Management of the First Sky Group has made a passionate appeal to government to legislate organ harvesting in the country to allow for the legal harvesting and transplant of vital body organs of donors, for patients of organ failure.
Speaking at the 22nd Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the First Sky Group, Founder and Executive Chairman, Eric Seddy Kutortse revealed that the First Sky Group, in collaboration with the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, will present a statement before Parliament and receive a legal nod for the procedure.
The successful enactment of the procedure will provide support for renal, hepatic and cardiac patients.
“There is no legislation in Ghana concerning organ harvesting. There is a requirement to create a legislative regime that will support the establishment of the long-term organ harvesting programme in Ghana. A statement by the Organ Transplant Committee under the supervision of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has been drafted for discussion.
“It will be evaluated by the stakeholders for consideration as a workable legislative enacted by Parliament. This means the vital organ could be harvested for the use of the living that need to survive.”
However, addressing the gathering on behalf of the chairman for the event, President John Dramani Mahama, Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah announced that the President will dialogue with key stakeholders in efforts of legislating organ harvesting. This, he said, will immediately follow the appointment of a Health Minister.
“His Excellency says I should let you know that as soon as his Minister of Health is in place, the necessary legislation will be looked at in consultation with our various traditional authorities and advocacy from the various CSOs to ensure that we get this in place. Because as a country, kidney issues are becoming a bit rampant and we cannot sit unconcerned.”
