Hidden epidemics in Africa and power of serosurveillance

0

Serosurveys have expanded our understanding of infectious diseases in Africa, revealing the true burden of pathogens beyond reported outbreaks.

These studies have uncovered silent epidemics of otherwise never-reported pathogens of interest and provided additional insight into the burden of reported pathogens. This includes providing evidence of widespread dengue exposure among children and unexpected seroprevalence of Marburg virus disease.

Dr. Anthony Afum-Adjei Awuah has been at the forefront of these efforts, leveraging seroprevalence studies to bridge the gap between traditional outbreak responses and proactive pandemic preparedness.

A research team in Ghana set out on a routine public health study in early 2021. Their goal was simple: collect blood samples from healthy individuals from randomly selected households from the country’s northern, middle, and southern belts to test for COVID-19 antibodies.

The effort proved worthwhile. The research found 84.7% of people in Tamale, 43.9% in Kumasi, and 53.3% in Accra had been exposed to SARS-CoV-2, although the number of cases reported was extremely low. These findings countered global assumptions about the transmission of COVID-19 in Africa and helped shape Ghana’s national policy.

“For pandemic preparedness, seroprevalence surveys are invaluable,” says Dr. Anthony Afum-Adjei Awuah, Deputy Group Lead at Global Health and Infectious Diseases Research Group (GHID), Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), KNUST. “They give us a retrospective look at past exposures and provide an additional layer of support to the traditional surveillance system to improve pandemic preparedness.”

A brief history of seroprevalence studies

The beginnings of seroprevalence studies can be traced back to the early 20th century when scientists started drawing blood from patients to screen for antibodies, providing evidence of a prior infection. Once infected, a person’s immune system produces antibodies specific to the pathogen. Some of these antibodies can linger for years and can be used to determine if a person has been infected at any point with a pathogen, especially when it was undiagnosed. During World War II, they were used to track diseases like typhus and malaria in soldiers. In the 1980s, serosurveys played a crucial role in understanding the spread of HIV and some beneficial responses worldwide.

Over the years, seroprevalence studies have become important tools for mapping disease exposures, monitoring vaccine coverage, and identifying immunity gaps. Today, these surveys seek to expose hidden outbreaks and direct responses to avert future pandemics.

Beyond COVID-19

The Ghana work was only the beginning. Researchers quickly realized that serosurveys could uncover exposures not only to COVID-19 but also to a whole host of other infectious threats.

Under the SERODEN study, blood samples drawn from Ghana, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo showed widespread exposure to Dengue virus. In Ghana, it was found that 36% of children in Tamale had already been exposed by age nine, compared to 5% percent in Kumasi and 18% in Accra.

“This means that in some parts of Africa, there is an increased risk of dengue infection especially among children,” Dr. Afum-Adjei Awuah mentions. “Understanding this helps us put a public health intervention in place and plan for potential vaccine rollouts.”

The Marburg Virus mystery

The most unsettling finding came from the SeroMARV study, which aimed to track exposure to the Marburg virus, a deadly hemorrhagic fever virus related to Ebola.

These severe viral infections cause extensive internal bleeding, high fever, and massive organ damage by disrupting the body’s ability to regulate blood clotting and vascular integrity.

In July 2022, when Ghana faced its first-ever Marburg virus outbreak, three cases were confirmed in the Ashanti region, two of which were fatal. This impressed the need for proactive surveillance to detect and respond to emerging threats promptly.

Dr John Amuasi, Group lead for the GHID-KCCR and co-lead of The African coaLition for Epidemic Research, Response and Training (ALERRT), explained why there was a need to deploy the SeroMARV study.

“When the Ghana Health Service announced that there was a Marburg virus disease outbreak, the team sprang into action. Our inquiries with the support of the Ghana Health Service led us to believe the outbreak as we saw it might have been the tip of the iceberg.”

“We realized by deploying well-designed serosurveys, we could better appreciate what might have happened and its scale and therefore generate knowledge which would help Ghana be better prepared for future outbreaks,” he said.

The initial findings suggested that there were individuals in the areas where these outbreaks occurred who had been previously exposed to the Marburg virus but did not show typical symptoms associated with the disease.

“Serological assays are not perfect,” Dr. Afum-Adjei Awuah explains. “There is the need to address discordance with the immunological tools used to perform these serosurveys.”

The researchers estimated that Marburg virus seroprevalence in Ghana was around 0.6%, with one sample testing positive for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, a widespread zoonotic disease caused by a tick-borne virus (Nairovirus). The findings suggested that while undetected Marburg transmission might be occurring, cross-reactivity in antibody tests could also distort the picture.

This tells us two things,” Dr. Awuah says. “First, Marburg exposure might be broader than we think. Second, we need better diagnostic tools to confirm these findings.”

Strengthening disease surveillance

Seroprevalence studies wield the ability to identify hidden threats that can direct public health response before outbreaks occur.

“The advantage here is that if we look for antibodies against pathogens based on our understanding of immunology, we will better be able to tell if there has been any cause for worries,” Dr Afum-Adjei Awuah explains.

“Our work seeks to provide some understanding and guidance to identify transmission hotspots that otherwise our conventional surveillance system may miss.”

Researchers are trying to upscale activities through the SeroMarv Africa Plus Study, which will expand serosurveys to other African countries. In addition to determining the burden of past exposure to pathogens of interest, the study will also examine the role that genetics play in susceptibility to these infections.

Dr. Afum-Adjei Awuah believes that Africa must take charge of its disease surveillance. “If we truly want to prevent the next pandemic, we need to move from reactive to proactive strategies,” he says. “Seroprevalence studies give us that opportunity.”

A highly anticipated documentary is set to explore the complex life of Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, with a particular focus on his relationships with women, his connection to popular Nigerian artist and entrepreneur McGalaxy, Nollywood actress Tana Adelana and Nigerian fashion designer popularly known as beunique. The film promises to offer an in-depth look at the personal dynamics surrounding one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures and his relationships with women.

Godswill Akpabio: A Politician with a Polarizing Legacy

Senator Godswill Akpabio, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and current Senate President of Nigeria, is a politician with a legacy that has garnered controversy. Akpabio has long been known for his role in the development of Akwa Ibom, his rise to national prominence, and his strong political influence. However, the upcoming documentary will take a different approach by focusing on the private aspects of his life, particularly his relationships with women and his social interactions with key figures in the entertainment world.

