From L to R: Afenyo-Markin, Dzifa Gomashie and Bernard Ahiafor
During Dzifa Abla Gomashie’s vetting as minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Afenyo-Markin, a ranking member of the Appointments Committee, took the opportunity to ask her questions that delved into her personal life, including her background, social life, and even her place of residence.
Afenyo-Markin focused on a section of Dzifa Gomashie’s CV that listed her current place of residence as Lakeside Estate in Accra, a detail that clicked his interest.
He proceeded to ask if she owned the property, to which Dzifa Gomashie confirmed she did.
He then inquired about the “root of title” for the house; the original owner from whom she acquired the property.
Not stopping there, he further asked if she would be willing to provide the committee’s leadership with the root of title if requested.
At this point, the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, intervened, questioning why Afenyo-Markin was probing so deeply into aspects of the nominee’s personal life, particularly in a manner that seemed more like an investigation.
Bernard Ahiafor said Afenyo-Markin’s line of questioning was akin to being part of the “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) team, a five-member initiative recently appointed by President-elect John Dramani Mahama to lead the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
Afenyo-Markin, who also serves as the Minority Leader in Parliament, responded, stating that the tables had turned at that particular moment and the ruling administration is in the moment experiencing the same scrutiny it is applying to others.
Here’s how things unfolded:
Afenyo-Markin: “You indicated in your CV that you live at Lakeside Estate, Adenta, Accra. *Mentions house number*. Is that your own property?”
Dzifa Gomashie: “Mr. Chairman, it is my own property. Thank you.”
Afenyo-Markin: “From whom did your root of title originate? The person from whom you originally acquired the property?”
Dzifa Gomashie: “I bought it from the Lakeside Company.”
Afenyo-Markin: “So Lakeside acquired the land from the government, as we can see from your lease?”
Dzifa Gomashie: “Mr. Chairman, I do not recall the details. I had a lawyer who facilitated the transaction, and I do not recall the specifics.”
Afenyo-Markin: “If given the opportunity, would you be willing to share the title with the leadership of the committee, so we can understand the root of the title?”
Dzifa Gomashie: “I certainly would, if it is demanded.”
Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor: “Hon. Ranking Member, it’s as if you’re part of ORAL.”
Afenyo-Markin: “A little bit of medication on your tongue, and you see how it is!”
Dzifa Gomashie appeared before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, for her vetting, which will determine her confirmation as the substantive Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
She was nominated for the position on January 16, 2025, in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President.
Having served as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture under the Mahama administration from 2013 to 2017, Dzifa Gomashie is also a two-term Member of Parliament for the Ketu South Constituency, where she has been an advocate for development and community empowerment initiatives.
Dominic Ayine is the Minister of Justice and Attorney General
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has indicated plans by his office to conduct a review of the treason felony charges against Oliver Barker-Vormawor.
Speaking to the media after being sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama on January 22, 2025, Ayine disclosed that the charges brought against Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a social activist and lawyer, by the state could potentially be dropped following a thorough review of the case docket.
The Bolgatanga East MP contended that the alleged treasonous statement attributed to Barker-Vormawor was made in the media, further noting that his office would assess whether the charges against him have been fabricated or were properly substantiated.
“With respect to the charges against Oliver, I will definitely study the docket. The statement he made was one made in the media. The docket has been billed and I will study the docket and based on my own opinion as to whether or not they are trumped-up charges, I may drop the charges,” he said.
He added, “I‘m not going to stand here and assure you that I’m definitely going to drop the charges not having read the docket and come to an opinion as to whether or not the charges were properly laid and should be dropped.”
Background
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the #FixTheCountry convener, was charged with a treason felony after making comments on social media that were deemed a threat of a coup.
On Monday, February 14, 2022, the Ashaiman District Court remanded Mr. Barker-Vormawor into police custody until February 28, 2022.
Barker-Vormawor was arrested on Friday, February 11, 2022, upon his return to the country.
According to a police statement, his arrest was prompted by a comment he made on social media, in which he stated that he would stage a coup if the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) was passed into law.
In 2024, Barker-Vormawor requested that his trial be heard on a daily basis; however, the court did not approve this request, and the case remains pending.

Workers at KEDA have rejected efforts by CBMWU of the TUC to introduce unionization
Workers at TWYFORD KEDA, a Chinese ceramics manufacturer in Ghana, have firmly rejected efforts by the Construction and Building Materials Workers Union (CBMWU) of the TUC to introduce unionization, calling it an unnecessary disruption to their well-established working environment.
Speaking to the media on January 20, 2025, employees from various departments expressed their contentment with their current working conditions and strong relationship with the company’s management and HR department.
They claimed CBMWU had sent unsolicited communications to all TWYFORD KEDA workers, including senior management, in December 2024, encouraging them to join the union.
The company’s management raised concerns about the unauthorized use of personal worker data, claiming the union violated the Data Protection Act.
KEDA has since demanded an explanation and the removal of the illegally obtained data. Despite this, the CBMWU continued their efforts to recruit workers, which the company sees as a serious breach of privacy and legal compliance.
Management presented evidence of financial transactions from union officials to a contract worker, alleging that union representatives used monetary incentives to influence employees.
This has caused disturbances in the engineering unit, where some temporary workers are involved in ongoing expansion projects.
While KEDA does not oppose individual employees’ rights to unionize, it insists that no official dealings will take place until the source of the illegal data acquisition is clarified and the personal information is destroyed.
The company employs over 4,100 workers, many of whom live in free dormitories provided by the company in Aboadze.
Some workers who spoke with the media praised KEDA for offering free lunch, accommodation, utilities, and salary increases.
Judith Aggrey, a finance specialist, noted that salary hikes and overtime opportunities were offered regularly.
Other workers, including engineers and HR staff, shared similar views, emphasizing the company’s compliance with labor laws and workers’ satisfaction with their conditions.
Isaac Blay, an admin supervisor in charge of the company’s canteen, highlighted the efficiency of the company’s meal provision, and dismissed the need for a union, noting that the company already takes care of its workers’ needs.
TWYFORD KEDA also promotes cultural diversity, offering language training for employees to become translators between Ghanaian and Chinese workers.
Amina from the electrical department shared her experience, saying that those who become translators receive extra allowances.
The press team left the TWYFORD KEDA facility with the impression that workers are largely happy with their employment, but expressed concern that the union’s interference could potentially disrupt the company’s expansion plans, which might impact employment opportunities for local workers.
CBMWU executives have yet to respond to media inquiries regarding the allegations of data misuse and union activities.

