Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has spoken out after angry residents set the Mawengo Police Station in Homa Bay County ablaze.

This happened as the residents carried the body of Albert Ojwang, a young man who allegedly died in police custody at Nairobi Central Police Station.

Albert Ojwang had earlier been detained at Mawengo Police Station before he was moved to Nairobi, where he was later pronounced dead with police alleging that he committed suicide by hitting his head against the wall.

Reacting to the incident, Senator Khalwale said that the locals set the police station ablaze to demand for justice.

“Mawego Police Station in Homa Bay on fire as locals demand justice for slain Albert Ojwang. Despite shoot to kill orders! To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

Senator Khalwale’s remarks appeared to criticize recent government orders, especially those made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

A few days ago, CS Murkomen had instructed police officers to shoot anyone who invades a police station. His statement came after another police station in Kiambu County was attacked and firearms were stolen during the 25th June Protests.

However, after public criticism, Murkomen later claimed that he had been misquoted.

Meanwhile, blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang will be laid to rest on Friday.