The documentary is set to delve into Akpabio’s personal life, including allegations and rumors regarding his romantic and social relationships. While these matters have remained mostly out of the public eye, whispers in the political and social spheres have linked him to various women, and the documentary will offer a closer examination of these associations. The portrayal of Akpabio as a multifaceted leader will challenge the typical narratives around politicians and their personal lives.

McGalaxy: The Pimp Connection

One of the more intriguing and controversial aspects of the documentary involves the relationship between Godswill Akpabio and the popular Nigerian musician and entrepreneur McGalaxy. McGalaxy, best known for his hit songs and presence on social media, is often described as a “pimp” within certain circles, and the documentary will explore this role in detail. It is alleged that McGalaxy has been involved in facilitating the social connections of several prominent individuals, including those with ties to Akpabio.

The documentary promises to reveal how McGalaxy has played a role in navigating the social and political landscapes, including acting as a middleman in introducing women to key political figures. His unique position within both the entertainment and political spheres has led to claims of him exerting influence over high-profile figures, and the documentary aims to pull back the curtain on these complex relationships and exposes a wide range of popular female celebrities in Nigeria that has been pimped to Akpabio through Mc galaxy.

Tana Adelana: Nollywood Actress, alleged pimp

The third key figure in the documentary is Nollywood actress Tana Adelana, who has made a name for herself with her acting prowess and social media presence. According to the documentary, Tana Adelana is linked to Godswill Akpabio, with reports suggesting that she has been part of the social circles frequented by the powerful men. Adelana’s role in the documentary is poised to raise questions about her involvement with high-profile individuals in Nigeria’s political and entertainment worlds. Adelana who has been rumored to be another major pimp of Akpabio for over a decade and has brought so many women in the industry to Akpabio for sexual favors in exchange for money.

As one of Nollywood’s rising stars, Adelana’s career and personal life have been subjects of media scrutiny, and this documentary is expected to offer new insights into her relationships with Akpabio. Whether romantic or professional, the connections between these figures are shrouded in secrecy, and the documentary aims to bring these previously hidden dynamics to light.

Exploring the Intersection of Politics and Entertainment

What sets this documentary apart from typical political exposés is its exploration of the intersection between Nigeria’s entertainment industry and its political landscape. As politics and entertainment continue to play crucial roles in shaping Nigerian society, figures like Akpabio, McGalaxy, and Adelana exemplify the blurred lines between these two powerful worlds.

The documentary will not only delve into personal relationships but also examine the broader societal implications of these connections. How do the powerful relationships between politicians, entertainers, and social influencers affect Nigeria’s political discourse? What do these dynamics say about the power structures within both spheres? These are some of the questions the documentary will address, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the country’s most influential circles.

Controversy and Anticipation

Naturally, the documentary is generating significant buzz in both political and entertainment circles, with some supporters of Akpabio and other subjects expressing concern over its potential to damage reputations. Others, however, are excited for the insight it will provide into the often murky world of Nigerian politics and celebrity culture.

While it remains to be seen how Akpabio will respond to the documentary’s release, it is clear that this project will spark important conversations about power, influence, and the intersections of personal and public life in Nigeria.

The documentary is expected to premiere in the coming months, and whether it leaves audiences with more questions than answers or a deeper understanding of the intertwined worlds of politics and entertainment, one thing is certain: it will be a must-watch for anyone seeking to understand the intricate and often controversial relationships that shape modern Nigerian society.

Conclusion

As the documentary on Godswill Akpabio approaches its release, it is sure to provoke debate and challenge existing perceptions of Nigerian political and entertainment elites. With its promise to uncover previously hidden relationships and connections, the film offers an unprecedented opportunity to see how the powerful operate behind closed doors. Whether the documentary serves as a political exposé or simply as a look at the complex world of Nigerian public figures, it will undoubtedly capture the public’s attention.

Policy rate hike comes at a wrong time; government must be financially disciplined – IPPA

0

The Institute of Public Policy and Accountability (IPPA) believes the Bank of Ghana rushed in increasing its policy rate by 100 basis points to 28%.

According to the policy think tank, though inflation remains high, above 20%, it has declined for two consecutive months, and therefore, the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana could have observed the inflationary trend for some time before adjusting its policy rate upwards.

“The Institute of Public Policy and Accountability though recognises the above challenges the hike in the policy rate is coming at a wrong time. Inflation is still above 20% but has witnessed two consecutive declines (marginally). Therefore, the Committee could have observed the situation for some time before adjusting the policy rate up”.

“An increase in the policy rate is a disincentive to businesses and household consumers as they grapple with the high cost of operations and living. We therefore want the Bank of Ghana to take a second look at its inflation targeting framework. We think that the Bank cannot continue to depend solely on that policy to control money supply. Many questions have been asked regarding the efficacy of the inflation targeting framework purely because the current drivers of inflation are supply-side and not demand-side”, it said in a statement.

There was a split decision by the 5-member MPC over the policy rate, with three proposing an increase while the remaining two dissented.

IPPA said the high policy rate is a disincentive to businesses as many grapple with high borrowing and operational costs.

It also questioned the government’s appetite for borrowing and poor fiscal management, urging the Bank of Ghana not to lend to the government and criticise the government if necessary.

“A disciplined government is important in keeping the macroeconomic fundamentals (lower interest rates, lower inflation, reduced borrowing, stable exchange rate) stronger and opening the economy for growth. Inconsistency in fiscal prudence has been our bane over the years. We, therefore, urged the Bank of Ghana not to shy away from criticising the government or pulling the plug anytime it foresees the government exhibiting poor fiscal management”.

“It [Bank of Ghana] should not succumb to executive pressure by lending to the government or printing monies. We also want the government to be disciplined by not borrowing excessively or spending beyond its means. Again, borrowed funds should be invested in productive sectors of the economy”, it added.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (L) and Alexander Afenyo-Markin (R) Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (L) and Alexander Afenyo-Markin (R)

The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has asked the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, to use his time during the current parliamentary recess to adjust his leadership style.

“I hope that the parliamentary recess will provide Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin with an opportunity to reflect on his leadership style and make necessary adjustments,” he stated.

