America Introduces New Test for Ghanaians and Other Nationals Who Want To Become U.S. Citizens

0

  • The US has announced that persons desirous of becoming citizens of the country will now undertake a new citizenship test
  • An immigration lawyer based in the US, who gave more insight into this, sheds light on what applicants are to expect
  • She also shared insights on what persons aged 65 and older, who have been lawfully residing in the US, must be aware of during the test

The US has introduced a new citizenship test for persons from all countries who apply to be American nationals.

This comes after the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services issued a Policy Alert announcing a revision of the Naturalisation Civics Educational Requirement.

Shedding more light on the new policy, US-based immigration lawyer Akua Aboagye, in a post on her TikTok page, indicated that the new policy will apply to all persons who file their application on October 20 or after.

Details on the citizenship text

With this change, the civics questions for the citizenship test will be increased from 100 to 128 questions.

Applicants during the test will be asked 20 questions instead of 10 and will need to answer 12 questions correctly instead of six to pass.

In this vein, officers will stop the test if an applicant answers 12 questions correctly or fails to answer nine questions incorrectly.

Despite this, the passing score remains at 60 per cent, the same standard as the 2020 test.

Also, applicants aged 65 years and older who have been lawful residents in the US will continue to take the simplified test with ten questions.

Her post concluded with an admonition for persons who apply for naturalisation on October 20 or after to prepare adequately.

“If you apply for naturalization after October 2025, the civic test will apply to you. Plan accordingly for the new version.”

New fee for DV lottery applicants

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of State has also announced that the 2027 Diversity Visa Lottery program will no longer be free.

Akua Aboagye, who offered valuable insight on this new development, indicated that the decision to change the application process for the DV Lottery was made public by the U.S. Department of State.

According to Lawyer Akua Aboagye, the new fee will cover the cost of processing entries for the program and discourage fake or speculative registrations.

The US authorities have therefore confirmed that registration for the 2027 DV Lottery is expected to open in the coming months.

At the time of writing the report, the post by the immigration lawyer had generated a lot of reactions.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and leading figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have extended their condolences to the family of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, following her passing in Accra.

The former President visited the Rawlings family in Accra to commiserate with them. He was in the company of his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, former Chief of Staff, Frema Osei Opare, former Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor, former Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, among others.

The former President described Nana Konadu as a “remarkable woman” whose legacy in women’s empowerment and national development will endure for generations.

He assured the family of his unflinching support in honouring the late former first lady.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued on Thursday, October 23, 2025, Mr Akufo-Addo said he and his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, were deeply saddened by the news of her death, noting her pivotal role as Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement.

“Her commitment to the growth of the women’s movement in Ghana and Africa can never be forgotten. She was a warm and affectionate woman, with a good sense of humour and was excellent company,” he said.

He further described Mrs. Rawlings as a “role model for women in Ghana and across Africa,” whose dedication to gender advocacy has left an indelible mark on the nation. The former President extended heartfelt sympathy to her children and family, praying for God’s comfort during this difficult period.

“Rebecca, my children and I extend our deepest condolences to her children and family on this sad occasion. May her soul rest peacefully in the bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall meet again,” Akufo-Addo stated.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra at the age of 76. She served as Ghana’s First Lady across both military and civilian administrations led by her husband, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, from 1979 to 2001.

Beyond her role as First Lady, Nana Konadu was a trailblazer in women’s empowerment and political activism. She founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, which championed women’s rights and social development, and later established the National Democratic Party (NDP).

In 2016, she made history as the first woman to contest the presidency of Ghana, cementing her place as one of the most influential female figures in the nation’s political history.

Funeral arrangements for the late former First Lady are expected to be announced by the family in due course.

Mahama announces sweeping reforms to strengthen disability rights in Ghana

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a comprehensive set of reforms aimed at modernising Ghana’s disability rights framework and promoting greater inclusion for persons with disabilities.

Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities initiative in Accra, the President unveiled plans for a new Persons with Disability Act and accompanying Legislative Instrument to update and strengthen the country’s legal regime on disability rights.

“We will introduce a Persons with Disability Act and a Legislative Instrument to modernise Ghana’s disability rights regime and ensure effective enforcement,” President Mahama said.

“This new amendment act will amend the Persons with Disability Act that was passed in 2006 in order to bring it up to date with current realities.”

The proposed legislation, he noted, will be complemented by several institutional and policy interventions designed to enhance healthcare, rehabilitation, and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

President Mahama announced the establishment of district health and resource centres across the country to provide specialised health assessments and to build a credible national health database for persons with disabilities to inform evidence-based decision-making.

In addition, the government will construct and upgrade rehabilitation centres in all regions to support physical recovery and provide vocational training for persons with disabilities.

“Every District Assembly and Municipal Assembly will establish a Disability Desk,” he added.

“These Disability Desks will integrate disability issues into the Assemblies’ development planning.”

To promote inclusive employment, President Mahama pledged to enforce a minimum 5% employment quota for persons with disabilities across both the public and private sectors.

“Private sector organisations that meet the quota will be given tax incentives,” he explained. “And every public sector institution, through their respective ministers, will have to report annually that they have met the 5% quota.”

He reaffirmed that inclusion and accessibility are central to the government’s national development agenda.

PGA Tour Cancels 2026 Season Opener in Hawaii Due To Venue Challenges

0

The PGA Tour has cancelled its 2026 season-opening tournament, The Sentry, after efforts to find an alternative venue in Hawaii or elsewhere proved unsuccessful.

Originally scheduled for January 8–11, 2026, the event was set to take place at the Plantation Course at Kapalua on the Island of Maui. However, ongoing drought conditions forced organizers to move the competition.