Amid mounting tensions within the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), grassroots members are voicing strong objections to the possible appointment of Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the new Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
While Fianko is undoubtedly qualified for the position, having built a distinguished career in electronic communications and regulatory affairs, his past role in the closure of Radio Gold and other stations has become a contentious issue among the party’s base.
Fianko, who was involved in shutting down several radio stations during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, is viewed by many within the NDC as someone who could do more harm than good if appointed to such an influential position. Critics argue that empowering him now, after his actions against media outlets linked to the NDC, would exacerbate the party’s division and betray the grassroots who worked tirelessly during the campaign. For these members, appointing Fianko feels like a slap in the face to the party’s loyal supporters, especially when other highly qualified individuals within the NDC are being overlooked.
The growing discontent has led to talks of protests, with some suggesting that they will take drastic action if Fianko’s appointment is confirmed. Drawing on past instances where supporters of the NPP forcibly removed a national security coordinator they disapproved of, these members warn that the National Communications Authority could become a target if Fianko takes office. There are also claims that Fianko has the support of a Minister Designate, though many NDC members feel that political influence should not override the need for fairness and loyalty to the party’s core values.
Despite the vocal opposition from some NDC factions, Fianko’s credentials cannot be easily dismissed. His extensive experience, both in Ghana and internationally, positions him as a well-qualified candidate to lead the NCA. According to the NCA website, he brings to the table a wealth of expertise gained over two decades in telecommunications regulation, spectrum management, and policy development. Fianko has also been a prominent figure on the international stage, serving as a consultant and advisor to multiple African countries and global organizations in the telecommunications field.
Moreover, his appointment is seen by some as a necessary step toward reforming and modernizing Ghana’s communications sector. With a career that spans the NCA’s ranks, starting from a National Service position to his current role as Director of the Engineering Division, Fianko has proven himself as a capable leader. His contributions to Ghana’s digital broadcasting migration, mobile licensing processes, and spectrum management are considered vital to the country’s progress in the sector.
However, beyond his qualifications, there is a broader debate among Ghanaians—especially those outside the political elite—on the nature of public sector appointments. Increasingly, there is concern that such positions should be filled based on merit and the skills required for the job, rather than political affiliations or rewards for past loyalty. The public sentiment suggests that appointing individuals based purely on political connections may hinder the country’s development rather than contribute to it.
For now, the NDC leadership faces a difficult challenge. While Fianko may be the right person for the job on paper, the growing dissatisfaction among party members, particularly those at the grassroots level, cannot be ignored. The decision regarding his appointment could have far-reaching consequences for the NDC’s unity and its future political strategies. As the debate unfolds, the question remains whether political loyalty or professional competence will ultimately shape the direction of Ghana’s communications landscape.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House, President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to being the leanest and most efficient in the nation’s history, capping ministerial appointments at a total of 60.
The President also emphasized the importance of accountability and integrity in public service.
He reminded the appointees that asset declaration is a critical step in fostering public trust and ensuring ethical governance.
The President emphasized the need for a strong and effective team to support his administration’s agenda and ensure efficient governance.
Addressing Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the newly sworn-in Finance Minister, the President highlighted the critical nature of his role, saying, “Citizens are counting on you to stabilize the nation’s currency.”
President Mahama has revealed plans to nominate deputy ministers for various ministries in the coming days.
“As the ministers are approved by Parliament and as they are sworn in, I will proceed to name deputy ministers for some of the ministries, which will bring the total number of ministers to 60,” he stated.
The upcoming nominations are expected to complement the work of substantive ministers as the government aims to address key national issues and drive development initiatives.
President Mahama reassured Ghanaians of his dedication to serving their interests, emphasizing, “I am here to serve at the pleasure of Ghanaians.”
Management of the First Sky Group has made a passionate appeal to government to legislate organ harvesting in the country to allow for the legal harvesting and transplant of vital body organs of donors, for patients of organ failure.
Speaking at the 22nd Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the First Sky Group, Founder and Executive Chairman, Eric Seddy Kutortse revealed that the First Sky Group, in collaboration with the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, will present a statement before Parliament and receive a legal nod for the procedure.
The successful enactment of the procedure will provide support for renal, hepatic and cardiac patients.
“There is no legislation in Ghana concerning organ harvesting. There is a requirement to create a legislative regime that will support the establishment of the long-term organ harvesting programme in Ghana. A statement by the Organ Transplant Committee under the supervision of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has been drafted for discussion.
“It will be evaluated by the stakeholders for consideration as a workable legislative enacted by Parliament. This means the vital organ could be harvested for the use of the living that need to survive.”
However, addressing the gathering on behalf of the chairman for the event, President John Dramani Mahama, Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah announced that the President will dialogue with key stakeholders in efforts of legislating organ harvesting. This, he said, will immediately follow the appointment of a Health Minister.
“His Excellency says I should let you know that as soon as his Minister of Health is in place, the necessary legislation will be looked at in consultation with our various traditional authorities and advocacy from the various CSOs to ensure that we get this in place. Because as a country, kidney issues are becoming a bit rampant and we cannot sit unconcerned.”