According to ChannelOne TV on X, Dafeamekpor raised concerns about Afenyo-Markin’s approach to handling parliamentary matters and interactions with colleagues.

“We believe that this recess will offer him the opportunity to review his performance between January and the end of March and see whether there will be opportunities for him to mend the way he handles matters on the floor and also amend the way he conducts affairs among his people and between his people and us,” Dafeamekpor stated.

However, he noted that there are recurring issues with his leadership style since he was once a Majority Leader.

“You recall how, as Majority Leader, he was always holding press conferences even though he was in government. He will take matters to court and will dramatise, and with the slightest matter on the floor, they will walk out sometimes on their own business,” he indicated.

Dafeamekpor also expressed optimism that the recess would allow Afenyo-Markin to reassess his approach and foster better collaboration within Parliament.

African rat detecting mines in Cambodia breaks all records

0

Belgian aid organization APOPO revealed Ronin’s achievements on Friday, World Rat Day, which is marked every year on April 4.

Ronin, an African pouched rat, secured the record after being put to work in August 2021, beating all his peers. The five-year-old rat is the most successful in APOPO’s history going back 25 years.

Ronin is described as “hardworking but also friendly and relaxed.”

APOPO’s Lily said: “Ronin’s success likely comes from his sharp focus, strong work ethic and love of problem-solving. His intelligence and natural curiosity help him stay engaged. Finding landmines is like a fun game to him and no two days are the same,” she added.

The rats are too light to detonate landmines and are able to track down the explosives in landmines faster than traditional metal detectors.

According to APOPO, there are more than 300 so-called HeroRATS working on various projects.

Phanny, Ronin’s handler paid tribute to her charge. “Ronin’s achievements are a testament to the incredible potential of positive reinforcement training. He’s not just an asset; he’s a valued partner and colleague,” she said.

APOPO says it ensures that its rats work for just 30 minutes a day, in the early hours of the morning. This allows them to rest and play the rest of the day. Their work is considered an enrichment activity that keeps their minds and noses stimulated.

Dubawa Investigates Allegations against ECG, Bawumia and Hubtel: See what they found

0

Claim:

A Facebook user alleged that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana, is a co-owner or shareholder of Hubtel, he gets a percentage share from payments made to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) through the app.

Verdict: False! DUBAWA’s checks at the Office of the Registrar General indicate that Bawumia is neither the owner nor beneficial owner of Hubtel. Hubtel is owned by Alexander Adjei Bram and Ernest Kwesi Apenteng.

According to the last ECG Audit report, which is the ECG 2023 financial report, ECG revealed its financial performance and cash flows as of 31 December 2023 under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and in a manner required by the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992).

The audit recorded no payments to Dr Bawumia.

Full Text

Weeks before the 2024 elections, there were allegations that the then vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, owned Hubtel, a digital payment platform, and had entered into an unholy business transaction with Ghana’s electricity company to rip the country off.

That allegation found expression in different forms and on different platforms. An account said to be a trusted source of statistics about Africa @StatsAfric alleged that Bawumia was linked to Hubtel.

Others, including an X user, Nana Yaa Prempeh, shared a link of a political activist alleging that Bawumia owned Hubtel and had entered into a contract with ECG as its payment platform. According to the activist, whatever amount is paid to ECG, a percentage goes to Hubtel, Bawumia’s company.

He added that anytime Hubtel faced financial challenges, it would massage figures on ECG payments and get more money to the detriment of ECG and the Ghanaian taxpayer.

Nana Yaa Prempeh, in sharing the video, also came with a caption, “Wait ooo so Bawumia owns Hubtel in Ghana, and Hubtel is the one in charge of ECG bills collections?”

A popular NDC sympathiser, Marie Afua Amoakwa Boadu, also waded into the controversy, accusing Bawumia and Hubtel of corruption.

This claim has sparked a huge public uproar, raising questions about the company’s ownership structure and alleged illegal transactions that would rip the country off.

Given the controversy, the allegations have triggered a potential loss of money to the taxpayer, and given the potential abuse of office allegation against the then vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, DUBAWA decided to investigate the claim.

• To successfully investigate this claim, DUBAWA had to find out whether Bawumia indeed owned Hubtel

• Whether or not ECG contracted Hubtel as its payment platform. And if it was, when was the contract entered into with the ECG?

Verification

To investigate, DUBAWA checked Hubtel’s website to understand the background of the relationship between the two organisations. According to Hubtel, its business relationship with ECG dates back to 2007. The company then operated as SMSGH and deployed ECG’s first APIs to access postpaid bills and send SMS alerts.

In 2011, the company also managed the nationwide deployment and rollout of ECG’s first-ever point-of-sale devices to collect payment. These business transactions happened when Dr Bawumia was not vice president.

Having received the first license from the Bank of Ghana to operate as an Enhanced Payment Services Provider, Hubtel approached ECG in May of 2022 with unsolicited proposals to offer its billing and payment technology to solve ECG’s numerous commercial challenges.

By July 2022, the ECG Board of Directors launched an aggressive digital transformation plan, which included a proof-of-concept agreement for Hubtel to implement its proposed solutions at no upfront cost to ECG.

To fulfil the proof-of-concept requirements, Hubtel redesigned, developed, and implemented a complete overhaul of ECG’s commercial systems and payment frameworks and also took over the responsibility for processing and securing payments for bills, electricity meter credits, vendor quota purchases, and non-energy invoices.

Ownership Structure of Hubtel

DUBAWA then proceeded to investigate Hubtel’s ownership structure and issues of alleged conflict of interest with ECG.

The researcher first spoke to Cornelis Rouloph Otoo, the Board Secretary and a member of Hubtel’s legal team. Otoo told DUBAWA that the Vice President has no shares or beneficial ownership in the company.

“I can tell you on authority that in terms of the shareholding of Hubtel Ltd., there are two shareholders: Mr Bram and Mr Apenteng. In terms of ultimate beneficial ownership, there are only two ultimate beneficial owners, the same company shareholders. At no point were shares ever held by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, or anybody outside the original shareholders.”

He further explained that Hubtel’s filings under the Companies Act are clear and transparent, showing no evidence of any ownership by the vice president or any other political figure.

Additionally, Alex Bram, a co-founder and shareholder of Hubtel, took to X to reinforce this position, stating unequivocally that he and Ernest Apenteng remain the only shareholders of Hubtel.