In a statement, the PGA Tour explained that “having assessed alternate venues in Hawaii and beyond,” the tournament could not proceed due to “logistical challenges – including shipping deadlines, tournament infrastructure, and vendor support.”

With The Sentry’s cancellation, the Sony Open, set for January 15–18 at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, will now serve as the first event of the 2026 PGA Tour season.

The Sentry, which first relocated from California to Maui in 1999, has long been a traditional season opener, featuring the top 50 players from the FedExCup standings and winners from the previous season.

It held the opening slot from 1986 to 2013 before reclaiming that position in 2024 when the Tour returned to a calendar-year format.

Interior Minister, Acting Defence Minister must be summoned over Gbinyiri and Sampa clashes

0

The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has called for the Minister for the Interior and the Acting Minister for Defence to be summoned before Parliament over recent violent disturbances in Gbinyiri and Sampa.

The conflict in Gbinyiri, which stems from a long-standing land dispute, has forced over 13,000 Ghanaians to flee into neighbouring Ivory Coast, while in Sampa, violent clashes left a police officer and seven others injured.

Raising the issue on the floor of Parliament on Friday, October 24, Reverend Ntim Fordjour said it would be highly irresponsible for the House to remain indifferent to such crises that have displaced thousands and endangered lives.

“The conflict that took place in Gbinyiri resulted in an estimated 10,000 refugees to Burkina Faso and another estimated 13,000 refugees to the Ivory Coast, and 48,000 displaced residents within the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba districts and the Bole-Bamboi districts. Also, another very worrying development in Sampa, which resulted in the killings of very dear residents within that area. It is important that, as a matter of urgency, within next week, the Minister for Interior and the Minister now responsible for Defence must appear before this house to give us updates,” he said.

He stressed, “Lives are more important, security is more important than everything else that we demand accountability on, and it will be highly irresponsible on our part as a House if we do not demonstrate that interest in these killings that took place and even so concerned as to the state of our compatriots who have become refugees in other places.”

Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine

The management of J.A. Plant Pool (Ghana) Limited (JAPP) has issued a response to clarify specific claims made by Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine concerning financial matters related to the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP).

The company stated that some of the allegations made by the Attorney General lack full context, which they believe is problematic.

According to the Attorney General’s statement: “In respect of the DRIP Programme, I have demanded a refund of Two Million United States Dollars ($2,000,000.00) from J.A. Plant Pool after investigations revealed financial irregularities. Although the contract sum was $176 million, records showed that a total of $178 million was paid, resulting in an excess of US$2 million.”

DRIP Contract: JA Plant Pool was overpaid by $2 million – AG reveals

However, JAPP has refuted the claims, noting that there was a formal agreement with the government regarding the contract, and all terms were duly acknowledged.

It was further noted that “the 2,420 units of equipment, which formed the subject matter of the contract, were fully itemised together with their individual prices in Schedule 1 of the agreement. The total contract price was stated as $178,704,739.50, consistent with Clause 3.1.1 of the contract, which expressly provides that, ‘this amount represents the full contract price for the supply of the equipment by the Supplier.”

The company also addressed other concerns and emphasised that the public should take note of its complete willingness to cooperate with authorities during the ongoing probe.

CEO of the Chamber of Licensed Gold Buyers, Kwaku Amoah CEO of the Chamber of Licensed Gold Buyers, Kwaku Amoah

The Chamber of Licensed Gold Buyers (CLGB) has commended the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) for its strides in formalising the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector and driving significant increases in gold production and exports.

In a statement issued on October 23, 2025, CLGB highlighted GoldBod’s role as the sole authorised buyer, assayer, seller, and exporter of gold from licensed ASM producers, noting that the formalisation efforts have enhanced traceability, accountability, and value retention in the sector.

“As the Chamber representing licensed gold buyers in Ghana, we are deeply encouraged by the performance of GoldBod,” CEO of CLGB of Kwaku Amoah said.

GoldBod Taskforce arrests American, Moroccan and Ghanaians for illegal gold buying

“The formalisation of the ASM sector is not just a regulatory improvement, it is a game-changer for value retention, economic development and sustainable mining practices. The figures speak for themselves: a 70% increase in ASM output in one year, US$4 billion in exports in just four months…”

CLGB noted that Ghana’s ASM production rose to 1.9 million ounces in 2024, contributing about 39% of the nation’s total gold output, while total gold production reached approximately 4.8 million ounces.

Between February and May 2025 alone, GoldBod purchased and exported 41.5 tonnes of ASM gold, valued at about US$4 billion (GH¢40 billion).

The Chamber also encouraged further support for ASM miners, expansion of digital traceability systems, and increased downstream value addition within Ghana.

“GoldBod has demonstrated that it is forward-looking with its goals in consolidating the formalisation of ASM, as applications for refinery, fabrication and jewellery have been opened as at 22-10-2025,” the statement added.

CLGB reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with GoldBod, the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, and other stakeholders to sustain transparency, ethical sourcing, and growth in the gold sector.

‘It became one of the children’ – Kenyan family on adopting orphaned cheetah cub

0

The cheetah is now being looked after in Nairobi The cheetah is now being looked after in Nairobi

A Kenyan family has told the BBC how a cheetah cub they adopted after finding it lying next to its dead mother became almost like one of their children.

However, their neighbours in the northern Wajir county were not pleased to see a wild animal being raised so close to them.

“Many people immediately told us to get rid of the cub so it wouldn’t harm the livestock. We didn’t do that because it seemed unreasonable,” Bisharo Abdirahman Omar said.