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that he will not appoint deputy ministers for certain ministries to honor his commitment to maintaining a cabinet of 60 ministers, as pledged during his election campaign.
The President made this declaration during his address at the swearing-in ceremony of six ministers on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the Jubilee House.
“As the ministers are approved by Parliament and sworn in, I will proceed to appoint deputy ministers for some ministries, ensuring the total number of ministers remains at 60, as I promised the people of Ghana,” President Mahama stated.
He further explained that the decision to forgo deputy ministers for selected ministries aligns with his effort to fulfill his promise of forming a lean and efficient government.
“This will make this government the leanest and, I believe, the most efficient in Ghana’s history,” he remarked.
The ceremony also marked the official commencement of duties for the first set of ministers, including Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Finance Minister, Dr. Dominic Ayine as Attorney General and Minister of Justice, John Jinapor as Minister for Energy, Kwame Agbodza as Minister for Roads and Highways, Eric Opoku as Minister for Food and Agriculture, and Haruna Iddrisu as Minister for Education.
Founder and Leader of Worldwide Miracle Outreach, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh has called for a renewed commitment to action and local ownership in Ghana, urging the new administration to translate its promises into tangible results.
Speaking on the Breakfast Show on Thursday, January 23, 2025, Rev. Dr. Tetteh emphasized the need for the country to “work the talk,” and for the new administration to honour the trust placed in them by the Ghanaian people.
Rev. Dr. Tetteh stressed the importance of fulfilling campaign promises, reminding the new leaders that, “Ghanaians voted for them because we have a value for them.” He highlighted the extensive engagement of President John Dramani Mahama with various stakeholders prior to the election, stating that he himself asked the then aspiring president “why does he want to be a president again? He’s been there before.”
According to Dr. Tetteh, Mahama’s response highlighted his understanding of the nation’s needs. “He said, Lawrence, I have touched through. But he realized that the way the nation was going, they needed somebody like him, who has the experience, who has been around before, who has reflected for 80 years, to be able to know what did not go right to put things right,” Tetteh recalled, stating that, “Those words he said really brought a lot of peace to us.”
Rev. Dr. Tetteh expressed strong support for the revitalization of key industries, calling for local ownership as a priority. He expressed displeasure at the idea of the Komenda Sugar Factory falling into foreign hands. “There are a lot of Ghanaian businessmen, indigent businessmen, who can handle our clubs, our institutions, our factories, and so that everything doesn’t go out,” he asserted.
He emphasized that any foreign involvement should be limited to support, not ownership. “If we are able to get expatriates to come and support, fine. But they should not own it,” he clarified.
He called for a return to local production, stating “Our cassava factories must work. Our sugar factories must work. Our maize factories must work. Our rice factories must work. And we must all produce.”
Drawing on the philosophy of former leader Kutu Achampong, Rev. Dr. Tetteh stressed the importance of local consumption and production: “Kutu Achampo said, let’s grow what we eat, and eat what we grow.” This, he stated, would reduce reliance on imports and stabilize the economy. “This nation will stop using durable dollars like sugar and maize, to import things. They had durable dollars. We should not be using it. And that is simple economics.”
Rev. Dr. Tetteh emphasized the importance of a stable economy, saying, “Our city must be stabilized. Our city must be strong again.” He warned that neglecting key economic indicators would devalue the currency.
Parliament’s Appointments Committee will today, Thursday, January 23, 2025, vet the ministerial nominees for the Northern, Oti, and Eastern Regions, following their nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.
The nominees are:
Ali Adolf G. John – Minister-Designate for the Northern Region
John Kwadwo Gyapong – Minister-Designate for the Oti Region
James Gunu – Minister-Designate for the Volta Region
Rita Akosua Awatey – Minister-Designate for the Eastern Region
The vetting process is part of Parliament’s responsibility to evaluate and approve presidential appointees for ministerial and regional ministerial roles.
The Committee will assess the nominees’ qualifications, experience, and vision to determine their suitability for the roles and alignment with the government’s development agenda.
These appointments are considered crucial as President Mahama seeks to bolster governance at the regional level and drive socio-economic development across the country.
The public has been encouraged to follow the vetting proceedings, which will be broadcast live on selected media platforms to ensure transparency and public engagement in the process.
A group of loyalists within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the appointment of Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, January 22, the group described the appointment by President John Dramani Mahama as disappointing and urged its immediate reconsideration.
The statement commended President Mahama for his efforts in assembling a competent team for public service roles over the past two weeks.
It acknowledged his commitment to fulfilling his promises to Ghanaians by ensuring equitable representation in critical government appointments.
However, the group highlighted concerns about the exclusion of deserving NDC loyalists in favor of individuals with ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Citing Mr. Sarpong’s previous association with the NPP, the group argued that his appointment was unsuitable.
They noted that Mr. Sarpong was appointed to the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in September 2020, alongside other NPP-aligned personalities.
“It is troubling that such a figure is given a distinguished political appointment when numerous experienced and committed NDC members are overlooked,” the statement read.
The group issued a stern warning to President Mahama, demanding the immediate withdrawal of Mr. Sarpong’s appointment.
They threatened to organize protests if their concerns are not addressed, emphasizing that the hard work of NDC members in securing the party’s victory in the 2024 elections must not be disregarded.
“Mr. President, respectfully, please do the needful. There are other people more deserving of this position than this NPP-stained person,” the statement concluded.
The Europa League offers up a Battle of Britain today, when struggling Premier League giants, Manchester United, welcome Scottish outfit, Rangers, to Old Trafford.
While the Red Devils currently sit seventh in the 36-team table, the Gers are just one point and one place further back in eighth spot.
Languishing in 13th place in the Premier League table, Man United’s hopes of securing European football for next season seem to be fading every passing week, with 11 points now separating the 20-time English champions from the top seven, while they are 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
Success in the Europa League would salvage something positive from what has been a dismal campaign thus far, and Man United are on course to secure an automatic last-16 spot as they currently sit inside the top eight, one point clear of ninth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, with two games remaining they beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1 away in their most recent match last month.
The Red Devils, one of five teams who are yet to lose in this season’s Europa League, will face FCSB in their final League Phase fixture, but they must first focus on Thursday’s clash with a Rangers outfit whom they have never suffer defeat against in four previous meetings (W3 D1), keeping four clean sheets in the process.
Amorim is not the only manager under pressure to grind out positive results, as Philippe Clement is tasked with turning Rangers’ fortunes around on all fronts after being backed by the club’s hierarchy.
Since enduring a run of just two wins in eight games across all competitions, and since CEO Patrick Stewart revealed that “changing a manager isn’t a silver bullet solution”, Rangers have won each of their last three matches under Clement by an aggregate score of 11-1.
Rangers may sit 13 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, but they are in a decent position to secure a last-16 spot in the Europa League, currently clinging on to a top-eight position, while they are four points clear of the elimination zone heading into their final two fixtures against Man United and Union SG.
The Glaswegian giants, who picked up a point in a 1-1 draw with Spurs in their last Europa League match, travel to Old Trafford on Thursday having won just one of their last eight European away games against English opposition – a 2-1 success over Leeds United in qualifying for the 1992-93 Champions League.
Marcus Rashford has missed the Red Devils’ last nine matches since featuring in the Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen on December 12, and the attacker is set to remain away from Amorim’s side amidst uncertainty over his future, while Antony is also unlikely to feature as he is reportedly close to joining Real Betis on loan.
File photo of one the schools under trees in Ghana
Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare has observed that nearly 80% of educational institutions described as ‘schools under trees’ are in the country’s northern parts.
Discussing the gaps in the education sector on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Asare said the challenges disproportionately affected communities in those areas.
“About 80% of the 5,400 schools under trees are in the geographical northern regions. When you hear about one million desks required, more than 80% of that deficit is in the geographical north, and then Western North and Oti Regions.
“When you hear about teacher deficits, up until last year, in Central Gonja alone, about 80% of teachers needed in primary and kindergarten were not available,” Asare noted.
He said the disparity in performance could be seen at the Basic Education Certificate Education (BECE) where some of these deprived communities record pass rates well below the national average.
“Every indicator of access and quality, the gap between the pass rate at the national level and then in the deprived districts, it’s 20% off the points.
“So the pass rate in BECE is 80% nationally. It’s 60% there. So that’s a huge gap,” he said.
On the campaign trail, the National Democratic Congress made the point that the previous government’s flagship Free Senior High School policy had drained funding from critically needed areas in the education sector.
Undoubtedly, access and quality to basic education will be amongst the topical issues on Haruna Iddrisu’s desk when he takes in the Ministry of Education.