“@StatsGH @_GhChronicles Your misinformation cannot alter the history or ownership of Hubtel. Ernest and I remain the only two shareholders to date. Let’s try to be a little more respectful here.”

NPP’s reaction

The researcher also contacted the New Patriotic Party’s General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, who dismissed the claim. According to him, Dr Bawumia has no stake in Hubtel.

“We have always maintained the fact that Dr Bawumia has no stakes in Hubtel, and he isn’t a director or shareholder in that company. Bawumia doesn’t need to take ECG money through Hubtel. These rumours aim to discredit him,” he told DUBAWA.

DUBAWA then got information from some of the claimants to substantiate their evidence. When the researcher contacted Marie Afua Amoakwa-Boadu to provide evidence, she refused to comment.

Hubtel’s Ownership Structure

Not convinced by the responses, DUBAWA proceeded to the Registrar General’s Department under a Right to Information Request. Under Ghana’s Companies Act 2019 (Act 992), companies must disclose their registered shareholders and ultimate beneficial owners to the Department. The Act mandates transparency to prevent hidden ownership and ensure accountability.

Official documents obtained from the Office of the Registrar of Companies through the Right to Information (RTI) law disprove Bawumia’s ownership claim.

Findings from Official Documents

The records from the Registrar of Companies reveal the following:

Company Name: Hubtel Ltd

Incorporation Date: 23rd July 2007

Shareholders: The company is owned by two individuals:

Alexander Adjei Bram (50,500 shares)

Ernest Apenteng (49,500 shares)

Beneficial Owners: The same two individuals, Alexander Adjei Bram and Ernest Apenteng, are listed as the beneficial owners of the company.

Directors of the Company:

Alexander Adjei Bram (Director)

Ernest Apenteng (Director)

Hans Daniel Nilsson (Director)

Patience Akyianu (Director)

Cross-checking Independent Sources

We looked at more public statements and exchanges, such as PitchBook, which listed Chanzo Capital, a venture capital firm headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and an investor at Hubtel. Chanzo Capital is well-known for investing in information technology companies in South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Kenya.

However, one of Hubtel’s lawyers, Cornelis Rouloph Otoo, in an unequivocal response to DUBAWA, stated that Chanzo Capital has not invested in Hubtel.

Also, according to GOV.UK company information Hubtel is a private fund limited partnership.

No public filings, reports, or credible evidence suggest Dr Bawumia’s direct or indirect involvement in Hubtel.

ECG’s Response

Having established the ownership structure, DUBAWA discovered the business relationship between Hubtel and ECG. DUBAWA’s checks reveal that Hubtel and ECG have a business relationship that started in 2007 on a pilot basis. However, the full contract that requires Hubtel to collect all monies on behalf of ECG was completed in March 2023.

In a press statement, Hubtel said, “Since the full launch of the new commercial systems in March 2023, ECG has seen the biggest jumps in its revenues and customer satisfaction ratings.”

Analysis of Financial Reports

To ascertain whether ECG’s finances improved over time, DUBAWA analysed the company’s financial reports before the company, and Hubtel completed their contract agreement in 2024. The analysis also aims to understand the trend.

ECG’s sales revenue was GHC 5,759.872 million in 2019, GHC 6,482.84 million in 2020 (pg 29), GHC 6,969.40million in 2021 (pg 45), GHC 8,156,998 in 2022 and GHC 14,908,577 in 2023 (pg 31).

Table of the ECG Financials from 2019-2023

In the year that ECG signed a full contract with Hubtel, its revenue jumped by over GHC6m to GHC 14,908,577.

Samuel Dubik Masubir Mahama, the former Managing Director of ECG, also explained that Bawumia played no role in the transaction. Bawumia never received money from ECG through Hubtel, which explains the role Hubtel plays in the payment procedure they offer to ECG.

“It’s completely false. False! It’s a blatant lie. It’s a blatant lie.

“So, what they (Hubtel) sought to do for ECG was to provide ECG with a platform where all revenue going to ECG will be seen in real-time. That was the solution they provided. It has nothing to do with the man(Bawumia).”

Some civil Society Organisations have inquisited into the company and demanded an audit of the activities and contract between ECG and Hubtel.

However, Samuel Mahama believes the transaction between ECG and Hubtel has been financially viable.

Conclusion

The claim that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is a co-owner or shareholder of Hubtel is false. Based on authoritative statements from Hubtel’s legal representative and verified shareholders documents from the Office of the Registrar General, there is no evidence to support the allegation that Bawumia receives money from ECG through Hubtel.

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preventing Ghana from becoming a transit hub for opioid trafficking.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to tighten regulations and enhance monitoring to curb illicit drug shipments through the country’s ports.

Speaking after the safe disposal of approximately GH₵20 million worth of seized opioids on Friday, April 4, he commended the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for intercepting the shipment at Tema Port.

He assured the public of the authority’s commitment to strengthen regulatory measures to prevent future occurrences.

“We wanted to ensure the proper and safe disposal of these opioids. That is the only way we can ensure that our youth and citizens will not lay their hands on opioids. We will not end here after the safe disposal of this consignment.

“We are going further to investigate and interrogate the clearing agent and the importer himself or herself. The last time we visited the port, I reiterated that per the laws of this country.

“The Kotoka International Airport and the Tema Port should be used for the import and export of drugs, not our land bodies. We have instructed the security agencies and the customs to impound whatever drugs they get at the land bodies,” he assured.

The Royal Senchi Hotel and Resort has successfully hosted its first-ever golf tournament,

dubbed the Royal Senchi Invitational, to officially launch its newly developed golf course.

The event, held over the past weekend, brought together 26 golfers from prominent golf clubs, including Achimota, Tema, and Sakumono, who gathered to experience the resort’s enhanced golfing facilities.

Attending the event was a collection of C-suite executives from corporate and private sector businesses including Passion Air, Delta Airlines, KLM and Swissport among others, with some taking part in the game. Legal Luminary Justice Emile Short was one of the golfers that partook in the sport.

The tournament festivities began on Friday evening with an engaging lineup of activities such as bingo, gaming and karaoke.

Also, ahead of the main competition on Saturday was a unique night golf session featuring the resort’s exclusive glow-in-the-dark golf balls, which added to the thrill of the evening.

