Cina Soul would rather marry outside of entertainment

0

While music star Cina Soul wants a fun partner for marriage, she has said she would prefer someone from outside the entertainment world.

She spoke on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning while promoting her debut album titled Did I Lie?

To explain her preference, Cina Soul said she wanted to vicariously experience a different world through her partner rather than discuss entertainment issues, which she was already accustomed to.

“I feel like artiste-to-artiste relationships can be complicated. They could work for some people, but for me, I want someone with a different story. I want us to come back home and talk about things like, ‘How was the hospital? Oh, how was court? How was the bank?’ Not every day, ‘Okay, the studio,’ where we’ll just talk about the same thing. So, I just want something different,” the soul and highlife singer said.

The slender beauty noted that contrary to what some might imagine, marriage to someone outside the creative arts would not be mundane.

“I don’t think it will be boring. You’ll have so many stories. I think he’ll say things like, ‘This person did this, and then I saved a life.’ I feel it will be very interesting,” the Ojorley hitmaker emphasized.

Three people are in critical condition after an articulator truck crashed head-on with a Jeep 4×4 vehicle on the Berekum-Sampa Road in the Bono Region.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that the victims, who have yet to be identified, were admitted to the Berekum Holy Family Hospital.

The crash happened between 1900 hours and 2000 hours on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, when the driver of the articulator truck, with registration number BA 1818-15, loaded with cashew nuts and travelling to Sampa, attempted to drive behind a faulty tipper truck parked in the middle of the road.

In the process, the truck collided head-on with the Land Rover vehicle with registration GR 9547-14, which was coming from the opposite direction, Abdul Rahman Fuseini, the truck driver’s mate, told the GNA.

Mr. Joseph Nkrumah, the Berekum branch secretary of the Cargo Union branch of the Progressive Transport Owners Association of Ghana, told the GNA that the road had since been cleared to facilitate the movement of vehicles.

Government must prioritise dualisation of Accra-Kumasi Highway – Asenso-Boakye

Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye

The Ranking Member of the Local Government Committee and Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has appealed to the government to prioritise the completion of the Accra-Kumasi Highway dualisation project in 2025.

Speaking during the budget debate in Parliament, the former Minister for Roads and Highways described the highway as Ghana’s most critical economic corridor, serving over 10 million Ghanaians and facilitating trade between the southern and northern regions.

He noted that while past interventions had significantly reduced travel time, neglect, congestion, and rising vehicle numbers had reversed the progress made, with journey durations increasing from 2.5 hours to 5.5 hours.

“A 2001 study warned that unless critical sections of this highway were dualised, our economy would suffer. Between 2002 and 2008, rehabilitation and dualisation efforts reduced travel time from 6–7 hours to just 2.5 hours. However, because of delays in completing the project, travel time has now ballooned back to 5.5 hours, severely impacting trade and productivity,” he lamented.

Mr Asenso-Boakye provided a detailed status update on the 240km highway, saying 100km had been dualised, 46km is currently under construction and 94km remains untouched

He cautioned that if urgent action was not taken, the road would not withstand the next two rainy seasons, leading to even higher maintenance costs in the future.

He urged Parliament and the government to commit funding in the 2025 budget to ensure the highway’s completion.

The Bantama MP further emphasised that previous investments had demonstrated the transformative power of strategic road infrastructure, citing successful bypasses constructed under different administrations:

He mentioned that the Nsawam, Kyebi, and Nkawkaw bypasses constructed under President Kufuor significantly eased congestion, and the Tetteh Quarshie-Peduasi and Kasoa dualisations boosted economic growth before Ghana even discovered oil.

“Under President Akufo-Addo, four major bypasses—Osino, Anyinam, Enyiresi, and Konongo were initiated, but these remain unfinished. The Accra-Takoradi Highway must also be prioritised,” he said.

Asenso-Boakye also highlighted the economic importance of the Accra-Takoradi Highway, which serves as a key commercial and tourism corridor.

The road connects Accra to Cape Coast and Elmina—home to UNESCO World Heritage sites—and extends to Takoradi, a hub for the oil and gas industry.

He acknowledged that the Akufo-Addo administration had begun the Kasoa-Winneba dualisation, with plans to extend it to Takoradi, but urged the government to accelerate work to unlock the region’s full economic potential.

“This is not just about reducing travel time it is about enhancing trade, tourism, and industrial growth. We cannot afford further delays,” he stressed.

Beyond the Accra-Kumasi and Accra-Takoradi highways, Hon. Asenso-Boakye called for the completion of 13 ongoing urban interchanges to tackle severe traffic congestion in major cities. He warned that daily productivity losses in Accra alone run into millions of cedis due to gridlock and high transport costs.

Black Stars depart for Morocco ahead of Madagascar game

The Black Stars have set off for Morocco as they prepare to face Madagascar in their next 2026 World Cup qualifier on Monday, March 24, 2025, at 7 pm.

After six winless games, the team put Chad to the sword on Friday, March 21, 2025, beating them 5-0 to pick up vital points to bolster their quest for a spot at the 2026 World Cup.

With no injuries sustained in the game against Chad, all 23 players are on board the plane to Morocco.

However, unlike Madagascar, the Black Stars have just one day to prepare for the game—a situation that doesn’t sit well with head coach Otto Addo, who expressed his frustration to the media after his side’s victory over Chad.

“It’s worrying that we have to play Madagascar barely two days after the Chad game. Sometimes I really don’t understand,” he told reporters.

Addo, however, hopes his team can make the most of the day’s rest to get their fitness levels back on track before facing Madagascar.