The reaction was unsurprising as the Somali-speaking nomadic community earn their living by raising livestock, which are often threatened by predators such as cheetahs, leopards, lions, and hyenas.

“We knew it wouldn’t benefit us in any way, like livestock would,” said Rashid Abdi Hussein, a 45-year-old father of 10.

“But I decided that since people are killing these animals, maybe we should raise them instead and be different.”

The family cared for the cub for two years and three months, during which it became an inseparable part of the family.

“The animal was troublesome at first, but in the end, it became tame and became one of the children,” he said.

The family fed the cub milk through a syringe at first, then meat when it was old enough.

“We have made a big sacrifice – since the day I rescued it, I have slaughtered 15 sheep to feed the cheetah,” Hussein told the BBC.

The family have been praised by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for their generosity in looking after an animal which is often killed or trafficked.

Sharmaarke Mohamed, head of the Northeastern Conservancy Association (NECA), says cheetahs and wildlife across north-eastern Kenya are facing a growing crisis that has gone largely unnoticed.

“Cheetahs are currently facing a very grave threat, along with many other wild animals,” he said.

“This young cheetah that was recently found was most likely orphaned, its mother was either killed or poisoned,” he said.

According to the Cheetah Conservation Fund, the smuggling of baby cheetahs is widespread in the region, with active trafficking routes running through northern Kenya, eastern Ethiopia, and Somalia.

The organization estimates that between 200 and 300 cheetah cubs are smuggled out of the Horn of Africa each year, many of which are transported to Yemen and then distributed across the Gulf States to be illegally sold as pets.

Omar said the family were approached by people who wanted to buy the young cheetah but they refused to sell it.

“While we were taking care of it, there were people who offered us money. Some even said they would pay 20,000 Kenyan shillings ($155; £115),” she told the BBC.

“Others suggested we trade it for goats, but we refused because it had become part of the family.”

While KWS praised the family for looking after the cheetah, it pointed out that keeping wild animals as pets is against the law.

“We deeply appreciate the Good Samaritan’s compassion and remind all Kenyans that true coexistence means protecting wildlife,” the agency said.

The young cheetah is now being taken care of at the Nairobi Safari Walk.

One injured as Hassan Ayariga’s Toyota V8 crashes at Ashaiman overhead

0

A near-fatal road accident occurred at the Ashaiman Overhead on Friday afternoon involving a Toyota V8 with registration number GN 76-16 and a commercial vehicle with registration number GS 3642-12.

Eyewitnesses say the incident happened when an ambulance, reportedly transporting a deceased person with a police escort, was driving at top speed while navigating through heavy traffic.

During the process, the Toyota V8, which was also said to be speeding, collided with the commercial vehicle before veering off the road into a gutter.

The driver of the commercial vehicle, Frank Amoah, recounted that he had stopped to give way to the ambulance and its escort when the Toyota V8 suddenly crashed into his car. He said his mate sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

In a separate account, the driver of the Toyota V8 claimed that one of the police escort riders allegedly struck his vehicle while attempting to clear the road for the ambulance. In an attempt to avoid further impact, he swerved but ended up hitting the commercial vehicle.

Citi News has confirmed that the Toyota V8 is owned by the founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga.

Mr. Ayariga said he was on his way to a programme when he was informed of the crash involving his driver. He described the news as shocking and distressing.

Both vehicles have since been towed from the scene, while the driver of the Toyota V8 is receiving medical attention. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The maiden MCs Workshop ended on a high note, leaving participants inspired and motivated to take their craft to new heights. Many attendees described it as a “career-shaping experience” and called for more editions to reach other regions across Ghana.

GhIS pushes for value management in infrastructure procurement

0

The call was made at the ongoing 2025 Quantity Surveying Division Conference and AGM The call was made at the ongoing 2025 Quantity Surveying Division Conference and AGM

The Quantity Surveying Division of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) is advocating for the integration of value management into infrastructure procurement to enhance project delivery and ensure value for money.

This advocacy, according to the Division, will guarantee the involvement of all stakeholders, particularly government and professional surveyors, from the inception of public infrastructure projects through to completion, in order to prevent poor-quality work and promote maximum value for clients and the public.

The call was made at the ongoing 2025 Quantity Surveying Division Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Cape Coast in the Central Region.

The initiative has become even more critical as government prepares to roll out its flagship national infrastructure programme, “The Big Push,” valued at about US$10 billion.

This year’s conference is on the theme: “Integrating Value Engineering into Infrastructural Procurement.” Nearly 300 Quantity Surveyors are participating in the AGM.

The construction industry is central to Ghana’s socio-economic development, providing essential infrastructure for healthcare, education, housing, energy, and transportation.

However, recurring challenges, such as cost overruns, project delays, substandard construction, limited use of local materials, and inadequate focus on sustainability, continue to undermine progress.

These issues are largely attributed to procurement practices focused on the lowest initial cost rather than long-term value, alongside limited use of advanced cost-management tools.

President of GhIS, Surv. Kofi Obeng Ayirebi, stressed that value engineering is not merely about cutting costs but about optimising function, improving performance, and ensuring maximum returns for every cedi invested.

Chairman of the Quantity Surveying Division, Surv. Osei Agyemang-Badu, urged government to prioritise value expectations rather than short-term cost-saving during project initiation, especially for public infrastructure.

The Chairperson of the Continuous Professional Development Sub-Committee, Dr Naa Adjeley A. Doamekpor, also expressed concern over the frequent public complaints about the quality of completed infrastructure, an indication that citizens may not be getting true value for money.

