Kofi Annum Family Reclaims Regimanuel Lands After 33 Years of Non-Payment

0

The Numo Kofi Anum family of Tesa has officially taken possession of a large stretch of land previously held by Regimanuel Grey Limited, following a High Court judgement and formal possession order.

The decision marks the end of a decades-long land dispute, dating back to an agreement over 33 years ago.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Numo Amu Amu Wulemo, a traditional leader and family spokesperson, stated that the land was originally entrusted to Regimanuel Grey Limited by their ancestors in 1991, with the understanding that the company would develop it into a real estate enclave. However, the company allegedly paid only GH₵2,000 for the vast acreage and has since failed to meet the terms of the agreement.

“For 33 years, they have neither developed the land as promised nor paid what is due to the family,” Wulemo revealed. “We’ve been patient, but the agreement was clearly violated, and as law-abiding citizens, we sought justice through the legal process.”

On 24th June 2025, the High Court ruled in favour of the family, instructing Regimanuel Grey Limited to relinquish 123 acres of undeveloped land back to its rightful owners.

According to Wulemo, both parties were served by the court bailiff shortly after the judgment.

Despite the court’s decision, the family claims Regimanuel Grey Limited has since taken unlawful steps to block them from accessing their land.

Wulemo alleged that the company has hired landguards to prevent the family from setting foot on the property located at the Regimanuel Golden Gate and Platinum Gate Estates.

“This is a clear disregard for the authority of the court and a dangerous provocation,” he said. “We have no intention of disrupting any lawful occupants. Our only aim is to take peaceful possession of the 123 acres that the court has rightfully returned to us.”

The family insists that they are not targeting developed parts of the estate or displacing anyone who resides lawfully on the land. However, they remain determined to reclaim the remaining undeveloped land. Wulemo noted that while the company had recently presented a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the family found the terms unacceptable.

“The proposal they gave us was not in good faith. It did not respect the court’s ruling and it did not serve the interest of the family,” he explained. “We rejected the MoU because it sought to impose terms that were simply unreasonable and unbalanced.”

The Numo Kofi Anum family has now turned to the country’s leadership for assistance in ensuring that justice is enforced. They are appealing directly to President John Dramani Mahama and the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tetteh Yohonu, to intervene and help enforce the court’s ruling fairly and peacefully.

“We trust in the judicial system, and we now ask the President and the IGP to help ensure that the judgment is respected and implemented without further intimidation or delay,” Wulemo said.

The family maintains that their fight is not just about reclaiming land, but also about upholding the rule of law and honouring the legacy of their forefathers who originally entrusted the land to the developers in good faith.

US Senator moves with a new strategy against the Muslim Brotherhood

0

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, is introducing a bill to officially declare the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation.

This move is part of a decade-long campaign led by Cruz to designate the group as a terrorist organisation. He believes his move is necessary to impose sanctions on the global Islamist network that spawned Hamas and other groups that threaten American interests.

Cruz stated that Hamas, which the United States already designates as a terrorist organisation, is part of the Muslim Brotherhood, according to its charter.

What’s new in the bill is that it adopts a new “bottom-up” strategy to first identify Muslim Brotherhood branches that explicitly engage in terrorism before designating the entire organisation.

This approach aims to overcome democratic opposition and avoid potential criticism of prosecuting branches of the group that were not directly involved in violence.

Cruz was joined in sponsoring the Senate bill by several Republican senators, including Tom Cotton, John Boozman, Rick Scott, Ashley Moody, and Dave McCormick. Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart and Jared Moskowitz also introduced a companion bill in the House of Representatives, furthering efforts to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation.

Cruz emphasises that the Muslim Brotherhood remains committed to overthrowing and destroying American and other non-Islamic governments and poses a grave threat to US national security interests.

He emphasises the need to blacklist the Muslim Brotherhood to halt its support for terrorist groups.
The bill states that “Hamas is a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, according to its charter, which describes Hamas as one of the wings of the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine.

” The bill also states, “On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists committed the worst single-day massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, which included the murder, kidnapping, or disappearance of at least 53 American citizens.”

It states that “the Muslim Brotherhood operates as a global organization, providing material support to its branches in countries and regions by providing political support, financial resources, training, services, specialized advice, and communications assistance.”

The text of the bill also states that “the Muslim Brotherhood branches have sought to destabilise U.S. allies and partners throughout the Middle East.”

Concurrent with Cruz’s move, Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) introduced a companion bill in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, providing additional momentum to the effort to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation.

The new US move against the Brotherhood comes as part of an ongoing Arab and European pressure campaign to besiege the group, drain its resources, and crack down on its tools. Press reports suggest that the Brotherhood’s file will soon reach the European Parliament, in a swift response to last week’s French move.

After chairing an urgent meeting of the National Security Council on July 7, French President Emmanuel Macron directed his government to take new measures aimed at drying up the Muslim Brotherhood’s funding sources and expanding sanctions against it.

Agbodza, Asenso-Boakye clash in Parliament over ‘Big Push’ roads initiative

0

A heated exchange unfolded in Parliament on Wednesday as Roads and Highways Minister, Kwame Governs Agbodza, clashed with his predecessor, Francis Asenso-Boakye, over the government’s ambitious Big Push road infrastructure programme.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, former Minister Asenso-Boakye criticised the initiative as politically driven rather than economically strategic.

“The greatest of respect, this so much talked about push is neither balanced nor big, nor strategic,” Asenso-Boakye declared.

“I say this because I believe strongly that it’s just a political programme rather than an economically efficient programme. One, Mr Speaker, the list of programmes, of roads is heavily skewed towards certain regions in the country, completely neglecting Greater Accra and the Ashanti Region.”

He elaborated, saying: “For me, that is not fair to the country, that is not strategic because you build roads where there are human beings, a lot of human, densely populated people, communities. You build roads which will connect economic centres that will drive economic development and economic growth. Basic economic theory teaches us that when resources are scarce, when we are in financial constraints, we prioritise, and that’s exactly what I’m saying. If my opponents don’t understand this, I don’t know what else they will understand.”

In response, Minister Agbodza strongly defended the government’s approach, disputing the former Minister’s claims and maintaining that road development under the Big Push is being implemented nationwide.

“You issued a statement saying that we are saying that President Akufo-Addo, well, we are trying to rubbish President Akufo-Addo’s record of 10,800 kilometres. You were not here. He was standing here and said, ‘We have built 10,800 kilometres of new roads’ and he was doing, asked like that,” Agbodza argued.

“I fact-checked him. What the President said here was untrue. He never built 10,800 kilometres of new roads.”

He also questioned Asenso-Boakye’s regional focus. “My brother, you see, you have been a road minister for the Republic of Ghana. Is it just a small advice? The road minister of the Republic of Ghana doesn’t sit well where all your examples appear as if you haven’t been to any other place in the country. It doesn’t look well.”

While acknowledging the high traffic volumes in Accra and Kumasi, Agbodza stressed the importance of inclusive development.

“Yes, I agree, Accra and Kumasi have the biggest volume of traffic in the country. But when you give the impression that just because that is the biggest volume, what about the farmer growing yam in Yendi? Don’t we have to take a road there to convey the yam for us to consume in Accra?”

“So you think that just because there are more people in Accra and Kumasi, we should spend all our money in Accra and Kumasi?”

He added: “I went around the 16 regions. When I got to the Oti Region, there was no active road project going on. Is that fair? Is that fair? Guess what? Reset means that we are taking road infrastructure to every part of the country.”

“And if you don’t like it, you can do whatever you like. When you come back, you can decide not to take road there. We shall take the road there everywhere we like.”