The crucial win sent the Black Stars to the top of the standings with 12 points, two ahead of Madagascar.

I Will Abdicate the Throne If He Elevates Fiapre — Dormaahene Fires Back at Asantehene’s Power Move

0

According to a report by Ghanaweb, the traditional disagreement between the Dormaahene and the Asantehene has taken a new turn following recent remarks by Osagyefo Dr. Agyemang Badu II.

Speaking on March 21, 2025, the Dormaahene openly pushed back against Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s decision to raise the Fiapre Traditional Council to the level of paramountcy.

This move has stirred deeper conversations around who holds authority over traditional matters in certain parts of Ghana.

During his media interaction, Dormaahene did not mince words. He made his position very clear and issued a bold challenge to the Asantehene.

In his own words, he said, “I challenge the Asantehene Otumfuo, as the Dormaahene and Bono president, that if he elevates the Fiapre stool to paramountcy, I will abdicate the throne given to me by the Bono people on that very day.”

This strong statement shows the seriousness of the matter from his point of view and underlines his belief that the Asantehene is stepping outside his authority.

This reaction came just days after the Asantehene, during a meeting held by the Asanteman Council on March 17, 2025, had announced his intentions to elevate four traditional councils to paramount status, including Fiapre.

In that meeting, the Asantehene firmly stated his position, saying, “Nkyeraa is mine, Menye is mine. No one other than myself can elevate them. They are all mine. I will elevate those councils in Bono and Ahafo this year.”

However, Dormaahene believes otherwise. In response to that statement, he asked a pointed question: “How can you make such a pronouncement while I am still alive?

As for that, Asantehene, you cannot do it. What authority do you have as a manhene [chief of Asanteman]?” He firmly believes that the Asantehene does not have the power to elevate a stool that falls outside his traditional area.

This ongoing issue has not just started. The Dormaahene has long argued that even though Otumfuo is recognized as a paramount chief under Ghana’s constitution, it does not give him the right to create another paramount chief.

The matter of the Fiapre stool adds more tension to this issue, especially because the Fiapre Traditional Council reportedly reached out to the Asanteman for elevation after they failed to achieve it through the Bono House of Chiefs. Sources say this decision began under the leadership of their late chief, Nana Poku.

Adwoa Safo’s suspension due to infringement on Party’s constitutional rights – Haruna Mohammed

0

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has explained that former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, was referred to the party’s disciplinary committee not for defending herself but for making statements that violated the party’s constitutional rights.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, March 22, Haruna Mohammed stressed the importance of handling internal party matters discreetly.

“As a party, you need to have intelligence in the sense that you need to be able to predict what happens. You need to understand that people’s sentiments might get out of hand, and you need to have caution.

“That is why the General Secretary issued a directive to all party members, including himself, to refrain not just from discussing but from engaging in any media discussions on certain internal matters,” he stated.

His remarks follow the NPP’s decision to refer Adwoa Safo to its National Disciplinary Committee over her public comments on the party’s performance in the 2024 elections.

In response, Adwoa Safo rejected the referral, arguing that the directive preventing members from discussing internal matters publicly was unconstitutional and infringed on her right to free speech.

Haruna Mohammed, however, maintained that while she had the right to defend herself, her statements must be made with caution.

Present school feeding audit report to ORAL committee

Franklin Cudjoe is the Founding President of IMANI Africa Franklin Cudjoe is the Founding President of IMANI Africa

Imani Africa’s Franklin Cudjoe has encouraged Sarah Adwoa Safo to present the audit of the school feeding program to the ORAL Committee.

Sarah Adwoa Safo, while speaking on Accra-based Movement Radio, disclosed that she discovered several ills in the school feeding program.

“The rot and corruption in the school feeding sector is serious. This government should pay attention to it. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor had a great vision for the programme, but the way it has been twisted is a serious matter,” she stated in an interview on Movement TV.

Recounting her experience as gender minister, she claimed that President Akufo-Addo initially instructed her to audit the programme before funds would be released.

According to her, the majority of the corruption was traced to the Central Region, but when she submitted her audit report, the president allegedly denied asking for it and ordered her to set it aside.

“That’s where my problems began,” she revealed, suggesting that exposing the mismanagement led to her falling out with the government.

But in a post on Facebook, Franklin Cudjoe urged the former lawmaker to provide the ORAL committee with the audit report in order for persons involved in any form of ills to be investigated and brought to book.

“Hon. Adwoa Safo has, in her possession, properly audited report of how the fund for school feeding was raided by assigns of the previous government. Gagging her is unfair. I will urge Hon. Adwoa Safo to share the audit report with the ORAL team,” he said.

Mahama Brought Bad Luck With Constant Fire Outbreaks, He Should Resign – Trader in Adum Cries

0

A trader in Adum in Kumasi who lost her wares in the recent fire outbreak has called for President Mahama to step down from the Presidency.

Speaking in distressed tones following the recent fire that led her to lose everything, the trader claimed that Mahama had brought bad luck to the country.

The trader alleged that since President Mahama took over, fire outbreaks have occurred in multiple locations, particularly markets, across the country.

She expressed a belief that these outbreaks are the result of President Mahama being a bad omen.

She called for the President to resign to ensure that traders like her stop suffering from fire outbreaks.

Social media users dragged the woman for being tribalistic in response to her claims in the video.

The Ashanti Region remains the opposition NPP’s stronghold where many people have a deep-seated animosity against the NDC, and netizens called that out.

Swedru Secondary School to introduce Japanese studies

0

Swedru Secondary School (SWESCO) is set to introduce the teaching and learning of the Japanese language.

