We’ll resolve all outstanding issues in 4 constituencies in Ashanti Region

0

The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will work to resolve all outstanding issues in four constituencies in the Ashanti Region to make way for internal elections to be conducted.

Delegates in the Manhyia South Constituency did not take part in the NDC’s presidential and parliamentary primaries held over the weekend following some unresolved issues.

Fomena, Adansi Asokwa, Manhyia South and Mampong constituencies did not take part in the parliamentary elections, but delegates in these areas only took part in the presidential elections.

The party indicates that it will take the necessary steps to conduct internal elections in these constituencies before the end of 2023.

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi speaking to journalists during his monitoring of the elections on Saturday said the Ashanti region will be a deciding factor in the 2024 general elections.

He noted, “We have a year and a half before the general elections, and this is the first time NDC, we have conducted our primaries early. I can assure the good people of Ashanti Region especially Manhyia South that by the end of the year, we would have resolved that issue. It’s not only Manhyia South, we are having Adansi Asokwa, Fomena and Mampong. These constituencies were on hold for the parliamentary, but we will surely conduct the elections in these areas.

“The message is that we are going to take over Ashanti Region, and we are going to get maximum votes that will make former President John Mahama become the next president of Ghana in the 2024 general elections. Ashanti Region will be the deciding factor in that regard. And Insha Allah, we are going to get more seats. The signal is good that we are coming to power”.

Desmond Bredu

The Head of Client Coverage at Stanbic Investment Management Services (SIMS), Desmond Bredu, has underscored the importance of financial literacy, particularly for the youth, in realizing the full benefit of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Speaking at the ‘Women Lead Forum’ in Accra on the topic ‘Implementing the AfCFTA, Africa’s youth as catalysts for action and its success’, Desmond Bredu said financial literacy was crucial to ensure that Ghanaian youth are empowered to drive AfCFTA growth.

He mentioned that “There is a lot of potential in our youth to do remarkable things. They have the potential to push the AfCFTA program and create the development in Africa that we all want to see.”

SIMS is passionate about driving growth in Ghana and across Africa. That is why we have embarked on a series of campaigns targeted at youth to equip them with financial knowledge. This year, we plan on engaging even more people. This is to ensure that every young Ghanaian has access to financial education and skills. They will also be empowered to actively contribute to AfCFTA’s success.

Mr. Bredu also explained that the private sector needs proper incentivisation to work with the public sector to drive AfCFTA forward.

He said, “In order for the private sector to be involved in ACFTA, there must be incentives that make doing business easier like tax regimes.”

The ‘Women Lead Forum’ under the theme ‘Step It Up for AfCFTA’, was organized by the Southern Africa Embrace Foundation. It was supported by the ACFTA Secretariat.

Florida Professor Breaks Record For Time Spent Living Underwater |

0

A US researcher has broken the world record for the longest time spent living underwater without depressurisation.

Joseph Dituri has spent more than 74 days at the bottom of a 30ft-deep lagoon in Key Largo, Florida.

And he does not have plans to stop yet. On Sunday, he said he would stay in Jules’ Undersea Lodge for at least 100 days.

“The curiosity for discovery has led me here,” he said.

“My goal from day one has been to inspire generations to come, interview scientists who study life undersea and learn how the human body functions in extreme environments,” he added.

The previous world record for most days spent living underwater at ambient pressure – 73 – was established by two professors in 2014 in the same Key Largo lodge.

Unlike a submarine, the lodge does not use technology to adjust for the increased underwater pressure.

Prof Dituri – who goes by the nickname Dr Deep Sea – began his journey on 1 March at Jules’ Undersea Lodge, a small room that sits at the bottom of a lagoon in the Florida Keys.
It is named after Jules Verne, who wrote the well-known sci-fi book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

‘Absa 10% SME Loan Revolutionary’

0

Elsie Addo Awadzi

Second Deputy Governor, Bank Of Ghana (BOG), Elsie Addo Awadzi, has described Absa Bank Ghana and the Mastercard Foundation’s initiative to lend to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) at a rate of 10 per cent, without collateral, as revolutionary.

According to the Deputy Governor, the initiative per its design will address the SME finance gap in many ways including scaling up the volume of loans to SMEs, requiring no collateral for loans of up to GH¢ 1 million; and supporting such borrowers with much-needed capacity building and business supporting services.

“There is no gainsaying that SMEs are the bedrock of our economy, accounting for over 92 percent of all businesses many of which are owned by women and young entrepreneurs, and contributing about 70 percent of Ghana’s GDP,” she said.

She however noted that despite the important role played by SMEs in the country, access to finance for SMEs remains a perennial challenge, indicating that the finance gap impedes a critical segment from surviving, growing, and playing a more meaningful role in the socio-economic development.

Thus, while acknowledging the two institutions for the feat chalked, she challenged them to do even more by deepening their partnership to ensure that even more SMEs benefit from this initiative beyond the 5,000 expected at this juncture.

“I also expect that even lower interest rates will be offered to SMEs with time especially as inflation continues on a downward path as we have seen consistently over the last four months including with the just-released inflation reading for April 2023 at 41.2 percent down from 45 percent in March 2023,” she noted.

The initiative is a landmark move set to transform the landscape of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Ghana as it marks a turning point for women-owned businesses, young entrepreneurs, agribusinesses, and fintechs in Ghana.

Nigerian chef, Hilda Effiong Bassey, popularly known as Hilda Baci, has broken the Guinness World Record for the “longest cooking marathon by an individual”.

Baci launched into the competition on Thursday at exactly 4pm when she put on her cooker.

Hilda carries on despite having broken the record as she aims to cook for 96 hours, setting a new world record as the first human on earth to spend such an amount of time cooking.

The Chef has continued to receive a wave of support from government officials, celebrities, clerics, and other well-meaning Nigerians.

This is even as Nigerians stood by her despite a heavy downpour in the wee hours of Monday morning in Lagos.

Earlier, Chef Tondon who previously held the record for the ‘longest cooking time’ had sent her benign wishes to Hilda.

Also, her native Akwa Ibom State governor, Udom Emmanuel, on Sunday evening, called Hilda Baci, and commended her for representing the best attributes of the Dakkada philosophy of the State.

“This is what our Dakkada philosophy is all about; the determination to dare and conquer what others thought to be impossible. We salute you for putting our culinary skills on full display and of course, our nationally and internationally celebrated cuisines.

“You are an inspiration to millions of Nigerians, and especially our dear Akwaibomites. We are all solidly behind you as you embark on this inspirational moment. We look forward to hosting you soon,” the governor told her.

Earlier, President-elect Bola Tinubu, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, among others, identified with Hilda Baci.

Absa Bank to deliver loans at 10% to SMEs

0

In a landmark move set to transform the landscape of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Ghana, Absa Bank Ghana and the Mastercard Foundation have partnered to offer an unprecedented support programme that will elevate SMEs and propel their growth to new heights.

This initiative marks a turning point for women-owned businesses, young entrepreneurs, agribusinesses, and fintechs in Ghana, as they will now have access to borrow money from Absa Bank at a remarkably low rate of 10%, without collateral. The timing could not be better, as the average commercial borrowing rates in Ghana have soared above 25%, making it harder for businesses to thrive and achieve their full potential.

Absa Bank Ghana has always been committed to the growth and success of small and medium-sized businesses, recognizing their power to transform the economy of the country. This support programme is an exciting development that reflects the bank’s unwavering commitment to empowering and partnering with SMEs as they navigate the challenges of today’s marketplace.

Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana, Abena Osei-Poku, has described the programme as a groundbreaking moment in the bank’s journey to transform the landscape of Ghanaian businesses “We are not just a bank – we are a partner in Ghana’s real sector growth. We are committed to making an impact within our communities, to supporting the dreams and aspirations of SMEs as they contribute to the total transformation of the Ghanaian economy.”

The programme is one of the most compelling stories of hope and possibility in a world that is grappling with uncertainty and volatility. The Mastercard Foundation is offering capacity support and guidance for the programme while Absa Bank will take care of the lending aspect of the initiative.

This development is a beacon of hope for small and medium businesses in Ghana, as it presents a unique opportunity to access capital at an incredibly low rate, empowering them to create jobs, drive economic growth and unlock their full potential. It is an investment in Ghana’s future, and Absa Bank Ghana is leading the charge to transform the economy by supporting and partnering with these businesses, one story at a time.

Mahama Leads NDC… 17 MPs Fall

0

John Mahama. INSET: ABA Fuseini, Della Sowah, Sampson Chiragia, Kwabena Donkor

After losing the 2020 presidential election, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has overwhelmingly re-elected former President John Dramani Mahama as their nominee for the 2024 general election.

He polled 297,603, representing 98.9 per cent of the total valid votes cast to defeat his only contender, Kojo Bonsu, who managed to secure 3,181, representing 1.1 per cent.

Mr. Mahama will not challenge current President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has beaten him twice, in next year’s election but, rather a new candidate to be chosen by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

After succeeding his deceased predecessor, former President John Atta Mills, in 2012 and winning the election later in the year, he was defeated in the 2016 election and again in 2020 by President Akufo-Addo.

Vote-Buying

The NDC primaries were marred by vote-buying and other voting irregularities in some constituencies, which are being investigated by the police.

In the Ashanti Region for example, Juliana Kinang-Wassan, one of the parliamentary candidates for the Ejura Sekyedumase Constituency, was seen throwing money at a crowd during the NDC presidential and parliamentary primaries.

“A dedicated legal team is currently scrutinising her conduct in the video to establish whether there are elements of election-related crime to warrant police intervention or otherwise,” the police said in a statement.

Mahama’s Speech

After the final declaration of the polls on Saturday, Mr. Mahama said, “I am humbled by the overwhelming vote of confidence reposed in me by the party.”

He expressed gratitude to God and the party’s delegates for bringing the NDC this far, saying, “In your usual astute manner, you turned up in your numbers, across the country, to vote in our party’s presidential and parliamentary elections.”

He also thanked Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and Mr. Kojo Bonsu for their contest and indicated that their contest in the NDC primary has cemented the party’s “enviable record as the most democratic political tradition in the country,” even though Dr. Duffuor pulled out from the race a day to the primaries, citing election irregularities.

“Let us disagree to agree but let us keep our collective sights firmly on the supreme objective of the NDC leading Ghana out of the current abyss the country is in,” he intimated.

Mr. Mahama also asked for cooperation among all elected parliamentary candidates and their respective aspirants and supporters in the constituencies, asserting that there are no individual winners and losers in intra-party contest.

“I want to thank my campaign and operational teams for keeping their focus and delivering a clean campaign.

“I thank our donors and financiers for your support; the media for propagating our message and all our religious and traditional leaders who prayed on our behalf for the peace and success we have achieved today,” he stated.

He said he would today, at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, be joined by a teeming number of the rank and file of the NDC and Ghanaians in general, to deliver his formal acceptance speech.

Concession

Meanwhile, Kojo Bonsu, who contested the former President, has conceded defeat.

The former Kumasi Mayor said he called John to congratulate him on his resounding victory in the presidential primary.