Golfing patrons had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the lush course before the friendly yet competitive round took place the next day.

Previously, the Royal Senchi only had a driving range as part of its recreational offerings.

However, with the development of a full-fledged golf course, the resort has expanded its appeal to both seasoned and amateur golfers.

Nestled within the expansive 35-acre grounds of the resort, the new golf course now stands as a significant addition to Senchi’s list of leisure facilities.

The resort’s management has announced plans to organize periodic events in the future, some of which will be tied to social causes while also promoting healthy living.

Additionally, they have invited enthusiasts of the prestigious sport to visit at any time and make use of the facility, with the assistance of a trained guide available on-site.

The event was climaxed with an awards and dinner ceremony, graced by the presence of Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, king of Akwamu and overlord of the Akwamu Traditional Area.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the top prize by the Akwamuhene to the CEO of Caveman Watches, who secured the most skins in the exhibition match.

Commonwealth Group Gives Thumbs-Up To EC

0

A 16-member Commonwealth Observer Group has described the 2024 general election as ‘transparent, credible and peaceful’.

The independent and multi-disciplinary team deployed by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland KC and led by former President of Botswana, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi that monitored the election said it was a testament to Ghana’s maturing democracy.

The report, however, highlighted some areas of significant strength and also identified opportunities for improvement, including the need for enhanced transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in the electoral process.

The report noted that the establishment of additional polling stations and deployment of temporary polling staff, additional number of polling stations and the capping of the number of voters per polling station to support the conduct of the elections were positive steps in the management of the elections, as it ensured shorter queues and quicker voting times.

The report also reiterated the need for the development of an effective regulatory framework for campaign financing to prevent corruption and increase transparency.

It said the regulatory framework would also help Ghana to avoid opening the political system to the ‘monetisation of politics and the commercialisation of elections’.

The report further noted that delay by the Electoral Commission (EC) in announcing results from the various constituencies created some uncertainty and speculations.

The Group, therefore, urged the EC to address the issue in future elections to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

Patricia Scotland KC, in a statement, said Ghana’s peaceful and credible elections are a testament to the country’s maturing democracy.

“I thank members of the Observer Group for their exceptional work, I urge the national institutions in Ghana to implement the recommendations they have made and thank the people of Ghana for their commitment to democracy,” she stated.

If I were President Mahama, I would ignore ‘noisemaker’ Ntim Fordjour – Kwakye Ofosu

0

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed allegations by Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, regarding a “suspicious aircraft” that landed at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said the claims were baseless and a waste of time.

“If I were President Mahama, I would have ignored noisemaker Ntim Fordjour. He is just lying and wasting everyone’s time. I respect him as my friend, brother, and neighbour, but he is making baseless allegations with no evidence,” he said.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour alleged that two flights—AirMed flight NH23AM and Cavok Air private jet Antonov AN 12 B—landed in Ghana between March 20 and March 25, 2025, carrying suspected cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has since called for investigations.

However, Kwakye Ofosu dismissed the claims, arguing that if the NPP had any proof, they would have presented it publicly.

“If he had evidence, NPP people who love propaganda would have shown videos and pictures. They wouldn’t even wait for an invitation,” he stated.

He also revealed that after the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) invited Rev. Ntim Fordjour for questioning, the MP refused, claiming he was speaking on behalf of a parliamentary committee.

“As we speak, after initially avoiding the invitation, the NIB has now written to the Speaker of Parliament to release him for investigations. When he goes, he should go and waste their time like he is doing to us now,” Kwakye Ofosu added.

He noted that MP cannot make unsubstantiated allegations and escape scrutiny.

“You cannot just wake up and throw out accusations that a plane carried cocaine when you have no evidence to support your claims. We cannot tolerate this,” he insisted.

NACSA calls for swift passage of Arms Bill to strengthen firearm regulations

0

Executive Secretary of NACSA, Dr Adam Bonna Executive Secretary of NACSA, Dr Adam Bonna

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) has stressed the need for the speedy passage of the Arms Bill.

A statement issued on Friday, April 4, 2025, and signed by the Executive Secretary, Dr Adam Bonna noted that the passage of the bill would ensure better compliance to address illegal circulation of small arms.

“NACSA continues to work closely with security agencies and other stakeholders to curb the proliferation of illicit arms and promote responsible firearm ownership in Ghana. It is for this reason that NACSA continues to advocate for the swift passage of the Arms Bill, which seeks to strengthen Ghana’s legal

framework on arms control into law.

“The passage of this bill will enhance regulatory measures, provide

stronger enforcement mechanisms and compliance to address the illicit proliferation of small arms”, it noted.

It also commended the Ghana Police Service for their swift response in investigating and arresting two suspects involved in the discharge of firearms at a funeral in the Western North Region.

“The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) commends the Ghana Police Service for the swift investigation and subsequent arrest of two suspects involved in the reckless discharge of firearms during a funeral at Attakrom near Bibiani in the Western North Region on March 14, 2025.

“Incidents such as the Attakrom shooting highlight the urgent need for greater public awareness and stricter enforcement of Ghana’s firearms regulations to prevent the unlawful possession and misuse of small arms” it indicated.

It further noted that the discharge of firearms in public places endangers lives.

“The reckless display and discharge of firearms in public spaces not only threaten lives but also contribute to a culture of impunity and insecurity”, it added.

Ntim Fordjour threatens to sue Kwakye Ofosu [Video]

0

Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has threatened to take legal action against Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, following remarks made about the investigation into suspicious flights allegedly linked to drug trafficking and money laundering.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Ofosu referred to Rev. Fordjour as a “noisemaker” and suggested that, if he were President Mahama, he would have ignored the Ranking Member of the Interior and Defence Committee. Despite this, Kwakye Ofosu acknowledged the necessity of an investigation into the allegations to set a precedent.

“The investigation is just so that an example will be set, for people to refrain from such behaviour,” he said.

However, Rev. Fordjour, on the same show, strongly rebuked the statement, saying he would not take it lightly.

“I have taken judicial notice of that statement and I am going to sue Kwakye Ofosu. The threat is clear; he is saying they are not interested in investigations but only want to make an example out of me,” Rev. Fordjour asserted. “This is a willful attempt to prosecute and cause harm. These are enough evidence,” he added.