The announcement was made by the school’s headmistress, Golda Esi Andam, during the institution’s 66th-anniversary celebration on Saturday, March 22.

In her speech, Mrs. Andam stated the importance of language acquisition in today’s interconnected world and expressed optimism that with the necessary support, the Japanese language would soon become a reality.

Addressing dignitaries, staff, students, and alumni at the event, Mrs. Andam highlighted the school’s commitment to equipping students with diverse linguistic skills.

She noted that SWESCO already offers courses in English, French, Fante, and Twi, and that adding Japanese would provide students with even broader linguistic and cultural exposure.

“We need other laboratories. We need an agric laboratory and also a language laboratory. We are into English, French, Fanti, and Twi. Very soon, we will start with Japanese because the new curriculum encourages learning of other languages if you have the resources.”

Another major concern raised by Mrs. Andam was the school’s lack of internet access, which she said has affected both teaching and learning.

She lamented that the school’s Wi-Fi services had been disrupted due to the collapse of its mast, leaving students and teachers without reliable internet access.

“We had a Wi-Fi connectivity, but due to our fallen mast, unfortunately, that service is no more there and we need that because this is an institution that runs an elective ICT and we have many of the students who read elective ICT.”

Ghana Police Service should pick him up, he knows those behind the Fire Outbreak

0

A recent social media exchange has sparked controversy, drawing attention to remarks made by Abass Nurudeen, the Chief Executive Officer of the Social Investment Fund (SIF), regarding the devastating fire outbreak in Adum. His comments have triggered sharp criticism, particularly from Akaneweo Kabiru Abdul, who has raised serious concerns about the implications of his statements.

Akaneweo Kabiru Abdul took to Facebook to express his discontent with Nurudeen’s remarks, questioning how a government appointee, whose salary is funded by taxpayers, could make such a statement without taking responsibility. He described Nurudeen’s comments as a display of “ignorance and unseriousness,” arguing that individuals entrusted with leadership roles must exercise sound judgment, especially when addressing national issues. Abdul questioned how someone who allegedly possesses information about those responsible for the fire could simply make claims without taking steps to ensure justice is served.

He further called on the Ghana Police Service to take action, suggesting that if Nurudeen truly knows the individuals behind the tragic incident, then he should be invited for questioning. “Ghana Police Service should pick him up, Since he knows those that caused the Fire outbreak,” Akaneweo stated. He emphasized that in a country where accountability is paramount, such statements cannot be taken lightly. He warned against reducing serious national crises to mere social media banter, especially when lives and livelihoods are affected.

The fire outbreak in Adum has left many businesses and properties in ruins, with victims calling for thorough investigations to determine the cause. While authorities continue their probe, Nurudeen’s claim of knowing those responsible has only fueled public anger. Many Ghanaians have since taken to social media to demand clarity on the matter.

As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on whether Nurudeen will provide evidence to back his claims or whether law enforcement agencies will step in to investigate his remarks further. The public continues to await official updates on both the fire outbreak and any potential actions against those allegedly involved.

IGP promises to address pending police promotions, welfare issues

0

By Gifty Amofa/ Eric Appah Marfo

Accra, March 22, GNA — Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has assured personnel of the Police Administration’s readiness to address all pending petitions regarding promotions and welfare, once the Police Council is constituted.

He said outstanding cases would be referred for consideration, reaffirming his commitment to officers’ professional growth and well-being.

The IGP gave the assurance on Friday during a Regional Police Commanders’ Conference in Accra.

The event brought together regional police commanders from across the country to assess past efforts, exchange ideas and strategise for the future.

Mr Yohuno  underscored the importance of prioritising officers’ well-being, including medical care, accommodation, and working conditions, noting that a motivated workforce was essential for effective security operations.

He described his appointment; the 24th IGP, as an honour and a collective responsibility, urging officers to serve with diligence and dedication.

The IGP said security must be “felt and not just seen,” adding that the goal of policing was to make the public feel safe and protected.

“As law enforcement officers, we operate in an era of increased public scrutiny. Every action we take will be examined, and our legitimacy will be tested. We must, therefore, remain professional, transparent, and committed to upholding the highest standards of policing,” he said.

Mr Yohuno identified illegal mining, the prolonged Bawku conflict, and increasing violent attacks on mobile money vendors as key security concerns requiring immediate attention.

On illegal mining, he noted that armed criminals had carried out brutal attacks on innocent people, particularly in forest reserves and mining communities.

He declared a “war on crimes related to illegal mining,” directing regional commanders to take decisive action against the perpetrators.

The Bawku conflict presented significant national security implications, Mr Yohuno said,  and urged officers to apply their experience in conflict resolution to restore peace in the area.

He condemned the rising cases of violent attacks on mobile money vendors, which sometimes resulted in the loss of innocent lives and called for innovative crime-fighting strategies to combat such incidents.

“Criminals must not be allowed to outmaneuver law enforcement,” the IGP said.

He cited corruption, police intimidation, excessive use of force and procedural injustice as some issues which undermined public trust in the Service.

He urged regional commanders to take deliberate steps to address those concerns and urged all officers to remain steadfast in their commitment to serving Ghana with integrity, professionalism, and dedication.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Dr David Agyeman Adjem, Director-General of Administration, called on regional commanders to embrace innovation, strengthen community engagement, and lead with integrity.

He said Ghana’s changing security landscape required a more agile, technologically advanced and community-focused police force to meet rising public expectations.

Dr Adjem urged commanders to take ownership of crime-fighting strategies and ensure criminals had “no refuge, no opportunity, and no loopholes to exploit.”