“I have placed a call to H.E. John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him for the landslide victory. Just as I’ve indicated throughout my campaign, regardless of the outcome of this election I’ll continue to serve the NDC party,” he said in a Facebook post.

Supporting SMEs is the heartbeat of our business [Article]

0

Ghana and Africa’s ability to put its people, especially the youth, to work and to create an inclusive, progressive economy, depends significantly on the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

This is a known fact. But how to fuel the sustainable growth of SMEs is the running task that various stakeholders have been working on over the years.

Research shows that SMEs present a higher business risk compared to other businesses. Conventional finance and economic theory suggest that higher risk needs to be compensated by higher returns (higher pricing). This brings to the fore a development finance conundrum: How does financial institutions provide funding to SMEs that can least afford risk adjusted pricing?

To address the challenge, banks, governments, and other development partners have, over the last two decades, implemented several interventions to bring financing of SMEs into mainstream support with mixed results. In my experience, there remains work to be done in product/process innovation, further regulatory enablement of SME financing and elevating the social and developmental angle of SME funding in the corridors of private capital.

Absa Bank Ghana has been on a journey over the last half a decade to design and offer a bouquet of solutions that truly and fully offer the help that SMEs need to survive and thrive. I am happy to announce that two unprecedented and groundbreaking products in our SME banking portfolio have arrived, taking our offering and support to levels never seen before in Ghana:

The first is an SME loan at 10%.

  • Yes, 10%. Recognizing that we need to sacrifice and invest in the future of SMEs, Absa has decided to provide loans to women-led SMEs, youth entrepreneurs, and fintech/agritech businesses at 10%. The call to enable the economic recovery, create jobs and support these sectors cannot be achieved if we stick doggedly to conventional market rates of return in all instances.  There is the need to sacrifice and deploy incentives in a targeted manner; and we are happy to lead in this direction.

The second is:

  • Collateral-free loans up to GHS1,000,000. We have progressed our first in market collateral-free loan product to reduce the stress on the customer and deliver funds to successful applicants in record time. Having traveled the length and breadth of Ghana, I acutely understand how the speed of response from banks is important to saving SMEs from penal charges, demurrage at ports, exorbitant interest rates from non-bank lenders, amongst others. At Absa bank, we are constantly challenging ourselves to do more to transform these businesses and contribute to Ghana’s socio-economic growth.

Our partnership with the Mastercard Foundation has also made GHS2.5 million available to fund early-stage SMEs/Agritech and Fintech startups. These are all part of a concerted effort to elevate our commitment to the key sectors that are critical to Ghana’s economic growth.

There’s ‘no hope’ in title race after loss to Brighton

0

Arsenal have conceded 25 goals at home in the Premier League this season, their joint-most in a single campaign (level with 2001-02)

While mathematically it’s not yet confirmed, the faces of the Arsenal players at the end of their 3-0 defeat by Brighton on Sunday made it clear they knew the Premier League title race was over.

Some stood staring into the distance, and others sat on the pitch and looked at the ground as their opponents raced over to the away end to celebrate with their jubilant fans.

This game felt like the last-chance saloon for Arsenal. They still needed the unlikely scenario of Manchester City slipping up in their remaining three games, but a win was a must if they were to stay in the hunt.

Instead, they capitulated as Brighton scored three second-half goals to strengthen their fairytale bid to secure European football next season.

The loss means Arsenal are four points behind leaders Manchester City and have just two games remaining. Pep Guardiola’s side know a win against Chelsea at the Etihad next Sunday means the title will be theirs again.

“It is going to be very difficult now, we have to be honest. It is tough to take,” Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard told Sky Sports.

“It is not a good feeling at the moment. The way we played, particularly in the second half, I don’t know what happened to be honest.

“It feels like there is no hope now.”

Arteta sorry for ‘unacceptable’ performance

Arsenal had been the better side in the first half as ex-Brighton forward Leandro Trossard hit the bar, but Julio Enciso gave the Seagulls the lead six minutes into the second half and the Gunners got progressively worse as they realised their chances of staying in the title race were rapidly diminishing.

Substitute Deniz Undav pounced on a deflected clearance four minutes from time to put victory out of Arsenal’s reach before Pervis Estupinan rubbed salt in the wound deep in stoppage time.

By then, many Arsenal fans had left, crushed that the one glimmer of hope of winning their first Premier League title since 2004 was all but extinguished.

“We have to apologise for the performance in the second half. It was not acceptable,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

“Mathematically, it’s still possible but now it’s impossible to think about it. We need to digest the result and the performance in the second half, understand why and have a different reaction.”

‘The last few weeks have been too much for Arsenal’

Earlier in the day, Manchester City had comfortably beaten Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park to extend their winning run in the Premier League to 11 games.

It was a result that former Manchester United captain Gary Neville felt had delivered a psychological blow to the Arsenal players before their game.

“I think that’s it finished,” the Sky Sports pundit said of the title race.

“It was a difficult game for Manchester City on paper but they strolled it and that has had an impact on those Arsenal players.

“It has been too much for them over the past few weeks. This moment was always going to come where Arsenal find it difficult and they haven’t been able to get through it.”

Arsenal fans look dejected as they leave the Emirates following the 3-0 home loss to Brighton

Arsenal fans looked dejected as they left the Emirates following the 3-0 home loss to Brighton

April started with a 4-1 thrashing of Leeds that moved Arsenal eight points clear at the top of the Premier League but the month ended with a defeat by the same scoreline at Manchester City to put Guardiola’s side in the driving seat.

April also saw them throw away two two-goal leads – to Liverpool and West Ham – as well as going 2-0 down at home to Southampton after just 14 minutes.

Those dropped points ultimately proved pivotal, and former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira believes the Gunners need more leaders in their side to help them through such difficult moments.

“You want leadership and he [Odegaard] has been the technical leader on the field but they are missing a physical leader, a leader who can get at the back of players when they are not performing at the right level,” he said.

“They need a team that is more competitive. You look at the physical attributes of Manchester City and they are bigger and stronger than Arsenal.

“It’s up to Mikel to address that in the summer.”

A huge summer ahead?

Arsenal have spent much of the season at the top of the table so it is understandable many of their fans will be hurting right now over a missed opportunity.

But there has still been big progress, with Arteta’s side sealing a return to the Champions League for the first time in six years.

“Arsenal don’t have the strength and depth of Manchester City,” former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane said. “They have come up short. It’s as simple as that.

“They need to get the right players with the right character so if they get in this position again, pole position, they will have a chance to see it through.”

Arsenal have two games left of the current campaign before a huge summer begins in which they will look to recruit the right players to ensure they are better equipped to overcome the hurdles they stumbled at this season.

Samira Bawumia Celebrates Mother’s Day With Tagoe Sisters

Samira Bawumia has praised Ghanaian gospel music duo Tagoe Sisters for not only being great at what they do but also being great mothers.

This was after she joined the duo and other mothers at The Mirror’s Mothers’ Day Buffet Lunch, a ceremony to honour mothers as part of this year’s Mother’s Day celebration on Sunday.

The two musicians are one of the longest-serving gospel groups in Ghana. Made up of Lydia Dedei Yawson Nee Tagoe and Elizabeth Korkoi Tagoe, they have been singing in the gospel music industry since 1983 and have several records to their belt.

The twin sisters received Model Mothers Award at The Mirror’s Mother’s Day Buffet Lunch programme.

This was also to honour their exploits as mothers beyond their public life as exceptional musicians.

The Second Lady indicated that she is proud of the group in a social media post.

She shared photos from the Mother’s Day event including that of the Tagoe Sisters on Facebook and congratulated them on the new honour bestowed on them.

She wrote, “I had the pleasure of joining our dear mothers at The Mirror’s Mother’s Day Buffet Lunch, today in Accra. Our mothers deserve to be celebrated every day for their invaluable roles in our lives. Congratulations to the evergreen Tagoe Sisters on being awarded “Model Mothers” of the Year. Happy Mother’s Day!”

NDC will push the elephant back into the bush – Ashaiman MP

0

Ernest Henry Norgbey

Parliamentary candidate-elect and sitting Member of Parliament for Ashaiman constituency, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has charged party faithful to brace for the task ahead which will see the New Patriotic Party (NPP) back into opposition.

He said NPP symbolised by the elephant must be kicked out of power in the 2024 elections having performed abysmally since assuming office in 2017.

Although NPP would be seeking to break the 8-year jinx under the 4th Republic, he believes it is only through hard work that the NDC could thwart this attempt.

Speaking to Adom News, Mr Norgbey was elated having been elected to contest on the ticket of NDC in the 2024 parliamentary election.

“What is ahead of us is bigger than what we are seeing today. What is ahead of us is to fight the common enemy, be it Dr. Bawumia or Alan Kyerematen at the end of 2024.

“And so we have to work together as one family. To make sure we push the elephant back to the bush.”

He admits wrestling power from the current administration would be a herculean task but uniting as a common force under the umbrella which represents the NDC can make this achievable.

“I want to thank everybody. I thank my competitors for giving me a good run for my money. Despite today being a bad one for my competitors, I want to extend my olive branch to them so they come on board as we work towards victory 2024.”

According to the MP who will be seeking his third term, being given the nod only goes to show the trust the consistency has in him.

$600m IMF Cash Coming

0

Ken Ofori-Atta

Ghana is poised to receive the first tranche of a $3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as it battles to repair its battered economy.

Ghana hopes to secure approval for a previously agreed package of $600 million, with disbursement likely by next week, according to Mohammed Amin Adam, a Minister of State in the Ghana’s Finance Ministry.

He told Reuters that “We expect a deal on Wednesday. With the disbursement, there is going to be $600 million as a first tranche just immediately after the approval,” Adam said by phone, adding that Ghana hoped to receive the funds within a week of the board’s decision.

According to the minister, a further $600 million is set to be released following a successful first review, with the remaining $1.8 billion distributed in equal instalments after semi-annual assessments.

He explained that the funds will help Ghana work towards the goal of holding three months’ worth of imports in foreign reserves by 2026.

The Minister expected negotiations with both sets of creditors to go well once the IMF signs off on the loan.

“Confidence is going to be restored and we expect that stakeholders will cooperate and will be encouraged to negotiate favourable terms with us,” he said, adding that the date for talks had not yet been set for either group.

Adam said the government was far along in talks with the World Bank to provide additional support of $900 million to be disbursed in three equal instalments of $300 million over three years.

“We are far advanced, almost concluding negotiations,” he said

He revealed that the government was also in talks with the African Development Bank for over $100 million for the stability fund.

Like other emerging markets, Ghana is grappling with a debt restructuring after the economic shock of COVID-19 and other political and economic challenges.

Ghana is seeking $3 billion from the Fund to shore up its battered economy. On Friday, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said Ghana’s official creditors had provided the necessary financing assurances for the IMF Executive Board to look at signing off on the loan.

Koa launches its first cocoa fruit juice, Koa Natural in Ghana

0

A Swiss-Ghanaian cocoa social enterprise Koa, has introduced its first cocoa fruit juice to the West African market through its gateway
Ghana.