She emphasised that the conference aims to explore solutions to guarantee high-quality and value-driven public infrastructure delivery across the country.

Asante Kotoko have no chance against Wydad – Charles Taylor

Former Asante Kotoko star, Charles Taylor has cast serious doubt on the club’s chances of progressing in the CAF Confederation Cup, saying their upcoming clash against Wydad AC in Morocco will be “only for travel experience.”

Speaking in an interview with Angel TV, Taylor said it would be nearly impossible for the Porcupine Warriors to overturn their first-leg defeat when they face the Moroccan giants in Casablanca.

“Kotoko’s game against Wydad will only be for travel experience because most of the players haven’t really travelled that much. Morocco is a beautiful country, so they will use that opportunity to tour the country,” Taylor said.

Kotoko lost 1-0 to Wydad AC in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second-round qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

Photo of Akufo-Addo and Kurt Okraku meeting Odoi and his father surfaces online

The return leg takes place on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the Mohammed V Stadium, with kick-off at 19:00 GMT.

“It will be difficult for Kotoko to defeat Wydad. How will they be able to beat a team that can pay the salaries of all Ghana Premier League teams? If care is not taken, Kotoko can lose around three or four goals.”

“Zito can do all he can, but they won’t be able to pull this off. If any Kotoko fan has hope of qualification, that person should forget it,” he added.

Kotoko are aiming to reach the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in several years, but Taylor’s comments reflect the widespread skepticism about their ability to upset the North African powerhouse.

Let Hamas Abide By Ceasefire Terms • Israeli Envoy Calls On Ghana

0

Roey Gilad

The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has called on the Government of Ghana to use its influence to persuade Hamas to comply with the ceasefire deal brokered by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to end the conflict in Gaza.

Speaking at a press conference at the Israeli Embassy, the Ambassador stated that just as Ghana criticised Israel, the country is equally expected to use its strong voice in Africa, through ECOWAS and the AU, to call on Hamas to respect the terms of the deal.

“Given Ghana’s influential position in Africa, particularly within the African Union (AU), we expect Ghana to leverage its voice through ECOWAS and the AU to join the international community, in urging Hamas to comply with the agreement.

“Ghana should clearly support the agreement while also calling on Hamas to disarm and respect their commitments, as Hamas’s involvement in Gaza’s future is not envisaged by either Israel or the agreement,” he said.

The Israeli Ambassador stressed that the future of the Palestinian people takes precedence over Hamas’ interests. He said Hamas must disarm and honour its commitments, similar to the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA)’s disarmament in Ireland 20 years ago, to pave the way for peace in Gaza.

“We expect and hope that Ghana, as a peace-loving state that respects democracy and stability, will sound a clear call to Hamas to disarm and respect the agreement they signed. Hamas should not have a role in the future of Gaza. The future of Gaza should be in the hands of innocent Palestinians who want to live alongside Israel, not instead of Israel,” he said.

The Israeli Ambassador stated that Ghana’s Foreign Minister adopted a UN report accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, which he believes is inaccurate.

“It was premature for the Minister to adopt the report without thorough scrutiny, given its serious allegations and the term’s historical significance stemming from the Holocaust,” he said.

“While we acknowledge the tragic events in Gaza, the issue at hand is determining responsibility, not comparing scales of tragedy,” he added.

The Ambassador stated that the Minister for Foreign Affairs’ decision to adopt the report was a mistake, but the matter is being addressed.

He added that government did not send a representative to the second memorial ceremony for the October 7th massacre, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs later issued an official apology, attributing the absence to a “bureaucratic administrative blunder.”

KNUST reigns supreme in National Insurance Debate

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has emerged victorious in the grand finale of the 2025 National Insurance Debate Competition, held at the Insurance House in Accra.

The event brought together 16 tertiary institutions from across the country to engage in intellectually charged debates on critical issues shaping Ghana’s insurance industry.

After weeks of rigorous preliminary and zonal contests, Ada University College of Education and KNUST advanced to the final round, representing the southern and northern zones respectively.

The final motion for debate was: “Insurance should be treated as a fundamental human right rather than a commercial business.”

Ada University College of Education, champions of the southern zone, passionately supported the motion, arguing that recognising insurance as a human right would ensure equitable protection for all citizens, especially the vulnerable.

They emphasised that treating insurance purely as a profit-driven commodity deprives many Ghanaians of access to basic financial security and social protection.

KNUST, on the other hand, strongly opposed the motion. They contended that making insurance a fundamental human right would undermine the sustainability of the industry, distort market principles, overburden government resources, and limit private sector participation.

The team maintained that while insurance is essential, it functions best within a well-regulated commercial environment that balances public benefit with business viability.

The two-hour intellectual exchange was intense and insightful, featuring evidence-based arguments, compelling examples, and critical reflections on indemnity, economic implications, and policy frameworks. Judges praised both teams for their research depth, clarity, and composure under pressure.

At the end of the contest, KNUST clinched first place with a total score of 83 points, earning the championship trophy and a GH¢5,000 cash prize. Ada University College of Education followed closely with 73 points, receiving a GH¢3,000 cash prize and a plaque for their impressive performance.

Following their victory, the KNUST team expressed gratitude to the Insurance Awareness Coordinators’ Group (IACG), organisers of the competition, for promoting insurance literacy and policy awareness through such educational platforms.

They reaffirmed their commitment to advancing discussions that strengthen the link between academia, industry, and national development.

The National Insurance Debate Competition continues to serve as a platform for nurturing the next generation of insurance professionals and thought leaders, reinforcing Ghana’s vision of becoming the Insurance Hub of Africa.