He highlighted the importance of public trust in law enforcement, noting that policing was not just about enforcement but about relationships.

“If we are to build a safer Ghana, we must build stronger bridges between the police and the people. The reactivation and reorientation of our police-public relations officers is a step in this direction. When citizens trust the police, they share information. When they feel respected, they cooperate,” he said.

“When they believe we are here to serve them, they support us. That trust cannot be demanded, it must be earned through transparency, through professionalism, and through fairness and equity.”

He lauded the reactivation and reorientation of police-public relations offices as a step in the right direction towards improving community engagement.

Dr Adjem called for investments in modern policing technology and stronger international law enforcement partnerships to enhance the country’s security framework.

The DCOP urged the commanders to leave the conference inspired with the determination to serve, protect and lead.

GH¢6.2 bn worth of excavators are imported into the country – Lands Minister

0

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has revealed that excavators imported into Ghana are valued at GH¢6.2 billion, ranking among the country’s top three highest imports.

Speaking on JoyNews’ on Saturday, March 22, Mr. Kofi Buah underscored the need for stricter regulation and oversight of excavator usage, particularly in the mining and construction sectors.

“We must ensure that every excavator entering the country is properly tracked, has a legitimate purpose, and that we can pinpoint its exact location 24 hours a day,” he emphasised.

According to the minister, the initiative aims to curb illegal mining activities and ensure excavators are used for lawful purposes.

He further disclosed that his ministry is working closely with the Minerals Commission, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the Ministry of Transport to strengthen monitoring and management mechanisms.

“Starting from the port, we are working with DVLA and others. I have had the first discussion with the Minister of Transport because we believe that other agencies must be part of this whole exercise,” he explained.

Mr. Kofi Buah assured that proposals are under review to develop an effective tracking system that will include digital monitoring mechanisms and inter-agency cooperation.

The goal, he noted, is to ensure transparency and accountability at every stage of excavator importation, registration, and use.

“We must make sure that any excavator imported into the country is tracked, has a purpose, and we know exactly where they are 24 hours a day,” he reiterated.

A 14-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student has lost both forearms, hands and one leg due to electrical burns while holding a wire in a television set.

The incident occurred on Christmas day last year when the boy (name withheld), a resident of Hobor, a local community in Accra, came into contact with the wire from the television in his home.

A powerful electric current is said to have surged through his body, causing him to lose consciousness.

Emergency responders transported him to the Kwameanu Ashalajah Hospital, where he regained consciousness with severe burn injuries.

Due to the extent of his condition, he was later transferred to the Amasaman Hospital where he was referred to the National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre (NRPSBC) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on January 1, 2025.

Despite the efforts of doctors and nurses at the centre, the severity of the burns left no option but to amputate his limbs to prevent further complications.

Recovery efforts

In a show of compassion, an Indian philanthropic group, Maa Sherawaali, donated GH¢25,000 to support the boy’s medical treatment and upkeep, easing his family’s financial burden.

The group has also pledged continued assistance as he navigates the challenges ahead.

Currently, a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists and educators are working together to support his rehabilitation.

He is undergoing training to write with his leg and is gradually adapting to his new reality.

Doctors say the boy is now in stable condition and communicating well.

He is expected to undergo a final surgical procedure in May, which will involve skin grafting to cover the amputated areas and the fitting of artificial limbs to aid mobility.

Ghana does not belong to Mahama or NDC – Kwesi Pratt loses cool over political appointments

Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper Kwesi Pratt Jr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr, has condemned politically induced appointments at all levels.

Speaking to the trend which is gaining widespread attention and acceptance on Pan African TV on March 22, 2025, he described the trend as anti-national and stupid.

“The new trend I’m seeing on social media of late is that national assignments are being given based on political links. And you’ll see a tall list of openings being tagged available to party affiliates. What nonsense is that? That is anti-national and stupid.” he said.

He stated that it brewed retaliation from opposition parties and denied ordinary eligible professionals job opportunities.

“Should the NPP ever come to power, I’m sure even if you’re medical professional, you’ll have to present your party card to get a job placement,” he said.

He described the emerging trend as bad precedence, declaring that the country is for all Ghanaians, hence people are expected to gain employment should they decide to remain apolitical.

“What is happening in this country? We are one people with one destiny. So, the people who are not aligned to any party, are they not Ghanaians?

“Ghana does not belong to John Mahama and the NDC. What happens at the polls is just to elect people who can manage the country and it ends there. We must apply the same level of discipline and principle in our fight against illegal mining,” he added.

Declining T-Bill rates pose threat to foreign exchange stability and cedi depreciation

0

Interest rates for treasury bills continue to drop Interest rates for treasury bills continue to drop

Professor Peter Quartey, Director, of the Institute of Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER), has raised serious concerns over the declining Treasury Bills (T-Bills) rates.

He said the decline had a potential impact on foreign exchange stability and the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

He expressed these concerns in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency.

Professor Quartey cautioned that the current trend is unsustainable and could exacerbate the country’s economic challenges if not addressed promptly.

The warning comes when the Central Bank prepares to announce the new interest rate at the next Monetary Policy Committee Meeting.

The reduction in T-bill rates from 16.93 to 15.88 per cent has raised concerns among investors and market watchers over its impact on the exchange rate.

Professor Quartey highlighted that the sharp decline in T-Bill rates had led to a shift in investor behaviour, with many opting to divest from local bonds and treasury instruments in favour of holding foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar.