Since 1895, when the first cocoa tree was planted in the Akuapem Mountains in Ghana, there has always been a focus on the value of the cocoa bean for chocolate applications.

However, there is more than just beans. Through innovative technology, Koa has developed a uniquely healthy and natural fruit juice with impact at its heart. Thanks to the use of the white cocoa pulp, Koa creates additional income for cocoa smallholders and new jobs in the cocoa-growing communities.

Koa is celebrating another milestone as the Swiss-Ghanaian company launches a cocoa fruit juice, Koa Natural, in Ghana for the first time.

The product, ‘Koa Natural’, is an all-natural juice produced from the white, fleshy part that surrounds the cocoa bean. The fresh juice is gently processed, with no added sugars, sweeteners or additives, to preserve the authentic natural sweet taste of the cocoa fruit.

The newest addition to the Ghanaian market provides a fresh taste from cocoa and naturally contains potassium and magnesium. These minerals have health benefits such as regulating the heartbeat, ensuring proper function of the muscles and nerves, and are vital for synthesizing protein and metabolizing carbohydrates.

Koa Natural is a versatile product. The smooth texture and tropical flavour are great on their own, and it is also an exciting ingredient for cocktails, mocktails or even savoury foods.

Since its inception, Koa has collaborated with numerous local and international chefs as well as the international food and beverage industry, to develop recipes that enhance the salty, sweet and beverage applications of the juice.

As Koa Natural is produced from previously unused cocoa fruit pulp, the juice processing provides an extra income to Ghana’s cocoa farmers due to the additional product created from the cocoa pod.

At the same time, Koa’s processing facility creates local jobs in Ghana’s cocoa-growing regions, contributing to the economy and responsible growth in cocoa communities.

Koa Natural is now available for sale in Ghana. To buy Koa Natural visit our Accra office or contact us to arrange delivery.

About Koa

The Swiss-Ghanaian start-up Koa upcycles the pulp of the cocoa pod, thus reducing food waste and providing cocoa smallholders with an additional income.

Today, 71 employees in Ghana and Switzerland dedicate themselves to the growth of Koa to boost value creation in the cocoa-growing regions and to develop innovative and pioneering processes.

As a B Corp™, Koa incorporates its mission into its business activities to benefit people and the environment. With natural fruit products, Koa brings a fresh taste from cocoa to the Ghanaian market.

IMF deal: Ghana will return to international capital market soon

0

The government is optimistic that Ghana will be able to return to the international capital market as soon as possible.

Ghana is on the verge of securing a US$ 3 billion IMF bailout to help with the country’s balance of payment problems, with the first tranche of US$600m expected to be authorized by Wednesday and disbursed within a week.

The second tranche of $600 million is scheduled to be authorized following a successful first review of the program, which is expected to occur in November or December, with the remainder distributed in equal tranches of $360 million following semi-annual reviews.

Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, Minister of State in the Finance Ministry, feels this paves the road for Ghana’s return to the international market.

“We will go back to the market because we will leverage on the IMF deal to balance our financing needs. We have development partners supporting, but a chunk of our inflows will come from the market so with the IMF approval, we are very confident that investor confidence in Ghana will increase. The institutions upgrading us will look favourably to Ghana and then as a result of all these, we could return to market very soon”, he said on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, May 15.

Following economic downgrades by international rating agencies and Ghana’s creditworthiness to junk status amidst poor fiscal policy measures, the government has already said, a successful IMF program will make Ghana regain access to the international capital market for economic rebound.

“It depends on how quickly we get to sustainable levels. We are hoping at attaining sustainable levels by 2028. If that is achieved, it’s possible. As for borrowing, you can’t say you won’t borrow. In as much we don’t borrow for ourselves so going to the market is a matter of course if the conditions are favourable”, Dr. Amin Adam added.

Barcelona crowned La Liga champions after derby win

0

Barcelona’s players celebrated on the pitch after claiming their 27th La Liga championship

Barcelona sealed their first La Liga title since 2018-19 with four games to spare after a stylish win at the home of city rivals Espanyol.

Barca were 3-0 up by half-time, Robert Lewandowski scoring his 20th league goal of the season before Alejandro Balde, 19, doubled the lead.

Lewandowski added the third before Jules Kounde’s header made it 4-0.

Espanyol did reduce the deficit through Javier Puado and Joselu but remain in trouble near the bottom of the table.

Barcelona have 85 points, 14 more than nearest rivals Real Madrid, with 12 points left to play for.

It is their first La Liga title since club legend Lionel Messi left in August 2021 and first since Xavi was appointed manager in November 2021.

Meanwhile, Espanyol are in danger of a second relegation in four seasons from La Liga after a ninth league defeat in 11 games.

They are four points from safety with four matches left.

Xavi delivers in first full season

Barcelona’s players will have to wait to get their hands on the trophy but they celebrated after the full-time whistle before making a hasty retreat to the dressing room after some Espanyol fans dashed on to the pitch.

Barca trailed Real Madrid by three points after losing 3-1 away to them on 16 October, while they made a disappointing exit from the Champions League after losing three of their six group games.

But Xavi, who won eight La Liga titles during a distinguished 17-year career playing in Barca’s first team, has delivered in his first full season in charge.

It was a particularly emotional night for captain Sergio Busquets, who has confirmed he will leave Barcelona at the end of the season after 18 years at the club.

This is the 34-year-old’s ninth league title with Barca but the future looks promising for the side, with Balde and Kounde scoring their first La Liga goals in Barcelona colours.

Barcelona will move out of their Nou Camp home next season while the stadium is redeveloped.

But fans will get a chance to celebrate the club’s first major trophy since 2020-21 during their last two home games – against Real Sociedad on Saturday and Mallorca on 28 May.

Stonebwoy celebrates Mother’s Day with widows in Ashaiman

Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artist Stonebwoy, on Sunday, May 14,  celebrated Mother’s Day in a unique way by spending time with widows in his native-Ashaiman community at a special event held at the Royal Nick Hotel.

While the occasion is typically associated with buying gifts and spending time with family, Stonebwoy recognized that not everyone has the same opportunities or resources to celebrate. The internationally acclaimed musician, known for his socially conscious music, used the occasion to give back to those who may have felt forgotten or overlooked on this special day, particularly widows.

As part of the activities, he had dinner with the attendees and gave them money for upkeep, as well as presented them with gifts, including food and household items.

Speaking at the event, Stonebwoy emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting widows on Mother’s Day, saying, “It is important to appreciate and show love to our mothers, especially those who have lost their partners and may be going through difficult times. We wanted to show them that they are not forgotten and that we care about them.” He expressed his appreciation for mothers and the sacrifices they make to raise their children. He emphasized that widows, in particular, face challenges in providing for their families and need all the support they can get.

The widows who benefited from Stonebwoy’s generosity were overjoyed and grateful for the kind gesture. Many of them expressed their gratitude to Stonebwoy and his team for remembering them on such a special day.

The event was organized in collaboration with The Livingstone Foundation, the charitable arm of Stonebwoy’s Burniton Group that aims to empower youth and disadvantaged communities through education, music, and sports. The foundation’s Mother’s Day outreach program sought to honour and support widows in the community who may not have family or other support systems to rely on.

Stonebwoy recently launched a borehole project to empower underserved communities through clean water access.

Haruna Iddrisu makes history for running as unopposed Tamale South MP for 4 consecutive terms

0

Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu holds the record as the only MP to have gone unopposed four times in a parliamentary primary under the 4th republican Constitution.

The former Minority leader went unopposed in the NDC last weekend May 13, delegates’ congress of the party that selected presidential and parliamentary candidates for the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The tamale south constituency under the leadership of Haruna Iddrisu secured 100 per cent votes for former President John Mahama.

With a delegate population of 2,068, all of them voted for the former President and fully endorsed Haruna Iddrisu to go for the sixth term.

Speaking to the delegates before the nationwide parliamentary and presidential primaries being held by the party, the former Minority Leader said the former President is the only candidate with the capacity to lead the party to victory.

“Probably without prejudice to the voting rights of delegates, it may appear unanimous in the constituency in the choice of the flagbearer.

“You know the chosen one. It is his time. It is his time to end his [Nana Akufo-Addo’s] governance and end the sufferings of Ghanaians”, he urged the delegates.

After being a student leader for years during his tertiary education, Haruna Iddrisu transitioned into mainstream national politics and rose to become the National Youth Organiser for the National Democratic Congress in 2002.

He held that position for eight years even whilst he was the Minister of Communications until stepping down in 2010.

Haruna first stood for MP in the 2004 parliamentary election in the then-newly formed Tamale South Constituency.

He served as the Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications and also the Minority Spokesman on Communications in the fourth Parliament when the NDC was in opposition.

He retained his seat in the 2008 parliamentary election by gaining 78.2% of the total votes cast. He once again retained his seat in the 2012 parliamentary elections by getting 74.6% of the total votes cast.

Even though his party lost the Presidential Elections, Haruna retained his seat in the 2016 elections and was selected to lead the Minority Caucus as the Minority Leader of the 7th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana.

He served as the Minority Leader for NDC in Ghana’s 8th Parliament from January 2017 till January 2023.

He has also held various positions in government, including Minister for Communications under the Mills and Mahama governments as well as Minister for Trade between 2013 and 2014.

He was appointed the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations by President Mahama in July 2014.

Mass Vaccination Drive Begins In Malawi After Deadly Storm | Health

0

Malawi on Monday kicked off a mass vaccination drive to inoculate more than 9 million children against several life-threatening diseases, as it seeks to prevent a health crisis after deadly Cyclone Freddy.

The cyclone killed more than 1,000 people in the southern African country, according to Malawi’s president. It was one of the deadliest storms to hit Africa in recent memory, ripping through Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar in late February and March.

The one-week nationwide vaccination drive will target children up to the age of 15 and deliver vaccines against typhoid fever, measles, rubella and polio, said partners including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and global vaccine alliance GAVI.

Children will also be offered a vitamin A supplement, the agencies said in a joint statement, adding that immediately after the campaign the typhoid vaccine will become routinely available in the country for babies at health centres.

The campaign had already been planned before the storm, but is especially critical in its aftermath since destruction and displacement can increase the risk of diseases, they said.

“Malawi has demonstrated remarkable resilience in the aftermath of a devastating cyclone,” said Thabani Maphosa, managing director of country programme delivery at GAVI, in a statement.

“Not only is it introducing a new vaccine, which is never an easy task, it becomes one of the first countries in the world to make the lifesaving typhoid conjugate vaccine routinely available to children,” he added.

Typhoid Fever, caused by a bacteria, is usually spread by ingesting contaminated food or water and can be fatal. Natural disasters and displacement increase the risk of typhoid outbreaks, said health officials, especially in a country such as Malawi that has endemic typhoid transmission.

“This is a significant step for Malawi,” said Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa.

Man City two wins from title with win at Everton

0

Erling Haaland has scored 52 goals for Manchester City this season

Manchester City require two victories to retain the Premier League title after despatching relegation-threatened Everton at Goodison Park.