Rev. Fordjour sparked public debate after alleging that two flights—AirMed flight NH23AM and Cavok Air private jet Antonov AN 12 B—landed in Ghana between March 20 and March 25, 2025, carrying suspected cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash. The NPP has since called for investigations into the matter.

Despite President Mahama’s directive for a probe, Rev. Fordjour has insisted that nothing will stop him from exposing the truth.

“I am ready; they can come and make every example they want out of me. I have never seen any government intolerant like this. They can crucify me, jail me for 100 years; we will expose them,” he declared.

KNUST School of Medicine Sciences at 50: Seeks increased investment in medical education

0

The School of Medical Sciences (SMS) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in marking its 50th anniversary, has intensified calls for conscious and dedicated investments in medical education in Ghana.

Despite the growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals, insufficient support keeps medical schools across the country underfunded, affecting infrastructure, equipment, faculty salaries, and other resources.

The government is being admonished to review the fees for medical education, offer special loans for medical students and retool medical schools to address these growing challenges.

Under the theme “A Glance at the Past, A Glimpse into the Future,” the 50th anniversary launch of KNUST SMS assembled key stakeholders, including faculty, alumni, and government officials to celebrate the school’s achievements and reflect on improvement for a better healthcare in Ghana.

Dean of School of Medical Sciences (SMS), Prof. Akwasi Antwi Kusi, pointed to the growing limitations to quality medical education and urged the government and corporate bodies to capitalize medical education.

“The medical field has undergone remarkable transformations over the last 50 years, and it continues to evolve. To stay ahead, we must innovate, invest, and lead. Medical education is expensive in the United States, the average annual cost of medical education is $60,000. In Ghana, it’s 3,000 cedis for regular students and 10,000 cedis for fee-paying students.

“This keeps our medical schools underfunded, affecting infrastructure, equipment, faculty salaries, and resources. I call on the government to review the fees for medical education and offer special loans for medical students, and I urge corporate bodies to invest in medical education,” he said.

With only 26 students in 1975, to 280 students presently, the KNUST Medical School has chalked successes, expanding academic programs over the years and equalizing the male-to-female ratio to one-to-one.

The School of Medical Sciences helped with establishment of other medical schools in Ghana like the Tamale Medical School, and with German partners established the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), becoming a vocal hub of research.

The heart of the success stories is the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, SMS alumni have launched a legacy project to construct a multi-purpose lecture theatre complex at KATH, aimed at addressing the infrastructure challenges.

Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Christian Agyare, lauded the School of Medical Sciences alumni and encouraged them to continuously support their alma mater.

“Your success is a reflection of the foundation you received here. We urge you to uphold the values of excellence, integrity, and compassion in all that you do,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, reinforced the importance of continued investment in the future of medical education.

“As we celebrate this golden jubilee, we must remember that the future demands innovation, investment, and commitment. Let’s all contribute to ensure SMS remains a leader in medical education,” she said.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, shared his experiences during his clinical years and pledged to contribute to the ongoing projects.

“Medical education must align with this vision. The training at SMS should reflect the evolving needs of our healthcare landscape, producing not just doctors, but change-makers and innovators rooted in community service.

“As we celebrate this golden jubilee, let us all, alumni, government, corporate bodies, and the general public, support the Legacy Project: a state-of-the-art lecture complex at Komfo Anokye which I made a personal donation to support this project,” he said.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye expresses frustration over poor maintenance of Bukom Boxing Arena

0

Former sports minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye has voiced his disappointment over the deteriorating condition of the Bukom Boxing Arena, a facility he regards as a key legacy project of the Mahama administration.

The arena, once a beacon of hope for Ghanaian boxing, was established during Vanderpuye’s tenure. However, it has experienced little to no maintenance in recent years, with parts of the facility already falling into disrepair.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Vanderpuye criticized the poor maintenance culture among Ghanaians and expressed concerns that similar neglect could be affecting other major sports facilities.

“I feel so sad when I go to the Bukom Boxing Arena because this was a facility that is a legacy of the John Mahama administration, when I was Minister. After 8 years, it’s almost deteriorated. The pool has been destroyed. I am sure it’s the same with Borteyman and the University of Ghana Stadium,” he lamented.

Despite his concerns, Vanderpuye expressed optimism about the leadership of the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, and the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, showing confidence in their ability to revitalize Ghana’s sports sector.

“I have 100% trust in the Minister of Sports and Recreation, and I have 120% trust in the new Director for the National Sports Authority. All of us are working together to make sure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated,” he added.

GNA Feature by Emmanuel Nyatsikor

Ho, April 4, GNA-As he will be buried on Saturday, April 5, 2025, many people, who have ‘tasted’ the brain power of the Very Reverend Japhet Yao Ledo, a former Moderator of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, (EPCG), would acknowledge his memory as a fountain of knowledge groomed in the semblance of Biblical King Solomon.

The current Clerk of General Assembly of the Church, Rev. Dr. Lawson Kwaku Dzanku describes the late Moderator as a reservoir of knowledge and a great asset to the Church.

The late Very Rev. Ledo, is revered as ‘born a hero and dying a legend,’ according to peers, family and friends.

He was the 10th Moderator of the Church, died at a private health facility in Ho, in the early hours of 30th December, 2024.

His son, Mr. Samuel Ledo, said his father was a “fathers’ father,” who wholeheartedly dedicated his life to serving humanity and lived with integrity, guided by principles that shaped the lives of all , who were fortunate to get closer to him.

“Moderator’s love was deep and unwavering, serving as the cornerstone of his relationship – an anchor in both joy and challenging times.”

Mr. Ledo stated that his father worked tirelessly not for recognition, but to harness, nurture and ensure that those he cherished could dream bigger and live fuller lives.

He said through his actions “he taught us the value of perseverance, kindness and the importance of giving ourselves fully to every endeavour,” were testament of what he knew his father to be.

Early life and education

The Very Rev. Ledo, known for interspersing his sermons and speeches with Proverbs was born on December 27, 1940 at Klefe Demete, near Ho, in the Volta Region to the late Mr. Felix Kodjo Ledo and the late Madam Rebecca Ama Hosi.

He was the second son of his father and the first to his mother.

According to his biography sighted by the Ghana News Agency, his attempt to get enrolled at the Klefe Demete Primary school, at age six in 1946, could not materialize due to his failure to touch his ear, when his hand was passed over his head as was the criteria then.

