There seems to be conflict about who represents Wontumi – Dr Kojo Asante

0

Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has suggested internal disagreements within the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s legal team regarding the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

Dr. Kojo Asante argues that this conflict over legal representation, which contributed to the prolonged detention of Wontumi by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), needs to be addressed.

Until Friday, his legal team had only been able to secure one surety.

Mr Appiah-Kubi, however, confirmed that despite having met all bail conditions, his client will not be going home yet due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

That other development was a motion filed by NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako, seeking a review of the bail conditions imposed on him by EOCO.

Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, May 31, Dr. Asante noted that conflicting legal strategies from different NPP lawyers appear to have complicated efforts to secure Wontumi’s release.

“From what has happened with Andy Appiah Kubi and what Gary Nimako went to do, it seems like there is a conflict on who exactly is representing Wontumi, and that is what has complicated the matter,” he said.

Dr. Asante explained that while one legal team, led by Andy Appiah Kubi, had attempted to meet bail conditions set by EOCO, another faction within the NPP preferred a more aggressive legal challenge, deeming the detention unjust.

“Appiah Kubi was trying to meet the bail conditions—that was the strategy, as they felt confident they could meet the low condition. He thought that as of yesterday night, that could have been addressed. Then there was other legal representation, more from the party, who thought it was outrageous and wanted to challenge it, but they waited,” he stated.

The CDD-Ghana researcher speculated that this internal conflict within the NPP legal team may have inadvertently delayed Wontumi’s release, prolonging his stay in EOCO custody.

Her recognition highlights the increasing value placed on long-term, impact-driven leadership—an area drawing growing attention from development partners and corporate CSR portfolios.

Other standout honours went to Martha Opoku Agyemang in health, Adangabey Yaw Rockson, founder of Adangabey Royal School, in education, and Sakina Mumuni for economic empowerment.

Each received GHS 60,000 and a commemorative plaque, reinforcing the importance of local innovation in critical development sectors.

In his remarks, CEO of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, highlighted the transformative role of technology in addressing social challenges.

“For us the rhythm of our business has changed and we are happy to change our steps to culminate such change. At MTN we believe the future of our nation and our continent lays with digital innovation, access and empowerment,” he said.

A key feature this year was the introduction of the Media Hero and Digital Hero categories, spotlighting institutional and tech-driven contributions to social good. The Citi FM Foundation, CSR arm of Citi FM and Channel One TV, received the Media Hero award along with GHS 30,000, a citation, and a plaque.

The Foundation was recognised for leveraging media to not only report on, but also directly intervene in, pressing community challenges—a model increasingly relevant in purpose-led business strategies.

General Manager of Citi FM and Channel One TV, Bernard Avle, speaking on the sidelines of the event, recounted how the media house and its audience swiftly mobilized support for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage—one of several impactful social interventions led by the station—and promised the media house’s continued commitment to championing causes that uplift communities.

“Our responsiveness is very key to us. Even on our normal programming people reach out to us and we follow up. So for us it is relevant radio and impactful and empowering television.”

In the digital category, Nana Tea and the Bus Stop Boys were jointly awarded GHS 30,000 each for using social media to mobilise support for the underprivileged, reflecting the growing influence of grassroots digital advocacy in shaping public impact.

A Smokeless Future for Ghana: Why World Vape Day 2025 Marks a Turning Point in Tobacco Harm Reduction

0

This year’s World Vape Day marks a significant milestone, two decades since the emergence of vaping technology as a transformative tool in global tobacco harm reduction efforts. Modern vaping devices were first developed in China in 2003 as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, delivering nicotine through vapour rather than combustion. By 2005, these products began entering markets in Europe and the United States, quickly gaining popularity among smokers seeking less harmful alternatives.

The scientific evidence supporting smokeless products as effective harm reduction tools is strong. Decades of research have demonstrated that the primary health hazard of smoking lies in the toxic substances produced during combustion. Products such as vapour devices, heated tobacco products, and nicotine pouches eliminate combustion entirely, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals by an estimated 90% to 99% compared to conventional cigarettes.

Ghana is at a pivotal point in its public health journey. The country needs forward-thinking, science-based policies to effectively address tobacco use and reduce health burdens.

Recognising and regulating existing vaping products on the market is an essential step. Ghana requires an amendment to its Public Health Act (PHA) to explicitly acknowledge vaping devices and other low-risk nicotine products, establishing a clear legal framework that ensures safety, quality standards, and appropriate access.

It is vital to emphasise that this approach is not about encouraging nicotine use among non-smokers or youth. Instead, it offers adult smokers a significantly less harmful alternative, empowering informed choices and supporting health improvement. Accessible, well-regulated THR products, coupled with accurate, evidence-based information, can become valuable tools in Ghana’s public health toolkit. This is not an abandonment of traditional tobacco control measures; rather, it is a strategic evolution designed to meet people where they are, with science-backed solutions.

Countries that have embraced modern regulatory approaches are already witnessing positive outcomes. Sweden’s long-standing use of oral tobacco like snus has contributed to the country having the lowest smoking rates in the European Union and some of the lowest lung cancer and smoking-related death rates. Similarly, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and the United States have seen reductions in smoking prevalence and tobacco-related harm through balanced regulation and public education, recognising the importance of providing smokers with reduced-risk alternatives.

For Ghana, the opportunity exists to implement a comprehensive, evidence-based regulatory framework that allows for the lawful recognition and oversight of vaping products. Such regulation can help curb illicit trade, ensure product safety, and prevent underage access. It is crucial that enforcement measures are robust and that consumer protection remains a priority.

Public education is equally important. Clear, unbiased information about the relative risks of smoking versus using vaping or other smokeless products helps adults make informed, healthier decisions. Building trust and open dialogue among scientists, policymakers, public health officials, and industry stakeholders will ensure Ghana’s policies are tailored to its social realities and health needs.

On this Vape Day, Ghana can demonstrate leadership by advancing policies that recognise the role of regulated vaping products in reducing harm.

The scientific consensus confirms that providing adult smokers with access to safer alternatives can significantly reduce the health impacts of tobacco use. This moment is an opportunity to set a path that prioritises health, evidence, and innovation shaping a future in which fewer Ghanaians suffer from tobacco-related diseases.

Let this be the moment Ghana chooses a health-focused, science-based path forward.

NPP General Secretary ‘scolds’ Nyaho Tamakloe over lack of empathy for detained Wontumi

0

Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe is a founding member of the NPP Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe is a founding member of the NPP

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has strongly rebuked founding member Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, for his recent critical remarks regarding the party’s leadership and response to the arrest of Chairman Wontumi.