Pep Guardiola’s side will be guaranteed their third title in a row with six points from their remaining games against Chelsea, Brighton and Brentford.

But the Toffees were made to pay a heavy price for Mason Holgate’s glaring miss when unmarked at the far post, the defender somehow hooking over from a couple of yards.

City were second best up until that point but showcased how clinical they are in front of goal by going to the other end and netted twice in the space of two minutes.

Ilkay Gundogan was the star of the show, involved in all three of City’s goals with a sublime flicked finish before providing the cross for Erling Haaland’s close range header.

The midfielder curled in a glorious free-kick from the edge of the area in the second half as City moved four points clear at the top, though Arsenal can claw back the deficit with victory over Brighton later on Sunday.

The loss for Everton leaves them looking nervously over their shoulders with two games remaining, hovering just one point above the relegation zone.

Arsenal lose to Brighton to leave Man City on brink

0

Brighton have won their past three matches at Emirates Stadium in the league and cup

Arsenal’s fading title hopes were dealt a devastating blow after losing to Brighton to leave leaders Manchester City one win from a fifth Premier League title in six seasons.

The Gunners needed to respond after City’s 3-0 win over Everton earlier on Sunday left Mikel Arteta’s side trailing by four points in the race for the title.

On a deeply frustrating day for Arsenal, Leandro Trossard hit the bar against his former club while Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka both went close before Julio Enciso’s close-range header put Brighton ahead.

Substitute Deniz Undav doubled the lead after lobbing Aaron Ramsdale in the 86th minute before Pervis Estupinan added to Arsenal’s misery with Brighton’s third in the 96th minute.

City will win the Premier League title next Sunday in front of their own fans if they beat Chelsea at home (16:00 BST), even if Arsenal defeat Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday (17:30).

However, City will be confirmed champions without playing on Saturday if the Gunners lose at Forest.

In a game littered with niggly fouls, Arsenal lost Brazil forward Gabriel Martinelli to injury in the first half after a foul by Brighton’s Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo, who the Gunners tried to sign in January.

Brighton, who are chasing a place in Europe for the first time, had gone close through Enciso before the Paraguay forward stunned the Emirates with his 51st-minute goal.

The win lifted the Seagulls above both Aston Villa and Tottenham into sixth on 58 points, four behind fifth-placed Liverpool with one game in hand.

The maximum number of points Arsenal can score is 87, while City have 85 with matches against Chelsea (home), Brighton (away) and Brentford (away) to come.

Arsenal’s title hopes evaporate after damaging defeat at home to Brighton » ™-

– –

Arsenal’s hope of landing their first premier league title over two decades slipped through their hands after they lost against Brighton on Sunday.

The Gunners were humiliated 3-0 at home by European contenders Brighton & Hove Albion. Longtime league leaders Arsenal knew only a victory would do as tenacious Manchester City won at Everton in the early kickoff to pull four points ahead.

With games remaining against the clubs in front of them, the outcome also propelled Brighton up to sixth place. Leandro Trossard, a former Brighton forward for Arsenal, hit the crossbar in the opening period, but after Enciso’s goal in the 51st minute and following Undav’s lob over Aaron Ramsdale in the 86th, Arsenal appeared defeated.

– –

To the pleasure of Brighton’s supporters, who may soon be watching the club’s maiden foray into European play, Estupinan put an end to Arsenal’s suffering in stoppage time.

Arsenal’s fifth league loss has left them with 81 points with two games left, compared to City’s 85 points with three games left.

Pep Guardiola’s team needs to beat Chelsea on Sunday to clinch City’s fifth title in six seasons. In the event that Arsenal loses to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, City might even win it before then. With four games left, Brighton has 58 points.

“Yeah, it looks difficult now, to be honest, we have to be realistic. I don’t think City are going to do too many mistakes now,” Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard said.

“It is not a good feeling at the moment. The way we played, particularly in the second half, I don’t know what happened, to be honest. It feels like there is no hope now.”

There was a hint of resignation in the air among Arsenal’s fans as they streamed towards the Emirates Stadium after hearing of Manchester City’s earlier 3-0 victory at Everton — an 11th successive league win for City.

OmniBSIC Bank Delivers Strong, Resounding Results | Banking/Finance

0

OmniBSIC Bank Ghana Limited ended the first quarter of 2023 on a positive note, with a stellar performance that defies the challenges facing the local banking sector.

This was achieved through a concerted effort by the bank to improve operational efficiency, funded income, and asset quality.

The bank’s strong performance resulted in profit before tax growing by 500 per cent to GH¢52.12 million in the first three months of 2023.

OmniBSIC Bank’s results showed that profit before tax was GH¢8.69 million in the same quarter of 2022 but surged to GH¢52.12 million last quarter on the back of strong growth in all revenue lines.

Its financial performance that was published last week showed that OmniBSIC also remained liquid and well-capitalized. The bank’s liquidity ratio stood at 91.4 per cent, indicating a liquid and resilient bank.

The capital adequacy ratio (CAR) was also 23.5 per cent, reflecting a well-capitalized bank at a time when the economic crisis has eroded the capitals of most banks.

Drivers of profit

OmniBSIC grew its interest income by 204 per cent within the period. It rose from GH¢58.02 million in the first quarter of 2022 to GH¢176.28 million in the same quarter this year.

The bank’s non-funded income also grew by about 98 per cent from GH¢17million to GH¢34 million as a result of a rapid increase in commission and fees and trading income.

Strong balance sheet

In addition to the strong showing in its financial soundness indicators, OmniBSIC also posted significant growth in its earning assets. Investments more than doubled from GH¢1.17 billion in the first quarter of 2022 to GH¢2.89 billion in the quarter under review.

The bank grew its loans and advances by 37.4 per cent to GH¢618.13 million in the first quarter of this year. Loans and advances were GH¢ 449.87 million in the same period last year but increased on the back of more support extended to businesses and the economy in the first quarter of this year.

While deposits from customers also more than doubled from GH¢1.78 billion in the first quarter of last year to GH¢3.53 billion in the same quarter this year, deposits with banks and other financial institutions rose from about GH¢84.66 million to GH¢242.97 million within the same period.

The bank’s shareholders funds as at March 31, 2023 stood at GH¢417 million (above the regulatory minimum of GH¢400 million), a growth of 10% from the same period last year, despite the negative impact of Ghana’s Domestic Debt Exchange Program.

Return on equity (ROE) also ended the quarter at an impressive 50 per cent and while return on assets (ROA) was 5 per cent in the period under review.

Implications

The Managing Director of OmniBSIC, Daniel Asiedu, said the results indicated that the bank generally improved its financial soundness indicators over the period, in terms of asset quality, liquidity, and capital adequacy ratio.
Mr Asiedu said the balance sheet remained strong because of the buoyant growth in investments and increased support to businesses and the economy through loans and advances.

Banking application

A wholly indigenous bank, OmniBSIC was launched in 2019 as the outcome of a merger between two strong brands meant to consolidate their operations and serve customers better.

It faced turbulence in its first years until late 2021 when the ingenuity of the current board, management, and staff started paying off.

The MD said the bank was not resting on its laurels but was pushing further with innovations and products to help meet the growing needs of customers.

The astute banker, who is also a Reverend Minister and the Chairman of the International Presbytery of Fountain Gate Chapel (FGC), said the bank recently upgraded its banking software to the latest version of FLEXCUBE, a universal banking software used by the world’s big lenders, to ensure efficient service delivery.

The former MD of Zenith Bank Ghana and the Agricultural Development Bank said the upgrade had made OmniBSIC’s operations smoother, noting that further major milestones should be expected in the coming financial year.

Koa Launches Its First Cocoa Fruit Juice In Ghana |

0

Koa introduces its first cocoa fruit juice to the West African market through its gateway Ghana.

The product, called “Koa Natural”, is an all-natural juice produced from the white, fleshy part that surrounds the cocoa bean. The fresh juice is gently processed, with no added sugars, sweeteners or additives, to preserve the authentic natural sweet taste of the cocoa fruit.

The newest addition to the Ghanaian market provides a fresh taste from cocoa and naturally contains potassium and magnesium.

These minerals have health benefits such as regulating the heartbeat, ensuring proper function of the muscles and nerves, and are vital for synthesising protein and metabolising carbohydrates.

A drink that creates an impact in Ghana’s cocoa regions

As Koa Natural is produced from previously unused cocoa fruit pulp, the juice processing provides an extra income to Ghana’s cocoa farmers due to the additional product created from the cocoa pod.

At the same time, Koa’s processing facility creates local jobs in Ghana’s cocoa-growing regions, contributing to the economy and responsible growth in cocoa communities.

Koa Natural is now available for sale in Ghana. To buy Koa Natural visit our Accra office or contact us to arrange delivery.

NDC will push the elephant back into the bush -Ernest Henry Norgbey

0

Incumbent Parliamentary Ashaiman MP Ernest Henry Norgbey has charged party faithful to brace themselves for the task ahead which will see New Patriotic Party (NPP) back into opposition.

He said NPP symbolised by the elephant must be kicked out of power in the 2024 elections having performed abysmally since assuming office in 2017.

Although NPP would be seeking to break the eight-year jinx in the 4th Republic, he believes it is only through hard work that the NDC could thwart this attempt.

Ernest Norgbey disclosed this to Joy News as he delivered his victory speech having been elected to contest on the ticket of NDC in the 2024 parliamentary election.

“What is ahead of us is bigger than what is what we are seeing today. What is ahead of us is to fight the common enemy, be it Dr Bawumia or Alan Kyerematen at the end of 2024”

“And so we have to work together as one family. To make sure we push the elephant back to the bush”

He admits wrestling power from the current administration would be a herculean task but uniting as a common force under the umbrella which represents the NDC can make this achievable.

NDC will push the elephant back into the bush -Ernest Henry Norgbey

“I want to thank everybody. I thank my competitors for giving me a good run for my money. Despite today being a bad one for my competitors, I want to extend my olive branch to them so they come on board as we work towards victory in 2024.”

According to the MP who will be seeking his third term, being given the nod only goes to show the trust the consistency has in him.

“With the confidence reposed in me, I want to say that I’ll continue my good work and make sure I care for the people and bring developmental projects to Ashaiman”

Ernest Norgbey came up against the immediate past chair for the party in the constituency, Tony Afenyo who was seeking to become the parliamentary candidate having failed four previous attempts.

The other competitor is lawyer David Worwui-Brown.

The exercise recorded 11 rejected ballots, 2898 total valid votes, and 2909 total votes cast.

“Supporting SMEs Is The Heartbeat Of Our Business” |

0

Ghana and Africa’s ability to put its people, especially the youth, to work and to create an inclusive, progressive economy, depends significantly on the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

This is a known fact. But how to fuel the sustainable growth of SMEs is the running task that various stakeholders have been working at over the years.

·      Yes, 10%.

·      Collateral-free loans up to GHS1,000,000.