Dr. John Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition
The domestic energy sector in Ghana is currently facing significant challenges, including rising debts, gas shortages, and operational inefficiencies that threaten national stability.
According to the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC), strategic interventions are urgently required to prevent further deterioration and secure a sustainable energy future.
Despite initiatives like the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM), the energy think tank stated that systemic mismanagement has exacerbated financial burdens and strained relations with independent power producers (IPPs), leading to persistent power rationing.
ASEC emphasises that addressing these challenges is essential for fostering economic growth, sustaining industrial production, and creating jobs.
In a statement signed by Dr. Elvis Twumasi, Director of Research and Innovation at ASEC, the organisation highlighted the urgent need to address gas supply issues.
ASEC recommended “completing Train Two of the Atuabo Gas Plant to boost capacity to 450 MMscfd, finalizing the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in Tema, and constructing the Takoradi-to-Tema (TT) gas pipeline.”
These projects, it noted, must be executed with transparency and accountability to ensure energy reliability during disruptions.
ASEC also proposed privatizing the commercial operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The think tank argued that privatization could enhance revenue collection and operational efficiency.
However, it emphasized the importance of implementing a transparent framework, informed by the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), to avoid repeating mistakes from previous attempts.
Furthermore, ASEC called for transparent utilization of levies. The organization explained that proper management of the US$650 million generated annually through the Energy Sector Recovery Levy (ESLA)—including publishing detailed reports on fund usage—could foster public trust and attract critical investments, such as the US$316 million Ghana Power Compact from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
The think tank also recommended aligning electricity tariffs with consumption patterns and operational costs to ensure financial sustainability. It advocated for deregulating the electricity market and renegotiating agreements with IPPs to promote competitiveness and transparency.
To meet renewable energy targets and reduce dependency on fossil fuels, ASEC advised investing in low-carbon energy solutions, including solar, wind, and nuclear energy.
Additionally, it recommended upgrading ECG’s metering system by replacing outdated meters nationwide to address tampering, expand rural coverage, and minimize revenue losses.
ASEC urged the government to prioritize these recommendations and move beyond political rhetoric to take decisive action.
Implementing these measures, the statement concluded, would stabilize the energy sector, support economic resilience, and position the government as a transformative force in Ghana’s development.

Kofi Adams, the Minister-designate of Sports and Recreation, has been talking about his connections with Ghana sports and has revealed that he is a fan of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
The Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency told Happy FM that he is a Porcupine Warrior and aligns with the ethos and beliefs of the club.
“I’m a fan of Kumasi Asante Kotoko,” he said on Happy FM.
Kofi Adams also opened up on his plan for the sports industry, which will be anchored on unity and transformation.
“When the responsibility is entrusted to me, I will do my best and pray for God’s blessing to achieve success. Every leader must be prepared to face challenges. My focus will be on uniting fans and fostering a positive atmosphere for sports,” Adams stated.
He added, “It’s an opportunity for me to transform the love people have for football into something meaningful. Right now, they love the game, but we’ve failed to channel that passion into anything productive.”
Adams also urged the media to actively engage with football fans, encouraging them to share their concerns about the current state of sports in the country.
He highlighted the importance of collaboration between fans, the media, and club administrators to ensure a collective effort to revive Ghanaian sports.
“The media must ask fans if they’re satisfied with the state of our sports. Otherwise, we’ll be left with only European sports while ours fades away. We need to generate positive energy. And to the managers of these clubs, do you want to wait until there’s nothing left? Rivalries and divisions have caused the decline of sports in this country. The time to act is now,” Adams warned.
Ghana is in mourning following the heartbreaking news of the passing of Nana Asante Soaba, a revered broadcaster at Oyerepa FM. The beloved media personality died on January 21, 2025, after battling a prolonged illness. His death marks the end of a remarkable career that touched countless lives.

His commitment to his craft and his ability to connect with listeners earned him admiration from fans and colleagues alike. Despite his health challenges, he remained dedicated to his work until his condition worsened in recent months.
A family source confirmed that the seasoned broadcaster had been unwell for several years, yet his resilience and determination kept him active in the media industry. Unfortunately, his passing has left a significant void in the Kumasi media landscape and beyond.
Nana Asante Soaba began his career at Angel FM, where his exceptional broadcasting skills earned him recognition and awards. In 2021, he transitioned to Oyerepa FM, where he further solidified his reputation as a talented and humorous host. His unique style and engaging personality endeared him to a loyal audience, making him a household name in the region.
The news of his death has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media. Fans and colleagues have been sharing heartfelt tributes, expressing their sorrow at the loss of such an iconic figure. The Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, has expressed concerns about Ghana’s economic future following the swearing-in of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Finance Minister.
John Darko said the Finance Minister’s employment history does not reflect the necessary credentials to manage the country’s economic affairs.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, January 22, John Darko questioned Dr. Forson’s ability to effectively fulfill his mandate when there are unanswered questioned about his employment history.
“You and I will have to watch this space for the next 24 months, I believe in the next two years, this country, if care is not taken, we are going to face some difficulties. The Finance Minister, his record as a Member of Parliament looks impeccable but his record as somebody who can manage the Finance Ministry, I believe is next to nothing.
“Because his employment history tells it all. The only company he has worked in and said he was a director, is this company in the UK and it turns out that the information he provided is wrong. It turns out that that company has actually been liquidated and you are going to get this person to run your Ministry of Finance. It is a big issue and Ghanaians must ask questions.”
Ato Forson and five others were sworn-in by President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday and was tasked to fight to curb inflation, the Cedi depreciation, rising debt levels and a host of other macroeconomic challenges confronting Ghana.

The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Kofi Baah Agyepong, has officially resigned from his position, effective January 24, 2025, citing personal commitments and aspirations as the reason for his decision.
In a resignation letter addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, Agyepong reflected on his tenure, calling it “an honour and a privilege” to serve as CEO of the agency over the past two years.
“I am formally tendering my resignation as the Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), effective 24th January 2025,” the letter stated. “However, I have decided to step down to focus on personal commitments and aspirations.”
Agyepong also expressed his good wishes for the President, saying, “I wish you continued wisdom and strength in your service to the nation,” while expressing confidence in the agency’s future successes.
During his tenure, Agyepong oversaw key initiatives aimed at addressing youth unemployment and enhancing vocational and entrepreneurial skills among Ghanaian youth. His leadership at YEA was marked by efforts to reduce unemployment levels and create opportunities for young people across the country.
He assured a smooth transition, noting that he remains “within reach on all matters that require urgent attention and consideration.”
The resignation of Mr Agyepong comes at a time when the Youth Employment Agency continues to play a pivotal role in tackling youth unemployment, a critical issue in Ghana. His departure leaves a significant gap in leadership as the agency moves forward with its mandate.
The new government has yet to announce Agyepong’s successor.