His reaction follows statements made by Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe during an interview with JoyNews on May 30, 2025, that “where is the NPP National Chairman” – suggesting an apparent absence of the NPP leadership in the brouhaha surrounding the arrest and subsequent detention of Wontumi at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters.

Responding to these claims on JoyNews on May 30, 2025, Justin Kodua expressed surprise and disappointment at Dr Tamakloe’s assertion that the party “currently has no leadership.”

He specifically took issue with Dr Tamakloe’s perceived lack of concern over the manner of Chairman Wontumi’s arrest.

“I am very surprised that Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of our party, chose not to criticise the manner in which Chairman Wontumi was arrested,” Kodua stated.

“He saw nothing wrong with the rough and rambo style our Chairman was taken into custody. That in itself is troubling.” He added.

He also underscored the significant challenges the party has since faced in meeting Chairman Wontumi’s stringent bail conditions.

“As I speak, they have imposed unreasonable bail conditions which we are finding very difficult to meet,” he explained.

Justin Kodua found it surprising that a founding member of the party does not sympathise with the trauma, issues, and the challenges that the party is going through, but instead chooses to criticise the very party he helped to establish.

The General Secretary also challenged Dr Tamakloe’s allusions to past party leaders, suggesting they would have acted differently.

“I’m even more surprised that he refers to former chairpersons as though they would have done the same,” Kodua remarked.

“If those people truly respected the rule of law, most of them being constitutional lawyers—they wouldn’t have stayed silent. They would have spoken out and supported our members who have been taken to the NIB and EOCO,” he added.

Describing the current situation as “deeply concerning and unacceptable,” Kodua condemned Chairman Wontumi’s prolonged detention and the “outrageous bail conditions.”

“We have detained a citizen of this country from Tuesday to Friday, and he’s facing outrageous bail conditions. If this is not political persecution, then what else is it?” he questioned.

Justin Kodua concluded by affirming the party’s right to protest and demand justice.

“We want the world to know what is happening in Ghana and what is happening to our Chairman. We have every right to demonstrate our displeasure,” he stated.

“Yes, we can go to court as an option but nothing also stops us from going to the EOCO headquarters to solidarise with our Regional Chairman,” he said.

Avoid party colors on National Day of Prayer – Afriyie-Ankrah warns

0

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Chairman of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving Committee, has cautioned Ghanaians against wearing political party attire to the upcoming National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

He emphasised that the event is intended to promote unity, inclusiveness, and a collective commitment to building a prosperous and peaceful Ghana for future generations, not political division.

“The attire must be white, celebratory, featuring national colours but no party colours,” he stressed.

Speaking at the media launch of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving in Accra on Friday, May 30, Afriyie Ankrah outlined the vision and significance of the occasion. The event, themed “Reflect, Reset, and Renew for National Prosperity,” is scheduled to take place on July 1, 2025.

He explained that the day is designed to bring together Christians, Muslims, and practitioners of other faiths in a unified act of reflection, renewal, and commitment to national harmony and development.

As part of the day’s activities, the Christian segment will be held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Muslim prayers will follow this at the National Mosque from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM.

Highlighting the purpose behind the national observance, Afriyie Ankrah described the institution of July 1 as a “bold and unifying decision,” inviting all Ghanaians, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation, to gather in gratitude and hope.

“This is a sacred moment. We are called to reflect on where we’ve come from as a people our triumphs, mistakes, resilience, and potential.”

He urged citizens to see the day as a challenge to reset the nation’s mindset, moving away from a culture of blame, greed, and apathy, and embracing truth, discipline, and shared responsibility.

“This event is a call to national humility, which transcends religious boundaries. Whether you are Christian, Muslim, or a practitioner of Traditional beliefs, lift your prayers to your God and seek divine favour for Ghana,” he continued.

Afriyie Ankrah noted that although religious practices may differ, the shared hope for a better Ghana unites all.

He also called on the media to play a vital role in promoting the initiative, urging them to use their platforms to support what he described as a patriotic, not political or profit-driven cause.

“You are the loudspeakers of the nation. You shape the national conversation and influence hearts and minds daily. We are asking every media house from radio to television, from print to online, to lend their platforms to this cause,” he said.

“Help us carry this message of hope, reflection, and renewal across every region and every home. Let July 1 not just be another date, let it be the beginning of a spiritual and moral revival in this land,” he added.

Sunyani Central Rotary Club hands over 10 mechanized boreholes and 60 microflushed toilets

0

The Sunyani Central Rotary Club has made a significant impact in the Bono Region by handing over 10 mechanised boreholes and 60 micro-flushed toilet facilities to various communities, institutions, and individuals.

This generous project, valued at $82,500, was made possible through partnerships with the Rotary Foundation, Rotary District 7770, Rotary District 9104, and the Rotary Club of Farmville, USA.

This project aims to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities, enhancing the health and well-being of the beneficiaries.

Some of the communities and institutions that benefited from the provision of mechanised boreholes and microflushed toilets included Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Sunyani, Atuahenekrom MA Basic School, Atronie Methodist Basic School and Nwowasu Community.

The rest were SDA Basic School, Sunyani, St Ambrose College of Education, Dormaa Akwamu, St Joseph’s Catholic Basic School, Krosua Number 2, Timber-Nkwanta and Mensahkrom.

President of the Sunyani Central Rotary Club, Ing Professor Jones Louis Arthur, in an interview, said, ” What we are doing is to help humanity, which is part of our mandate. There are still many dotted communities in the Bono Region that have challenges with water and sanitation. We will contribute our quota to ensure people get potable water to drink.”

Ing Professor Arthur encouraged people to join the club, and he dispelled the notion that the club is a cult.

“I am an Adventist. However, I am a member of the club. The club is not an occultic club as people perceive. We do our things in the open, and I encourage people to join.”

The headmaster of Atuahenekrom MA Basic School, Kwadwo Asante, expressed appreciation for the provision of a mechanised borehole for the school.

“Water was a big challenge for the school, pupils have to go home whenever they come to school, and they are taste. The provision of this mechanised borehole will improve sanitation in the school and also stop the practice of pupils always going home to drink water.”

Florence Dabuo, the administrator at the Abesim Health Centre, on her part, was grateful to the club for the gesture.

“The provision of this water system has come at the appropriate time as it goes a long way to greatly improve our water as we attend to our clients,” she said.