Our partnership with the Mastercard Foundation has also made GHS2.5million available to fund early-stage SMEs/Agritech and Fintech startups. These are all part of a concerted effort to elevate our commitment to the key sectors that are critical to Ghana’s economic growth.

I strongly believe that our SME banking proposition is the most compelling and comprehensive in Ghana today. We are ready and eager to support SMEs across the country as they work to grow their businesses, create jobs, and drive the economic development of our nation. To all SMEs, I say call on us. We are here and we are ready to help.

Zambian Refugee Commission Pays Courtesy Call On NIA |

0

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has hosted a delegation from the Zambia Refugee Commission to learn about the NIA’s refugee registration process.

During the meeting, the Executive Secretary of NIA, Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah expressed NIA’s commitment to providing the necessary information to help the Zambian delegation improve the well-being of refugees in their country.

He explained that refugee registration in Ghana is under the purview of the Ghana Refugee Board and the NIA. He highlighted that the Zambian delegation’s visit aimed to learn about how Ghana registers refugees improves their economic activities, modernizes settlements, harmonizes documentation, and removes barriers that hinder their mobility and enjoyment of life.

Prof. Attafuah discussed the establishment and mandate of the NIA and how identity issues have been at the heart of many political crises in Ghana. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the integrity of the electoral process and stated that the NIA has so far registered 17.37 million people out of a population of 19 million, with 16.7 million Ghanaians receiving their cards.

He also mentioned that the NIA plans to register Ghanaian children between ages 15 and 18 and those between ages 6 and 14, with the latter exercise starting on June 1, 2023. Additionally, he talked about the registration of Ghanaians abroad and foreigners in Ghana.

Prof. Prosper Ng’andu, the UN High Commissioner of Refugees in Zambia who led the delegation stressed that policymakers and practitioners need to stop referring to refugees as a “burden” and start seeing them as an opportunity. He noted that with suitable investment and wise policies, welcoming refugees can yield substantial economic dividends.

According to Prof. Ng’andu, the Zambian government sees refugees are a viable resource that can be managed to contribute to the country’s economy. He discussed the need to digitize refugees and bring them under one platform, as Ghana is doing with the Ghana Card, to manage them properly and provide support.

GIADEC Will Ensure Value-Addition To Bauxite To Prevent Raw Exports – President Akufo-Addo |

0

President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), has strategically been established by government to add value to the country’s raw bauxite resources in order to phase out the raw export of the natural resource in the short to medium term.

He made the assertion when he addressed participants of a two-day Natural Resource Stakeholders’ Dialogue at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel on Thursday 11 May 2023 under the theme: Harnessing our Natural Resources Responsibly for our Sustainable Collective Good.

The dialogue, which was organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources in collaboration with Graphic Communications Group Limited, is aimed at generating stakeholder discussions on policy suggestions that can be implemented to arrest the phenomenon of illegal mining and logging.

Mining negotiation

According to President Akufo-Addo, Ghana, over the years, “has not always done well in negotiations with the countries that exploit her natural resources” and that among other things such as “corruption, incompetence and political instability, the nation has mostly been short-sighted in these negotiations, thus, end up settling for less”.

Worse still, he observed, “The country has until recently, failed to put in place the requisite framework which will enable us to establish highest ends of the value chains of the extractive industry.

“Extensive tax and royalties’ exemptions, intolerable labour practices, and lack of value addition in the country has resulted in exceptional profits to mining companies at the expense of our communities, towns, cities and country. We cannot repeat these mistakes.

“While it is fully understood that mining companies must make profit from their businesses, it is important that this is not done at the expense of lands and the peoples that provide these resources,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“For several years, the extractive sector has been the largest tax base of our country apart from providing thousands of employment to several young men and women. The truth, however, is that over the years, we have not benefited optimally from these resources due to our overdependence on the export of raw products,” he added.

Value addition

To this end, President Akufo-Addo noted, “There is no gainsaying the fact that the real value of natural resources lies in their value addition.” He further emphasized, “The value of the global aluminium industry, for example, from bauxite mining through alumina smelting and alumina production, is estimated to be in excess of one hundred and eighty billion United States dollars annually.

“But raw bauxite accounts for only 7.6% of this market, while the remaining 92.3 % is generated from processed bauxite. This case is not different from those of gold, iron ore, manganese, cobalt, or lithium. Indeed, currently, African countries involved in the production of lithium are set to be making just about 10% of the entire value chain of the electric battery industry.

“This is why government has prioritised local content and local participation as well as value addition in the natural resources sector to ensure that we derive optimal benefits from these God-given resources,” President Akufo-Addo pointed out.

“Through the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), established in 2018, we are working to ensure value-addition in our bauxite resources through refining, smelting, aluminium production, as well as production of other downstream aluminium products.

“The implementation of the 4-project agenda [of GIADEC] is expected to optimise production in the upstream industry and spur production and job creation in the downstream sector,” Akufo-Addo further remarked.

Predicted transition

Making further emphasis on his assertion about the potential of GIADEC, President Akufo-Addo indicated, “With an estimated bauxite resource base of over 900 million metric tonnes, this sector can serve as an anchor for the country’s industrialization if we continue to pursue value-added policies.

“By section 28 of the GIADEC law, and section 30 of the GISDEC law, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources is empowered to make regulations to ensure that no bauxite or iron ore in their raw state is exported out of the country after five years of the coming into force of these laws.

“With the policies and measures we are putting in place, we intend to invoke these provisions of our law and soon, bauxite and iron ore will no longer be exported in their raw state from the country. We will ensure that the highest level of these minerals is maintained in our country,” Akufo-Addo said.

GIADEC

The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), commenced operations in 2019, and the corporation is working to ensure value addition across the full value chain of aluminium production.

GIADEC is driving the development of mining, refining to produce alumina, and smelting to produce primary aluminium, and ultimately, to develop a downstream aluminium industry in Ghana.

GIADEC has made significant progress in the development of the four projects, which, together, define Ghana’s Integrated Aluminium Development programme. The projects were officially launched in September 2021 by President Akufo-Addo.

First Tranche of IMF Cash To Hit BoG Account This Week | Economy

0

The first tranche of International Monetary Fund (IMF) cash to support the country’s balance of payment is expected to hit the Bank of Ghana’s account this week.
The IMF Board will approve the “cash disbursement” as soon as it considers a request for Ghana’s Programme this Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

Part of the first tranche will come in by Friday March 19, 2023, while the remaining should be disbursed by June 2023.

Details of disbursement

The transfers, Joy Business, understands would be done in two instalments; the first one coming in by Friday May 19, 2023 or Monday, May 22, 2023.  Another disbursement is expected to be done in June 2023. This will be followed by a visit by an IMF Mission to Ghana in June 2023 to review Ghana’s programme considerations.

Another review is expected just before the end of 2023, possibly in December 2023, before the final disbursement.  All the funds will be paid directly into the Bank of Ghana’s account to support Ghana’s balance of payments needs. Ghana is expected to get about $3 billion spread over a period of three years under the IMF programme.

Ghana’s IMF Progrmme

Ghana secured the required financing assurance from Ghana’s Creditors Committee under the G20 Common Framework last week, which includes China. This came after the Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, indicated that Ghana will secure the financing assurance under the G20 Common Framework. She noted that the decision would help Ghana to unlock the much-needed financing from Ghana’s development partners. “I also strongly endorse the call by the Official Creditor Committee for private creditors and other official bilateral creditors to commit to comparable debt treatments,” the IMF boss added.

South Africa will not take sides in contest between global powers, says President Cyril Ramaphosa

0

President Cyril Ramaphosa has been under immense pressure to make his loyalties known in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, South Africa has always declared neutrality in the war.

Following even more serious allegations that South Africa provided arms to Russia – allegations that even had the White House National Security Council speak out about – Ramaphosa used his weekly newsletter again to make known South Africa’s neutrality.

The President said that since the advent of democracy nearly 30 years, South Africa has pursued an independent foreign policy.

“With the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, however, there has been extraordinary pressure on the country to abandon its non-aligned position and take sides in what is, in effect, a contest between Russia and the West,” Ramaphosa said.

“Other countries on the African continent and elsewhere have been put under similar pressure.”

One of the most impressive features of the international anti-apartheid movement, according to Ramaphosa, was that it drew support from countries and citizens from across continental and ideological divides.

The struggle to end apartheid was taken up in capitals from Africa to Europe, from the Americas to Asia, with South African leaders working hard to gain the support of governments, lawmakers and citizens across the divisions of the Cold War.

That experience of reaching out across political divides and building relations with very different countries has helped to shape South Africa’s foreign policy.

“This has been coupled with a firm belief in the value of an inclusive multilateral world order and the peaceful resolution of conflict through dialogue,” he said.

“This explains South Africa’s membership of the Non-Aligned Movement, a forum of 120 countries that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. South Africa has also used its membership of other international forums like the G20 and BRICS group to advance the views and interests of countries in Africa and the rest of the Global South.”

Ramaphosa said that throughout, the country has been firm on this point: “South Africa has not been, and will not be, drawn into a contest between global powers.”

But, he clarified.

Ramaphosa said that does not mean that we do not have a position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“Consistent with our stance on conflicts in other parts of the world, South Africa’s view is that the international community needs to work together to urgently achieve a cessation of hostilities and to prevent further loss of life and displacement of civilians in Ukraine,” Ramaphosa said.

He said that it needed to support “meaningful dialogue towards a lasting peace”, which would ensure the security and stability of all nations.

“As a country, we are committed to the articles of the United Nations Charter, including the principle that all members shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means. We support the principle that members should refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of other states,” Ramaphosa said.

“Our position seeks to contribute to the creation of conditions that make the achievement of a durable resolution of the conflict possible. The reality is that the Russia-Ukraine conflict – and the tensions that underlie it – will not be resolved through military means. It needs to be resolved politically.”

He further said he does not accept that our non-aligned position favours Russia above other countries. Nor does he accept that it should imperil our relations with other countries.

On his foreign visits last year, where he travelled to Washington to meet US President Joe Biden and to London to meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Ramaphosa reiterated that in his talks with both leaders, he restated our non-aligned position and explained that South Africa believes that this conflict should be resolved through dialogue.

In August, Ramaphosa will be hosting the leaders of Brazil, India, China and Russia for the summit of the BRICS countries. South Africa has strong and enduring relations with all these countries.

In all his interactions with these countries, Ramaphosa said the United Nations remained the only viable mechanism through which the global community could strive for peace and common development.

“Yet, the conflict in Ukraine has highlighted the weaknesses in the structure and practices of the United Nations. The composition of the UN Security Council, in particular, does not reflect the realities of the current global landscape. It needs to be overhauled so that there is equitable representation and a more inclusive mechanism for resolving international disputes,” he said.

Following the allegations that South Africa loaded weapons onto a Russian vessel last year, Ramaphosa is establishing an independent inquiry headed by a retired judge to establish the facts.

“We are determined, in both word and action, to maintain our position on the peaceful resolution of conflict. Guided by the lessons of our history, we will continue to resist calls, from whatever quarter, to abandon our independent and non-aligned foreign policy,” he concluded in his newsletter.