“I haven’t been neglected,” Anita Desoso says as she confirms appointment

0

Anita Desoso, former National Womens Organiser, NDC

National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart, Anita Desoso, has refuted claims that she has been sidelined or abandoned by the current government, clarifying that she currently serves on the Board of the National Population Council.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, following the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, Madam Desoso assured party supporters and well-wishers that she remains an active contributor to national development.

“I have not been sidelined or abandoned. When we talk about appointments, I have been given one, but I cannot come and make noise about it,” she explained.

The former NDC National Women’s Organizer said some members might have misinterpreted her low public profile as neglect, but she took time off after the 2024 elections to rest. “After the election, some of us needed to rest because I am growing old,” she noted.

Touching on the death of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, Madam Desoso described the loss as deeply painful, acknowledging the immense role the late former First Lady and her husband, Jerry John Rawlings, played in shaping her political journey.

“Besides God, it is her and her husband who helped make me somebody,” she said emotionally.

Her comments come amid renewed conversations about recognition and inclusivity within the NDC.

Madam Desoso’s assurance, however, signals her continued loyalty and contribution to the party and national governance.

Citizen petitions GTEC board for clarity on DG’s academic credentials

0

A citizen, Mr. Kwame Simpe Ofori, has formally written to the Governing Board of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) requesting detailed information on the academic qualifications and professorial appointment of the Commission’s Director-General, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai.

In a letter dated October 24, 2025, and submitted under the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), Mr. Ofori asked the GTEC Board to disclose specific details regarding Professor Abdulai’s academic credentials, publications, and promotion to the rank of professor.

The request, according to Mr. Ofori, is made “in the public interest,” emphasizing the need for transparency, accountability, and integrity within Ghana’s tertiary education sector.

He requested information on the type and title of Professor Abdulai’s terminal academic degree, the awarding institution, the publications submitted for his promotion to associate professor, and whether his elevation to full professor occurred while he was a faculty member at the University of Education, Winneba, or during his secondment to GTEC.

Mr. Ofori also requested any official records, correspondence, or curriculum vitae on file with GTEC that confirm the Director-General’s academic credentials.

The request noted that searches conducted on credible academic databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and ResearchGate revealed no publicly available peer-reviewed research output or scholarly citations linked to Professor Abdulai.

“Since research productivity remains a fundamental requirement for the award of professorial status, clarification on this matter will reinforce confidence in the processes governing academic promotions and appointments within Ghana’s tertiary-education landscape,” the letter stated.

Copies of the correspondence have been sent to the Minister for Education, the Chairman of the Public Services Commission, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba.

Mr. Ofori concluded by urging GTEC to respond within the statutory timeframe prescribed under the Right to Information Act.

The wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra on Thursday October 23 at the age of 76. She was Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady and a leading advocate for women’s empowerment and social justice, most notably through her leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement.

Former President Kufuor recounted his personal encounter with Nana Konadu shortly before her passing.

“I am truly surprised because on Wednesday, I went to church late. When I got there, she was already seated, and my friend was sitting beside her. During the offertory, she came to ask me how I was doing, and I told her I was fine; there was nothing to suggest she was unwell.

“Yesterday, around 10 a.m., I had some visitors, and one of them asked if I had heard what had happened—that Nana Konadu had passed away. I asked how that was possible, because I had seen her yesterday. But God knows best, and I have come to commiserate with you.”

Her passing has elicited condolences from across Ghana. The Acting Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, in a statement on October 24, 2025, described her as a woman of “remarkable vision, courage, and conviction,” whose life and work left an enduring mark on Ghana’s social and political landscape.

Why the rush? – Atta Akyea defends walkout after judge rejects adjournment

Samuel Atta Akyea is the lead counsel former National Signals Bureau Director Samuel Atta Akyea is the lead counsel former National Signals Bureau Director

Lead counsel for former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, Samuel Atta Akyea, has justified walking out of an Accra High Court sitting on Thursday, October 23, after Justice Eugene Nyadu Nyantei refused his request for an adjournment.

Addressing journalists after the incident, Atta Akyea explained that his legal team had filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking to prohibit Justice Nyantei from presiding over the case on grounds of bias.

In an adomonline.com report on October 24, 2025, he argued that once the motion was before the apex court, the High Court should have halted proceedings until a ruling was made.

Drama in Court as lawyers of Adu-Boahene stage walkout

“I had filed a motion at the Supreme Court asking that the judge be prohibited from handling the matter because we do not believe justice will be served. I informed the court and requested an adjournment until the Supreme Court decides. The judge declined and insisted on proceeding,” he stated.

The former Works and Housing Minister questioned the urgency with which the trial was being pursued, describing the judge’s approach as ‘unnecessary haste’.

“Why the rush? Why can’t the judge wait for a week for the Supreme Court’s decision before continuing?” he asked.

Earlier in court, Principal State Attorney Esi Dentaa Yankah opposed the adjournment request, arguing that there was no legal basis to suspend the trial.

Justice Nyantei subsequently ruled that the case would proceed, allowing the second prosecution witness to take the stand despite the defence team’s walkout.

The matter now awaits the Supreme Court’s decision on the motion to bar Justice Nyantei from hearing the case.

Court throws out Adu-Boahene’s move to stop criminal trial

Adu-Boahene, his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, and two others are facing multiple charges including theft, money laundering involving approximately GH¢49.1 million, causing financial loss to the state, and abuse of public office.

A third accused person, Mildred Donkor, has turned state witness after charges against her were withdrawn.

Trump halts trade talks with Canada over anti-tariff ad

0

US President Donald Trump has announced an immediate end to all trade negotiations with Canada over an advert critical of the tariffs he has imposed on the nation.