US to double tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to 50%

0

President Donald Trump has announced the US will double its current tariff rate on steel and aluminium imports from 25% to 50%, starting on Wednesday, June 4.

Speaking at a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Trump said the move would help boost the local steel industry and national supply, while reducing reliance on China.

Trump also stated that $14 billion would be invested in the area’s steel production through a partnership between US Steel and Japan’s Nippon Steel, although he later told reporters he had yet to see or approve the final deal.

The announcement marks the latest turn in Trump’s rollercoaster approach to tariffs since returning to office in January.

“There will be no layoffs and no outsourcing whatsoever, and every US steelworker will soon receive a well-deserved $5,000 bonus,” Trump told the crowd, filled with steelworkers, to raucous applause.

One of the major concerns from steelworkers about the US-Japan trade deal was how Japan would honour the workers’ union contract, which regulates pay and hiring.

Trump began his remarks by saying he had “saved” US Steel, America’s biggest steel manufacturer, located in Pittsburgh, with the 25% tariffs he implemented during his first term as president in 2018.

Both sales and profits at US Steel have been falling in recent years.

Trump touted the increase to 50% as a way to ensure US Steel’s survival.

“At 50%, they can no longer get over the fence,” he said. “We are once again going to put Pennsylvania steel into the backbone of America, like never before.”

US steel manufacturing has been declining in recent years, and China, India and Japan have pulled ahead as the world’s top producers. Roughly a quarter of all steel used in the US is imported, and the country’s reliance on Mexican and Canadian steel has angered Trump.

The announcement comes amid a court battle over the legality of some of Trump’s global tariffs, which an appeals court has allowed to continue after the Court of International Trade ordered the administration to halt the taxes.

His tariffs on steel and aluminium were untouched by the lawsuit.

“It is a good day for steelworkers,” JoJo Burgess, a member of the local United Steelworkers union who was at Trump’s rally, told the BBC.

Mr Burgess, who is also the city mayor of nearby Washington, Pennsylvania, expressed optimism over the reported details of the partnership with Nippon Steel, saying he hoped it would help breed a new generation of steel workers in the area.

He recalled “making a lot of money” in the years after Trump instituted steel tariffs in his first term.

Although Burgess would not label himself a Trump supporter, and says he has only voted for Democratic nominees for president in the last two decades, he said: “I’m never going to disagree with something that’s going to level the playing field for American manufacturing.”

But so far, the impacts of Trump’s tariffs have largely led to global economic chaos. Global trade and markets have been upended, and cracks have formed – or widened – in relations between the US and other countries, including some of its closest partners.

The levies have strained relations between China and the US, the world’s two biggest global economies, and launched the countries into a tit-for-tat trade battle.

“We went to a village to make one of my movies and a woman asked me where I got my spiritual powers from,” Ado explained during the interview with Kunle Afod.

Ado told the woman he had no spiritual powers. This response surprised her.

“I told the woman that I don’t have any spiritual power and she started laughing at me,” he said.

The woman explained her confusion. She thought Ado was spiritually powerful because of the roles he plays in movies.

“She said she thought I’m a very powerful person because I play the role of herbalist in movies,” Ado recalled.

After this conversation, the woman made an unexpected offer. She invited Ado to join a cult group, claiming it would help his acting career.

“A woman asked me to pay 300 naira to join cult group so I can continue to be a famous actor,” the actor revealed.

The amount requested was 300 naira. The woman suggested that joining this group would ensure his continued fame as an actor.

Ado did not accept the offer immediately. Instead, he gave a diplomatic response to end the conversation.

“I told her I would think about it, and that was how we ended the discussion since that time,” he said.

The actor’s story highlights a common misconception people have about Nollywood actors. Many viewers cannot separate actors from the characters they play on screen.

In Yoruba movies, Ado often plays the role of a herbalist or traditional medicine practitioner. These characters typically display supernatural powers in films. Some viewers believe the actors possess these powers in real life.

The woman’s offer to help Ado join a cult for just 300 naira raises questions. Secret societies and cult groups exist in various forms across Nigeria. Some people believe joining such groups brings power, wealth, or fame.

However, legitimate success in Nollywood comes from talent, hard work, and professional connections, not cult membership. Successful actors build their careers through auditions, networking, and improving their craft.

Ado’s experience shows how some people try to exploit actors’ desire for continued success. The woman likely saw an opportunity to recruit him or take his money.

The actor’s response was wise. By saying he would think about it, he avoided direct confrontation while rejecting the offer. This approach prevented potential conflict or danger.

The actor has maintained his successful career without joining any cult groups. His continued presence in Yoruba movies proves that talent and professionalism matter more than alleged spiritual connections.

Wontumi’s EOCO arrest and detention violates constitution – Hassan Tampuli

0

Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, is not enthused by the arrest and continued detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

According to the NPP legislator, the move is unconstitutional.

Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, May 31, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislator argued that Wontumi’s detention beyond the legally mandated 48-hour period violates Article 14 (3) of the 1992 Constitution, which safeguards personal liberty.

“What does the law say? Is his continued detention, restriction, and arrest contrary to the law? Yes, it is. It violates and contaminates Article 14 (3) of the 1992 Constitution,” Mr Tampuli stated.

The MP further suggested that the prolonged detention smacks of political persecution, questioning the motives behind EOCO’s actions.

Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, was re-arrested by EOCO after leaving Police CID earlier this week over allegations of financial crimes, though details of the charges remain unclear.

Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, the legal representative for Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has declared his intention to focus solely on legal processes to secure his client’s release, vowing to “stay out of the politics and the theatrics.”

Chairman Wontumi is currently in detention by the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) for allegedly causing financial loss to the state.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with JoyNews on Friday, May 30, shortly after an attempt to secure Chairman Wontumi’s release, his lawyer emphasised a commitment to working strictly “within the law”.

“I beg you, all of you; I will stay out of the politics and the theatrics and I’ll do the work within the law,” he stated, seemingly addressing the heightened political tension surrounding his client’s detention.

The lawyer confirmed a significant breakthrough in meeting the bail conditions, stating, “We have been able to provide the sureties; that one I can assure you.”

At the same time, he has also filed an application at the High Court to vary the bail conditions presented by EOCO.

Mr Appiah-Kubi expressed gratitude to “Honourable Bryan Acheampong” for his support in filing the necessary documents, noting that the provided properties were “over and above the value of money that is required.”

Despite successfully presenting the sureties, Chairman Wontumi will not be going home soon and will likely spend the weekend in detention.

His lawyer revealed a sudden “legal challenge” that has emerged.