Lilwin gifted his mother Ante Adwoa Afrah, a lavish 12-bedroom mansion for her 80th birthday recently.
Former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has indicated that the committee investigating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the Ashanti region in the December 7 elections will soon present its report.
In the election, President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured a decisive win with over 6 million votes, compared to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 4 million votes.
The NDC also gained a parliamentary majority, unseating several NPP Members of Parliament. The NDC currently hold 183 seats compared to the NPP’s 88 seats.
Speaking to Citi News, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu assured that the committee’s findings would soon be ready.
“My own party, we performed, frankly speaking, rather badly, to be more blunt. We performed very poorly and abysmally. The party in Ashanti [region] put up a team to interrogate the circumstances that led to our crash.
“And I have been put in charge of it so I have been dealing with it. I guess in the next couple of weeks, we should be through with everything.”

The Minority in Parliament, led by its leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has announced plans to conduct a fact-finding mission in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, following violent clashes between local miners and AngloGold Ashanti.
The clashes, which claimed nine lives and left several others injured, involved confrontations between local miners and military personnel deployed to provide security for AngloGold Ashanti’s operations.
Expressing concern over the incident, Afenyo-Markin called for immediate and comprehensive action to address the root causes of the conflict.
He warned that if the government fails to initiate a credible investigation, Parliament will step in with its own inquiry.
“If the government does not act – we don’t want any empty action but a comprehensive action that people will have confidence in. So this Parliament will have to constitute a committee to immediately visit Obuasi to get into this matter and ensure that the business community gets the assurances that the business community is safe to do business in all other places that there is violence.”
Afenyo-Markin highlighted the need for peaceful coexistence among stakeholders, including local communities, mining companies and security forces.
He stressed that Parliament has a critical role in ensuring oversight and fostering public confidence in the resolution process.
He reiterated the Minority’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of all parties involved and ensuring that business operations in mining communities can proceed without fear of violence.

Both men have for a long time played various roles in the GHALCA.
Ansah, who reportedly has the backing of GFA President Kurt Okraku, is up against Koomson, a former GHALCA executive council member, who is pushing for reforms.

The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has lambasted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentarians over President John Dramani Mahama’s use of the Dzata private jet for his recent travels.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Annoh-Dompreh expressed concern over President Mahama’s use of his brother’s private jet for state duties instead of the official presidential jet, the Falcon.
Drawing a comparison between the leadership of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President Mahama, the Nsawam Adoagyiri MP pointed out that the former president would not have used his brother’s private jet for state travels, underscoring the significant contrast between the two leaders.
“… President Mahama is different from Akufo-Addo and that is true. President Mahama is indeed different and that is why Akufo-Addo will not travel on a flight owned by his brother, he will not. President Mahama will gladly travel on his brother’s flight but Akufo-Addo will travel on a flight owned by the state. That is the difference and you are refusing to recognize it,” the lawmaker stated.
The New Patriotic Party MP further warned that President Mahama is setting a precedent that might cause the country international embarrassment.
Annoh-Dompreh, while acknowledging Akufo-Addo’s governance, expressed his admiration and pride for the former leader, highlighting how he adhered to established procedures by using state flights.
“… On this matter of the flight and who cares about this country, we will have a full day to discuss this matter. I am proud of Akufo-Addo for having stuck to a regime where he used a flight owned by the state. Akufo-Addo will not travel on a flight owned by his brother, no,” he added.
He also called on the NDC Majority caucus to be ashamed of themselves for endorsing what he regarded as unacceptable.
“You should be ashamed of yourselves that the president is traveling on a flight owned by his brother, you should be ashamed. You should be proud of what Akufo-Addo has done,” he said.
The lawmaker’s comments followed criticisms of President John Dramani Mahama’s use of the Dzata private jet, owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, during his travels to Senegal and The Gambia.
Explaining the controversy, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Acting Spokesperson of the Office of the President, stated that the use of the private jet was a necessary and temporary measure.
He emphasised that this decision was based on considerations of safety, security, and cost-effectiveness, especially in comparison to using state-owned aircraft.
Kwakye Ofosu further noted that the presidential plane is currently undergoing inspection by the Communications Squadron, the Air Force unit responsible for its operations.
“This situation is no different from a minister using their spouse’s car while their official vehicle is out of service,” he added, using a relatable analogy to reinforce his point.
“It’s a simple, practical solution. There’s no reason for this to be an issue for the state.”