The action of the Immigration Officer angered the ‘mad’ man and walked violently towards AICOII Nuredeen Abdul Ganiew with the pestle.

But upon sensing danger, according to the onlookers, the Immigration Officer fired a warning shot but it did not scare the ‘mad’ man and kept moving towards the Immigration Officer trying to use the pestle to hit him.

But the Immigration Officer with his experience and proffesionalism exhibited was extremely cautious because of the onlookers and the crowd and managed to run backwards whiles the angry ‘mad’ man runs towards him, then managed to move him away from the crowd and shot his right thigh and was apprehended.

The noise from the onlookers attracted more crowd and a number of people including police officers to the scene who assisted to arrest the attacker.

Some onlookers described the incident as a typical action movie.

The items retrieveed from the attacker includes a sharp knife he used to stab the two people, a locally manufactured catapult and the Pestle which he used to attack the two Police Officers.

The two Police Officers and the mentally retarded man were taken to the Sefwi Wiawso government Hospital.

A formal report has been made and the Police AK-47 rifle has been handed over to the Sefwi Wiawso District police for further action.

Ghana to get first $600m from IMF after Wednesday

0

The Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam Anta, has confirmed that the first tranche of $600 million will be disbursed immediately after the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approves Ghana’s request for an extended credit facility (ECF).

Confirming to Reuters in a phone interview on Sunday, May 14, the Karaga Member of Parliament (MP) said a second tranche of the same amount will drop by end of year with the rest disbursed in equal tranches of $360 million after semi-annual reviews.

“We expect a deal on Wednesday,” the former Deputy Energy Minister is quoted as saying.

“With the disbursement, there is going to be $600 million as a first tranche just immediately after the approval.”

The first tranche is expected to be received by the country within a week after the Executive Board’s approval.

This development follows the massive support given to Ghana on Friday, May 12 by the Paris Club.

It was at its meeting co-chaired by China in Paris.

“The creditor committee examined the macroeconomic and financial situation of Ghana, including its long-term debt sustainability, and its formal request for a debt treatment under the ‘Common Framework for Debt Treatments beyond the DSSI’ endorsed under the Saudi G20 Presidency in November 2020, which was also endorsed by the Paris Club,” the Paris Club said in a statement on Friday.

“The creditor committee supports Ghana’s envisaged IMF upper credit tranche (UCT) program and its swift adoption by the IMF Executive Board to address Ghana’s urgent financing needs. The creditor committee encourages Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to maximize their support for Ghana to meet its long-term financial needs.”

This brought joy to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who talked highly of the “last hurdle” crossed when he met the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference at the Jubilee House.

“Today is a very special day in the recent history of Ghana. At long last today, we have been informed that the last hurdle towards our agreement with the [International Monetary] Fund has been overcome, which is that the Paris Club met today in Paris with the creditor’s committee co-chaired by China and has okayed and approved Ghana’s request of the IMF.”

Signs That Indicate You Need to Replace Your Laptop’s Battery

0

Laptop batteries are designed to last for a certain number of charge cycles, which can vary depending on the battery’s quality and usage. If you use a laptop regularly, you are likely to notice that the battery life gradually decreases over time. This is a common issue with laptops, and it can be frustrating when your laptop runs out of battery quickly, especially when you are away from a power source. In this article, according to CellPhoneRepair, we will discuss some signs that indicate you may need to replace your laptop battery.

Decreased Battery Life: If you notice that your laptop’s battery life is decreasing, it could be a sign that the battery is wearing out. You may notice that the battery lasts for a shorter amount of time than it used to or that it drains faster than usual. In some cases, the battery may not even last long enough to complete a task that used to be possible on a single charge.

Battery Not Charging: If your laptop battery is not charging at all, it could be due to a faulty battery or charging system. You can try resetting the battery or charging system, but if that doesn’t work, it may be time to replace the battery.

Laptop Shuts Down Unexpectedly: If your laptop shuts down unexpectedly even when there is still charge left in the battery, it could be a sign of a failing battery. This could happen when the battery has reached the end of its life, or when there is a fault in the battery’s circuitry.

Swollen Battery: If your laptop battery has become swollen or is bulging, it could be dangerous to continue using it. A swollen battery can damage the laptop’s internal components and could even cause a fire or explosion. In this case, it is important to replace the battery as soon as possible.

Overheating: If your laptop is overheating or running hot, it could be a sign that the battery is failing. This is because a battery that is nearing the end of its life can generate excess heat, which can cause the laptop to overheat. If your laptop is running hot and you notice other signs of battery wear, it’s time to replace the battery.

Battery Status Error: Some laptops will display a message indicating that the battery needs to be replaced when it is no longer functioning correctly. This could be an error message or warning light, depending on the laptop model.

Age of the Battery: Finally, If your laptop battery is more than two or three years old, it may be time to replace it. Over time, the battery’s capacity will decrease, which means that it will hold less charge and will need to be charged more frequently.

Replacing a laptop battery is typically straightforward and can be done by most users. However, it is important to ensure that you purchase a replacement battery that is compatible with your laptop model and follow proper safety precautions when removing the old battery and installing the new one.

Benefits of Rosemary, an Aromatic Plant that is Good for Health

0

According to healthline – Rosemary plants are commonly used as food spices, aromatherapy oils, and herbal medicines that have health benefits. What are the nutritional , benefits and possible side effects? Check out the full explanation in this article.

Nutritional and nutrients of rosemary

Rosemary is an herbal plant that has the scientific name Rosmarinus officinalis.

It is native to South America and the Mediterranean region, but also grows in other parts of the world. There are various ways to enjoy this distinctively flavoured plant.

From brewing it as a tea, to seasoning dishes, to applying essential oils.

Here are the nutritional and nutrient contents of one tablespoon of rosemary:

Calories: 0.9g

Water: 0.47g

Fibre: 0.10 g

Protein: 0.02 g

Carbohydrate: 0.1 g

Calcium: 2.22 mg

Iron: 0.05 mg

Magnesium: 0.64 mg

Potassium: 4.68 mg

Zinc: 0.01 mg

Vitamin A: 1 mcg

Vitamin C: 0.2 mg

The rosemary plant is beneficial as an antimicrobial and antioxidant. It is packed with phytochemicals to fight diseases and maintain overall health.

The various health benefits of rosemary

Rosemary has been used as a traditional Ayurvedic medicine since ancient times. However, more research is still needed regarding its health benefits.

Here are some of the possible benefits of the rosemary plant that you need to know about:

1. Fights free radicals and inflammation

Rosemary is rich in antioxidant molecules and anti-inflammatory compounds. As such, rosemary is believed to have benefits for protecting the body from disease as well as potentially improving blood circulation.

For information, antioxidant molecules are needed by the body to fight excess free radicals. Excess free radicals are the cause of oxidative stress and disease.

2. Improves memory and concentration

According to research published in Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, the scent of rosemary is beneficial for improving concentration and helping to increase speed, performance and accuracy at work.

3. Maintain brain health

There are also benefits of rosemary tea related to the brain and nervous system. This is due to the presence of carnosic acid to help ward off free radicals in the brain.

In The Therapeutic Potential of Rosemary research conducted on animals, proving that compounds in rosemary tea can maintain health and prevent brain cell death.

Another animal study showed that rosemary can help speed up the recovery of conditions associated with brain damage, such as stroke.

Other studies have shown that rosemary can prevent the negative effects of brain aging and provide protection against Alzheimer’s disease.

4. Stimulates hair growth

One of the most common types of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia. It is commonly known as baldness in men or even women.

To overcome this, you can use rosemary oil which is claimed to be beneficial in helping treat androgenetic alopecia. When applying it on the hair, as many as twice a day for six months, users are likely to experience an increase in hair thickness.

5. Protecting the health of the eyes

A study from the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute revealed that carnosic acid has the potential to maintain eye health. The findings also mentioned the benefits of rosemary to protect the eyes from diseases that affect the part of the retina, such as age-related macular degeneration.

6. Improve digestive health.

Rosemary has been used to help treat digestive disorders on the European continent. In fact, health institutions in Germany have also approved rosemary for the treatment of disorders in the digestive system.

Nevertheless, there are no scientific studies that can really support rosemary’s benefits claims.

7. Potential to fight cancer cells

Another amazing benefit of rosemary is to fight cancer cells. Proved by academic studies, rosemary extract can slow leukaemia (one type of blood cancer) as well as breast carcinoma cells.

Not so far, rosemary also has the potential as an anti-inflammatory and antitumor. Another study in the Journal of Food Science revealed that rosemary extract added to beef can reduce the formation of cancer-causing agents that can develop during the cooking process.

However, more research is needed on the benefits of rosemary in fighting cancer.

Side effects of consuming rosemary that may occur

Most people do not experience any side effects when using rosemary as a spice in cooking. However, you still need to pay attention to the estimate of its use.

Some say that the maximum intake of rosemary plants is about 4 to 6 grams per day.

Although it is safe to consume, you should be careful if it exceeds the safe limit, as it can trigger side effects, such as:

and vomiting

by Kejang

by koma

edema in the lungs

Abortion, not recommended for pregnant women to take rosemary supplements

Not only that, it is important to keep in mind that rosemary tea may also affect the performance of some drug groups. The group of drugs is:

Anticoagulant drugs, blood thinning drugs, such as warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel.

Diuretics to increase urine production, such as hydrocholorothiazide and furosemide.

ACE inhibitors used to lower high blood pressure. These drugs include lisinopril, fosinoprile, captopril, and enalapril.

Lithium, used to treat manic episodes of manic depression. Rosemary can act as a diuretic and cause lithium to reach a toxic point in the body.

Although rosemary is generally a safe plant, there is no harm to consult first if you want to try herbal or traditional medicine. Also, do not use the rosemary plant as a replacement for the primary treatment of the doctor.

Research on the benefits of rosemary plants in humans tends to be limited and more studies are needed to prove its benefits to humans.

Mahama’s campaign team in Greater Accra Region grateful to delegates

0

The Campaign Team of John Mahama in the Greater Accra Region have expressed their gratitude to delegates in the region for voting massively in favour of their candidate.

In a statement, the Chairperson of the team said the positive outcome of the results proves that the “victory shoes of Greater Accra Regional NDC are like iron and brass.”

Mr Mahama once again won the votes of NDC delegates to lead the party into the 2024 presidential election.

Certified results by the Electoral Commission (EC) show Mr Mahama polled an overwhelming 297,603 votes representing 98.9% of the total valid votes cast at the end of the NDC primaries on Saturday.

His closest contender, the former Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu, polled a paltry 3,181  representing 1.1%.

Full statement below:

Deuteronomy 33:25, And thy shoes shall be like Iron and brass and as the days go, so shall their strength be.

The quest to take John Mahama back to the Flagstaff House to finish his works has been a major focus for the NDC over the years.

4 years ago, John Mahama chalked 93.75% to be Flagbearer with Greater Accra Regional NDC recording 88.7% for John Mahama and took the 8th position out of 10 regions.