“We encountered a challenge… a legal challenge unknown to me; there was an application… that prohibits us,” he explained.

The lawyer indicated that this new application, “not filed by my good self”, will be addressed on Monday.

His comments follow two days of protests by NPP party members demanding the release of Chairman Wontumi.

The protests, which began with a march from Parliament to EOCO’s head office in Accra on Thursday, escalated as Minority MPs, led by their Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, sat on the floor in symbolic defiance of what they described as “unreasonable” bail conditions imposed on their embattled colleague.

Chairman Wontumi, who was arrested earlier this week and interrogated by EOCO, was later granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified, a condition party members claim is excessive and politically motivated.

Wontumi meets EOCO’s GH₵50m bail conditions, but remains in custody

Chairman Wontumi has been in custody since Tuesday Chairman Wontumi has been in custody since Tuesday

The legal team of the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has confirmed that they have fulfilled the GH₵50 million bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

In an interview on Friday, May 30, 2025, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi told JoyNews that all necessary documentation for the two sureties has been completed, with significant assistance from former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

“We have been able to provide the sureties, that one, I can assure you, and I’m very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me to file the documents,” Appiah-Kubi said.

He added, “He has brought his documents, which go over and above the value of money that is required. So I thank you very much.”

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, requiring GH₵50 million with two justified sureties, following his arrest by EOCO on suspicions of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. Until Friday, his team had only secured one surety.

However, Appiah-Kubi revealed that despite meeting the bail conditions, Wontumi’s release is stalled due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can go forward,” he explained.

“Unknown to me, there was an application to frustrate what we are doing, so we will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by my good self, but that prohibits us,” Appiah-Kubi noted.

He disclosed that EOCO officers were prepared to inspect the properties listed by the sureties, but the pending court application legally prevents them from proceeding until the issue is resolved.

“They had agreed to do the inspection tonight, so all the officers are there, but the challenge that I faced is legal. We can’t do it,” he said.

Appiah-Kubi also addressed confusion over Wontumi’s whereabouts, contradicting earlier claims by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Regarding Wontumi’s health, he dismissed rumours of a hunger strike and confirmed that Wontumi is receiving medical attention.

“We had brought him to meet with the former Vice President, but the situation we saw was difficult—to arrange this meeting, to pass through the crowd, to get the Vice President to see him and talk to him. So we had to take him back,” he recounted.

“I told you that his condition of health requires attention. So he’s receiving attention, and there’s nothing to worry about in respect of his health,” Appiah-Kubi assured.

The lawyer remains optimistic that once the court matter is resolved, Chairman Wontumi will be released by Monday, June 2.

Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has unveiled the government’s plans to promote digital inclusivity for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

He acknowledged that global and local initiatives aimed at promoting digitalisation often sidelined individuals with various impairments or difficulties.

The minister unveiled the plans at the grand finale of the “Tekyerma Pa” Hackathon 2025.

This landmark event was dedicated to advancing Artificial Intelligence (Al) for inclusive communication in Ghanaian languages, with a special focus on supporting individuals with speech impairments.

Four tertiary institutions and a team from the industry competed for honours.

“Kasa Noma” from the University of Environment and Sustainable Development secured the first position, while Whisper Wave from the industry secured the second position, and Twilight from the University of Ghana came third.

In Ghana, digital exclusion presents significant challenges for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), hindering their full participation in an increasingly digitized society.

I Will Use Empress Gifty’s Trademark and There Is Nothing You Can Do – Agradaa to Hopeson Adorye

Founder of Heaven Way Ministries, Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has fiercely responded to Hopeson Adorye, husband of gospel singer Empress Gifty, following a heated social media exchange.

On May 20, 2025, Hopeson Adorye issued a warning to Agradaa via a video, cautioning her against using his wife’s popular trademark phrase, “Noko Fine.” He accused the evangelist of unlawfully claiming the phrase and warned of serious consequences if she continued to mention it. “Agradaa says she’s the gazetted ‘Noko Fine.’ Let her dare say it again and she’ll see,” he said.

Agradaa, however, did not back down. In a fiery response, she dismissed the warning, insisting that she had legally claimed the phrase. She hurled insults at Adorye and challenged him to take action. “The ‘Noko Fine’ is mine. It’s gazetted. Hopeson Adorye, you are a fool. Mentioning the name again, and there’s nothing you can do,” she declared.

Meanwhile, Empress Gifty has filed a GH₵20 million defamation suit against Agradaa over a live video in which the evangelist allegedly made derogatory remarks about the gospel singer and her husband.

The feud has drawn widespread attention online, with many Ghanaians weighing in on the unfolding drama.

‘Suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo is not above the law’ – Prof Gyampo

0

Prof Ransford Gyampo is the Acting CEO of Ghana Shippers Authority Prof Ransford Gyampo is the Acting CEO of Ghana Shippers Authority

Acting CEO of Ghana Shippers Authority, Prof Ransford Gyampo, has weighed in on the ongoing legal challenges faced by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, asserting that the law must take its course regardless of her position.

Speaking on TV3’s “Key Points” on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Prof Gyampo stated that she must go through laid down procedures rooted in the laws governing the country.

“If she is wrong, the law must act; if she is not, the law must act. Araba is not above the laws of Ghana,” he said.

He emphasised that if any untoward actions are established, she must face the consequences.

Meanwhile, Dr Joshua Zebuntie Zaato, a Political Scientist at the University of Ghana, has expressed dismay at the silence of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) regarding Chief Justice Torkornoo’s struggles.

He questioned whether their silence implies complicity, suggesting that “history will remember that a Chief Justice fought an ‘unfair’ process to get her removed, but her own association kept quiet.”

Dr Zaato described her legal fight against the removal process as “virtuous”.

“She is fighting with honour and integrity, she will go, but history will remember that she fought to the last end,” he said.

These reactions come after the Supreme Court unanimously dismissed Chief Justice Torkornoo’s injunction application on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

She had sought to halt the proceedings of a six-member presidential committee investigating petitions for her removal from office.

Her application which was filed on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, aimed to restrain the committee, established by President John Mahama, from continuing its inquiry until her substantive case is resolved.

Chief Justice Torkornoo, specifically, requested the disqualification of Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, along with other committee members including Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazuwaaruah Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dziasah, from participating in or presiding over the committee’s deliberations.

The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to dismiss the application marks a significant development in the high-profile legal battle surrounding Chief Justice Torkornoo’s suspension and the constitutional questions it raises.

The full written ruling from the Supreme Court is anticipated to be released on June 12, 2025.