play videoMinister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie
One of the highly anticipated vetting sessions, especially by stakeholders in the tourism and creative arts sector, was that of Dzifa Abla Gomashie, the Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
Nominated for a role that massively contributes to the country’s economy, all eyes were on her, keenly observing her intentions, articulation, and intellect.
Stakeholders were particularly focused on hearing solid points from Dzifa Gomashie, who has been selected to drive this critical sector.
Throughout her vetting, questions came from all angles, and her answers highlighted several key points that are worth noting.
For those who missed the session, here’s a breakdown of some of the most important points for the sector stakeholders:
Here are some key takeaways from Dzifa Gomashie’s vetting:
Review high hotel rates and expansion of facilities
Dzifa Gomashie acknowledged the concern over the high cost of hotel rates and emphasised her intention to address this issue.
She also expressed plans to facilitate further expansion of hotel facilities to attract more tourists, clients, and investors, thus preventing them from choosing other destinations.
“This is a very huge concern as far as hotel rates are concerned. Even with hotels that have franchises all over the world, ours tend to be very high as compared to them,” she added.
Improve infrastructure capacity in the tourism industry
Gomashie highlighted the need to improve infrastructure within the tourism industry to promote investment and growth.
“I agree that our infrastructure must meet the growing demands of both the world and our country. This is something that is visible to us all. I plan to engage with the Minister of Finance and work with anyone who has the expertise to engage the private sector in boosting infrastructure capacity. The lack of these facilities takes away potential revenue for the country,” she explained.
Review the overwhelming tax on hospitality businesses
Addressing the high taxes in the hospitality sector, Dzifa Gomashie called for collective engagement with the finance ministry and industry stakeholders to tackle this issue.
“Taxes have been the cry of the hospitality industry since way back when I used to MC their events. It is an issue that we must collectively deal with. I’ll be tagging along with the finance minister and lobbying him vigorously,” she stated.
Promote ecotourism
Dzifa Gomashie expressed commitment to working with the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology and allied agencies to promote ecotourism in the country.
“It will be great to work with the ministry of environment, science and technology and also allied agencies to see how best we can do this thing,” she stated.
Advocate for increased government investment in the sector
Gomashie emphasised the need for more government investment in the tourism sector to ensure it operates at its full potential.
“This is an area where the government needs to focus more attention. I will push the agenda for increased investments so that we can tap into the sector’s full potential,” she said.
Collaborate with MCEs to identify promotable areas
She highlighted the importance of engaging with Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) to identify and promote unique areas within their regions.
“When I met with Julius Debrah, who met with the MCEs at GIMPA, I stressed the importance of them bringing forward areas that need to be promoted. I’ll be championing this effort,” Gomashie said.
Advocate for road improvements leading to tourist destinations
One of her key promises was to push for the improvement of roads leading to tourist destinations to boost accessibility and increase visitor numbers.
“I will be actively pushing for the fixing of roads leading to these sites, as improved infrastructure will encourage more visits, benefiting everyone involved. I’ll lobby hard for this, just as I did when I served as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts,” she affirmed.
The blaze grew to more than 9,200 acres in several hours on Wednesday
A new fast-moving wildfire has erupted in Los Angeles County, prompting tens of thousands to evacuate a region already reeling from the most destructive fires in its history.
The Hughes fire ignited about 45 miles north-west of the city of Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, near Castaic Lake in a mountainous area that borders several residential areas and schools.
The blaze grew to more than 9,200 acres in several hours on Wednesday, fuelled by winds and dry brush. No homes or businesses have been damaged, and fire officials expressed confidence about getting the blaze under control.
The new fire is located north of the two mammoth blazes – which are still burning – that destroyed multiple neighbourhoods in the Los Angeles area earlier this month.
Local news showed residents near the Hughes fire hosing down their homes and gardens with water and others rushing to evacuate neighbourhoods.
Orange flames lined the mountains as aircraft dropped water and flame retardant.
The region is once again under a red flag warning, which cautions of a high fire risk due to strong winds and dry, low-humid conditions.
Winds in the area were blowing around 20 to 30mph (32 to 48km), but could pick up, which would fan the blaze and make it harder for air crews to operate.
About 31,000 people in the area are under a mandatory evacuation order and another 23,000 have been warned they may have to flee, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. A jail in the area was evacuating nearly 500 inmates at the facility, he added.
The fire continued to grow as the sun set, but Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said he believed crews were making progress.
“The situation remains dynamic, and the fire remains a difficult fire to contain, although we are getting the upper hand,” he said.
Chief Marrone explained how different this fire is compared to the Palisades and Eaton fires, which killed at least 28 people and decimated more than 10,000 homes and businesses earlier this month.
He said it was a mix of lower winds – unlike the 70 to 90mph winds seen during the previous fires – and having so many helicopters and planes able to fight the blaze from above.
“I think that we’ve all been on edge over the last 16 days,” he said. “We were able to amass a lot of fire resources early on to change what this fire looks like.”
Ed Fletcher, who works for Cal Fire – California’s statewide fire agency – told the BBC that this fire was different than those earlier this month. The winds are not as strong yet, he said, and there are a lot of crews trying to tame the flames.
“It’s super dry and we know it will be increasingly windy later,” he said. “We’ll know more in a few hours.”
Mr Fletcher noted the area is not highly populated and current winds are blowing the fire toward Castaic Lake, which is acting as a buffer between the Castaic area – home to about 20,000 residents.
“If it jumps the lake,” he said, “it becomes a much more dynamic situation.”
One woman who evacuated her home told NBC 4 that she was stuck on Interstate 5, California’s primary transportation highway that runs through the state. Parts of the interstate in the area had been closed due to the fire.
“It looked like a cloud, but as you got close, it looked like we were driving into hell,” she said of the dark smoke and red flames she saw. “It was pretty terrifying to be honest with you.”
She acknowledged being on edge after watching the Palisades and Eaton fires burn nearby.
“I don’t know why they keep popping up,” she said. “It’s definitely a scary time in this area.”
Two other fires ignited Wednesday farther south near San Diego and Oceanside, officials said.
They are both smaller – 85 acres for the Lilac fire near Oceanside and 3.9 acres for the Center fire – but were burning in populated areas. Fire crews appeared to have a handle on both of the blazes and evacuation orders had been mostly lifted.
Dana Dierkes, a spokesperson for the Angeles National Forest, noted the winds and dry brush have made these recent fires much harder to fight.
“We don’t have a fire season in California. We have a fire year,” she said. “We’ve had wildfires in January before, but it’s exacerbated by the Santa Ana winds. The wind is a huge factor when we’ve had such a dry year.”
Rain is in the weekend forecast in the region, a welcome bit of news to douse the fire threat. But the rainfall is bringing new fears in the form of mudslides, flooding and landslides.
Areas touched by the recent fires are particularly at risk because torched grounds aren’t as absorbent.
Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order on Monday to help free up resources for flood and landslide preparation after the fires.
Crews have been filling thousands of sandbags for danger areas.