Meanwhile, Parliament has approved a government request to dedicate all oil revenues and mineral royalties to fund the Big Push programme. This follows a report by the joint committees on Budget and Finance on multi-year commitments for selected road projects under the GH¢13.8 billion Big Push Phase One.

The government intends to invest approximately GH¢70 billion in the Big Push by 2028.

Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the government’s commitment but cautioned against exaggeration.

“If somebody says that I am aggregating, putting everything together under my administration, and I’ve done 13,000 kilometres — and as a result of that, even pothole patching has been included — what is wrong with it?”

He also raised concerns about regional equity: “Because you and I know that a lot of our roads are impassable because of their state. So if you fix them and you’re adding that to your achievements, there’s nothing wrong with that — with respect. And you agree with me.”

“The concern of the minority has to do with the uneven distribution of these roads. I have seen the list. Quite a number of them.”

He noted the importance of recognising continuity in governance: “Sometimes, we the politicians, we try to pretend. But the reality is always the reality. Some of these roads were started under Akufo-Addo.”

“They have not been completed. You are continuing. That is governance. And I agree. I will not stand here and critique you for that.”

However, Afenyo-Markin challenged the branding of the programme: “But the impression should not be created as though it is a certain ‘Big Push.’ Big Push? Big Push? What are you pushing?”

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga countered with strong support for the programme: “I believe that this ‘Big Push’ project is not the first time we are doing roads, but it’s an expression of this government’s commitment to make a major dent in the road infrastructure deficit of this country.”

“We plan to do more. He was asking what we are pushing. We’re pushing on all the roads of this country. That’s where we’re going to push.”

Looking ahead, he said: “When we finally finish fixing the financial mess that we have inherited, and we sort out the debt that we have inherited, and we begin to make significant savings, I can assure you that your complaint about discrimination will be addressed.”

WPRD Festival Highlights Leadership –

0

A session during the event

The 2025 edition of the World Public Relations Day (WPRD) Festival concluded on a high note with a transformative fireside chat that brought together seasoned communication professionals and rising talents to explore the critical role of personal branding and leadership in public relations.

Held in Accra on July 18, 2025 the event was the capstone of the week-long festival organized by Global Media Alliance (GMA). This year marked the festival’s fifth anniversary, celebrated under the theme “Dominant Coalition and Personal Branding.”

Themed, “Dominant Coalition and Personal Branding”, the Fireside Chat was a riveting discussion featuring two prominent voices in Ghana’s corporate communication space: Cynthia Lumor, Deputy Managing Director of Tullow Ghana, and Gayheart Mensah, Deputy CEO (Corporate Services) at the Food and Drugs Authority. Moderated by Cynthia Ofori-Dwumfuo, Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Hollard Ghana, the fireside chat was rich with insights, experience, and actionable wisdom.

Climbing Leadership Ladder Through Purpose And Personal Branding

In her opening remarks, Madam Lumor urged PR professionals to embrace uncertainty, take bold steps in their career paths, and never settle into comfort zones that stifle growth. “The fear of the unknown paralyses us. Don’t be afraid to make a move, even if the next step comes with a lower salary,” she advised, highlighting the importance of aligning one’s career with long-term value and vision.

Drawing from her journey, Madam Lumor stressed that leadership readiness goes beyond job titles and is rooted in deep knowledge of one’s industry and role. “Regardless of your position, ask yourself, ‘What value do I bring?’ To answer that, you must understand the industry you’re in holistically,” she said.

She emphasized visibility, preparation, and self-advocacy as essential traits. “Volunteer for projects, prepare thoroughly for meetings, and don’t be afraid to speak up,” she said. “Be visible and dependable. Don’t shy away from difficult conversations, and when corrected, don’t take it negatively.”

Madam Lumor credited her professional rise to an insatiable desire to learn and a commitment to exceeding expectations. “You must have that hunger to learn. Be ready to learn from those who came before you and seize the opportunities that come with it.”

Her framework for leadership in PR rests on four cornerstone values: Empathy, Integrity, Dependability, and Boldness, qualities she believes are fundamental to building credibility and influence in the profession.

Build Your Brand With Values And Discipline

Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Mensah took the audience through his journey from journalism into public relations and how he transformed his career by consciously building his brand.

“Success is grounded in principles and values. Take yourself seriously,” he said. “Ambition is good, but ambition without character will not get you far. This is about personal development and continuous growth, even outside your core career.”

Mr. Mensah emphasized the importance of intentionality in leadership development. He recalled making a deliberate decision to overcome his natural shyness to expand his professional influence. “Your brand already exists. What you’re known for is your brand. The question is: Are you maintaining and growing that brand? That requires discipline and sacrifice.”

To younger professionals in the audience, Mr. Mensah made a call to action: Set meaningful goals. “Make sure you set goals for yourself. It’s very important to have goals that are sustainable, measurable, attainable, and realistic,” he advised.

He also stressed the importance of building professional networks, upholding ethical standards, and not underestimating the power of consistency. “People must be able to count on you. Your reliability becomes your trademark,” he said.

Celebrating Five Years Of Advocacy And Growth Of Public Relations

The Fireside Chat served as the climax of the 2025 World PR Day Festival, which had an array of activities including a MasterLAB on the intersection of PR, AI, and data analysis, and a curated Festival Jamz playlist in partnership with Boomplay and YFM, celebrating the fusion of communication, culture, and creativity.

Emma Wenani, Chief Director at Global Media Alliance, described the fifth edition as both a celebration and a call to action. “This milestone not only marks progress but also embodies the spirit of nurturing ideas and building enduring partnerships to advance the Public Relations profession, both in Ghana and globally.”

She expressed heartfelt appreciation to the GMA team and partner organizations for their dedication and vision. “It’s been five years of growth, impact, and collaboration. The fireside chat was a befitting climax, and we’re already looking ahead to an even bigger celebration next year.”

By anchoring events in conversations about leadership, digital transformation, and value creation, WPRD Festival offers a compelling roadmap for practitioners at all stages of their careers, said Ekow Quandzie, Head of PR at Global Media Alliance

Mentorship is a calling, not for everyone

Tinny is a Ghanaian musician Tinny is a Ghanaian musician

Veteran Ghanaian rapper Nii Addo Quaynor, popularly known as Tinny, has shared his thoughts on the idea of mentorship in the music industry.

According to him, mentorship should not be forced on anyone.

In an interview on 3FM, Tinny said even though mentoring young artistes is a good thing, he believes it is a natural calling and not everyone is cut out for it.

Tinny said, people should not feel pressured to mentor others if it does not come naturally to them.

He warned that forcing such connections could lead to negative outcomes and that mentorship should be based on genuine connection and purpose.

“I believe that thing (mentorship) comes naturally. Don’t force it to happen. If you force it to happen, you’ll end up just like a Catholic priest who commits adultery.

“It is not your calling, it comes natural so don’t force yourself to mentor someone or to give a crown to someone. And it is not everyone who deserves a mentoring crown. Mentoring somebody is on point, it is cool but eno be gidigidi like that,” he said.

After taking a break from the music scene for a while, the rapper disclosed that he is currently back in the studio and preparing to release a new album.

“Conquer dropped recently, Barrier is here, I am working on my album which is about to drop and building up to the album, like four to five tracks will follow before the album comes,” he stated.