Corporal Dunstan Guba of the Ghana Police Service placed 3rd at the INTERPOL Digital Security Challenge 2025

Ghana’s ascent in the global cybersecurity arena gained significant momentum this week as Corporal Dunstan Guba of the Ghana Police Service clinched a remarkable silver medal, placing 3rd overall, at the highly prestigious INTERPOL Digital Security Challenge 2025.

The intense, three-day, non-stop “Capture the Flag” (CTF) competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, brought together a curated assembly of over 100 elite white-hat hackers from law enforcement agencies representing more than 60 countries worldwide.

Corporal Guba’s performance is a testament to Ghana’s rapidly evolving capabilities in combating sophisticated digital threats.

The gruelling competition simulated real-world cybercrime scenarios, testing participants’ advanced skills in areas such as digital forensics, network penetration, vulnerability assessment, and incident response under immense pressure.

Participants navigated complex digital environments, attempting to identify and exploit weaknesses while simultaneously defending their own systems.

“I was honoured to have represented Ghana and the Ghana Police Service and demonstrated our offensive and defensive cyber capabilities in fighting cybercrime on an international stage,” Corporal Guba shared in a triumphant Facebook post, reflecting the immense pride his achievement has brought to the nation.

This achievement aligns with the nation’s strategic efforts to fortify its cyber defence infrastructure, a critical component of its national security agenda.

Ghana’s consistent presence and strong showings at such international forums are not accidental; they are a direct outcome of robust capacity-building initiatives.

For instance, Ghana’s participation in these high-stakes events is significantly bolstered by collaborative global partnerships, notably the Council of Europe’s Global Action on Cybercrime Extended (GLACY+) project.

This initiative has been instrumental in facilitating Ghanaian law enforcement personnel’s involvement in cutting-edge cybersecurity training and competitions.

Previously, in the 2024 Digital Security Challenge held in Cebu, Philippines, Ghanaian participants were integral members of a multinational team that also secured a commendable 3rd place finish.

Corporal Guba’s brilliance at the 2025 challenge elevates Ghana’s already impressive track record in international cybersecurity competitions, underscoring the nation’s unwavering commitment to mitigating evolving cyber threats.

The INTERPOL Digital Security Challenge remains a crucial crucible for fostering cross-border collaboration and accelerating skill development among global law enforcement agencies, with Ghana’s consistent and strong presence highlighting its increasingly vital role in shaping the future of global cyber defense. The nation’s investment in human capital in this critical domain is clearly yielding tangible results on the world stage.

Cyberbullying and sabotage claim false

Former co-host of Rants, Bants, and Confessions podcast, Gisela Amponsah Former co-host of Rants, Bants, and Confessions podcast, Gisela Amponsah

Following recent allegations by former co-host of Rants, Bants, and Confessions podcast, Gisela Amponsah, regarding being set up for cyberbullying and exploitation, Glitch Africa has taken to social media to deny the accusations.

One would recall that Gisela Amponsah, during a recent appearance on ‘The Creative Inc YouTube’ channel with her best friend Ama Burland, alleged that producers at Glitch Africa intentionally paid bloggers to circulate negative commentary about them.

According to Gisela, the alleged strategy was aimed at stirring controversy and driving attention to the podcast.

However, in a new development, Glitch Africa has publicly responded to the claims, describing them as entirely false and baseless.

In a press statement issued on May 30, 2025, Glitch Africa stated that all hosts, both past and present, were given access to podcast trailers before they were released to the public, suggesting a transparent and collaborative process.

“There is absolutely no iota of truth in that video. Not a single host was denied the opportunity to review content before episodes went public. All hosts, past and present, had access to trailers and cuts via a designated internal group for feedback.

“Multiple episodes were pulled entirely or edited based on the host’s emotional well-being. There is no unreleased episode where a host felt sad and disrespected,” the statement reads.

On the allegations that producers of the show pay bloggers to bully hosts on social media, Glitch Africa also debunked such claims.

“No blog has ever published content before the hosts saw it. Timeless can be checked. The said toxic blogger who had previously targeted one host, was due to a longstanding personal issue unrelated to Glitch Africa. When we noticed it, we asked the blogger to stop and they did multiple times,” it said.

Chairman Wontumi spends weekend in EOCO custody amid legal battle

0

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, will remain in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the weekend, according to reports.

His anticipated release on Friday was stalled by a last-minute application for a variation of his bail conditions filed at the High Court.

Chairman Wontumi’s legal team, led by lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, had submitted property documents through Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, to satisfy the GH¢50 million bail bond imposed by EOCO.

Reports indicate that Bryan Acheampong’s title documents were valued above the required threshold.

However, EOCO officers were unable to proceed with verifying the documents after being informed of a new application requesting a review of the bail terms.

Appiah-Kubi told journalists that he only became aware of the bail variation application, filed on May 30, 2025, late Friday evening. This unexpected development disrupted the process of validating Acheampong’s documents.

As a result, Chairman Wontumi will remain in EOCO custody until the High Court rules on the application, which was filed by legal practitioner Gary Nimako Marfo.

The hearing for this application is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Currently, Nimako Marfo has the option to withdraw his application for bail review, since Chairman Wontumi has already secured a surety through Appiah-Kubi.

This would clear the way for EOCO officers to vet Acheampong’s documents on Monday, June 2, 2025, potentially leading to Chairman Wontumi’s release on bail while investigations continue.

Allegations and ongoing investigations

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation for several serious criminal offenses, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Dr Justice Srem-Sai, the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, confirmed these investigations on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

According to the Deputy AG, these criminal investigations are running concurrently with efforts to recover assets, aiming to prevent the dissipation of suspected proceeds from crime.

Dr Srem-Sai also hinted at a second line of inquiry involving Chairman Wontumi’s alleged role in a broader international organised crime scheme, indicating that EOCO is collaborating closely with international law enforcement partners.

Chairman Wontumi has now spent three nights in custody due to his inability to meet the initial bail conditions.

He was granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified.

This requires him to present either bank statements or proof of title to landed properties equivalent to the bail bond value, assuring EOCO of his availability for investigations. If he fails to appear, the surety or sureties would forfeit the bail bond to the state.

Political support and concerns

On Friday, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia visited the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters, where Chairman Wontumi is being held.

After spending over 30 minutes there, Dr. Bawumia urged supporters of the NPP to remain calm, emphasising that efforts were underway to meet the bail conditions.