The advert, sponsored by the government of Canada’s province of Ontario, quoted Trump’s predecessor, Ronald Reagan, an icon of US conservatism, saying tariffs “hurt every American”.

Trump wrote on social media that the advert was “FAKE” and “egregious”, adding that trade talks were “HEREBY TERMINATED”.

His administration has imposed a 35% levy on many Canadian imports, as well as individual tariffs targeting particular industries like car and steel manufacturing. Ontario has been particularly hard-hit by these.

Trump has allowed exemptions for goods that fall under a free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada that he negotiated during his first term.

But Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has since his election earlier this year attempted to strike a deal that would ease the US tariffs.

This has been complicated by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who is one of the most vocal critics of the taxes levied on US firms buying Canadian products.

In the minute-long advert published last week, Reagan’s voice can be heard narrating over images that include the New York Stock Exchange and cranes adorned with both US and Canadian flags.

The video excerpts a 1987 national radio address by Reagan that focused on foreign trade.

“When someone says, ‘let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports’, it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes, for a short while it works, but only for a short time,” Reagan says in the advert.

“Over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American, worker and consumer.

“High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars… Markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industries shut down and millions of people lose their jobs.”

The Ronald Reagan Foundation – which is charged with preserving his legacy – released a statement on Thursday saying the advert had used “selective” audio and video of the former president’s remarks.

It said the advert “misrepresents” the former president’s address, without specifying why, and accused the Ontario government of not seeking permission to use and edit the remarks.

The foundation said it was “reviewing its legal options”.

Trump referenced this statement, and said the video was designed to “interfere with” the US Supreme Court’s upcoming decision in November on whether Washington’s sweeping tariffs on many nations’ products are legal.

The court’s decision represents the biggest test of Trump’s presidential authority and signature economic policy, potentially forcing the US to refund billions collected in tariffs.

While the minute-long advert only includes excerpts from the original, five-minute-long address, it does not alter Reagan’s words.

The order in which he makes the comments has been changed. The advert’s penultimate sentence is taken from near the beginning of his speech, and a phrase that features about halfway through the advert is likewise taken from an earlier point in the address.

The original address – titled Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade – is regarding a specific set of tariffs the Reagan administration had at the time imposed on some Japanese goods.

Reagan seeks to use the speech explain why he had introduced the tariffs in this “special case” despite his belief that “imposing such tariffs or trade barriers and restrictions of any kind are steps that I am loath to take”.

He makes clear that he wants to lift them as soon as possible “to promote the prosperity and economic development that only free trade can bring” – a position he stresses throughout the speech.

Trump later doubled down on his criticism of the advert, writing that “Ronald Reagan did not like Tariffs, when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY”.

The advert was run as part of a campaign worth $75m Canadian dollars (£40m; $54m) on mainstream TV channels in the US.

In a post accompanying the advert, Ford wrote that “we’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada”.

China’s embassy in Washington also used a similar Reagan clip in a post on X to cast doubt on Trump’s global tariffs earlier this year.

Ontario is Canada’s most populous province and its largest regional economy, and has suffered the most as a result of the US tariffs.

Ford hit back at Trump’s earlier tariff threat against Canada by saying he was willing to cut off power supply to the US.

He had also described Washington’s trade policies against Canada as having pulled a knife and “yanked it into us”, and called on US lawmakers to put pressure on Trump.

Trump’s sector-specific levies on Canadian goods include a 50% levy on metals and 25% on automobiles.

The White House’s global tariffs – particularly on steel, aluminium and cars – have hit Canada hard, forcing job losses and putting pressure on businesses.

Carney and Ford have not yet commented on Trump’s announcement.

It is the second time Trump has said he was ceasing trade talks with Canada, after Ottawa announced it would impose a digital services tax on US technology firms earlier this year.

When Canada rescinded the tax, the White House said Carney had “caved” to pressure from Trump.

Solomon Asamoah Fails To Halt Skytrain Trial

Solomon Asamoah

A High Court in Accra has dismissed an application by former Chief Executive of Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Solomon Asamoah, seeking to halt his trial in the $2 million non-existent Skytrain scandal, pending appeal.

His lawyer, Victoria Barth, had moved a motion urging the court to pause the trial to enable her pursue an appeal against the court’s decision to dismiss an earlier application by the accused, asking the prosecution to provide him with more disclosure documents.

The application was opposed by Sefakor Batse, a Chief State Attorney, who argued that it had no merit.

The court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, in a ruling dismissed the application, holding that he did not demonstrate any exceptional circumstances to warrant the court to grant the application.

Mr. Asamoah and the erstwhile Board Chairman of GIIF, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, are on trial for their alleged involvement in the dissipation of state funds in the non-existent $2 million Accra Skytrain project.

In July this year, he filed an application before the court asking it to order the prosecution to disclose certain documents which he said were deliberately omitted during disclosure but are crucial to his preparation for defence.

Among the documents he was asking for are all board packs that were sent to members of the GIIF Board from 2017 to 2021, along with both signed and unsigned minutes of the Board and Investment Committee meetings that took place during that period.

He was also seeking the complete attendance records for every GIIF Board and Investment Committee meeting within those years.

Again, Mr. Asamoah sought for all memoranda related to the AI Skytrain project, as well as email correspondence between himself and several members of the board, among others.

The application was opposed by Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, who argued that the materials requested for are not in the prosecution’s possession, and did not come into their possession or the possession of the investigators.

The court, presided over by Justice Comfort Tasiame, in a short ruling held that the prosecution had indicated that the said documents are not in their possession and since there are other means counsel for applicant can use to procure the documents they are requesting for, the request would not be granted.

