Soldiers in other countries in Africa will be looking at what happened in Niger” -Prof Akinyemi

Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, asserts that President Bola Tinubu and Ecowas adopted a strong stance against the Niger Coup to deter potential military coups in other African countries. In a video (21:14) during an interview with Channels TV, he emphasized that Ecowas needed to take decisive action to prevent a hunger for power among military personnel in other nations.

“It’s important to avoid a Domino effect, with the Niger Coup setting a precedent,” he cautioned. The actions taken by soldiers in other African nations might be influenced by the events in Niger. The only effective countermeasure to prevent the spread of coup attempts would be a successful resolution of the Niger coup situation. Ecowas conveyed its stance that the Niger coup had crossed a critical threshold. The coup in Niger seems to have been largely driven by a sense of self-preservation.