Ofori joined Ethnikos Achnas this summer from Nea Salamis and has made 15 league appearances
Ghanaian defender Richard Ofori, who plays for Ethnikos Achnas in Cyprus, has been handed a two-match ban and fined for making an obscene gesture during a match against AEK Larnaca two weeks ago.
Ofori, 24, used a “f**k you” gesture during the heated encounter, prompting disciplinary action from the league authorities.
The match ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw. Achnas took an early lead through Spanish midfielder Pablo Gonzalez in the 10th minute, only for AEK to equalize six minutes later with a goal from Aitor Cantalapiedra.
Argentinian forward Enzo Cabrera put AEK ahead in the 37th minute, but Ethnikos salvaged a point when Julian Bonetto converted a penalty just 10 minutes from time.
Ofori joined Ethnikos Achnas this summer from Nea Salamis and has made 15 league appearances, scoring once this season.
The ban means the Ghanaian will miss two crucial fixtures as Ethnikos fights to improve its position in the league standings.
This incident highlights the intensity and pressure of football competitions in Cyprus, where emotions can sometimes get the better of players.
During the ministerial vetting of George Opare Addo earlier today, actor and politician John Dumelo posed critical questions about addressing unemployment and enhancing agricultural value chains. Speaking at the vetting session, Dumelo sought clarification on how the nominee plans to tackle the pressing issues faced by young people and farmers in Ghana.
Dumelo’s first question centered on the plight of jobless youth, particularly in his constituency of Ayawaso West, where young men often resort to hustling in traffic to survive.”My question is simple,” Dumelo began. “If you come to Ayawaso West, you have a lot of street guys that are young, and sometimes they do bother motorists in traffic. Is there any plan for them so they can stop what they are doing? This is one of the biggest problems we are facing in Ayawaso West, and it has become a thing of concern for me.”
Dumelo emphasized that the root of the issue lies in unemployment, asserting that if these young people had stable jobs, they would not resort to street hustling.
“These young guys are doing that because they are jobless. When they have something doing, I don’t think they are going to be there. So I want to know how you intend to tackle that problem for us,” he added.
As a self-declared proud farmer, Dumelo’s second question focused on agribusiness and the need to add value to farmers’ produce. While acknowledging Opare Addo’s previous comments on supporting farmers, Dumelo urged the nominee to expand his vision to include value addition and small-scale industries.
“You did touch on agriculture, but as a proud farmer myself, I would want you to elaborate on agribusiness—adding value to what we farmers produce,” Dumelo said. “You talked about helping farmers, but what about those who want to set up small industries and add value to the value chain? I would love to hear more about your plans for this.”
The session, shared by Citi FM on their official Instagram page, quickly gained traction and sparked widespread public engagement. Many viewers praised Dumelo’s questions for addressing critical issues affecting everyday Ghanaians.
When attending church services or special events like baptisms, christenings, or community gatherings, it’s essential to choose outfits that are both stylish and respectful. Fashion doesn’t have to be sacrificed for modesty, as there are plenty of stunning styles that allow you to look elegant and refined for these occasions. Whether you prefer classic, contemporary, or trendy styles, there are options to suit every taste.
For a timeless, graceful look, the A-line dress is a perfect choice. Known for its flattering silhouette, the A-line dress gently flares out from the waist, creating a shape that complements various body types. Opt for a midi or knee-length A-line dress made from soft fabrics like chiffon, lace, or cotton. A simple floral pattern or solid color can add sophistication while keeping the look appropriate for church or special events. Pair it with a stylish pair of heels or ballet flats, and you’ll have an ensemble that’s both comfortable and chic.
Another option to consider is the pencil skirt and blouse combination. A high-waisted pencil skirt, paired with a tailored blouse or shirt, exudes professionalism and elegance. Look for blouses with modest necklines and simple embellishments, such as lace trim or light pleats, to keep the outfit stylish but understated. This look can easily be dressed up with accessories like statement earrings or a chic handbag.
For those seeking a more contemporary or edgy style, the maxi dress is a stunning option. This long, flowing dress can be adorned with lace, beading, or floral prints for a modern touch. A maxi dress offers great coverage while still allowing for movement and comfort. Choose one with long sleeves or a subtle neckline to ensure it’s suitable for church and formal events.
For a sophisticated yet simple look, a suit dress can be an excellent choice. This classic piece combines the elegance of a dress with the sharp lines of a suit. The structure of the suit dress offers a tailored, polished appearance, and it can be paired with a matching jacket or blazer. This style works well for formal church events and other occasions that call for a refined look.
If you’re attending an outdoor or semi-formal event, a fit-and-flare dress is an ideal pick. The flared skirt offers a relaxed vibe, while the fitted bodice adds a touch of elegance. Opt for a dress with soft pleats, floral prints, or subtle embellishments like beads or sequins to add a bit of glam without being too flashy. This style is flattering, comfortable, and perfect for church services, garden parties, or other celebratory events.
Finally, for a more traditional and modest look, long skirts with blouses remain a timeless and elegant choice. Long, flowing skirts paired with a blouse or a lightweight knit top can be both stylish and modest. Choose simple, solid colors or subtle patterns, and complete the look with understated accessories like pearl earrings or a delicate necklace.
No matter the occasion, there are plenty of stunning styles to consider when dressing for church and special events. From classic A-line dresses to modern maxi gowns, these outfits offer a perfect balance of elegance, comfort, and respectfulness, ensuring you look your best while remaining true to the occasion.

George Opare-Addo, the Minister-Designate for Youth Development and Employment, has openly acknowledged his membership in Freemasonry, a global fraternal organization.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 22, 2025, Opare-Addo addressed questions about his affiliation, affirming the values and principles he has embraced through the organization.
“Yes, I’m a Freemason,” he stated candidly.
When asked whom he places his trust in during difficulties and dangers, he responded, “The grand architect of the universe,” a phrase commonly associated with Freemasonry’s spiritual philosophy.
His disclosure prompted a brief exchange among committee members, with some seeking clarity on how his association with Freemasonry might influence his public service.
The admission has sparked mixed reactions. While some have lauded his transparency, others have raised concerns about the potential implications of his affiliation.
Despite the varied responses, Opare-Addo remains focused on his goals, reaffirming his commitment to youth empowerment and advancing Ghana’s development agenda as he awaits confirmation for the ministerial role.
The Executive Director of the Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), Ben Boakye has provided reasons why President John Dramani Mahama should not disappoint on the Mineral Income Investment Fund (MIIF).
He explained that the MIIF was created to facilitate the Agyapa Royalty Investments—a concept masterminded by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and his Deputy Charles Adu Boahen to sell Ghana’s gold royalties on the London Stock Exchange.
The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, is set to officially assume the position of Majority Leader in Parliament today, January 23, following the appointment of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Minister of Finance.
The elevation of Dr. Ato Forson to the Finance Ministry created a vacancy in the Majority leadership, paving way for Ayariga’s appointment.
Known for his legal expertise and extensive parliamentary experience, Ayariga is expected to bring a fresh and pragmatic approach to leading the Majority Caucus.
Over the years, Ayariga has established himself as a vocal advocate for his constituents and an active participant in legislative debates.

The reshuffle also includes significant changes to other key parliamentary roles.

His nomination also opens up that leadership opportunity on the majority front bench.

Ricketts-Hagan, recognised for his strategic insights and leadership acumen, is expected to work closely with Ayariga to ensure seamless coordination of parliamentary business.
Additionally, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the MP for South Dayi, is tipped to take over as Majority Chief Whip.
Known for his assertive contributions to parliamentary debates, Dafeamekpor will be expected to adopt a firm yet collaborative approach to maintaining party discipline and aligning MPs with the government’s legislative priorities.
Speculation is also rife about a potential elevation for Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, the MP for Ada and current Second Deputy Whip. Reports suggest she may be promoted to First Deputy Whip.

