Youth Group Reveal INEC Chairman Alleged Plans After May 29 Handover, Writes International Community

An association of Nigerian youths, Youths for Credible Democrats of Nigeria (YCDN), has raised the alarm that the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof.Mahmood Yakubu, is planning to run away from Nigeria after Monday, May 29 handover.

In a statement on Saturday, April 29, in Awka, the national coordinator of the group, Comrade Okeke Chinemelu-Godwin, urged the international community not to approve visa for the INEC boss.

He also asked security agencies to keep their eyes on Prof. Mahmood, so that “he would remain in the country to give account of how the commission, under his watch, organized the most floored general election in the history of Nigeria.”

“Plans by the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to run away from Nigeria after May 29 has been uncovered.

“His plan is to depart from the country to make sure that he would not give evidence before the law court how INEC under him conducted a floored election” the statement partly reads.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CSJET), has scored INEC high on the conduct of the 2023 General Elections.

The Centre particularly commended the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for displaying courage and conducting free and fair polls.

CSJET gave the commendation at a well-attended press conference in Abuja on Sunday, addressed by its Executive Secretary, Comrade Isaac Ikpa.

The group maintained that the 2023 General Elections did come without attendant challenges that were not out of place, however, writing off the whole exercise as lacking in credibility would be preposterous.

It said INEC deserved commendation for noticeable improvements in the electoral process and outcomes in the just-concluded elections, noting that conducting elections is an herculean task.

The group, therefore, warned disgruntled politicians against blackmailing the INEC chairman and the commission.

The centre also urged those displeased with the electoral process and the outcome of the 2023 General Elections to seek redress through lawful means instead of casting aspersion on the personality of the INEC chairman.
