a development that has stirred significant political controversy.

According to Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, a petition for the removal of a Chief Justice must be submitted to the President, who is then required to refer it to the Council of State. If a prima facie case is established, the matter proceeds to a committee for further investigation.

In the case of Chief Justice Torkonoo, three initial petitions were submitted by different individuals, all of which reportedly followed the constitutional process. Subsequently, two additional petitions were lodged, all calling for her removal.

Speaking at the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and allied political parties on Monday, May 5, 2025, Mr. Boadu cited public remarks made by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia and President Mahama as the basis of his assertion.

“Asiedu Nketia has been saying it all the time, the next place of reset is the judiciary, and then they will move to the electoral commission. President Mahama himself, on a platform, said that they are going to change the Chief Justice. So, I will not be surprised that he wrote the petitions himself,” he said.

When asked by Channel One News’ Hanson Agyeman whether his statement was a suggestion or a factual claim, Boadu responded emphatically:

“I am not suggesting. I am stating it as a fact that he has said on platforms that they are going to change the Chief Justice. Then he becomes president, and he wrote the petition to himself.”

Ho (V/R), May 5, GNA-Mr. Emmanuel Agbaxode, the Volta/Oti Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has called on media owners and stakeholders to give urgent attention to the conditions of service of journalists across the country.

Delivering his welcome address at the regional commemoration of World Press Freedom Day in Ho, Mr. Agbaxode highlighted the many challenges journalists faced, including inadequate remuneration, poor welfare systems, and difficult working conditions.

“If we expect journalism to thrive, then fair wages, professional development, and improved working conditions must be prioritized,” he said.

“This is not just a concern — it’s a call to action for all stakeholders to help build a more sustainable and dignified environment for media practice.”

This year’s celebration was held on the theme: “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”

Mr. Agbaxode noted that while the media continued to play a crucial role in governance and national development, many practitioners operated in an environment that lacked the necessary support and protections.

“Journalists are instrumental in amplifying the voices of our communities, exposing injustices, and holding leadership accountable. Their contribution to nation-building cannot be overstated,” he said. “Yet, many do this at great personal cost.”

He also praised the efforts of media owners in the region who, despite financial and operational constraints, continued to keep their platforms running and provided opportunities for journalists to serve the public.

Mr. Agbaxode reaffirmed the GJA Volta/Oti branch’s commitment to supporting journalists, promoting professionalism, and advocating policies that improved the welfare of media practitioners.

“On this special day, we salute our resilient journalists for their unwavering dedication to truth and public service,” he concluded.

A desperate dance for relevance, not justice – Alhaji Sinare

Alhaji Sinare is a former Ghanaian Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia Alhaji Sinare is a former Ghanaian Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia

Former Ghanaian Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, H.E. Alhaji Said Sinare, has launched a scathing attack on the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its plans to stage a demonstration against President John Dramani Mahama in response to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In a fiery Facebook post, the influential National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart dismissed the planned protest as a “hypocritical and politically bankrupt charade.”

Alhaji Sinare, who currently serves as the National Chairman of the Zongo Caucus Working Committee of the ruling NDC and is widely regarded as the “Zongo President,” accused the NPP of engaging in double standards.

He argued that the same party, which allegedly politicized and packed the judiciary with loyalists during its time in power, now seeks to champion judicial independence only because it suits their political agenda.

“The NPP has a disgraceful history of eroding institutional integrity for its own selfish gain,” Sinare wrote. “They shielded corrupt officials, manipulated judicial processes, and trampled on the independence of the courts. Now they feign outrage to revive their fading relevance,” he added.

The former Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central further urged Ghanaians to see through what he described as the NPP’s opportunistic theatrics. He called on the public to reject the demonstration, which he said is driven more by a thirst for power than any genuine concern for justice.

He also criticized Chief Justice Torkornoo, highlighting what he called “questionable rulings, administrative opacity, and perceived partisan bias,” which, according to him, have raised serious concerns about her impartiality.

“The suspension of the Chief Justice should be a moment for sober national reflection, not a stage for political drama,” he added.