Dr Bawumia described the GH¢50 million bail bond set by EOCO as exorbitant, suggesting it was intentionally imposed to keep Chairman Wontumi in custody indefinitely.

“Remain calm and don’t take the law into your own hands. We are following due process to make sure we execute the bail,” Dr Bawumia told supporters.

He was accompanied by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, along with other Members of Parliament and NPP leaders.

Government threatens fines if telcos fail to deliver quality service

0

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has put telecom operators on notice: deliver better service or pay the price.

Speaking at a high-level meeting with the CEOs and technical teams of MTN, Telecel, and AT on Friday, May 30, Mr. George warned that operators who fail to improve network performance by the end of the year will face regulatory sanctions.

“We are not dealing in sentiments; we are dealing in engineering,” he said. “If you have infrastructure in place but your service is poor, we must begin to take regulatory action.”

The warning follows a National Communications Authority (NCA) report on 48 localities across Ghana, which highlighted widespread inconsistencies in service quality.

Even in economically significant areas like East Legon and Amasaman, users experience call drops, poor data speeds, and network blackouts.

By June 30, telcos must accept the newly allocated spectrum—resources the minister insists should result in visible improvements before December.

Fines, if imposed, will not stay with regulators; 40 percent will go back to customers as compensation, either through bonus data or call time.

“We know you can’t complete upgrades in three months, but we must see that the process has begun,” Mr. George stressed. “The Ghanaian people must feel the impact of the spectrum rollout by the end of this year.”

In response, MTN Ghana revealed plans to invest $230 million this year, with an internal GH¢25 million budget set aside to recruit frontline staff and expand service centers.

Telecel, for its part, is ramping up shop expansion and continuing network optimization. AT’s CEO promised visible improvements by the first quarter of next year, urging the public to judge the changes for themselves.

We’ve followed due process; critics blowing matters out of proportion – EOCO

0

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has defended its handling of the arrest and detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to the EOCO’s Ashanti Regional Director, Edward Cudjoe, critics are exaggerating the situation and that the agency has adhered to legal procedures in granting bail.

“I think that the institution has followed the laid down processes, and if you hear from the commentary, his legal representatives are telling you that due process has been followed. It’s only those who are on the other side who don’t know what is happening and are making noise,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested earlier this week and granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties, both to be justified.

His lawyers have secured one surety but have yet to meet the second condition, resulting in his continued custody.

The bail amount has been criticised by various political figures, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who described it as unrealistic.

Dr. Bawumia stated that few individuals in Ghana possess properties worth GH¢50 million to satisfy such bail conditions.

The situation has sparked protests from NPP supporters and members of Parliament. The Minority caucus staged a walkout from Parliament and marched to EOCO’s headquarters, demanding Wontumi’s release.

They argue that the bail conditions are excessive and politically motivated.

Despite the protests, EOCO maintains that the bail conditions are appropriate given the severity of the allegations against Wontumi, which include fraud, money laundering, and involvement in international organized crime.

The agency asserts that any concerns regarding bail conditions should be addressed through the courts, not public demonstrations.

As of now, Chairman Wontumi remains in custody pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions. His legal team has indicated plans to seek a variation of the bail terms through the judicial system.

Fuel prices in Ghana set to drop by up to 9% — ASEC

The drop is driven by the appreciation of the cedi against the dollar The drop is driven by the appreciation of the cedi against the dollar

Ghanaians can expect a 5–9% reduction in fuel prices in the upcoming pricing window, according to the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC).

The anticipated drop is largely driven by the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.

According to a statement released on May 30, 2025, ASEC, in its latest market assessment, revealed that petrol prices are projected to fall to between GH₵12.00 and GH₵12.60 per litre.

“The Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC) has announced a projected 5–9% drop in fuel prices across Ghana in the upcoming pricing window, driven primarily by the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar.

“According to ASEC’s market assessment, petrol is expected to sell between GH₵12.00 and GH₵12.60 per litre, while diesel prices are forecast to range from GH₵12.60 to GH₵13.20 per litre. This represents a reduction of between 5% and 9% compared to the previous pricing window.

ASEC attributed the expected price drop mainly to the stronger cedi, which has reduced the local currency needed to import petroleum products. Though global crude oil prices have also declined from around $85 per barrel in January to $64 currently, the exchange rate impact is seen as more decisive.

Looking ahead, ASEC forecasts continued stability in global oil markets, with prices likely to average between $62 and $65 per barrel for the rest of the year.

“Looking ahead, ASEC anticipates continued stability in global oil markets, with crude prices expected to average between $62 and $65 per barrel for the remainder of the year.

“This outlook is supported by increased production from OPEC+ and reduced global demand, particularly in the US and China, amid ongoing trade tensions,” the statement continued.

However, ASEC warned that while the fuel price cuts benefit consumers, they may also reduce government revenue from crude exports, potentially prompting Ghana to ramp up production to mitigate losses.

I’m grateful; Bryan Acheampong filed documents exceeding GH₵50m bail – Wontumi’s Lawyer

0

The lawyer for embattled Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has revealed that former Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong, played a crucial role in meeting the GH₵50 million bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Speaking in an exclusive interview with JoyNews on Friday, May 30, legal counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that all bail requirements have now been met, with Mr Acheampong stepping in to provide property documentation exceeding the financial value required by EOCO.

“We have been able to provide the sureties, that one, I can assure you, and I’m very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me to file the documents,” Mr Appiah-Kubi said.

“He has brought his documents, which go over and above the value of money that is required. So I thank him very much.”

Chairman Wontumi was arrested and detained over allegations of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. Though he was granted bail with two sureties to be justified, efforts to fully meet those conditions took days.

The breakthrough in securing the final surety came just ahead of the weekend, but Wontumi remains in EOCO custody due to a new legal development.

According to his lawyer, a fresh court application filed by unknown persons has stalled his release, despite all bail conditions being satisfied.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can go forward,” Appiah-Kubi explained.

“Unknown to me, there was an application to frustrate what we are doing… It is an application that was not filed by my good self, but that prohibits us. We’ll deal with it on Monday.”

He also confirmed that Wontumi’s health remains stable, dismissing rumours of a hunger strike, and explained why a planned meeting between the former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Wontumi could not happen.

“We had brought him to meet with the former Vice President, but the situation we saw was difficult to arrange this meeting, to pass through the crowd… So we had to take him back. His condition of health requires attention, so he’s receiving attention and there’s nothing to worry about.”

Wontumi’s arrest has stirred significant political and public attention, prompting visits from top NPP officials including Dr. Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Supporters have also massed at the EOCO and NIB headquarters demanding his release.