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Anthony K. Sarpong as acting GRA boss
A group named NDC Loyalists Against Injustice has expressed its displeasure over President John Mahama’s appointment of Anthony K. Sarpong as Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
According to the group, the GRA boss is a known sympathizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and may not effectively serve the government’s interests in the discharge of his duties.
The group stated that it hoped the people who worked tirelessly for the NDC to secure victory in the 2024 general election would be adequately rewarded, and not overlooked or sidelined for any reason.
In a statement, it noted that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has failed to live up to the confidence placed in him, specifically in relation to his appointment at the helm of the GRA.
“His appointment of Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong is shocking and disappointing because this is a man who has direct ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). In fact, Sarpong was appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo to serve on the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) in September 2020,” it said.
“What makes this more troubling is the fact that such a person, who served alongside other known NPP-aligned personalities like Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah-who also became the boss at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)-would be given such a distinguished political appointment ahead of the wealth of other experienced NDC figures. These individuals have committed their time and efforts to this great party, helping it win a decisive election in 2024, as has also been emphatically represented in the Parliament of Ghana,” it added.
The group warned the president to revoke the appointment or face their wrath.
“We are, by this release, serving notice to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that we are appalled and completely disgusted by this appointment to the GRA and demand that he, as a matter of urgency, recalls this appointment or risk facing very unpalatable protests from us.”
STATEMENT BY NDC LOYALISTS AGAINST INJUSTICE AGAINST THE APPOINTMENT OF ANTHONY K. SARPONG AS GRA COMMISSIONER-GENERAL BY H. E. JOHN MAHAMA
It has become pressingly necessary for us to issue this press statement in the utter disappointment of the appointment of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong for the role of Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
His Excellency has proven beyond doubt that he is a man who is poised to work in the interests of Ghanaians and to ensure that there is an equal distribution of his selection of appointees or nominations for critical offices of public service. And we commend him for the tough job he has been able to execute in the last 14 Days, in fulfilment of his promise to Ghanaians.
In all, the President has made some of the best choices for all the sectors and as he continues to do, for several corporations and institutions of state, with queues of National Democratic Congress (NDC) loyalists, who have put in their sweats and blood, literally, to give the party the magnanimous victory it recorded in the 2024 Election, still inexhausted. The hopes are that the people who got our Great NDC Party to this junction of our political journey, will be adequately rewarded, and not overlooked or sidestepped for whatever reasons.
But it has appeared that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has failed to live up to the confidence that we have all placed in him, specifically in relation to his appointment at the helm of the GRA. His appointment of Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong is shocking and disappointing because this is a man who has direct ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). In fact, Sarpong was appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo to serve on the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), in September 2020.

We are, by this release, serving notice to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that we are appalled and completely disgusted by this appointment to the GRA and demand that he, as a matter of urgency, recalls this appointment or risk facing very unpalatable protests from us.
We must state that the confidence, high expectations and nationwide trust that Ghanaians have reposed in him and in this NDC administration is something we are all happy about, and would not intentionally wish to mar that, but if such moves, as what has happened at the GRA persist, we will be pushed to the wall to do so.
The hardworking NDC members who were in the field and in the background, solidly working to get the party back to power cannot sit and allow this and Mr President, respectfully, please do the needful. There are other people more deserving of this than this NPP-stained person known as Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong.

Ghanaians do not manage emotions properly – Entrepreneur
Entrepreneur, cum actor John Dumelo has attributed the collapse and unsustainability of businesses in Ghana to some negative attitudes by employees.
According to the farmer, the dishonesty of workers can be attributed to the non-performance of businesses, not in the country. He thus prays for all such people to be unveiled in this new year.
In a tweet sighted by GhanaWeb on January 8, John Dumelo said, “the downfall of many Ghanaian businesses are the dishonest workers. I pray 2022, all dishonest workers will be caught in Jesus’s name”.
Earlier, Founder of the Kama Group of Companies, Dr Michael Agyekum Addo, said Ghanaian businesses have been hindered by envy and jealousy.
He attributed the non-performance of indigenous businesses and their inability to last to this canker.
Speaking with Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (5 January), Dr Agyekum Addo said, “At the age of 60 to 65, I was still confronted with the question: why do companies collapse in spite of all the training that we give to staff, all the incentives, improvements in working conditions?”
He lamented how important it is for Ghana to address the issue “because it is affecting our politics, our businesses and the country.”

Kwesi Pratt, the Managing Editor of The Insight Newspaper, has admonished President John Dramani Mahama to adhere to his promise of keeping only 60 ministers in his administration.
According to him, it is time for the Ghanaian people to hold statesmen accountable for their promises during an election period.
“I have heard some NDC members saying even though the president promised 60 ministers, if he gets an excess of maybe 2 or 1, making it 62 or 61, it is okay. It is never okay, and nobody is going to take that. He promised that he would give us 60 ministers and we are looking at only 60 ministers,” he said.
Speaking in an interview on a panel discussion on Peace FM on January 22, 2025, he stated that should the president keep his promise, Ghanaians will commend him highly.
“Even for me, I will be glad if the number is 58 and I will commend him, but if the number passes 60, we will never agree to that.
“For the ministers, not even 1 should be in excess. 60 is 60. If the number is 61, no, we won’t agree, but 58 we will agree,” he added.
The president has so far appointed 42 ministers and is awaiting the appointment of their deputies.
However, during his campaign period, President Mahama promised to trim his government to a lean administration and would work with only 60 ministers.

Hopeson Adorye has extended heartfelt gratitude to Sammi Awuku for his remarkable show of support and compassion.
In a Facebook post on January 21, 2025, Adorye shared how the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North offered condolences during a challenging time for his family, despite the criticisms Adorye had previously directed at him.
He recounted how Sammi Awuku went out of his way to attend the funeral of his late mother-in-law, balancing his busy schedule with this act of kindness.
“Sammi Awuku won my admiration despite my earlier criticisms. As the funeral of my late mother-in-law approached, he reached out to console my wife and me. On the day itself, he arrived as early as 8 am, stayed until around 11 am, and then returned to his constituency for other obligations. What an exceptional man,” Adorye wrote.
Deeply touched by this gesture, Adorye reflected on his past comments and vowed to never speak ill of Sammi Awuku again. He expressed his resolve to support Awuku as a friend and brother moving forward.
“To Sammi, I make a promise: I will never say anything negative about you again. From this day, you are a brother and a friend. And to everyone, please do not bring me any negative news about him because I won’t entertain it. Sammi, you have truly moved me, and I am forever grateful. Friends and brothers for life. May God bless you richly,” Adorye concluded.
The funeral for Hopeson Adorye’s mother-in-law, who recently passed away, was held on January 18, 2025, in Tema. Sammi Awuku’s presence and support during this time left a lasting impression on Adorye, strengthening their bond.
