Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has issued a stern warning to foreign activists following the deportation of six Kenyan nationals, accusing them of meddling in the country’s internal affairs.
The six were reportedly attempting to attend the ongoing treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, a move authorities say was politically motivated and posed a threat to national stability.
Speaking during a state function in Dodoma, President Suluhu directed Tanzania’s security agencies to remain alert and take firm action against any foreign nationals attempting to interfere with domestic politics.
“They destroyed their own country, and now they want to destroy ours. We won’t allow that,” she said, in reference to the deported Kenyans.
Among those barred from entry were prominent activists and legal figures from Kenya, including former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and veteran politician Martha Karua.
Their attempt to show solidarity with Lissu and other opposition members has sparked diplomatic and civil society reactions, with human rights groups criticizing Tanzania’s increasing clampdown on dissent.
The Tanzanian government has defended its actions, saying the deportations were lawful and aimed at preserving peace and order ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Meanwhile, opposition parties argue that the move is part of a broader effort to silence critics and intimidate reformists.
The incident has further strained relations between Tanzania and sections of Kenya’s civil society.