“If we are not careful, this artificial decline in T-Bill rates will put pressure on our foreign exchange reserves. People are already buying dollars and stopping investments in local instruments. This will only worsen the cedi’s depreciation,” he stated.

The ISSER Director pointed out that the current fixed deposit rate of 10 per cent, in comparison to the soaring inflation rate of 23 per cent, made it unattractive for investors to keep their funds in local currency.

“Why would anyone invest in a 10 per cent fixed deposit when inflation is at 23 per cent? It doesn’t make sense. People are naturally seeking safer havens for their money, and this is causing a currency substitution problem,” he said.

Professor Quartey also expressed concern over the broader implications of the trend for monetary policy and economic stability.

He noted that the decline in T-Bill rates could create significant challenges for the Bank of Ghana and the government.

“If investors continue to sell off local bonds and treasury bills, it will become increasingly difficult for the government to raise the needed funds to support critical sectors of the economy,” he said.

The economist further emphasised the need for a diversified approach to economic management, including a focus on gold and other export commodities to mitigate political and economic shocks.

“We need to revise our export retention schemes and ensure that we are not overly reliant on a single source of revenue. Diversification is key to sustaining growth and stability,” he said.

Following Ghana’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, President John Dramani Mahama expressed his delight, revealing that the win restored his appetite after earlier concerns about the emotional toll of watching the Black Stars play.

Before the match, Mahama had shared that he was advised to eat before watching the game due to the stress football brings him.

However, after witnessing the dominant display by Otto Addo’s men, he was in high spirits.

“I had a good appetite for dinner after the Black Stars’ 5-0 victory. Congrats, guys!” he posted, celebrating the crucial win.

Despite the resounding result, Mahama urged the team to remain focused and not become complacent, emphasizing that the victory should be the start of rebuilding the connection between the team and Ghanaians.

“Let this victory not make us complacent. This should be the beginning of bringing back the LOVE,” he added.

With Ghana now leading Group I, attention turns to the next crucial fixture against Madagascar on Monday in Morocco.

Mahama and millions of Ghanaians will be hoping for another strong performance to edge the Black Stars closer to securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Niger declares three days of mourning after attack on a Mosque kills 44

The military-run government of Niger frequently fights armed groups in the region The military-run government of Niger frequently fights armed groups in the region

The government of Niger has declared three days of mourning following an attack on a mosque in the country’s southwest that killed at least 44 people.

The victims were killed in a “savage” armed assault in the Fambita quarter of the rural border town of Kokorou, the interior ministry said in a statement broadcast on state television on Friday.

The ministry said another 13 people were wounded.

West Africa’s Sahel region has seen an uptick in violence in recent years following the rise of armed fighters linked to the al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS) armed groups that took over territory in north Mali after the 2012 Tuareg rebellion.

Since then, it has spread into neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso, and more recently into the north of coastal West African countries such as Togo and Ghana.

Niger’s interior ministry said the latest attack occurred early in the afternoon as people were attending a prayer service at the mosque during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

“The heavily armed terrorists surrounded the mosque to carry out their massacre with unusual cruelty,” it said, adding that the attackers also set fire to a local market and homes.

The defence ministry blamed the attack on the Islamic State in the Great Sahara, or EIGS, an affiliate of ISIL, in a statement late on Friday.

EIGS had no immediate reaction to the allegation. Previous attacks in Niger were claimed by al-Qaeda affiliate groups.

The government has promised to hunt down the perpetrators and put them on trial.

The military-run government of Niger frequently fights armed groups in the region, and civilians are often victims of the violence.

Since July 2023, at least 2,400 people have been killed in Niger, according to the database of ACLED, a non-governmental organisation that gives armed conflict location and event data.

Across the greater Sahel region that encompasses several countries, hundreds of thousands more have been killed and millions displaced as armed groups attack towns and villages as well as government security outposts.

The failure of governments to restore security contributed to two coups in Mali, two in Burkina Faso and one in Niger between 2020 and 2023. All three remain under military rule despite regional and international pressure to hold elections.

Since the coups, authorities have turned away from traditional Western allies and have sought military support from Russia instead.

“Go Away, We Don’t Want You Here” — Ghanaian Youth in Ashanti Jeer at Mahama’s Visit

0

GHOne TV reported that as former President John Dramani Mahama passed through a gathering in the Ashanti Region, a crowd of young Ghanaians voiced their discontent, chanting, “Go away! We don’t want you here!” The reaction reflected a growing sense of frustration and disillusionment, particularly among young voters who traditionally support the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

More than just an objection to Mahama’s visit, the protest signified broader dissatisfaction with Ghana’s political leadership and the persistent failure to fulfill promises.

“We’ve heard it all before,” one young man said. “Mahama was in office, and yet our struggles remain the same. What’s different this time?” Others echoed his frustration, criticizing the lack of real progress during Mahama’s tenure.

As Mahama attempted to engage with the crowd, his message was drowned out by continued chanting and disapproval. “I want to hear your concerns,” he said. “Let’s work together to build a better Ghana.” However, many in the audience dismissed his remarks as empty political rhetoric.

“Every election, you promise jobs, education, and better healthcare, but here in Ashanti, nothing changes,” a young woman shouted in response.

The anger stems from persistent problems such as high unemployment, a lack of opportunities, and slow economic development. While the Ashanti Region has historically leaned toward the NPP, many young people feel neglected, with little improvement in their quality of life.

As Mahama’s convoy moved forward, a few supporters attempted to calm tensions and call for unity. However, the dissatisfaction among the youth remained strong, signaling mounting pressure on Ghana’s leaders to take meaningful steps toward addressing their concerns before the next elections.