Revoking uniBank licence was political witch-hunt to cripple NDC

0

Dr. Kwabena Duffuor was Bank of Ghana Governor under Jerry Rawlings' NDC government Dr. Kwabena Duffuor was Bank of Ghana Governor under Jerry Rawlings’ NDC government

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has alleged that the revocation of uniBank’s licence in 2018 was a calculated political move aimed at financially crippling the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, July 30, Kpebu referenced a letter dated June 5, 2018, signed by Dr Kwabena Duffuor, in which shareholders of uniBank proposed an injection of GH¢2 billion into the bank, GH¢1 billion by mid-July and another GH¢1 billion before the end of September that year.

He noted that the same offer was made as far back as 2018, describing the consistency of the shareholders’ position as “fascinating.”

According to him, a legal opinion issued by then Deputy Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, on January 20, 2018, also questioned the legality of setting up the Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), describing it as potentially criminal and contrary to Ghanaian laws.

“When you put the shareholders’ offer together with Godfred Dame’s legal opinion, the only logical conclusion is that the licence was revoked for political reasons. It was a witch-hunt,” he asserted.

He further alleged that the Akufo-Addo administration, in collaboration with then Minister of Finance Kenneth Ofori-Atta, believed uniBank was financially supporting the NDC, and thus took deliberate steps to revoke its licence in an attempt to cut off that support.

“They were singing from the same hymn sheet,” he said.

“They believed that if you yank the licence from uniBank, you cut off oxygen to the NDC,” he added.

He further argued that uniBank was a key player in Ghana’s economy and should have been considered “too big to fail,” citing how major US banks were supported during the 2008 financial crisis despite their faults.

Martin Kpebu’s remarks come on the back of a recent decision by Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine to discontinue the criminal case against uniBank founder, Dr Kwabena Duffuor.

August 4 not a public holiday — Interior Ministry clarifies

0

The Ministry of the Interior has clarified that Monday, August 4, 2025, will NOT be observed as a public holiday.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 31, 2025, in line with the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Act, 2025, the ministry reminded the public of the official list of statutory holidays for the year, as approved by the President.

The clarification follows questions and public speculation over whether August 4 — previously marked as Founders’ Day — would be observed this year.

According to the Ministry, only holidays listed in the official 2025 calendar are to be observed as public holidays. August 4 does not appear on that list.

The statement urged the general public, businesses, and institutions to take note and continue normal activities on that date.

Bianca calls for calm as Ghana protests spark fears of anti-Nigerian backlash

0

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria’s minister of state for foreign affairs, has called for calm amid growing tensions in Ghana following protests by local traders demanding the deportation of Nigerian nationals.

Speaking at a joint press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, Odumegwu-Ojukwu sought to allay fears sparked by viral videos of anti-Nigerian sentiments that circulated on social media over the weekend.

“Since I arrived, I haven’t seen people burning tyres in the streets or carrying placards everywhere calling for Nigerians to be deported,” she said. “This shows that the Ghanaian government and the president have stepped up to the situation. I would say there’s no cause for alarm — they are handling the situation effectively, and we will continue engaging stakeholders.”

Her visit followed a weekend protest in parts of Accra, where dozens of Ghanaian traders, mostly from the local retail market, accused Nigerian traders of engaging in practices they say contravene Ghanaian values and business laws. Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans calling for the deportation of Nigerians, alleging rising insecurity and unfair competition.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who held meetings with community leaders and some individuals involved in the protests, said her mission was to de-escalate tensions and encourage dialogue. “This is a sensitive issue. We are here to listen and to find peaceful ways forward,” she added.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa,, Ghana’s foreign minister, who stood beside her at the briefing, reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting all residents in Ghana, regardless of nationality.

“The Ghanaian government will ensure that everyone in the country — citizens and non-citizens — is protected,” ablakwa said. However, he added that all residents, including foreign nationals, must respect Ghana’s laws. “People need to be law-abiding and avoid criminal activities and actions that could divide us,” he stressed.

Relations between Ghana and Nigeria — two of West Africa’s largest economies — have faced occasional strain in recent years, particularly around trade and immigration issues. The latest protest appears to have been driven by frustrations over perceived violations of local retail trade regulations and concerns about crime.

Analysts say such flare-ups risk undermining broader regional integration efforts, especially as both countries are members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which promotes free movement and trade.

Both ministers agreed to continue consultations and engage with relevant stakeholders to ease tensions and promote peaceful coexistence.

For now, while the streets of Accra remain calm, the situation underscores the fragility of diplomatic and people-to-people relations in times of economic stress and social tension — and the need for strong, sustained dialogue.

Opposition MP Accuses Ruling Party of Deception in Campaign Speech

Abena Osei Asare
Abena Osei Asare

Abena Osei Asare, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, has claimed Ghanaians feel “deceived” by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

Speaking at an NPP campaign launch in Akwatia on July 30, the former deputy minister asserted that President John Mahama’s administration secured power through false promises.

According to public records, Osei Asare stated: “Within six months, Ghanaians have realized the NDC deceived them. They govern with deception.” She urged voters to support the NPP’s Akwatia by-election candidate to strengthen the party’s 88 parliamentary seats and “expose NDC lies.”

The MP appealed to disengaged voters, saying: “Some didn’t vote in 2024 due to anger or personal disputes. I plead: vote now. Ghanaians hope we can better their lot.” She framed the campaign as a tribute to late NPP MP Ernest Kumi, who previously held the Akwatia seat: “Honor Kumi’s sacrifice with your votes.”

The remarks highlight escalating political tensions as Ghana approaches the 2028 election cycle.

Three aspirants cleared to contest NDC Akwatia primaries

0

All three aspirants who picked nomination forms to contest the upcoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia Constituency have successfully completed the vetting process.

The contenders include former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Henry Boakye (popularly known as Okoyo); Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq., who also serves as the Akwatia Constituency Secretary; and Erasmus Koney Ali, widely known in Akwatia as Asanka Poyooyo.

The aspirants appeared before the vetting committee on Thursday, July 31. The committee was chaired by the Deputy National Organiser of the party, Kobby Balon, and supported by the Director of Logistics and Protocol, Ludwig Hlodze.

Following the vetting, balloting was conducted to determine the order on the ballot paper. Bernard Bediako Baidoo picked the first position, Erasmus Koney Ali the second, and former MP Henry Boakye picked the third.

Speaking to Journalists at the residency where the vetting was held in Koforidua, Bernard Bediako Baidoo and Erasmus Koney Ali both expressed their readiness to lead the party in a peaceful process to victory.

“We know that by Monday late afternoon, one of us will emerge winner, and then we will all rally behind that person. To make the party proud on September 2,” Bernard Bediako Baidoo said.

“With hard work, I can assure you I am winning,” Erasmus Koney Ali stated.

The Director for Logistics and Protocol of the NDC, Ludwig Hlodze, described the process as a smooth one. He is calling on supporters of all the aspirants to rally behind the ultimate winner on Monday, while stressing that the NDC is approaching the by-election with a reset agenda.

“We spoke to them to go there united. Only one person will win the primaries. We will all support that person to make sure we win the seat,” he stated.

‘To Kill a Monkey’ leaves MzGee in deep reflection

0

Ghanaian media personality MzGee Ghanaian media personality MzGee

Ghanaian media personality MzGee has shared an emotional and thought-provoking reflection on the Nigerian series “To Kill A Monkey”, calling it one of the most eye-opening and heart-wrenching pieces of storytelling she has encountered in recent times.

The series, which explores themes of betrayal, trauma, loyalty, parental expectations, and gender-based harassment, left MzGee deeply moved and full of lessons she believes resonate far beyond the screen.

In a lengthy and impassioned monologue on Gee O’clock, MzGee praised the 2025 Nigerian crime thriller television series created and directed by Kemi Adetiba for its realism and emotional depth, saying it challenged her to think critically about relationships, morality, and the unspoken struggles people endure.