He finally got enrolled in 1948 after pleading with the then headteacher of the school, the late Mr. G.K. Tsekpo, who granted his wishes.

He entered the Klefe Atsiatime Middle School in 1954 and after three years moved to Dzolo Gborgame, where he successfully completed and obtained his Middle School Leaving Certificate in 1957.

He wrote and passed the Common Entrance Examination and after attending interviews received offers from Accra Academy and Mawuli School, but his father’s lack of understanding of education limited his ability to support young Japhet in pursuing secondary education.

When his dream to pursue secondary education failed, Japhet started a farming company with local young men, which started providing labour services on farms to earn a living until his uncle took him to Hohoe, where he was employed as a shop attendant in a UAC store.

After sometime he was sent to Mr. Larbi, a foreman with the Public Works Department at Kadjebi and was employed as a labourer and also practised carpentry.

He later wrote and passed the Trade Test exam, becoming a recognized professional carpenter.

In early 1962, Japhet desirous to furthering his education, wrote and successfully passed a competitive exam and entered Jasikan Training College, where he graduated in 1966 and was posted to Binduri Middle School, in the current Upper East Region.

After teaching for some time, he entered the Trinity Theological Seminary and successfully graduated with a diploma in theology.

Whiles still at the Seminary, he received an offer to pursue a three year degree in Sociology at the University of Ghana in 1975.

For his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, Japhet took courses in Rural Sociology, Anthropology, Social Development, Industrial Sociology, Social Theory, Medical Sociology and Social in Research and graduated in 1978.

He entered Princeton Theological Seminary in the United States in 1984, where he pursued a Master of Arts degree in Theological studies, specialising in Old Testament and Hebrew with a full scholarship and support from the E.P. Church and graduated in 1986.

Very Rev. Ledo decided to pursue a PhD in African studies at the University of Ghana in 1989, but two years into the programme, he had to pause his studies as he was elected Moderator of the E.P. Church at the Church’s Synod in 1992 and served a two four-year term from 1993 to 2000.

Work Experience

The Vey Rev Ledo, has headed many Educational institutions including the Akpafu Adokor Middle School, the E.P. Trades Training Centre at Alavanyo, the Church’s Seminary at Peki, in 1981 and headed some Church establishments, Bubuashie E.P. Church in Accra as the District Pastor in 1991.

During his time as Moderator, the Church made significant growth in infrastructure development, expansion of the Church’s missionary and evangelical outreaches, especially in the northern part of the country and also the proposal for the establishment of the E.P. University were made under his regime.

Conferences

The late Very Rev. Ledo attended many local, regional and international conferences on behalf of the Church and also worked tirelessly to restore relationships with the Church’s foreign partners including the Bremen Mission, Presbyterian Church, USA, Church of Scotland, Eglise Evangelique Presbyterienne du Togo and United Reform Church.

When his term of office as Moderator ended, he took a six month sabbatical in the USA, where he served as a Senior Pastor of the United Church of Christ in Wooster, Ohio and at the First Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Upon his return to Ghana in June 2001, he became the district Pastor of the Tema E.P. Church, overseeing multiple churches.

The late Very Rev. Ledo retired in 2008 and moved to Ho and worshiped with the SSNIT Flats branch of the Church, where he kept himself active by contributing to his community, and serving as a trusted advisor in various personal, Church and institutional disputes.

He was the chairman of the Mediators Consult, an organization dedicated to mediating personal and institutional conflicts to promote peace.

His mortal remains will be buried at the Missionaries Cemetery at the Church’s headquarters at Ho Kpodzi.

The late Very Rev. Ledo, came with the accolade ‘born a hero and died a legend,’ as testament of life, lived in fullness.

He met and married Mrs. Esther Ledo, nee Esther Akosua Guh and were blessed with three children, two males and a female.

Ntim Fordjour will be arrested if he ignores NIB invitation

0

Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has cautioned that the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Interior and Defence Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, will be arrested if he fails to honour an invitation from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for investigations into allegations of suspicious flights in Ghana.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Friday, April 4, Kwakye Ofosu dismissed Fordjour’s claim that he was never invited.

He stated that the invitation was sent through his leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who initially agreed to facilitate his appearance but later insisted that Fordjour had spoken in his capacity as a member of the Defence and Intelligence Committee rather than as an individual.

Despite this, the NIB has formally requested Fordjour’s presence for questioning.

“If he says he was not invited, it is not true. The NIB has written to the Speaker and asked for his release for investigation. He will definitely go. If he doesn’t, they will arrest him, and when he does, he should present the stories he is telling,” Kwakye Ofosu asserted.

He also criticized Fordjour for making unsubstantiated claims regarding two aircraft allegedly transporting drugs and money into the country.

“The last thing an MP should be doing is peddling such childish lies. They are not just lies; they are childish. How do you claim such things without providing a shred of evidence?” he remarked.

Kwakye Ofosu further accused Fordjour of using Parliament as a tool for propaganda, stating, “He is engaging in childish propaganda. Lies that do not make any sense. If there was any evidence, he would have presented it before anyone invited him.”

The case remains under investigation, with growing pressure on Fordjour to provide evidence or retract his claims.

Delta Air Lines champions women’s leadership in global trade

0

Accra, Ghana: 2 April 2025 – Delta Air Lines, in collaboration with the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) Ghana, hosted its third annual women’s leadership event in Accra on March 28, 2025.

Themed “Breaking Barriers: Women Leading Global Trade,” the event convened over 100 participants, including entrepreneurs, senior executives, and university students, to foster mentorship, knowledge sharing, and professional networking.

This year’s forum marked a strategic shift by incorporating university students from institutions such as Ashesi University and Academic City. This initiative aims to bridge generational knowledge gaps by providing young professionals with direct engagement opportunities with experienced industry leaders.

Eloina Baddoo, General Manager of Delta Air Lines GSA, Ghana, said “This started as a programme celebrating businesswomen, particularly those trading between Ghana and the U.S. Now, it’s a platform for impact. By including students, we ensure the next generation learns from experienced professionals and is prepared to lead the future of business.”

