At least 10 people were killed on Tuesday when gunmen stormed a community meeting in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The attack, which occurred between 6:00pm and 7:00pm, threw the community into mourning.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants arrived in two Sport Utility Vehicles and opened fire on a peaceful gathering, mostly of Ebonyi State indigenes.

Chigozie Nweke, President of the Association of Non-Indigenes in Anambra, said the victims were attending their monthly welfare meeting.

“It was a tragic and horrifying Monday evening… mostly indigenes of Ebonyi State were brutally murdered by yet-to-be-identified gunmen,” Nweke said, urging the state government and police to act swiftly.
A survivor, Augustine Odom, who is the chairman of the Ebonyi community in Ogboji, recounted how the attackers stormed the venue.
“They collected our minutes book, ordered everyone to lie down, and then asked the chairman to stand. Moments later, they started shooting at us. About 13 of our members were killed on the spot,” he said.
The Anambra Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed 10 deaths.
“The Command has condemned the indiscriminate shooting… Police-led teams have taken over the scene and are investigating to arrest the perpetrators,” Ikenga stated.
He added that the victims were rushed to the hospital, where 10 were confirmed dead and the bodies deposited in the morgue.
The incident has renewed calls for improved security in Anambra’s rural communities, as residents fear further attacks on vulnerable groups. Authorities are now racing to identify the attackers and ensure justice for the victims.