One of the standout lessons for MzGee came from the character of a son who grew up resenting his father for not doing “enough”only to become the very kind of father he once condemned.

“Sometimes, when you don’t forgive or understand, you become what you hate,” she noted.

For MzGee, this was a clear reminder to show compassion to struggling parents, especially those who genuinely did their best under tough circumstances.

Another profound takeaway for the broadcaster was the series’ bold portrayal of sexual harassment against men—something rarely depicted in African storytelling.

“We often assume that harassment is a woman’s problem,” she said, “but To Kill A Monkey showed how men too can be victims, and worse, suffer in silence.”

MzGee called for greater sensitivity and support for male victims of abuse, particularly in industries like media and entertainment where such experiences are often buried under shame.

The series, premiered on Netflix on July 18, 2025, also explores the consequences of blind loyalty, particularly through the character of a man who stands by a friend and mentor—only to be betrayed and discarded when he was no longer useful.

“Don’t let your loyalty become your weakness,” MzGee cautioned, admitting that this storyline made her question how often people are used under the guise of brotherhood or loyalty.

From a wife torn between supporting her husband and resenting the dangers of his choices, to children entangled in the consequences of their parents’ actions, the show challenges viewers to reflect on the complexities of family life.

MzGee revealed how she found herself asking deeply personal questions like, “Would I have done the same if I were her?” or “Would I sacrifice one love to protect another?”

Describing the viewing experience, MzGee said, “It’s not just entertainment. This series is a mirror. You’ll see yourself in at least one of the characters.” She urged audiences not to watch the series which stars William Benson, Bucci Franklin, and Stella Damasus passively but to treat it as a teaching tool about life, relationships, and the choices people make under pressure.

MzGee concluded by applauding the writers, actors, and directors of To Kill A Monkey for daring to tell such layered and uncomfortable truths. “There are so many lessons packed into every scene,” she said. “This is not just a movie. It’s a masterclass in human nature.”

Her review, raw and deeply introspective, has sparked conversations online, with many agreeing that African film and television are evolving to tackle more complex, nuanced narratives.

“Don’t just watch To Kill A Monkey to fall asleep. Watch it to wake up,” she said.

High Court dismisses Torkornoo’s judicial review application

Gertrude Torkornoo has been suspended as the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has been suspended as the Chief Justice

An application filed by the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo, seeking to quash proceedings initiated against her by the Justice Pwamang Committee, tasked with probing petitions for her removal, has been dismissed by the Accra High Court.

According to a report by legal news portal The Law Platform, the court, in dismissing the application, held that Torkornoo’s filing was an abuse of the court process and that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.

In Torkorno’s judicial review application, she listed the following grounds;

• That the Respondents are not properly and legally constituted under Article 156 to conduct the quasi-judicial proceedings required of an Article 146 Committee.

• That the Respondents violated the audi alteram partem rule of natural justice and Article 282 of the 1992 Constitution on 15th May 2025, and further acted arbitrarily, unreasonably and capriciously in violation of Article 23 and Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution, leading to the conduct of void proceedings on that date.

• That the Respondents have, by failing to provide to the parties the Petition, Answer, and Prima Facie determination that are to form the basis for the enquiry, violated all constitutional requirements for the conduct of a full, impartial enquiry into their alleged terms of reference, thereby rendering the proceedings they are conducting null and void.

• That the Respondents have, by choosing to regulate the proceedings affecting the Applicant as adversarial litigation between the parties and subject to the High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2004, CI 47, without first serving on the parties authenticated pleadings that are to form the basis for the adversarial litigation, violated all requirements for the conduct of adversarial litigation, thereby rendering the proceedings they are conducting null and void.

During proceedings on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the Human Rights Division 1 courtroom, presided over by Justice Kwame Amoako, the court argued that it did not have jurisdiction to inquire into the in camera proceedings.

The heartbreaking career of Clifford Aboagye

0

Clifford Aboagye with his bronze ball Clifford Aboagye with his bronze ball

Clifford Aboagye was once Ghana’s golden boy. A name that rolled effortlessly off the tongues of local fans and foreign scouts alike.

A silky playmaker who, with every deft touch and eye-of-the-needle pass, looked destined for greatness.

Today, he prepares for a new footballing chapter in Cyprus, not as a marquee signing, but as a forgotten gem hoping to shine again.

It all started brightly.

At the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, he was a revelation. Amidst a galaxy of future stars, Paul Pogba, Gerard Deulofeu, Angel Correa, and Saúl Ñíguez, he stood out.

Wearing the colours of Ghana’s Black Satellites, he orchestrated attacks, scored crucial goals, and danced past defenders with ease.

Ghana finished third, and he took home the Bronze Ball, awarded to the tournament’s third-best player, behind only France’s Pogba and Uruguay’s Nicolás López.

Two years later, in 2015, he returned to the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, this time as captain.

A rare feat. He led by example, scoring again and creating chances as he became the first Ghanaian player to feature in two editions of the global tournament since the country’s historic 2009 triumph.

By then, fans saw a future Black Stars midfield built around him.

But that future never arrived.

Despite dazzling on the youth stage and commanding transfer fees as high as €2.5 million during his time in Mexico, he never earned a senior cap for Ghana. Not one.

Many hoped his move to Italian side Udinese in 2013 would be the gateway to top-tier European football.

But instead, he was quietly shipped off to Granada B in Spain, a club affiliated with Udinese, where his first-team dreams stalled.

A year later, he crossed the Atlantic to Mexico, where his career became a carousel of clubs: Atlas, Querétaro, Club Tijuana, Puebla.

At his peak, he fetched significant fees and wore the No. 10 shirt with pride. But consistency eluded him.

By 2022, the decline was visible. He became a free agent, not once, but twice. His market value plummeted from €3 million in 2020 to just €300,000 by 2024. A brief spell in Libya with Al-Murooj barely registered on the radar. For someone whose youth career lit up global stages, the fall was steep and silent.

Now, at 30, he has signed with Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus, not as the superstar he once promised to be, but as a man in search of redemption.

For Ghana, his absence from the senior team remains a “what if.” For him, the dream is still alive, even if the path has changed.

As the 2025/26 season approaches, perhaps Cyprus will finally offer the stage for this once-boy wonder to rewrite his story, even if just a little.

New toll rates submitted to Parliament for approval — Minister

0

Road tolls with an electronic payment system designed to improve efficiency and boost revenue generation for road maintenance across major highways in the country are to be introduced by the government.

In line with that, proposed new toll rates have been submitted to Parliament for approval in accordance with the law.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra yesterday, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, said the system would replace cash transactions at tollbooths with digital payment options, including mobile money and electronic card transactions.

“The electronic toll collection system represents a major leap forward in our efforts to modernise the country’s road infrastructure financing,” Mr Agbodza added.

‘Big Push’

The minister also announced a series of nationwide inspections, stakeholder consultations, and a major infrastructure drive dubbed the “Big Push” initiative to fast-track critical road projects across the country.

The initiative targets the rapid completion of 29 high-priority road projects.

Among them are the construction of a new bridge over the Oti River at Dambai; the upgrading of the Tumu-Hamile Road, the dualisation of the Cape Coast-Takoradi and Winneba Mankessim highways, and the Atimpoku-Asikuma road.

He said earlier this year, the ministry embarked on an extensive nationwide tour to assess road conditions in all 16 regions, which revealed significant disparities between urban and rural road networks.

They also identified numerous abandoned projects that required urgent attention.

Mr Agbodza said the findings of the assessment were now being used to shape the ministry’s policy direction and budgetary allocations to ensure more balanced infrastructure development.