Free SHS policy has come to stay

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has reiterated the Mahama administration’s commitment to sustaining and improving the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, emphasizing efforts to enhance funding and quality.

Speaking as the guest of honor at the 66th anniversary of Swedru Secondary School on Saturday, March 22, Dr. Forson announced plans to amend the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Act to allocate a portion of the fund specifically to support Free SHS.

“Nananom, the Free SHS Policy has come to stay. Free Senior High School has come to stay. President John Dramani Mahama said I should tell you that free education, Free SHS has come to stay,” he declared.

Dr. Forson acknowledged two major challenges affecting the programme—sustainability and quality—and assured that the government is taking steps to address them. He emphasized that adequate funds would be allocated for student accommodation, logistics, and feeding.

“However, there are two challenges that face the implementation of free secondary education. The first is how sustainable the Free SHS should be managed, and the second is the quality of the free SHS education.

“The government would ensure that the funds for the accommodation, logistics, and feeding of students. President said I should inform you that the arrears owed to the Ghana Education Trust Fund for the past 8 years have been paid, as stated in the 2025 budget,” he stated.

Dr. Forson further disclosed that the 2025 allocation for GETFund stands at GHC4.1 billion, with an additional GHC9 billion expected this year. He assured that amendments to the GETFund Act would prevent future diversions of funds, ensuring sustained support for Free SHS.

“The 2025 allocation for Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) is GHC4.1 billion, and this year, it will receive GHC9 billion. We will amend the Ghana Education Trust Fund Act to prevent the government from diverting these funds, ensuring that a portion is used specifically for Free SHS.”

Additionally, he assured parents and students that food supplies in schools would see significant improvements under the new administration.

“Parents, students, President Mahama said I should assure you that the feed will improve this time round.”

“They Threw Dust Into the Air” – Prof. Gyampo Alleges Plot to Sabotage His Nomination

0

Professor Ransford Gyampo has claimed that the “Sex for Grades” allegations against him were part of a deliberate scheme to tarnish his reputation and prevent his selection as a running mate as reported by MyNewsGH.

Speaking in an interview on 3FM, he insisted that the accusations lacked merit and were strategically crafted to damage his credibility at a crucial time.

According to him, his nomination was opposed by someone close to the person considering him for the position, leading to a plot to discredit him.

“I was the one selected to be a running mate, but someone around the person opposed it. To prevent that, they threw dust into the air so that by the time it settled, the person proposing me would change their mind,” he revealed.

Professor Gyampo maintained that there was no evidence to support the allegations, adding that he was never caught engaging in any misconduct.

He emphasized that due process cleared his name, and he was reinstated and later promoted at the university.

Following the incident, he noted that those who believed in his innocence continued to support him. “My people believed I was unnecessarily framed, and that’s why they voted for me twice in elections after the incident,” he stated.

Despite the challenges, he has chosen to move forward, drawing lessons from the experience rather than dwelling on past events.

We will not interfere in management of universities – Minister

0

Accra, March 22, GNA – Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has indicated government’s commitment to giving the management and councils of public universities the freehand to operate.

He said government placed high premium on academic freedom and regarded external interferences in universities as a threat to that freedom.

“I want to assure you that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, supported by his Vice President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, a former vice-chancellor herself, and a highly experienced academic, is firmly committed to empowering university councils and management to perform their statutory duties without interference.”

The Minister gave the assurance in a speech read on his behalf at the Second Session of the Third Congregation of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), in Accra, on Friday.

The event saw the University confer a Master of Philosophies (Mphil) and Master of Arts (MA) degree on 205 students; comprising 116 females and 89 males.

Mr Iddrisu expressed government’s commitment to empowering academic boards and management of the various public universities to enable them to perform their duties legitimately.

He, however, warned that the Ministry would not hesitate to hold them accountable for non-performance or illegitimate actions.

The Minister commended the Management of UniMAC for its commitment to upholding excellence and for incorporating research as a key area of study.

The  government attached high importance to research functions because they were critical for the country’s development, he said, and promised to operationalise the Ghana National Research Fund Act (Act 1056).

Passed by Parliament in 2020, the Act is designed to provide sustainable financial support for research activities in universities and research institutions.

The Minister said plans were far advanced to have it operationalised to support research activities in the various universities.

“Management structures are being put in place with seed money from GETFund to ensure that the national research fund becomes operational this year.”

He assured the Management of UniMAC of government’s continued support to enable it to train professionals capable of competing both locally and internationally with their peers.

Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, the Vice-Chancellor, UniMAC, said as an institution, it remained committed to equipping graduates with the skills necessary for the 21st century economy.

“Moreover, our alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reinforces our commitment to quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), industry innovation (SDG 9), and reduced inequalities (SDG 10),” he said.

“Through research, policy advocacy, and academic excellence, we remain steadfast in shaping a future where education is the bridge to prosperity.”

Prof Mensah stressed the need for infrastructural expansion, improved student welfare, and enhanced faculty development, appealing to the government to provide support to the school to enable it to achieve that objective.

He urged the graduands to be resilient, adapt to the ever-changing job market and continue to learn to make the impact they desired.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, a Development Communication postgraduate student, Mr James Amoh Junior, described the academic journey as both “transformative and enlightening.”

He said the course provided a deeper understanding of the intersection between communication and sustainable development, equipping students with the tools to drive social change through strategic messaging and storytelling.

“This experience has reshaped the way I approach journalism and communication. It has deepened my commitment to using my platform not just to inform, but to influence policies and empower communities,” he said.