This time, under the indefatigable leadership of Chairman Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore of the Greater Accra Regional NDC who doubles as the Campaign Manager for John Mahama in Greater Accra Region, there has been a skyrocket of votes for John Mahama from 88.7% to 99.54%. How marvellous!!

On top of it all, amid the 16 regions, Greater Accra Regional NDC takes the 1st position and hits the highest percentage of votes for John Mahama to be NDC’s Flagbearer. Such a leapfrog!!

Mahama's campaign team in Greater Accra Region grateful to delegates

This is a masterly feat and it deserves a massive applause. Despite the snares set ahead of the Greater Accra Regional John Mahama Campaign Team, they still managed to achieve the target set for themselves.

Surely, the victory shoes of Greater Accra NDC under the auspices of Chairman Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore are like Iron and brass and as the National Campaign begins, so shall their strength be.

It is time to join the boat and cruise to victory 2024. No one shall be left behind.

We need power and that is all that matters.

A Prof Accused Me Of Not Being Qualified To Study Medicine Just Because Am From The North – Prof Idris Mohammed

0

A Nigerian professor and physician named Idris Mohammed gave an interview to the press. Professor Idris Mohammed opened up to the press about his life, his experience applying to medical school and being accepted at the University of Ibadan.

Prof. Mohammed said that when he was accepted to the University of Ibadan in 1964, he left the Northern party of Nigeria for the first time in his life and found things to be quite weird. There were only two universities in Nigeria at the time that offered medical programs, so he stated he had to choose between the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos.

Both schools welcomed me with open arms, but ultimately I decided to enroll at the University of Ibadan. The most upsetting experience I’ve had at university was when a lecturer told me and other northern students that we weren’t smart enough to study medicine. The moment such comments were made, I felt uneasy.

Professor Idris Mohammed, originally from Gombe state, remarked that his experience in the Southwest was painful because he had never been anywhere else in Nigeria. He made it through his term at the University of Ibadan without ever having traveled outside of southern Nigeria before.

IMF likely to approve first $600m tranche for Ghana by Wednesday

0

Ghana expects the International Monetary Fund to approve a first loan tranche of $600 million as soon as Wednesday, paving the way for disbursement within a week, Minister of State in the Finance Ministry Mohammed Amin Adam told Reuters on Sunday.

Ghana is seeking $3 billion from the Fund to shore up its battered economy. On Friday, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said Ghana’s official creditors had provided the necessary financing assurances for the IMF Executive Board to look at signing off on the loan.

“We expect a deal on Wednesday. With the disbursement, there is going to be $600 million as a first tranche just immediately after the approval,” Adam said by phone, adding that Ghana hoped to receive the funds within a week of the board’s decision.

He said a second tranche of $600 million is expected to be approved after a successful first review of the programme, sometime in November or December, with the rest disbursed in equal tranches of $360 million after semi-annual reviews.

The funds will boost Ghana’s coffers and help it work towards the target of foreign reserves amounting to the equivalent of three months of imports by 2026, he said.

Like some other smaller, riskier emerging markets including Sri Lanka and Zambia, Ghana faces a debt overhaul after its already strained finances buckled under the economic fallout from COVID-19 and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Some $5.4 billion of debt to official creditors has been earmarked for restructuring, according to government data, as well as $14.6 billion of debt to private overseas creditors.

Adam said he expected negotiations with both sets of creditors to go well once the IMF signs off on the loan.

“Confidence is going to be restored and we expect that stakeholders will cooperate and will be encouraged to negotiate favourable terms with us,” he said, adding that the date for talks had not yet been set for either group.

Ghana has also turned to the World Bank as it fights to restore macroeconomic stability and end its worst economic crisis in a generation that has fuelled protests over the soaring cost of living.

Adam said the government was far along in talks with the World Bank to provide additional support of $900 million to be disbursed in three equal instalments of $300 million over three years.

“We are far advanced, almost concluding negotiations,” he said.

The World Bank has also agreed to support a financial sector stability fund with $250 million to help Ghana address the insolvency and liquidity challenges following a domestic debt exchange programme, which has affected some domestic banks.

Adam said the government was also in talks with the African Development Bank for over $100 million for the stability fund.

court case Doesn’t go in Obi’s favour, he has already made a statement in politics-Gbolahan Olojede

0

Political analyst Gbolahan Olojede recently responded to comments made by Peter Gregory Obi, the flag bearer for Nigeria’s Labour Party. During a speech in Abuja, Obi stated his belief that he will become president of Nigeria in the future, which sparked criticism from some who saw it as a sign of desperation. However, Olojede disagreed with this interpretation, saying that Obi’s political career has shown he has reason to be optimistic.

Olojede argued that even if Obi’s ongoing case at the Election Tribunal does not go in his favor, he has still made a strong political statement and built a significant following that could be useful in future electoral contests. He cited Obi’s past successes, such as becoming governor of Anambra through the court and being reinstated after impeachment, as evidence of his resilience in the face of challenges.

Olojede acknowledged that Obi’s statement could be seen as overly ambitious, but he believes that Obi’s track record shows that he has reason to be optimistic about his chances of becoming president one day. He also suggested that Obi’s popularity and base of supporters could be leveraged in future contests.

Mubarick fails to derail Muntaka’s sixth-term bid

0

Masawudu Mubarick, the sole contender of Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase, in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries failed to derail the sixth term bid of the incumbent.

The Former Minority Chief Whip won the contest with over 300 votes in what many believed was going to be a close contest prior to the election.

He polled 1,064 votes to secure the slot to represent the NDC in the Asawase Constituency in 2024 at the expense of Masawudu who garnered 734 votes.

It was an election full of acrimony between the two camps which generated a lot of tension in the constituency ahead of the primaries.

While the supporters of Masawudu argued that it was time for Muntaka to give way for fresh ideas after serving five terms, followers of Muntaka believed there was no need to change a winning team.

They also pointed out that the wealth of experience accumulated in parliament over the years by Muntaka could only bring them development, especially when the NDC return to power in 2025.

Having been one of the safest seat for the NDC in the stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), there is the widely held notion that once a candidate clears the primaries hurdle he or she stands a brighter chance of going to parliament.

The stakes were, therefore, high as both candidates left no stone unturned in their quest to represent the party for the next general election.

Their determination to emerge victorious on the day could clearly be seen at the voting centre as their supporters ceased every opportunity to show their loyalty to their respective candidates.

Despite heavy security presence, several skirmishes between the opposing supporters were recorded intermittently as voting took place at the Kumasi Central Mosque.

The arrival of the two candidates turned the venue into a rally ground as their supporters welcomed them with wild jubilation.

One could feel the tensed atmosphere as closing of polls approached with both set of supporters brimming with confidence in anticipation of massive victory.

It was the camp of Muntaka that had the last laugh when they picked signals of a victory for Muntaka from the two polling stations as they sang victory songs to the displeasure of their opponents.

An ecstatic Muntaka joined the large crowd to celebrate the hard fought victory after he was officially declared winner of the contest.

He called for a united front as one family to save Ghanaians from the economic crisis that the NPP government had plunged the nation into.

Kwabena Duffour Will Form a New Political Party

0

Dr. Kwabena Duffour may have earned the tag as once a presidential aspirant of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), but the narrative would not be one of the routine aspirants who contested and lost the presidential nomination of the main opposition party; his, would be a bizarre twist of last minute pull out which action, has given rise to many conjectural interpretations.

So, why did Dr. Duffour pull out of the NDC presidential primary just on the nick of the contest? Is it that he believed the selection process was that flawed? That he doesn’t want to be a part of the flawed process? Could that be interpreted as quitting to maintain his integrity and sanctity in the eyes of Ghanaians? Or is it that all along, Dr. Duffuor had another motive beyond just his attempt to win the NDC presidential ticket?

Could it be that he only used the NDC political machinery to enhance his political personality in order to build his own credible political movement? And once that’s achieved, a new political party founded by Dr. Duffour would just be a matter of time? From another standpoint, is it that Dr. Duffour felt he has built the requisite robust political clout using the NDC platform; and now feels he has garnered enough visibility for his presidential run to compete evenly with any presidential candidates that may emerge in the 2024 general elections?

The decision by Dr. Kwabena Duffour to resign from the NDC presidential race has thrown out many questions, not excluding those that have been stated. Even before his bombshell just at the nick of the NDC presidential and parliamentary elections, many watchers of the Duffour political drama had warned that no one should pass the plot by the Kwabena Duffour team to disrupt the NDC primaries for a joke. That is, notwithstanding the decision by Dr. Duffuor to allow for the NDC primaries to go ahead, before his last minute pull out.

There is more to it. Earlier, Dr. Duffour through his lawyer, Kofi Kukubor announced that his client has withdrawn the interlocutory injunction filed by the presidential aspirant against the NDC’s primaries scheduled for Saturday, May 13th, 2023. NDC General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey in his reaction noted that the party was satisfied with the Duffour decision thus: “It confirms the long held position that there was no case to begin with. The delegates’ list is the main primary document that we are depending on, and all along, the list has been ready, and made available to all the contestants.”

This writer can state on authority that the earlier Duffour decision not to stand in the way of the NDC congress, was not to offer any relief to the NDC and its largest benefactor, John Dramani Mahama. It was the execution in part, of a grandiose plot cloaked in a façade of accusation that there are subtle moves by the combined forces of Mahama and the NDC executives to force Duffour out of the NDC. And so, if Duffour decides to form his own party to contest the 2024 elections, none without an insight into his agenda would fault him?

There is no sense of welcome and belonging in the NDC, Duffour and his backers would want the world to believe. The well-crafted melodrama can be traced to a special Action Plan adopted by Team Duffour at Aburi in the Eastern Region on April 23rd, 2023. Aburi is a famed setting for such political strategies, plots and resolutions. Even foreign countries or governments have benefited from Aburi’s political attractiveness. At the height of Nigeria’s civil war, Aburi hosted most of the warring factions in the conflict where some degree of consensus was reached in the Biafra civil war which fall-out, till today, Nigeria is yet to recover from.

That meeting was chaired by General Ankrah, then Ghana’s Head of State after the overthrow of Dr. Nkrumah in 1966. The plan by Team Duffour to place injunction on the NDC congress and subsequent decision by Dr. Duffour to quit the NDC were the main objects of the Aburi meeting. It was also suggested at the meeting that exploratory mechanism be put in place to assess the possibility of Duffour ceding off from the NDC to form a political movement to test his popularity. That was the consensus reached by Dr. Duffour and other NDC chieftains who support the Duffour cause. Party chiefs at the meeting included former party chairman, Dr. Obed Yao Asamoah; Enoch Tei Mensah, a former minister of youth and sports; Yaw Boateng Gyan, a former national organizer of the NPP and former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Kamara. Others were Dr. Ekwow Spio Gabrah, Rojo Mettle Nunoo, Fritz Baffoe among others. The concluding part of the Aburi accord was the resolution that Team Duffour break away from the NDC to form their own political party, this reporter can state on authority. They knew beating Mahama was an impossibility.