He said with outstanding contractual commitments exceeding GH¢123 billion, the ministry had undertaken a comprehensive review to streamline its project portfolio.

Findings

Mr Agbodza said the findings of the assessment were now being used to shape the ministry’s policy direction and budgetary allocations to ensure more balanced infrastructure development.

He mentioned the alignment of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, the development of the Accra and Kumasi outer ring roads, and the construction of the Adawso-Ekye Amanfrom bridge, which is expected to open up the Afram Plains for agricultural expansion.

Mr Agbodza, however, acknowledged some of the challenges in his ministry, including delayed payments to contractors, stalled projects, inefficiencies in procurement processes, and inadequate technical supervision.

He said they were instituting sector-wide reforms, including performance-based contracts, enhanced quality assurance mechanisms, and value-for-money audits to improve transparency and efficiency in the sector.

Maintenance

To secure long-term maintenance financing, Parliament has passed legislation to establish a Road Maintenance Trust Fund.

The fund, which would be resourced through fuel levies, was expected to address the persistent backlog in road maintenance and introduce greater accountability in revenue management.

Efforts were also underway to strengthen axle load control measures to prevent premature road damage caused by overloaded trucks.

The minister said that a technical committee had been formed to review and modernise enforcement mechanisms in line with ECOWAS standards.

He further said that the Koforidua Training Centre was set to roll out an extensive capacity-building programme for engineers, contractors, and the ministry staff to enhance skills in project management and quality assurance.

He said road conditions from 2014 to 2025 showed that 44 per cent of the country’s 94,203 km road network was rated as being in good condition in 2024.

Some of the residents being taken through the screening

Dr. Antoinette Ata Hasford, a Senior Medical Officer at Euracare Hospital in the Western Region, has stressed the need for Ghanaians to know their hepatitis status.

Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver, which can be caused by various factors, including viral infections.

She said knowing one’s status will allow for early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of further transmission.

She gave the advice during a community medical outreach programme organised by Gold Fields Ghana Foundation under its Gold Fields Group Legacy Programme (GLP).

The third quarter outreach programme was organised for residents of Koduakrom, a community in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region.

The medical outreach provided a comprehensive suite of medical services, including blood sugar and blood pressure checks, eye examinations, body mass index (BMI) assessment and breast cancer screening.

There were also dental care, ear, nose, and throat (ENT) assessments and malaria screening, among others.

The programme was in partnership with Unilever Ghana, and a total of 732 individuals were screened. All the attendees received free toothpastes.

An education session focused on hepatitis B awareness to mark this year’s world hepatitis day.

The Senior Medical Officer said, “People must take charge of their health and go to the nearest hospital to test for hepatitis such that if you are negative, you take the vaccine to protect yourself against Hepatitis ‘B’, most especially.”

She urged pregnant women to attend antenatal care since hepatitis ‘B’ screening is part of the care to help protect their unborn children against the disease.

Project Coordinator – Health, Environment and Conservation of Gold Fields, Ayishetu Mohammed, revealed that to date, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation had invested over US$4.9 million in health and wellness initiatives.

“This reaffirms the company’s long-term commitment to enhancing the quality of life in its host communities,” she added.

She said the Foundation also partnered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to register and renew 708 community members’ insurance cards, to ensure participants access long-term healthcare benefits.

She explained that in Ghana, Gold Fields’ GLP prioritised expanded access to quality healthcare in its host communities.

“The Foundation continues to improve access to quality health services and promote health awareness across its host communities,” she pointed out.

‘Duty Fulfilled’ – Diaz Leaves Liverpool For Bayern

0

Luiz Diaz

LUIS DIAZ says he “fulfilled his duty” at Liverpool after completing a £65.5m move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The Colombia international has signed a four-year deal with the German club to bring his three-and-a-half-year stay at Anfield to an end.

The 28-year-old was left out of Liverpool’s pre-season match against AC Milan on Saturday because of speculation over his future.

Having rejected Bayern’s opening offer of £58.6m earlier this month, Liverpool accepted a follow-up bid of £65.5m over the weekend and gave Diaz permission to have a medical with the club.

The winger leaves the Reds as a Premier League champion, having won four pieces of major silverware during his time at the club, and says his exit would have been the “perfect goodbye” if not for the death of team-mate Diogo Jota earlier this month.

“I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together,” Diaz wrote on Instagram.

“I have met incredible people, fabulous colleagues, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans. Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart.

“It’s good to be leaving with the feeling of a duty fulfilled, and, most of all, to be leaving a champion. It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of ours in such a tragic way.

“I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything.”

Diaz joined Liverpool from Porto for an initial £37m in January 2022, scoring 41 goals in 148 appearances during his time at Anfield.

He won the FA Cup and EFL Cup during his opening season with the Reds, and was part of the side that lost to Real Madrid in the 2022 Champions League final.

Diaz enjoyed the most prolific season of his career last term, scoring 17 goals in all competitions as Liverpool won the Premier League.

The winger’s exit means Liverpool have made around £115m in player sales so far this summer.

That has helped to offset spending of around £270m on Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.

Teach our culture in schools before we lose our identity

Okyeame Kwame is a popular Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame is a popular Ghanaian musician

Ghanaian musician, Okyeame Kwame, has raised concerns over what he describes as the ongoing misconceptions about some traditional practices and how they are described.

In an interview on Hitz FM on July 31, 2025, Okyeame Kwame shared a story involving his son’s interaction with an art teacher, who, when discussing body painting, referred to traditional priests as “fetish” practitioners.

The exchange, according to him, prompted his son to challenge such mislabelling, emphasising that traditional priests are important to societal well-being.

“I think they were discussing body painting and what it was used for. And the art teacher said that when a priest paints himself, he is invoking evil spirits. And then my son thought back and said, No, no, no, it is not fetish. It is a traditional priest. Once you call it fetish, you have marginalised it.

“And how is it that the priest, the person telling people to clean their cities, advising the chief, who knows herbs, and understands the culture, and is a custodian of traditional artifacts and wisdom? How is he using bad spirits to do good things in the community? So this is what I was talking about,” he said.

Okyeame Kwame seized the moment to advocate for integrating cultural nuances into school curricula.

“I think that it is very, very important that we get to understand our tradition well. And cultural relevance and its nuances must be taught in schools so that we know who we are. Because without that, our identity is lost in this whole cosmopolitan matrix,” he warned.

In an earlier interview with Graphic Showbiz, He called for deliberate efforts across creative industries, music, film, fashion, and digital content, to weave in traditional symbols, practices, and stories.

According to him, chieftaincy and local culture should become central, everyday elements in modern identity, not relics reserved for national holidays.

“Bringing chieftaincy into pop culture is crucial. If our music, visuals and storytelling can project our traditions in relatable and modern ways, we will help the next generation understand who they are.

“If we continue to allow our institutions and our media to dilute or shame our cultural symbols, we risk losing our soul as a people. It’s not enough to celebrate culture on Independence Day alone. It must be an everyday reality.

“Our culture is not outdated. It is rich, it is meaningful and it can be ‘cool’ if presented creatively. Let’s make chieftaincy ‘cool’ again,” he said.

You’re not happy for your constituents

Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah

The Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has accused the Minority Caucus of neglecting their constituents’ interests by criticizing the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s economic management during a parliamentary debate on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus staged a walkout during the budget presentation on July 24, 2025, protesting alleged electoral violence in the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, which they claimed involved voter intimidation and misuse of state security.