My talented team will fix Ghana’s economy – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has defended the capabilities of the individuals he has appointed to serve in his administration, stating that they are young, talented, and determined to guide Ghana through its current economic crisis.

According to the President, his team is fully committed to tackling the economic challenges head-on and working towards the country’s transformation.

Speaking during a visit to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, President Mahama assured the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II, of his unwavering commitment to Ghana’s development.

He acknowledged the difficulties the nation is currently facing but expressed confidence in his administration’s ability to address these issues with competence and dedication.

In his remarks, President Mahama acknowledged that while political campaigns and winning elections are significant, they are the easier part of leadership.

The real test, he stated, lies in delivering on the promises made to the people and addressing the pressing economic hardships that have burdened citizens across the country.

“Campaigns and elections are easy. The more difficult part is how to meet the challenge that is facing us especially now that our country is in a deep economic crisis. How we work to meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people and eliminate the hardship that they are facing is the task that we are currently confronted with.

“The task is a difficult one but we have assembled a team of young and talented members of my administration who are capable of helping me to steer the affairs of this country to enormous success.”

We’ll build bridges between Anglophone and Francophone communities

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has affirmed Ghana’s commitment to leveraging its full membership in the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) to strengthen ties between Anglophone and Francophone African communities.

Speaking at La Francophonie’s 55th anniversary flag-raising ceremony in Accra, he emphasized Ghana’s dedication to the shared values of democracy, human rights, cultural diversity, and sustainable development.

“Ghana, under the leadership of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, intends to use her new status with the OIF to promote the values and principles that bind us together,” Mr. Ablakwa stated. “We reaffirm our commitment to building bridges between Ghana and Anglophone and Francophone communities.”

He highlighted Ghana’s efforts toward regional peace and stability and reiterated the nation’s unwavering commitment to fostering democratic governance, human rights, and sustainable development.

Given the prevailing regional and global political climate, he stressed the urgency of promoting these ideals.

“Indeed, in the context of our current regional and global landscape, the promotion of these ideals has become even more imperative,” he remarked.

Mr. Ablakwa also acknowledged the contributions that facilitated Ghana’s attainment of full membership status in the OIF. He extended appreciation to Ambassador Thai Hong Mai, the West African Representative of the OIF, along with her team and member states, for their support in this achievement. Ghana officially attained full membership in October 2024.

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Maher Kheir, Ambassador of Lebanon and President of the Group of Francophonie Ambassadors, described Ghana’s accomplishment as a testament to its commitment to bilingualism, cooperation, and active engagement with the Francophone world.

“More than ever, Ghana is poised to play a key role in ECOWAS and regional diplomacy, bridging the gap between English-speaking and French-speaking African countries,” he noted.

Interior minister to face Parliament over ‘raid’ on former Bank of Ghana Governor’s home

0

Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of the Interior Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of the Interior

Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister of the Interior, is set to appear before Parliament to provide details on the alleged search warrant executed at the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

This follows an alleged raid on Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home on Wednesday, March 19 by heavily armed National Security operatives, which has raised concerns about due process and the motives behind the operation.

Members of Parliament (MPs), particularly from the New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus, have called for full disclosure on the legality and justification for the raid, insisting that Parliament must hold the government accountable for the actions of security agencies.

The Interior minister is expected to clarify the basis for the search warrant and the allegations leading to the operation.

However, Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga has defended the operation, saying it was not a raid but rather a properly executed search warrant carried out in accordance with the law. “Mr. Speaker, law enforcement officers lawfully went there to conduct a search, and it is perfectly lawful. And so, using the word raid is clearly wrong,” he said.

Meanwhile, a new date for the Minister’s appearance is yet to be announced, after Ayariga revealed that the Interior minister will not be available on Tuesday, March 25.

The Interior Minister’s appearance before Parliament is expected to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the alleged raid.

According to the reports armed men, approximately 20 in number, allegedly led by Mr. Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, raided the private residence of the former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Addison, on Wednesday, March 19.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the heavily armed officers allegedly disabled the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system before searching the house.

Reports indicated that the heavily armed men, some allegedly wearing balaclavas and wielding AK-47 semi-automatic rifles, demanded that Dr. Addison led them to the “vaults” in his house.

However, Dr. Addison allegedly informed them that he had no vaults or cache of cash at home. Despite this, the security personnel allegedly ransacked the house, disabling the CCTV system beforehand.

According to eyewitnesses, no vaults were found, and no large amounts of cash were discovered.

The security personnel eventually left allegedly with the CCTV monitor and control unit.

Dr. Addison, his wife, and their family are reportedly traumatised following the raid.

The NPP will shine again

0

Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to learn from its mistakes, reunite, and prepare for a stronger comeback in the 2028 general elections.

In a post on his X handle on March 21, 2025, Osei urged the party to focus on self-improvement and unity, stating that opportunities should be taken advantage of.

“NPP, remember opportunities don’t go to waste. They just go to other people!! Let’s work on our mistakes, reunite, and bounce back stronger!” Osei wrote.

He also described the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as “brothers” rather than enemies and expressed optimism about the emergence of a new generation of leaders within the NPP.

“NDC is not our enemies but brothers; they will do what they can do in these 4 years!! But in 2028, a new breed of young bloods are emerging for exceptional leadership with national patriotism!! We will shine again!!!” he added.

Osei’s comments come following what some people have described as turbulence within the party after a series of interviews by former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, accusing the party of unfair treatment against her and some other members.