Appiah-Kubi stated that unless the pending legal obstruction is withdrawn or resolved, Wontumi will remain in custody until Monday, June 2.

Allow the lawyers to do their work – NPP MP slams executives

According to the MP, some people in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and sections of the general public are being too quick to judge the legal team, forgetting that bail is a legal process and not a political drama.

Africa stands at a crossroads of possibility – Dr Omane Boamah tells LSE Forum

0

Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has described Africa as being at a pivotal moment—not of crisis, but of immense possibility—during his address at the Futures Forum 2025, held at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on Tuesday, 27 May.

Speaking to an audience of academics, policymakers, and innovators, Dr Boamah urged the continent to claim its agency and shape a prosperous future amid global transformations.

“Africa stands at a defining crossroads. Not of crisis, but of possibility,” he declared. “In a world where global security is being reimagined, Africa must not sit on the sidelines—we must shape the future we deserve.”

He emphasised the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), calling it “more than a legal text—it is a blueprint for shared prosperity, for jobs, and for homegrown innovation.”

Dr Boamah also highlighted the strides being made in Ghana under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, particularly through the One Million Coders’ Programme, introduced by LSE alumnus and Minister Sam George.

“This programme seeks to equip the youth with critical skill sets in data protection, cybersecurity, AI engineering, and software engineering in multiple coding languages,” he noted, underscoring its role in preparing young Africans for the digital economy.

Concluding his address, Dr Boamah called for unity, visionary leadership, and a reimagining of international development partnerships.

“Let us rise beyond the divisions—those imposed from within and without. Let peace, vision, and solidarity be the forces that unite us. Africa must unite. Africa will unite. And together, we will build the Africa We Want,” he affirmed, drawing resounding applause from the international audience.

‘Serious’ Mahama should be succeeded by Ibrahim Mahama or Alan Kyerematen – Medikal

Ghanaian rapper Medikal has heaped praises on President John Dramani Mahama, commending his leadership and efforts to revive the country’s economy.

In a post shared on X on May 30, 2025, Medikal expressed admiration for Mahama’s governance, stating that he wish the former president could remain in power for a longer period due to what he described as dedication to “resetting” the economy.

“You people should pray that Mahama doesn’t leave power, ooh. Very serious guy!” the rapper wrote.

Medikal went on to suggest that if President Mahama were to step down, the presidency should be handed over to either his brother cum businessman Ibrahim Mahama or former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, popularly known as “Alan Cash.”

According to the rapper, both individuals possess the vision and ambition necessary to transform Ghana into a great nation.

“Even if he does finish his term, he should pass it over to Ibrahim Mahama, his brother, or Alan Cash. These men have serious ambitions to make Ghana a great nation, trust me,” Medikal added.

Wontumi denied family access, phones confiscated amid EOCO detention

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reportedly been denied access to his family and had his phones confiscated while in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

His counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed these restrictions on JoyNews on May 31, 2025, calling them a “violation” of his client’s rights.

According to Appiah-Kubi, even him, requires an approved application and official escort just to see Wontumi.

While Wontumi’s legal team focuses on securing his release, they plan to seek further redress for the denial of family access at an “appropriate time.”

Currently, Chairman Wontumi is receiving medical attention in EOCO’s custody, with his lawyer confirming he “has been unwell and is still unwell.”

However, Appiah-Kubi denied any knowledge of a hunger strike.

Despite meeting the GH¢50 million bail conditions set by EOCO (requiring two justified sureties), Wontumi’s fate remains uncertain until Monday, as EOCO has filed a new suit.

His legal team has also challenged the original bail conditions, calling them “most difficult and worse and most unfair.”

The lawyer expressed concern over the “mode” of Wontumi’s arrest, stating he was “accosted in the middle of the road” without a prior invitation.

Wontumi was initially invited by the CID for alleged illegal mining, but his current EOCO detention pertains to separate allegations of “causing financial loss to the state,” all of which he denies.

Despite the situation, he is said to be “not too happy” but willing to cooperate with legitimate security agency invitations.

Inflation falling, but risks still loom

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has stated that despite the country’s progress in curbing price pressures, risks still remain.

Speaking at a roundtable session during the 2025 African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Dr Asiama explained that the BoG’s decision to maintain the policy rate at 28% is aimed at consolidating recent gains in disinflation and sustaining investor confidence in Ghana’s macroeconomic environment.

“This decision was grounded in a clear and focused objective: to consolidate the gains in disinflation while maintaining confidence in Ghana’s macroeconomic framework,” he said.

According to the Governor, inflation has steadily declined from 23.8% at the end of 2024 to 21.2% in April 2025, indicating that the country is making progress in curbing price pressures.

However, he cautioned that risks remain, including food supply constraints and global commodity price volatility.

“Our approach is forward-looking but cautious. The current tight monetary stance will be maintained until inflation expectations are fully re-anchored and headline inflation returns sustainably to our medium-term target of eight plus two percent,” Dr Asiama noted.

He also highlighted ongoing reforms to enhance liquidity management, stating that the central bank is shifting away from passive tools like the unremunerated Cash Reserve Ratio toward a more proactive Open Market Operations (OMO) framework.

Cedi Appreciation Based on Strong Fundamentals

Addressing concerns about the recent sharp appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, Dr. Asiama said the currency’s strength is well-founded and reflects underlying economic improvements.

“As of May 20, 2025, the Ghana cedi has appreciated by 21.5% year-to-date, a remarkable turnaround from the 19.2% depreciation recorded in 2024.

“This appreciation is not speculative, not artificial, and not temporary. It is grounded in fundamentals,” he said.

He attributed the cedi’s performance to several key factors including strong foreign exchange inflows from gold exports, the Gold-for-Reserves programme, which has allowed the BoG to build reserves while easing pressure on the FX market and net international reserves, which are now standing at a robust US$10.67 billion.

“Even as we remain vigilant, we believe the cedi is entering a new phase of anchored stability. Global risks like a stronger U.S. dollar or a fall in gold prices could pose challenges, but Ghana’s domestic policy stance is strong enough to absorb those shocks,” Dr. Asiama stated.

What Prof. Jane Did To Chairman Wontumi After Attacking Her On Live Radio

0

While the media has been an expedient medium for politicians to make their messages known to the electorates and the general public, abuse on human rights has been on the rise on this same platform.