During a debate on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Ibrahimah argued that the Minority’s walkout and subsequent criticism of the economy was a disregard for their constituents, who are “very happy with the work of Ato Forson managing the economy” since the NDC assumed office on January 7, 2025.

“You are engaging in propaganda again, and I’m wondering how this beautiful document, which they ran away from, represents propaganda, Speaker,” she said.

“You walk out of a budget presentation and come back to debate it? Speaker, I’m not a lawyer, but I know that when you evade service, judgment is made against you,” she added.

According to the Salaga South MP, the Minority’s decision to walk out during the minister’s presentation caused them to fail to appreciate the true state of the economy, leading to their misguided criticism.

“This morning on Atinka Radio, a gentleman called in. He said, ‘Minority, 600 cedis, and now eight bottles—tomatoes, ginger, more.’ He makes eight bottles of shito with 600 cedis now. So he’s making more shito with 600 cedis now,” she said, highlighting the public’s satisfaction with the NDC-led government’s management of the economy.

“If you sit in this chamber, elected to protect your constituents’ interests, and say this news isn’t good news, you’ll face them out there. I challenge my brothers and sisters on this side to go to their constituencies and call town hall meetings and listen to what their constituents will tell them,” she added.

She praised policies outlined by the John Dramani Mahama government, including road infrastructure under the Big Push initiative, noting that the policies will bring relief to citizens.

“The Finance Minister announced the construction of a bridge across the Volta Lake at Dambai. The people of the Eastern Corridor, including my beloved Salaga South, are overwhelmed. Once that bridge is constructed, I travel seven hours from Accra to Salaga. I don’t have to go and wait at Dambai for the ferry and be told that the ferry is broken down. This crossing takes 25 minutes, but people who travel on commercial vehicles from Accra to my constituency leave Accra at 4 p.m. and only arrive in Salaga between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. the following day,” she said.

The Bank of Ghana's gold coin The Bank of Ghana’s gold coin

The investment price of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continues to decline, a development attributed to the Ghana cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar.

The Central Bank introduced these gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars and absorb excess liquidity in the market, ultimately aiming to strengthen the cedi against major foreign currencies.

As of Thursday, July 31, 2025, the BoG reported the following updated prices for its gold coins:

• The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9600.79, down from GH¢9,681.82 on July 28, 2025.

• The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢18,481.39, down from GH¢18,644.31.

• The 1.00 oz coin is selling for GH¢36,285.54, down from GH¢36,612.13.

The Ghana gold coin is available in three denominations: one-ounce, half-ounce, and quarter-ounce, and can be purchased through commercial banks.

Dahlmeier was an Olympics champion Dahlmeier was an Olympics champion

Double Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier has passed on after a mountaineering accident in Pakistan.

The 31-year-old German was caught in a rockfall during an expedition in the Karakoram mountains on July 28, 2025.

She was the first woman to win the sprint and pursuit events at the same Games.

She has won 15 medals, including seven gold, across five World Championships before retiring from competition in May 2019.

Dahlmeier, an experienced mountaineer, represented Germany at two Winter Olympics, winning two gold and one bronze medal in PyeongChang in 2018.

Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, called emergency services after the accident, which occurred at about 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) altitude.

Rescue teams, containing expert climbers from Germany and the United States, immediately began a rescue mission but their search was hindered by adverse weather conditions.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation said Dahlmeier was “more than an Olympic champion – she was someone with a heart, attitude and vision”.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Dahlmeier was an “ambassador for our country around the world and a role model for peaceful, joyful and fair coexistence across borders”.

Barcelona agree shirt sponsorship deal with DR Congo

0

Despite criticism, the Congolese government says the deal with raise the profile of the country Despite criticism, the Congolese government says the deal with raise the profile of the country

Barcelona players will have “DR Congo – Heart of Africa” emblazoned on the back of their training shirts from the start of next season, after the top Spanish football team agreed on a four-year deal with the central African country.

The partnership will reportedly cost the Democratic Republic of Congo 44m euros ($50m; £38m), although the club has not disclosed the amount it will receive.

The arrangement has faced criticism from some Congolese who have questioned their government’s priorities, especially as its domestic football league has been plagued by chronic underfunding for years.

But the authorities have defended the agreement, saying that it will help raise the profile of the country.

As part of the deal, Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium will host what the club called an “immersive exhibition… to showcase the cultural diversity and sporting tradition” of DR Congo.

The country’s Sports Minister Didier Budimbu told BBC Focus on Africa that the agreement includes a training camp for 50 young Congolese players and 10 coaches.

Barcelona says it will also run camps for children across a range of sports, including basketball, handball and roller hockey.

DR Congo has signed similar deals with Italian side AC Milan and French team AS Monaco. Last month, Budimbu described them as part of a strategy to “reposition” DR Congo as a leader in tourism and investment opportunities.

Since 2018, DR Congo’s regional rival Rwanda has had a sponsorship deal with English side Arsenal promoting tourism in the country with the slogan “Visit Rwanda” on the sleeves of the players’ shirts. French team Paris St-Germain and German side Bayern Munich have similar deals.

These have also come under fire, especially recently as Rwanda has been accused of backing rebels in DR Congo in a devastating conflict in the east, which it denies.

In February, DR Congo Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner wrote to the clubs questioning the “morality” of the arrangement.

The Rwandan government dismissed the accusations of sports-washing as a “distraction”.

In June Rwanda and the DR Congo signed a peace deal aimed at ending decades of the devastating conflict.

In 2023, a deal that South Africa’s tourism board pursued with Tottenham Hotspur did not come to fruition after complaints from the public.

Despite similar noises from some quarters in DR Congo, this arrangement has gone ahead.

Since the onset of Covid-19, the country’s national football league has struggled, mostly for lack of funding for travel across the vast country.

Some critics have expressed concern that the European deals could overshadow the conflict in the east and the government’s troubling human rights record.

Tourism Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Youth Empowerment Through Arts and Culture

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie has reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to creating more platforms that empower young Ghanaians to contribute to national development through arts and culture.

Speaking at the National Heritage Photo Competition Awards held at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the Minister emphasized government’s dedication to advancing the creative sector under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.

“The NDC government under His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is committed to creating more platforms that empower young Ghanaians to contribute to national development through arts and culture,” she says.

Ghana School of Law not opposed to AG’s proposal on legal education

0

The Director of the Ghana School of Law, His Lordship Barima Nana Yaw Oppong, has clarified that the School is not opposed to the Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine’s proposal to decentralise professional legal education in Ghana.

According to him, the Ghana School of Law is confident that it will remain competitive and continue to excel, even if other institutions are allowed to offer professional legal training.

This comes after the Attorney General announced plans to present a bill to Parliament aimed at ending the School’s long-standing monopoly over professional legal education. The proposed legislation would allow universities currently offering LLB programmes to also run the professional law course.

Speaking at a meeting with members of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee on Thursday, July 31, the Director emphasised that the School has the capacity and expertise to thrive in a more competitive legal education landscape.

He also appealed to the Committee to assist the Ghana School of Law in obtaining its own establishing statute, noting that the institution currently operates without a formal legal foundation.

“First of all, competition is good. Those universities I will call them yet to be established factories. But we have had this factory for more than 60 years, tried and tested. We have the best lecturers here, the best staff to ensure that the place is clean, and the place is well managed. People will be more interested in where they can get the best professional legal education.

“We’re urgently requesting that we have our own statue to train our students. Get us the law, and let’s compete with all the universities that the law will permit them to train professional law students.

“Then we will have a league table and we will see which university students will be the best students, and I can tell you, I’m prophesying that no other school will beat us,” he said.