Summon Akufo-Addo to disciplinary committee for Afoko, Agyepong exits

0

Edward Ennin is a former Obuasi East MP Edward Ennin is a former Obuasi East MP

A former Member of Parliament for Obuasi East, Edward Michael Ennin, has called for the summoning of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the disciplinary committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He expressed the view that the former president allegedly orchestrated the removal of key figures from the party, including Paul Afoko, a former national chairman, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former general secretary.

Speaking on Asempa FM on Saturday, March 22, 2025, Ennin stated that Akufo-Addo should be the one summoned before the committee for investigation and possible punishment regarding how these individuals were removed from the party, rather than the party attempting to silence disgruntled members.

“Is this not the same party where some of the leaders like Akufo-Addo orchestrated the sacking of Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong? The manner in which they sacked these people wasn’t right but why haven’t they addressed that issue? They should also summon Akufo-Addo to the disciplinary committee to answer for how they used the constitution to sack these people. The way they sacked them was it right?” he lamented.

The former lawmaker expressed regret over the loss of some founding and prominent figures from the party.

He urged the party leadership to rise above greediness and avoid causing pain to its members in their efforts to serve and remain loyal to an individual.

He stated that such actions could further deepen the divisions within the party and drive more people away.

“No one is bigger in the party than others. Today we have lost all our leaders. The likes of Wereko-Brobbey and Kwame Mpianim toiled for this party but because of Akufo-Addo, all these people have been driven away from the party. Are we serving one person or what?”.

Edward Ennin was making a submission regarding the NPP’s decision to refer the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, to the disciplinary committee for what the party describes as exhibiting anti-party conduct.

Meanwhile, Paul Afoko, who served as the NPP’s national chairman from April 2014, faced suspension in October 2015 alongside General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong and Second Vice Chairperson Sammy Crabbe.

The party cited actions deemed detrimental to its political fortunes as the reason for their suspension.

‘We will build the best tolling system in Africa’

0

Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reintroducing a technologically advanced tolling system to generate revenue for road infrastructure development.

To this end, the minister has announced that Ghana will soon launch its own electronic tolling system, with the ambitious goal of establishing “the best road tolling system in Africa.”

“We are not settling for anything less than excellence,” he stated, emphasising the importance of innovation and expressing the government’s determination to dispel any doubts regarding the reintroduction of tolls.

Agbodza made these remarks in Accra on Tuesday during a courtesy call by the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hüseyin Güngör.

He noted that the ministry is currently in the process of obtaining approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) to select a transaction advisor.

“Transparency is a priority, and we welcome all capable organisations to participate in the selection process. We want the best technical and financial proposal that will enable us to operate a highly sustainable tolling system,” he stated.

The minister assured the public that his ministry would keep them informed about the progress of the tolling system’s development and the selection process for the transaction advisor.

“In a few days, the advertisement for the selection of the transaction advisor should be out. Together, we will pave the way for a brighter future in road infrastructure,” he added.

The discussions also explored opportunities for Turkish investors to contribute to the country’s road infrastructure development through the government’s flagship programme, “The Big Push.”

Mr. Agbodza further highlighted the potential for technical cooperation between the two nations and invited Turkish engineers to share their expertise in tolling systems.

“We are ready to collaborate and learn from successful models, particularly those in Turkey that utilise technology instead of traditional toll booths. Our partnership could lay a strong foundation for Ghana’s new tolling system, ensuring it is both efficient and sustainable,” he concluded.

Man Says His Girlfriend Is ‘Angry’ He’s Taking a Work Trip Without Her: ‘She Started Crying’

0

A man says that his girlfriend is mad he’s going on a work trip without her — but he’s not so sure he did anything wrong.

The 25-year-old detailed his story on the popular Reddit forum “Am I the A——?” in order to get input and advice from his fellow Redditors. In the post, the man explains that he and his 24-year-old girlfriend work remotely for the same company. However, he says that while he is interested in making the most of the opportunity and eventually moving ahead, his girlfriend has “no desire in doing more than necessary to get the minimum raise each year.” He also says that she “is living with her parents” and is “deeply in debt” due to overspending on non-essentials.

The Reddit user then goes on to explain that he “recently came up with some money” and wants to use it to travel to Canada in order to visit his company and network in person.

“[It] is something [I’m] really excited about,” he added.

However, the man says that when he told his girlfriend about his plan, “she began crying” and claimed he didn’t “care about her.” He also says she insisted that “couples should have trips together or not at all.”

The original poster (OP) says that he ultimately told his girlfriend he was “sorry about hurting her,” but he doesn’t feel the same way about solo travel. He also said that while he often helps her out financially, he cannot afford to pay for both of them to go on this trip.

“AITA? [Am I the a——?]” he concludes his post.

The man’s fellow Redditors were quick to assure him that he should not feel guilty about taking a work trip — or any trip — without his significant other.

“NTA [not the a——],” wrote one commenter.  “You are an adult, and a separate entity from her. You are allowed to travel alone wherever and whenever you want. Plus, you have catered to her financially more than is necessary. You are her boyfriend, not a parent who has to cater to her every need and not go anywhere without her.”

“NTA. I’ve been with my partner for 19 years and we travel separately often, even if it’s just a weekend away to visit family. All or nothing is not a healthy way to maintain a relationship,” added someone else.

Another person recommended that the OP think long and hard about whether his girlfriend is the right partner for him and his long-term goals.

“NTA [not the a——],” they wrote, adding, “Your girlfriend is immature and sounds insufferable. This is a work trip, not a social one for you and will help with your career. I don’t know how long you’ve been dating but this is a huge red flag. Not to mention that she can’t [even] budget her money […]. Go on the business trip and rethink your relationship while you’re away.”