Sinare’s statement, delivered with characteristic bluntness, concluded with a warning against joining what he sees as a misguided cause:

“This demonstration is not about justice; it’s about power, and it must be snubbed with the contempt it deserves—unless you want to burn fat!”

Background

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s suspension has sparked sharp reactions across Ghana’s political spectrum.

While the NPP has positioned itself as a defender of judicial independence, critics like Alhaji Sinare accuse the party of playing politics with the issue.

The NDC, for its part, has remained cautious in its official statements, though individual party figures such as Sinare have not held back in their criticism.

The government has inaugurated an eight-member Private Sector Participation (PSP) Steering Committee to provide strategic oversight for the implementation of the reintroduced Multiple Lease Model (MLM), aimed at transforming electricity distribution in Ghana.

The MLM approach, which segments electricity distribution services into regional units to be managed by various private operators, is designed to attract credible investors, enhance efficiency, reduce technical and commercial losses, and improve customer satisfaction nationwide.

The PSP Steering Committee will be chaired by Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, with Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister for Finance, serving as co-chair.

Other members include Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Trade and Agribusiness; Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, Attorney General and Minister for Justice; and Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications.

The remaining members are Julius Kpekpena, Acting Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG); John Okine Yamoah, Acting Managing Director of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo); and Madam Baba Akon, who will serve as Secretary to the Committee.

In a statement read on his behalf by the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan Mensah, at the inauguration in Accra, John Jinapor said the MLM is a cornerstone of the government’s broader energy sector recovery and modernisation strategy.

He explained that the Steering Committee will provide strategic direction for the PSP rollout, gather baseline data, including auditing the PSP deal—coordinate with ECG, NEDCo, regulatory bodies, and transaction advisors, and monitor progress across critical milestones.

“The Committee will also be responsible for reviewing and advising on transaction documents, procurement frameworks, draft agreements, risk mitigation strategies, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder communications,” John Jinapor stated.

He added that the PSP Implementation Unit within the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition will serve as the Secretariat to the Committee, offering administrative and technical support throughout the implementation process.

Jinapor tasked the Committee with ensuring that the procurement of technical, financial, and legal transaction advisors is completed by May 31, 2025, to facilitate the commencement of detailed implementation.

“By September 2025, we anticipate issuing the first phase of the competitive bidding documents for private concessionaires,” he said.

Three sub-committees; Technical, Governance & Regulatory, and Stakeholder Management, have also been established to support the process.

Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, Chair of the Technical Sub-Committee, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and called on Ghanaians to support the Committee as it undertakes its critical mandate.

“The road will be challenging and difficult, but I have confidence in the members. We will be able to live up to expectations by guiding the restructuring of the power distribution sector to ensure improved customer service,” he said.

Bawumia calls for support for Asantehene-led mediation to end Bawku crisis

0

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for the full cooperation of all parties involved in the protracted Bawku conflict with the mediation team led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in a bid to restore lasting peace to the troubled town in Ghana’s Upper East Region.

Speaking during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) national “Thank You” tour in Bolgatanga on Monday, Dr. Bawumia expressed profound sadness over the decades-long conflict between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups, which has recently flared up with deadly consequences.

“I feel so sad about this conflict and the killing of innocent people. Mamprusis and Kusasis are one people and this should not be happening. We understand each other’s language and we have intermarried so we are one people,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia appealed to all stakeholders and factions to support the ongoing mediation led by the Asantehene, describing the monarch’s efforts as crucial to achieving sustainable peace in the area.

“I pray the mediation team being led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo II, will be able to bring much-needed peace in Bawku. I want to urge the factions and all stakeholders to cooperate with the mediation team led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,” he said.

The former Vice President also condemned the politicisation of the conflict, accusing some politicians of fuelling the tensions for selfish purposes. “The politicisation of the crisis in Bawku is very unfortunate because some people do that for their own parochial interests, not the peace and stability of the area,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He alleged that falsehoods had been spread about his involvement in the conflict for political gain, including accusations that he was arming one side of the feud. “They played politics with the situation and went round lying to the people that I was behind it. They said I was buying guns for Mamprusis to kill Kusasis. These were the lies they spread against me and I was so sad when I heard it,” he lamented.