Former Finance minister’s application seeking to quash arrest warrant dismissed

0

The Criminal Division of the High Court has dismissed an application filed by former Minister of Finance, Kenneth Ofori-Atta.

The application sought to strike out a warrant issued for his arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, citing a violation of his human rights.

Ofori-Atta also questioned the legality of the OSP’s acquisition of the warrant, thereby requesting the court to set aside the proceedings and the Interpol Red Notice.

However, in an update shared by the OSP on Thursday, July 31, 2025, it was stated that the court, in its verdict, found Ofori-Atta’s application had no merit, leading to the dismissal of the entire suit.

“The High Court (Criminal Division) has dismissed an application by former Finance Minister Kenneth Ofori-Atta seeking to strike out a warrant issued for his arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

“Mr Ofori-Atta had argued that the OSP unlawfully obtained the warrant and asked the court to set aside all related proceedings, including an Interpol Red Notice alert. However, the court this morning ruled that the application lacked merit and dismissed it in its entirety,” the OSP’s update read.

Background

At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng stated that all indications suggested Ofori-Atta had absconded from Ghana to evade investigations into alleged corruption.

He subsequently declared Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive, wanted for corruption and related offences.

However, six days later, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) removed the former finance minister from its list of wanted persons following communication from his legal team confirming his voluntary return to Ghana.

On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyers informed the OSP of a definite date for his return to the country.

In response, the OSP deemed the stated return date reasonable and rescheduled his attendance accordingly.

As a result, Ken Ofori-Atta was removed from the OSP’s wanted list and is no longer considered a fugitive, pending his return on the agreed date.

The former finance minister is under investigation regarding contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for revenue assurance in the petroleum and minerals sectors.

Another investigation concerns the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Technology Limited for distribution loss reduction and network improvement.

Additionally, he is being investigated over procurement, payments, and activities related to the controversial National Cathedral project.

Furthermore, he has been linked to contracts awarded by the Ministry of Health, initially through the Ministry for Special Development Initiatives, to Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the purchase and maintenance of 307 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 305 CDI ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.

The OSP is also examining payments made from and the utilisation of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s tax refund account.

Ghana and Nigeria reaffirm ties, unity after viral video

0

In a demonstration of Pan-African unity, Ghana and Nigeria have reaffirmed their long-standing diplomatic and cultural ties following a wave of social media-fueled tension that briefly threatened to strain relations between the two West African countries.

At the heart of the controversy was a viral video that triggered outrage among Ghanaians and prompted concern within Nigerian leadership about the safety of its nationals residing in Ghana. But in a remarkable turn of diplomacy, both countries have not only moved to defuse tensions but are using the moment to strengthen their bond.

Speaking in Accra, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), described the video as “deeply offensive and regrettable,” but praised Nigeria’s swift and responsible diplomatic response.

“The individual involved has been reprimanded, and he has issued a public apology to President John Dramani Mahama, the people of Ghana, and the government,” Ablakwa disclosed. “In our meeting, he was contrite and genuinely remorseful. This is the kind of maturity and accountability that supports lasting peace,” he added.

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister of State, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, led a high-level delegation to Ghana on behalf of President Tinubu on a fact-finding mission. She is in Ghana to assess the situation on the ground, reassure Nigerian nationals, and prevent diplomatic fallout.

“We arrived with heavy concern—our government, our National Assembly, our traditional leaders, and ordinary Nigerians were deeply worried by calls circulating online urging Nigerians to leave Ghana,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu said. She added that “But when we touched down in Accra, we found calm, not chaos. The tension we feared had not materialized on the ground.”

She extended Nigeria’s profound appreciation to President Mahama and Ghana’s traditional institutions for what she described as a “visionary, peaceful, and Pan-African response” to the incident.

Both ministers underscored that the relationship between Ghana and Nigeria goes far beyond politics. It is one anchored in a shared history, mutual struggles, and intertwined destinies. From ethnic bonds such as those between the Ewe, Ga, and Yoruba people to collaborative leadership within ECOWAS, the two nations are more than neighbours—they are brothers.

According to Ghana’s foreign affairs minister, “our ancestors migrated along the same paths, that we have overcome colonialism, and that we now share a collective responsibility to lead Africa forward. These artificial borders cannot divide us.”

Odumegwu-Ojukwu echoed the sentiment. “The reckless actions of a few must never be allowed to undermine what has taken decades to build,” she said. “Nigerians and Ghanaians live side by side, work side by side, and dream together. That must not change.”

Referencing difficult moments in both countries’ shared history, such as the 1969 Aliens Compliance Order in Ghana and Nigeria’s 1983 “Ghana Must Go” deportation, both diplomats emphasized that the scars of the past serve as warnings, not blueprints.

They called for intensified community-to-community engagement and urged the media to avoid sensationalism that could stoke flames of division.

“We’ve seen the consequences of xenophobia in other African countries,” Ablakwa warned. Words can quickly become weapons. We must be careful not to allow that among us,” Ablakwa added.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu praised Ghana’s reassurances that Nigerian nationals are safe and encouraged continued cooperation through established mechanisms such as the revitalization of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation. She also highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), headquartered in Accra.

“Together, Ghana and Nigeria remain the engines of regional integration,” she said. “We must continue to lead with unity and vision.”

The two countries pledged to work even more closely across areas of trade, security, education, and culture, affirming that peace, not provocation, will shape the future of West Africa.

“Di tori wey don go viral na interview from 2013 wit one network, wia we don abandon dat idea to buy di land since, so we neva get any plan to build kingdom,” im tell local TV network TV3.

Im also confam say di videos wey don dey on top social media wia dem carry im photo put on top one demonstration video say Ghanaians bin dey attack Igbos, “na fake news.”

TMA collects 36 per cent of 2025 estimated IGF in first half

0

By Laduia Sawer

Tema, July 31, GNA – As of June 2025, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has collected only 36 per cent of its estimated internally generated fund (IGF) of GHS 37.6 million for 2025.

Ms Ebi Bright, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, revealed this in her first sessional address during a general assembly meeting.

Ms Bright disclosed that by March this year, the assembly had collected only GHS 5 million, representing a mere 13.6 per cent, adding, however, that by June, through focused effort, they had reached GHS 13.5 million, which is still 36 per cent of the annual target.

According to her, this improvement shows what is possible when they commit to change, acknowledging the exceptional work of the Metropolitan Finance Officer, Madam Akua Bonsu-Owu, for making significant contributions to improving the assembly’s revenue collection.

She also commended other departments for working hard to overcome TMA’s revenue generation and collection challenges.

She further noted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has demonstrated its commitment to decentralisation through unprecedented action, disclosing that the previous District Assemblies Common Fund allocation that the assembly could directly control was a mere GHS 2,875,000 and has now increased to GHS 28.6 million—a tenfold increase.

“As promised by His Excellency the President to release 80% of the DACF to MMDAs, this means real money in our hands to drive development. To date, GHS 3 million for the first quarter has hit our accounts, with the second quarter releases transferred pending submission of our Work and Disbursement Plan. This has not happened during the last eight years, and with this commitment, more projects will be executed as planned,” she said.

The MCE stated that only 20.4 per cent of the assembly’s 2025 budget goes to capital investment, which is still below the 30 per cent target she envisioned.

She noted that the TMA faces a landscape littered with uncompleted projects, a testament to the challenges of multi-year implementation without adequate funding continuity.

She added that basic infrastructure, including roads, drains, sewage systems, and streetlights, was deteriorating daily, adding that Tema’s sewage infrastructure, built decades ago, could not cope with its current population.