A member of the Communication Team of Duffour, Fritz Baffoe confirmed to this author that “definitely, Dr. Duffour will form a new political party.” And so, there was this artificially-induced conspiracy just to confirm their insistence that Mahama and the national executives of the NDC have created bunkers that would not allow anyone the chance of getting to know the nuisances in the party’s internal electoral process, let alone contesting on an even keel with the choice of the NDC establishment, John Dramani Mahama.

But the larger question remains: Will the actions of Dr. Duffour and his likes, not rather play into the hands of the NPP which is so eager “To Break the 8”? Rather shockingly, the consensus reached on this particular subject was that Team Duffour will better be served under an NPP administration than a John Mahama presidency. A member at the meeting who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that in an unlikely event Mahama wins the general elections, they will galvanize and re-group all aggrieved NDC members under one umbrella to restore the soul of the NDC.

When Dr. Obed Asamoah’s attention was drawn to the fact that when he and others broke away to form a rival party, it only helped the NPP to win the 2008 elections, the former Attorney General quickly retorted: “If we were not that significant, why did the NDC come begging us to return to the fold of the NDC? That should tell you how our action affected the fortune and the chances of the NDC in that year’s elections.” What is beating the minds of many observers is how someone like Baba Kamara would be a member of the Duffour team.

Baba Kamara was the National Security Coordinator under President Mills’ administration and also Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria in Mahama’s government. Reliable sources in the Duffour camp have hinted this author that Baba Kamara is penciled to be the running mate of Dr. Duffour, in event the former Governor won the NDC presidential nomination, but now that the way is cleared for Duffour to run his own political party, it’s crystal clear Baba’s dream is about to be realized.

In a press statement on Sunday, it said, “A dedicated legal team is currently scrutinising her [Juliana Kinang-Wassan] conduct in the video to establish whether there are elements of an election-related crime to warrant Police intervention or otherwise.”

Supporters of the National Democratic Congress attending the party’s primaries at Ejura Sekyedumase were excited after one of the aspirants showered money on them at the voting grounds on Saturday.

Juliana Kinang Wassan was shown in a viral video standing in a car showering cash on the people who flung her at the Ahmadiya School Park where voting was ongoing.

According to JoyNews correspondent Nana Boakye Yiadom, there was a mad rush for the money which ranges from GH¢10 notes to GH¢100 notes.

“He Has Evidence” – Falana To Defend Seun Kuti Over Assault On Police Officer

0

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has revealed that Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, will report to the police on Monday, following the arrest warrant issued by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba.

This comes after speculations that a team of police stormed Seun’s home at Allen Avenue on Sunday, but met his absence.

Speaking with The Punch on Sunday, Falana said the embattled singer sought his legal services following the assault on a police officer.

He also confirmed that the singer has enough evidence to defend himself and it was not the first time he is dealing with the police.

He said, “I am his lawyer and he has briefed me. He certainly has evidence. This is not the first time he is dealing with the police.

“He is going to report himself to the police tomorrow morning. There is no problem at all.”

Recall that a viral video had shown the moment Kuti confronted the policeman after which he pushed and slapped him.

After the video of the assault went viral, Kuti took to his Instagram story to explain that the officer tried to “kill” him and his family.

The Inspector General of Police subsequently ordered the immediate arrest of the singer.

Akali Baba also ordered a speedy and full investigation into the cause of the assault and prosecution of Seun Kuti.

NDC primaries: Edem Agbana insists he won Ketu North elections

0

Former National Democracy Congress’ Deputy National Youth Organiser has insisted that he won the party’s parliamentary primaries held in Ketu North.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe, Eric Edem Agbana said that despite the opposition to his victory, he won the Saturday elections with 360 votes while his biggest contender had 359.

He explained that following the initial counting, a recount was done twice on the request of his opponents but the votes remained the same.

“After that my agent signed the pink sheet which recorded the 360 votes, only for a challenge to be brought up about the validity of the ballot papers.”

“So they decided to check whether or not all the ballots were properly stamped. And according to EC officials after that check, two of the ballot papers recorded in my favour did not have the stamp,” Mr Agbana told the host Blessed Sogah.

He noted that a further check of these ballot papers’ serial numbers proved that they were legitimate papers issued from the Electoral Commission’s booklet.

“It means that if these papers were without a stamp, it was as a result of either recklessness on the part of an EC official, or a deliberate attempt of an EC official to mar the process.”

“How do you punish a candidate or the voter for an abysmal job done by an EC official? There is a winner in Ketu North and the winner is Edem Agbana.”

On Saturday, the NDC delegates in Ketu North had to choose between eight candidates who to vote for to represent them in the 2024 general election.

After an initial count of the votes cast, Edem Agbana and his team began celebrating after beating his opponent with one vote.

However, shortly after his win was called into question with the opposition demanding a run off.

But, Mr Agbana said he will not sit quietly while his win is being undermined.

“How do I go into a rerun when I have won the elections? There is a clear winner and the winner is Edem Agbana. I will not allow anyone to steal.”

He added that “if there was a tie and a need for a rerun of the elections and it is legitimate, I would gladly submit myself to the same.”

“But when everyone can confirm that I am victorious, how do you want me to submit myself to a process and say I am trying to prove a point that I am not scared?”

Mr Agbana said giving into calls for a rerun could only mean that as a parliamentary candidate he will not be able to protect the mandate the people have given him.

Meanwhile, NDC is yet to officially resolve the issue.

People dey amazed tell I senior Peter, he purportedly said in a recent statement. Since humans inherit many advantageous genes, we live long, healthy lives and don’t age quickly. It is not your day, my folks. I enjoyed Peter’s visit yesterday, and I’m sorry to see the old man go. I’m also older than Tinubu. Simply ask around. I don’t look old since I haven’t succeeded in my goal yet.

0

If you’re avoiding dairy milk, it’s important to find alternative sources of calcium and other nutrients that your body needs. Here are three non-dairy milk options that can help you meet your nutritional needs, according to Healthline.

Soy milk is a popular dairy milk alternative that’s high in protein, calcium, and vitamin D. It’s also a good source of iron, magnesium, and phosphorus. Soy milk is often fortified with additional nutrients, so be sure to check the label to make sure you’re getting the nutrients you need.

Almond milk is a low-calorie, dairy-free milk alternative that’s rich in vitamin E and can be a good source of calcium if it’s fortified. It’s also a good source of healthy fats and can be a good option for people who are trying to reduce their saturated fat intake.

Oat milk is a creamy, dairy-free milk alternative that’s high in fiber and can be a good source of calcium if it’s fortified. It’s also a good source of vitamin D and iron. Oat milk is often a good option for people with nut or soy allergies.

When choosing a non-dairy milk, it’s important to look for options that are fortified with calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients that you would normally get from dairy milk. You may also want to consider talking to a healthcare provider or registered dietitian to ensure that you’re meeting your nutritional needs.

According to the release, in the spirit of togetherness and love for both the constituency and the NDC, Kojo Jones, as he is popularly known, congratulated the retained MP as NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 elections.

“Team Jones-Mensah congratulates Hon Gakpey on this feat and other contenders who showed spirited fight and determination, especially, Enyonam Apetorgbor for showing commitment to providing solutions to problems and championing the women’s empowerment agenda. The delegates have decided and we must respect this outcome of democracy,” parts of the statement read.

The team indicated that the post of parliamentary candidate of the NDC and for that matter leader of Keta is very demanding and as such requires somebody with a demonstrable record of achievement, personal development and capacity.

”We want to state that the record of Dr Jones-Mensah in Keta Constituency is rock solid as to effecting real change in the lives of the citizenry. The construction of the Hatorgodo-Lawoshime Bridge, the water plant at Anyako Kpota, the reshaping of roads in Havedzi and Abutiakope, and the extension of water to Horvi, Dzelukope and Tettevikope signal a momentous epoch in Keta.”

“These are unprecedented projects. Making meaningful impacts in the lives of farmers and fishermen with inputs such as fertilizer, weedicides, Knapsack sprayer, fishing nets and training workshops are record-breaking interventions.”

Kojo Jones’ team noted that he is committed to the completion of the Hatorgodo-Lawoshime Bridge which he views as a service to humanity.

“What is important is that Dr Jones-Mensah is ‘at home and enjoying the very best of it.’ Activities of KJM Foundation, the charity wing of the Empire Domus Group continue unabated in service to humanity, God and country,” they stated.

They noted that it is the strongest contention of Team Jones-Mensah that posterity will be the best judge as to whether they delivered on concrete projects to solve teething local problems.

The team added that developments tackled in Keta by Dr Jones-Mensah will make the local 2024 campaign against the NPP easy as they will qualify as NDC legacy projects.

“We are elated that our contributions will count in rescuing power from the NPP and I want to take this opportunity to thank you all team members, supporters and everyone for the dedication and contribution to the project of building Keta.”

“I want to take this opportunity to thank all team members, loved ones, supporters and sympathizers for their dedication and contribution to this project to build Keta,” Kojo Jones’ team added.

They appealed to the NDC rank and file in Keta to pursue unity and cohesion towards the 2024 battle adding that, Kojo Jones is still on the move in Keta and will be actively contributing to the victory of the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

The team also thanked the 265 delegates who voted for and believed in Kojo Jones.

By Anthony Adongo Apubeo

Bongo (U/E), May 13, GNA – Mr Charles Bawadua, a legal practitioner has ousted Mr Edward Abambire Bawa, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Bongo Constituency in the National Democratic Congress’ primaries held ahead of the 2024 general election.

He polled 535 votes to beat the incumbent who polled 509 votes and Professor Ephraim Nsoh Avea, an Educationist who had 75 votes.

This brought to an end the dream of Mr Bawa who is a member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, returning to Parliament for the third consecutive time in 2024 since 2016.

Meanwhile, in the presidential primaries, Former President John Dramani Mahama polled 1,116 votes to beat his contenders Dr Kwabena Duffour and Mr Kojo Bonsu who were able to secure three and six votes respectively.

The three candidates, Mr Bawa, Mr Bawadua and Professor Avea begun their dreams to become MPs in 2015 when all the three contested in the party’s parliamentary primaries to represent the party in the 2016 elections after the three-time MP Albert Abongo decided not to contest again.

The incumbent, however, emerged victorious in that primary and was subsequently elected MP for the area in the 2016 general election.

Although Mr Bawadua and Professor Avea did not contest in the 2020 primaries, the incumbent beat his main contender Dr Rainer Akumperigya, an educationist and won the general election again that year after beating Mr Peter Ayamga Ayinbisa of the New Patriotic Party, the then sitting District Chief Executive.

He was then hoping to secure an opportunity to represent the people of Bongo in parliament for the third time but has not been booted out.

Mr Bawadua who spoke to the Ghana News Agency after his victory expressed gratitude to the delegates for the confidence reposed in him to lead the party in the 2024 elections and promised not to fail.

“The NDC and the people of Bongo should expect humble, truthful and development-oriented leadership from me and nothing else,” he said.

Meanwhile, the incumbent MP had already via a social media post, congratulated Mr Bawadua and wished him well.