Dr. Bawumia further claimed that members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) spearheaded the misinformation, some of which, he noted, had unfortunately been believed even within his own party. “Furthermore, the events in Bawku now have clearly demonstrated that the NDC lied to the people of Bawku for political advantage and today, everyone has seen their lies,” he added.

“By the grace of God, many people have now seen their lies and the truth. Those who peddled these lies have now been exposed. This should be a lesson that nobody should play politics with the Bawku issue,” he cautioned.

Dr. Bawumia reiterated his call for unity and the depoliticisation of chieftaincy matters, stating, “As politicians, let us be careful in using chieftaincy issues to do politics. The NDC have done it and it is now hanging around their neck. I want peace in Bawku more than anybody.”

The Bawku conflict, rooted in a longstanding chieftaincy dispute, has claimed numerous lives and displaced many residents over the years. The government and traditional authorities, including the Asantehene, continue to explore avenues for lasting resolution.

Declare assets by May 7 or be dismissed- President to appointees

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, May 05, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has given his appointees, who failed to meet his March 31st deadline to declare their assets up to Wednesday, May 7, or consider themselves dismissed.

The Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, 1998 (Act 550) mandates public officials to declare their assets and liabilities upon their assumption of office.

The law aims to prevent corruption, detect illicit enrichment, and address conflicts of interest by requiring public officials to disclose their assets and liabilities.

President Mahama gave the firm directive when he unveiled a Code of Ethics and Conduct for his Ministers and appointees, charging them to abide by it.

The Code is to regulate the conduct of the President’s appointees, thereby ensuring transparency and accountability in Government.

He noted that the Code of Ethics was more than a code and that it was a declaration of intent.

“It is the foundation of a new ethos in public service, one that values ethics over expediency, duty over indulgence, country over self. We are here to serve and will serve with honor,” the President stated.

He recalled that on the 18th of February, he set a deadline of 31st of March, for all appointees who were taking office or being nominated at the time to declare their assets.

He said an update provided by the Auditor General to his office indicates that some of them failed to meet that deadline.

“For all those who were appointed or nominated before 31st of March 2025 and failed to meet the deadline, you are to forfeit three months of salary to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, named after me, Mahama Cares,” he said.

He said this was in addition to one month’s salary, that he had asked all appointees to donate to the Mahama Cares Trust Fund.

He noted that this means that those who omitted to declare assets by the date would be paying four months’ salary to Mahama Cares.

“However, if by close of day Wednesday, 7th of May 2025, any of you still fails to declare your assets, count yourself automatically dismissed,” he said.

The President said the assets declaration regime was an important mechanism to check corruption and abuse of office, and it must be respected by all.

“Strict compliance with this code will restore confidence in the political elite and help to consolidate our democracy.”

Mr Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, urged Ministers of State and other appointees of the President to abide by the Code of Ethics and Conduct.

Ghana is under siege, help us defend it – Afenyo-Markin tells Parliament

0

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on Members of Parliament to set aside partisan loyalties and unite in defence of Ghana’s democratic institutions, particularly the independence of the judiciary.

His remarks were made on Monday, May 5, during a protest by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama.

The protestors presented a petition to Parliament, which was received by Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.

Describing the current political climate as a threat to the country’s constitutional order, Mr. Afenyo-Markin pointed out, “Ghana is under siege. This is a call to all of us, regardless of political affiliation, to defend the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.”

He denounced what he called politically driven interference in the judiciary and urged Parliament to assert its constitutional mandate as a vital check on executive overreach.

“We cannot allow institutions of state to be undermined under the guise of accountability. Parliament must act as the last line of defence for our democracy,” he emphasised.

Nyaho Tamakloe accuses Akufo-Addo of still pulling strings behind the scenes

0

Founding member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nyaho Tamakloe has accused former President Akufo-Addo of continuing to exert influence over the party’s leadership, despite no longer holding office.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, May 4, the respected statesman said Akufo-Addo’s leadership style played a significant role in the party’s internal challenges and contributed to its defeat in the 2024 elections.
