Tension rose today, March 19, 2025, during Senate proceedings as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna put Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya on the spot over remarks made by Raila Odinga regarding an alleged coup.
During the heated session, Sifuna demanded that Tuya clarify the government’s position on Raila Odinga’s claim that there were plans to remove him from power through unconstitutional means. “This is a serious matter,” Sifuna said. “The people deserve to know if there is truth behind these claims.”
He further insisted that Kenyans needed assurance that democracy was not under threat. “We cannot sit here and ignore such statements,” he added.
In response, CS Soipan Tuya remained calm but firm. “The government does not engage in unconstitutional activities,” she said. “We are committed to democracy and the rule of law.”
However, she did not give a direct response to whether the claims were being investigated. This left some Senators unsatisfied.
The debate sparked strong reactions from other leaders. Senator Samson Cherargei dismissed the claims, saying, “This is just another political game by the opposition.”
However, others supported Sifuna. Senator Ledama ole Kina said, “If a leader like Raila makes such claims, they must be taken seriously.”
Many Kenyans have been left wondering whether Raila’s claims are true or just political talk. “If there is something going on, we need to know,” said John Kamau, a Nairobi resident.
As the debate continues, the country waits to see if the government will provide more details or if the claims will fade away as just another political statement.