She further encouraged women to assert themselves in traditionally male-dominated industries, underscoring the importance of resilience, strategic positioning, and leadership. “Women must be determined in their pursuit of excellence, even in industries where their presence has been historically limited. We have a rightful place in every sector, and our contributions are indispensable. It is time to challenge conventions, seize opportunities, and redefine leadership in global trade.”

Angela Kyeremateng-Jimoh, CEO of Brainwave AfricaTech Limited, delivered an inspiring keynote address on navigating male-dominated industries and the necessity of continuous reinvention.“Success is not achieved in isolation. If you believe in the path set before you, every moment and challenge is a step toward fulfilling that purpose. Own your space with confidence. Let perceptions and stereotypes exist, but do not be bound by them. Your presence is earned, and your contributions are invaluable.”

She further stressed the importance of lifelong learning and adaptability.“Reinvention is not optional. The competencies that propelled you forward today will not necessarily sustain you tomorrow. Always ask yourself, ‘What’s next?’ and prepare accordingly.”

As a leader in a technology-driven sector, she advocated for the strategic adoption of digital transformation and emerging technologies, highlighting their critical role in operational efficiency, global competitiveness, and data-driven decision-making.

As Delta Air Lines celebrates its centennial anniversary, the airline remains committed to innovation, connectivity, and economic development. Delta’s long-standing investment in Ghana’s aviation sector continues to foster regional connectivity and create economic opportunities.

Reflecting on Delta’s contributions, Ms. Baddoo stated “We are proud to celebrate 100 years of excellence in aviation. Delta’s journey has always been about connecting people and places. For 19 years in Ghana, we have invested significantly, including the introduction of a new Airbus A330-900 on the Accra-New York route. Additionally, in December, we will launch a seasonal flight from Accra to Atlanta.”

Now in its third year, Delta’s women’s leadership event has evolved into a powerful platform for empowering both emerging and established female professionals. This year’s gathering reinforced the importance of knowledge exchange, mentorship, and leadership development. Through structured interactions with seasoned business leaders, participants explored pathways to leadership, entrepreneurship, and international trade.

By hosting such initiatives, Delta Air Lines reaffirms its dedication to advancing gender equity in business and leadership. As the airline marks its 100-year milestone, it remains committed to driving economic inclusion and capacity-building for women in Ghana and beyond.

Delta Air Lines operates daily non-stop service between Accra and New York-JFK and has been a key contributor to Ghana’s aviation sector since 2006. In December, Delta will begin operating a new Accra – Atlanta route as a way of deepening its relations with Ghana.

Roads Minister questions bauxite, manganese haulage on Takoradi road

0

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has questioned the continuous haulage of bauxite and manganese that frequently destroys the Tarkwa, Agona-Nkwanta to Takoradi road.

The Roads Minister, who was inspecting the 33.3 percent completed Agona-Nkwanta to Takoradi road, while commending JUSTMOH Construction for the quality work and commitment to the 24-hour construction model, said no serious country allows such heavy-duty goods to be hauled on expensive roads.

He, therefore, called for a serious discussion to end the haulage of bauxite and manganese by road.

The Agona-Nkwanta to Takoradi road is a 36-month project which started on 19th March 2024 and is currently 12 months into construction. JUSTMOH Construction has done 90 percent of earthworks, 67 culverts, and has completed 56 out of the total 67 culverts, as well as two out of four brigades.
“The difficulty we have is that these trucks use this road that we built with our tax money, and then instead of putting those materials on rails, they transport it on the road. So part of the reason why our roads do not last as long as they should is because of the nature of transportation we do on them,” he stated.
The Project Engineer, Kofi Adjei Frimpong, while briefing the Roads Minister, said JUSTMOH has no problem with construction materials despite delays in payment for work done so far, but pointed out difficulties facing the construction due to inadequate money for compensation.

“One significant hope for this project is that they are recycling the asphalt. We do not have problems with the construction materials so far. On challenges, the compensation is a challenge, the money that was budgeted for the construction. And that has slowed down construction in the town.”

Legendary Ghanaian player Mohammed Polo has said that it is incumbent on the Black Stars players to do their best to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

He stated that former players like Asamoah Gyan and Stephen Appiah took Ghana to the World Cup on different occasions in 2006, 2010, and 2014 during their time, which ought to be safeguarded by the current team.

The former Accra Hearts of Oak player asserted that the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2026 World Cup will make up for their disappointing performances in the 2026 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

“I think the younger ones now have to know that their predecessors have left a legacy that they have to take over. Appiah and Gyan left the team without winning the AFCON, but they qualified for the World Cup several times. So, they have to do everything possible to qualify.

“There’s no way they should lose; they shouldn’t be missing out. We don’t want to see a repeat of the AFCON issue; it should not happen. So, they have to come together, understand each other, and play for Ghana and themselves,” he told JoyNews.

In the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Black Stars defeated Chad 5-0 on March 21, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium and secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Madagascar on March 25, 2025.

After six matches played, Ghana lead Group I with 15 points, followed by Comoros with 12 points, while Madagascar lie in third position with 10 points.

Talent is not enough, seek education

Renowned American rapper Ja Rule has advised Ghanaian musicians and creatives to pursue further education, warning that raw talent alone is no longer enough to thrive in today’s industry.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, Ja Rule, during a visit to the National Museum in Accra, emphasised that continuous learning is essential for creatives to remain relevant in the fast-evolving music sector.

“As creatives and musicians, it’s essential to make education an integral part of your journey. While talent is a great starting point, it’s no longer enough to rely solely on natural ability,” he stated.

“The world needs more than just your talent; it needs exceptional individuals who can elevate their craft through knowledge, skills, and dedication. To stand out in the competitive music industry, you must be willing to continuously learn, grow, and refine your skills.”

He encouraged artists to invest not only in music theory but also in understanding the trends and dynamics of the industry.

“It’s not just about learning music theory or instrumentation; it’s about developing a deeper understanding of the music industry, its trends, and its demands. Investing in your education is investing in your future.

“It’s a commitment to yourself and your craft, and it will pay off in the long run. Don’t just rely on your talent; take the initiative to learn, grow, and become exceptional musicians. The world needs more talented and educated musicians,” he advised.

Ja Rule also highlighted that formal education opens doors to networking, collaborations, and broader career opportunities.

“Furthermore, education will provide opportunities for you to network with other musicians, producers, and industry professionals, potentially leading to new collaborations and career opportunities,” he added.