Trial

The brief facts indicate that the Accra Skytrain project was to be constructed on a Design, Build Finance, and Operate basis.

“In the memorandum of understanding, GIIF was to be the anchor equity investor and local project development partner to the Africa Investor Holdings (Proprietary) Limited. It was further agreed in the memorandum of understanding that GIIF would conduct due diligence and develop a bankable feasibility study on the project,” the facts disclosed.

A shareholder agreement was subsequently signed on January 9, 2019 between GIIF and Africa Investor Holdings Limited where the latter was to transfer 10% of its alleged 100% shares in a company styled as ‘Ai Skytrain Consortium Holdings,’ a limited liability company registered in Mauritius.

Upon their arrest, Solomon Asamoah is said to have indicated in his cautioned statement that he obtained approval of GIIF board, in respect of the payment, while Prof. Akumfi told investigators he signed the funds transfer on the recommendation of Mr. Asamoah.

The facts added that neither of the accused persons have been able to account for the $2 million.

Cape Coast, Oct 23, GNA – The Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) has handed over packages of books, callipers and a range of surveying equipment to the Mfantsipim and Holy Child Schools in Cape Coast.

The presentation formed part of activities marking the Institution’s ongoing annual conference in Cape Coast from Thursday, October 23, to Friday, October 24, 2025.

The gesture sought to boost practical learning, connect education with industry, strengthen school capacity, encourage surveying careers and foster public-private collaboration.

The initiative also served to improve hands-on training in geomatics and related fields, align student skills with professional needs, expand teaching resources and attract more students to surveying as a noble profession.

It is also to ultimately build sustained partnerships and contribute to effective land management and infrastructure planning to enhance national development.

Presenting the items, Mr Osei Agyeman-Badu, Chairman of the Quantity Surveying Division of GhIS said the Institution’s annual gestures included donating computers to educational facilities across the country to reflect its spirited social responsibility and commitment to supporting institutions that trained future professionals.

Providing textbooks, manuals and surveying equipment directly, he said had supported hands-on learning and enabled students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts to enhance competence in fields like geomatics, land surveying and mapping, which are foundational for planning and development projects.

Access to these additional resources, he said would expand the capacity of participating teachers in the schools to teach more effectively, potentially reaching more students and improving learning outcomes in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics related subjects, including geospatial studies.

He encouraged the management of the schools to put the items to good use, ensure regular maintenance to benefits more students in the future.

Encouraged the students, they underlined the role and importance of surveyors as a noble profession playing critical functions in land measurement, boundary determination, mapping and supporting infrastructure development.

They said surveyors were essential for ensuring order in land ownership, enabling the planning, design and execution of all important civil engineering projects such as highways, bridges, tunnels and dams across the country.

Their expertise, according to them, had provided the foundation for quality infrastructure development, helping to prevent disputes, save costs and enhance project accuracy and safety.

On carrier progression, they said in Ghana, to qualify as a surveyor, one must hold at least a first degree in a core surveying-related field recognised by the Ghana Institute of Surveyors (GhIS).

Candidates with a bachelor’s degree typically underwent a training programme at an approved firm, followed by examinations and interviews to gain licensure.

They explained that entry into surveying education required passes in core academic subjects like English, Mathematics and Integrated Science at the secondary school level.

Professional certification and continuous development through the Ghana Institution of Surveyors are essential for career advancement.

“Surveying is the bedrock of quality infrastructure, the silent architect upon which every great development stands—truly the best profession among the rest.

“This highlights surveying as a foundational and honourable profession crucial to societal progress and infrastructure excellence,” Mr Okyere told the students.

Madam Josephine Asamoah, Assistant Head Administration at Holy Child on behalf of the school that the group for the honour, pledged to safeguard them and called for more support.

‘I was the first to collaborate with Stonebwoy, and that song made him popular’ – Kwaw Kese

0

One of the most influential rappers in Ghana, Kwaw Kese, has revealed that he played a key role in shaping the careers of several top artistes, including Stonebwoy, Opanka, and Sarkodie.

In an interview on TV3, the “Abodam” hitmaker said he made a huge impact in Stonebwoy’s rise to fame by being the first artiste to feature him on a song.

According to him, their collaboration on “No More” in the early 2010s was the project that brought Stonebwoy into the limelight.

Kwaw Kese explained that his contribution to the Ghanaian music industry goes beyond his hits, as he has helped groom a number of artistes who are now household names.

“I groomed talents. I am the first person to do a song with Stonebwoy, not once, but twice and my song blew up Stonebwoy. I did same with Opanka and he became big after that. And we did same on ‘You Dey Craze,’ Hammer’s song, and that was when Obidi was discovered,” he said.

Kwaw Kese’s comments also revisited his past relationship with Sarkodie. In 2021, the rapper criticized Sarkodie, calling him “arrogant” and “ungrateful.”

He made that comment during an interview with Abeiku Santana on Okay FM, where he expressed disappointment over how Sarkodie had distanced himself despite the help he received in his early days.

At the time, Kwaw Kese said he had tried reaching out to Sarkodie several times but got no response.

However, in his latest appearance on TV3, when asked about his relationship with Sarkodie now, he clarified that they are on good terms.

“We are good, I don’t have any problem with anybody, sometimes I dey talk my mind just like how everybody also talks their mind,” he stated.

Police Inspector who killed girlfriend jailed for life

0

The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, popularly known as “Taacum,” to life imprisonment after a seven-member jury, by a 5–2 majority verdict, found him guilty of murder.