“We will increase our internally generated funds by 10 times within my tenure. This is not fantasy—it is mathematics backed by strategy. Every payment point will be digitised, eliminating cash leakages. For instance, the TMA is currently able to collect only 10-30% of sewer fees due. We have dedicated staff suffocated by poor systems. Our revenue collectors have targets set far below our potential.”

Ms Bright said that more critically, they estimated that at least 40 per cent of their revenue was being leaked because they lacked effective tracking systems, adding that a revenue collector could receive a fee or fine and divert it because the assembly has no mechanism to know what has been collected in real time.

She gave the assurance that they would identify new revenue streams, such as tolls and parking fees for haulage trucks that engage in economic activities around the port city, while transforming the city’s markets into revenue-generating assets through partnerships with local and international investors, announcing that Turkish, Chinese, Middle Eastern, African, and EU businesses have already expressed interest in redesigning and redeveloping the markets.

Nalerigu Turns ‘Ghost Town’ As Curfew Bites Hard

Empty street of Nalerigu during curfew time

Residents of Nalerigu and its environs in the North East Region have expressed their frustration over the imposition of curfew in the area.

Residents, especially traders and business owners, have lamented about how the curfew is affecting economic activities in the regional capital.

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, on the advice of the North East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, imposed curfew hours on Nalerigu township and its environs in the North East Region from 2:00 pm to 6:00 am, effective Sunday, July 27, 2025, until further notice.

A statement signed by the Minister of the Interior called on the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth and people of Nalerigu to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them, as well as to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area.

The statement further banned all persons in the Nalerigu township and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons, adding that persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.

This follows the killing of two students of the Nalerigu Senior High School by unidentified gunmen who stormed the campus on the night of Saturday, July 26, 2025.

Market women, traders and business owners in Nalerigu are appealing to government, to as a matter of urgency, review the curfew to enhance economic activities in the area.

“Imagine you go to the market or shop in the morning and by 2pm when businesses are about to boom it’s curfew time and you will be asked to go home. If we don’t sell how do we take care of ourselves and our families? This curfew is really affecting our businesses and the government must do something about it or we will go hungry,” they lamented.

Meanwhile, the Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area who doubles as the President of the North East Regional House of Chiefs, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, has called on government to lift the curfew imposed on Nalerigu and its environs in the North East Region.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE, indicated that workers who are not natives of Nalerigu, have taken advantage of the curfew situation to stay back home until it’s reviewed before they report back to work.

The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has issued a stern warning to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, over what he describes as poor security arrangements ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

Tema MCE bemoans state of harbour-industrial city

0

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, July 31, GNA – Ms Ebi Bright, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has bemoaned the deteriorating state of Tema, the harbour-cum-industrial city of Ghana.

Ms Bright said, “I walked purposefully through our beloved communities last week and noted afresh with shame the open spaces and community parks, which once gave us children room to play and dream. The cinemas in Communities 8 and 1, where families and friends gathered for entertainment, were all replaced by temporary structures—containers, kiosks, shacks, and some structures that defy description.”

She said this when delivering her first sessional address at the Tema Metropolitan Assembly’s (TMA) First Ordinary Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Assembly, held under the theme “Resetting and Restoring the Pride of Tema, Building a 24-hour Sustainable City at the Centre of the World.”

She indicated that this proliferation of unplanned development has destroyed the facade of the once-beautiful city, adding that the more troubling thing was that this unplanned development was happening right on TMA premises and properties.

“If we cannot keep our own house in order, how can we expect to govern and guide others to do the right thing? This is the story of too many places in our metropolis—memories of greatness overshadowed by a present and palpable decay. I believe, with every fibre of my being, that we can write a different chapter.”

The MCE noted that the City of Tema was the only planned township in Ghana, stressing that her recent tours of the metropolis have revealed a glaring disregard for the planning scheme, resulting in unauthorised developments, especially haphazard

placement of temporary structures such as kiosks, containers, and makeshift trading points.

“These issues pose not only a governance challenge but also reputational risks to the Assembly’s enforcement credibility. In the light of these developments and as the Chair of the Spatial Planning Committee, I have directed the immediate suspension of all new temporary structure permit issuance within the metropolis,” she stated.

Ms Bright indicated that this moratorium was essential as the assembly commenced a comprehensive audit to sanitise its existing records and re-establish full regulatory control.

She added that she has directed that a detailed database be compiled by the Works and Physical Planning departments with details covering the full name and contact details of the permit holder, date of original permit issuance, date of last renewal, exact location of the structure, and the type or size of the structure/container.

“Hon. Presiding Member, let me emphasise that non-compliance with this directive will not be tolerated, as I am determined and committed to changing the status quo. It is imperative that we restore discipline, transparency, and accountability to our permitting processes. This directive must be disseminated to all officers involved in the development permit process in Tema.”

According to her, the assembly could not afford to operate in administrative darkness while the public spaces in Tema risk disorder, emphasising that Tema must remain as planned and be repositioned as a Resilient Model City, reminiscent of effective urban governance.

Stephane Miezan is the President of Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Stephane Miezan is the President of Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry

The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) has welcomed the 25% policy rate announced by the Bank of Ghana, describing it as a move to cushion players within the business community.

According to the chamber, the decision aligns with a formal request submitted to the Central Bank on July 29, 2025, calling for a reduction in the policy rate to improve access to credit and spur private sector activity.

In a statement issued on July 30, 2025, as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the chamber cited improvements in macroeconomic indicators such as declining inflation, a strengthening of the cedi, and easing global financial conditions creating a conducive environment to lower interest rates.

“This policy move is a critical step toward easing the cost of doing business. It will help stimulate investment in key sectors including manufacturing, agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, and other value-added industries particularly within the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” it stated.

The chamber commended the MPC’s efforts to strike a balance between maintaining price stability and promoting inclusive, sustainable growth.

It further expressed confidence that the rate cut, when combined with ongoing fiscal consolidation and regulatory reforms, would help restore business confidence and accelerate economic transformation.

However, the GNCCI urged commercial banks and financial institutions to reflect the new policy rate in their lending rates to ensure the intended impact reaches businesses, calling on the government to provide additional support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and export-oriented industries.

“The GNCCI remains committed to working closely with the Bank of Ghana and all stakeholders to foster a business-friendly environment that drives private sector-led growth and national development,” it added.

THE PRESIDENT of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, led a delegation on Tuesday to pay a courtesy call on the Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, to explore strategic ways of empowering Ghanaian youth through football.

The meeting, held at the YEA headquarters, focused on deepening collaboration between the two institutions, with emphasis on youth development, financial support for football clubs — especially women’s teams — and using football as a tool for employment creation.

Mr. Okraku recalled the YEA’s support during the COVID-19 pandemic, when women’s footballers received monthly stipends for the first time through YEA funding. He praised the partnership as historic and impactful.

“The Football Association and YEA have a history. During the COVID era, YEA supported women’s football, allowing many of our female players to earn money regularly,” he noted.

He added that football creates jobs for young people, not just on the field, but also in refereeing, coaching, and administration. He highlighted the recent success of the Black Queens at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as proof of football’s role in youth engagement.

“In the last few weeks, the nation watched our Queens shine at WAFCON. They represent the youth and show the power of football in employment and inspiration,” he said.

YEA CEO Malik Basintale welcomed the renewed collaboration and pledged the agency’s continued support for youth-focused initiatives.

“We’re determined to leave a legacy that impacts society, and our partnership with the GFA is key to achieving that,” Basintale said.

Mr. Okraku was accompanied by Executive Council members Nana Sarfo Oduro, Eugene Noel Nobel, Samuel Aboabire, and Gideon Fosu.