Participation and involvement of women in Ghanaian politics has not yielded much attention and recognition perhaps due to stigmatisation or cultural barriers. However, even for those who strive to break the existing and prevailing barriers, they tend to face more challenging problems along the way.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is one of those brave and strong women who are charting a promising future for Ghanaian women in the political space. With her charisma, maturity, and emotional intelligence, she is able to adapt professionally to the masculinity that comes with the current trends in politics.

An instance is when the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, well-known as Chairman Wontumi said on live radio (Wontumi radio) that Prof. Jane is “ugly” and “witch”, prior to the 2020 general elections.

Upon hearing this, Prof. Jane did not retaliate but rather pushed for change against men who abuse women verbally or in general terms all in the name of politics. Wontumi’s act was highly condemned by several women activists, and in indeed, the battle was won in favour of women in the Ghanaian political landscape because some men also stood strongly against such act.

National Democratic Congress’ decision to make Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang a running mate paved way for their major victory in the parliamentary elections in Ghana’s Central Region.

In Parliament this year, the current leader of the majority caucus, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, also attacked the age and the personality of Prof. Jane, raising critical questions about the future of women involvement in Ghanian politics.

He said: “Even if you look at his choice of running mate, he could not get somebody that one could say they are planning for the future. The person is over 70 years; we have no succession plan. From day one, their government will be in crisis. They went to pick the very old woman who could not perform at the Education Ministry.”

Fresh Ways to Wear a Denim Skirt in Summer

0

The denim skirt is a timeless wardrobe staple that effortlessly bridges casual cool and laid-back elegance. While it’s been a summer favorite for decades, there are always fresh ways to style it to keep your look current and inspired. This season, experiment with textures, silhouettes, and accessories to breathe new life into this classic piece.

Give your denim skirt a chic upgrade by pairing it with a statement blouse. Think puff sleeves, eyelet lace, or floral prints. This combo balances the casual vibe of denim with a feminine, romantic touch, making it ideal for brunch dates or garden parties.

Denim-on-denim is making a stylish comeback. Choose a denim top or jacket in a similar wash for a cohesive look, or mix lighter and darker shades for contrast. Keep accessories minimal and sleek to let the double-denim aesthetic shine.

For a sporty, off-duty look, team your denim skirt with a cropped tank and white sneakers. Add a baseball cap and a canvas tote to complete the athleisure-inspired outfit—perfect for running errands or a casual day out.

Elevate your denim skirt by pairing it with strappy heels and a tucked-in satin cami. Add statement earrings and a clutch for a nighttime look that’s equal parts edgy and elegant.

Layering in summer might sound counterintuitive, but a lightweight kimono or sheer duster can add dimension and flair. Opt for one in a bold pattern to contrast with the simplicity of denim.

With these fresh ideas, your denim skirt will go far beyond basic. It’s all about creativity, comfort, and confidence—so mix and match to find the look that fits your summer vibe best.

Wontumi’s lawyers file motion to review his bail conditions

0

Lawyers for embattled Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party(NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has filed a motion at the High Court in Accra seeking a review of the bail conditions imposed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The application filed on Friday, May 30, 2025, is requesting that the court reconsiders the bail terms based on the grounds outlined in the accompanying affidavit.

The court is scheduled to hear the motion on June 3, 2025.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on Tuesday, shortly after leaving the CID headquarters in Accra. His arrest has drawn widespread criticism from within the NPP

He remains in custody after failing to meet his bail conditions of GH₵50 million with two justified sureties on Wednesday, amid reports of ill health.

On Thursday, the Minority in Parliament and some members of the NPP stormed EOCO’s headquarters to protest the bail conditions, describing them as excessive and unreasonable.

Meanwhile, lead counsel and former Asante Akyem North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi has revealed that all the necessary documentation for the two sureties has been completed, with significant support from the former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Abetifi MP, Bryan Acheampong.

I’ll stay out of the politics and theatrics – Wontumi’s lawyer

0

On the second day, party members besieged the head office of EOCO again and were later bussed to the head office of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) after they got a hint that Chairman Wontumi might have been transferred there.

However, Mr Appiah-Kubi, a member of the NPP and immediate past MP for Asante Akim North, prefers a different approach.

“You see, there is a way of doing everything. If you use the way to do it, you will do it as expected. So you don’t start throwing stones when you want to enter the house. What is the time? This is 8:00 pm, but we’ve gotten public officers [of EOCO] to stay here and wait for us [even though they close at 5:00 pm]. It depends on how you conduct the business,” he said in an apparent response to the way the NPP handled that matter.

Earlier in the day, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia expressed deep disappointment over what he said was the inability of the NPP leadership to meet with their detained regional chairman.

Again, Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, alleged that Chairman Wontumi had refused to eat as a form of protest.

Regarding Chairman Wontumi’s whereabouts and health, Mr Appiah-Kubi clarified, “We had brought him to meet with the [former] Vice President but the situation we saw was difficult to arrange this meeting to pass through the crowd to get the [former] Vice President to see him and talk to him so we had to take him back.”

He assured the public about his client’s condition, stating, “his condition of health requires attention, so he’s receiving attention. He is wholly good, he’s wholly healthy, and there’s nothing to worry about in respect of his health.”

The lawyer expressed optimism that with the new legal hurdle addressed, Chairman Wontumi could be free as early as Monday.

On the hunger strike, Mr Appiah-Kubi stated on JoyNews’ The Pulse earlier that he had not received any such information, revealing that he had shared a meal with his client just days ago.

“Two days ago in the evening, I had dinner with him. I’m going to see him now at EOCO. After that, he will respond whether this happened today or yesterday,” the lawyer said.

Wontumi not on hunger strike – Lawyer clarifies

0

The lawyer for Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has dismissed reports that his client is on a hunger strike while in detention.

Speaking to the media, Andy Appiah-Kubi clarified that Wontumi remains in the custody of the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) and is receiving medical attention at a clinic. He acknowledged that Wontumi has experienced health challenges since his detention began, but rejected claims that he is refusing food.

This clarification follows an earlier assertion by Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who alleged that Wontumi was on a hunger strike in protest of his detention conditions. Annoh-Dompreh described the situation as “shocking” and expressed concern over the absence of official updates on Wontumi’s wellbeing.

Appiah-Kubi firmly refuted the claim, revealing that he had recently shared a meal with his client.

“Two days ago in the evening [Wednesday, May 28], I had dinner with him. I’m going to see him now at EOCO. After that, he will respond whether this happened today or yesterday,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation for alleged fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes linked to the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank). Although EOCO has granted him bail set at GH¢50 million with two justified sureties, his legal team has so far secured only one, resulting in his continued detention.