Inspector Twumasi was convicted for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah — popularly known as Maadwoa — near her residence at Adum, Kumasi, on April 20, 2023. The killing sparked national outrage and renewed public concern over gun violence and professional misconduct within the security services.

Though the police officer initially confessed to the shooting, he claimed it was not intentional. He later pleaded not guilty, leading to a full trial before the jury.

After nearly three years of legal proceedings, Justice Rosemond Baah-Tosu delivered the final judgment on Friday, April 24, 2025.

Family members of the late Victoria Dapaah, who packed the courtroom, expressed relief and gratitude over the verdict. Her mother, Adwoa Nyarko, thanked the media for their consistent coverage of the case, describing the judgment as “long-overdue justice” for her daughter.

Background

Twenty-six-year-old Victoria Dapaah, popularly known as Maa Adwoa, was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, on April 20, 2023, at Adum — just a few metres from her residence.

During his first court appearance, Inspector Twumasi admitted to the shooting but claimed he did not intend to kill “his lover.”

Investigations by the prosecution revealed that the incident followed a dispute over a GH¢5,000 debt. The police officer had reportedly demanded a refund from the deceased, and when she failed to repay the amount, he allegedly shot her, resulting in her death.

Tafo zongo youth donates GH₵220k minibus as community ambulance

0

A young man from Tafo Zongo in Kumasi, Abass Yusuf Mohammed, has donated a Mercedes-Benz Vepro minibus, worth GH₵220,000 (2.2 billion old cedis), to serve as an ambulance for the community.

The vehicle will be used to transport sick people to hospitals and also carry the dead for Islamic burials—a need that has long troubled residents of Tafo Zongo and surrounding communities.

Before this donation, the community had no dedicated ambulance or hearse.

Sick people were often rushed to the hospital in taxis or on motorbikes, while the deceased were carried in the back of open pickup trucks—a situation that Abass says deeply pained him.

“I used to see dead bodies being carried in pickups to the cemetery,” Abass recounted. “It made me sad. Every human being deserves privacy and dignity, even after death. That is what pushed me to buy this bus for my people.”

Abass, who works as a scrap dealer, said it took him years of hard work and savings to make the purchase. He described the gesture as his contribution to the welfare of his community and his faith.

“I believe we can all do something small to help our people. I want to tell the youth that there is honour in hard work. Let’s find jobs and stay away from bad habits.”

Residents of Tafo Zongo have hailed the donation as a huge relief. Many described it as “timely,” especially for a community that struggles with emergency transport for both health and burial services.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Old Tafo, Abubakar Saddick, commended Abass for his benevolent act, describing it as an example of true community leadership.

“For a long time, it has been a challenge getting an ambulance in this area,” the MCE said. “We have been looking for ways to address it, so for an individual to take it upon himself to do this — it’s something we must all emulate.”

He added that the new bus will support the existing National Ambulance Service in the area and ease pressure on health workers during emergencies.

“This ambulance will also augment the efforts of the municipal health service in saving lives.”

Abass’s donation has also won the admiration of local religious and youth leaders, who said his example reflects the true spirit of Islam — service, compassion, and humility.

At the brief ceremony to hand over the keys, prayers were offered for Abass and his business. Community elders described him as “a young man with an old soul,” saying his act had brought pride and dignity to Tafo Zongo.

“Today, Abass has shown us that being a scrap dealer or doing any honest work doesn’t limit your ability to do great things,” said one elder. “He has done what even some wealthy people have not thought of.”

In a time when youth stories often centre around crime, unemployment, and drug abuse, Abass’s story stands out, that young people can lead positive change in their communities.

He says he hopes his action will inspire others to contribute to the well-being of their neighbours in whatever way they can.

As the gleaming white minibus now parks, waiting for its next call, whether to rush someone to the hospital or carry a soul to its final rest, one man’s kindness can restore dignity to an entire community.

‘E-Procurement System Key To Upholding Fiscal Discipline’

0

Thomas Nyarko Ampem

Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has called on stakeholders in the procurement sector to fully adopt the Public Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS) in order to help uphold fiscal discipline.

Speaking at the 11th Public Procurement forum in Accra yesterday, the Deputy Minister said the continued reform of Ghana’s procurement system is important to ensuring effective public procurement processes.

He indicated that next year would mark three decades since the country first embarked on comprehensive public procurement reforms noting that the enactment of the Public Procurement Act 2003 (Act 663) and subsequent amendments, including those in 2016 and 2025, laid the legal foundation for a transparent, fair, and accountable procurement system.

“These reforms are not merely legislative changes, they represent a fundamental re-engineering of processes, anchored in digital transformation, through the Ghana Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS).”

He also stated that public procurement is not only meant for administrative purposes but a strategic tool that shapes government spending and drives the country’s economic growth.

According to the Minister, Public procurement accounts for between 13 to 20 percent of Ghana’s GDP, with over 40 percent of the country’s total domestic revenue for 2025 expected to pass through the procurement system.

That, he explained, highlights the importance of ensuring that procurement processes are conducted with the highest standards of transparency and accountability.

He further expressed the government commitment to integrating procurement systems and ensuring compliance with established frameworks to prevent leakages and ensure that every cedi spent serves its intended public purpose.

Chief Executive Officer of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), Frank Mantey, for his part said electronic procurement is useful in addressing corruption and improving efficiency in public procurement.

He cited the example of South Korea where e-procurement has over the years supported the growth of Small Medium enterprises (SMEs)

The PPA boss also added that “Incorporating e-procurement into Ghana’s procurement landscape will allow us to keep pace with global trends and reap the benefits of digital transformation.”
