Top government officials from the Ministry of Education and Health on Wednesday, 05 April, visited Butere Girls High School, a national school found in Kakamega County.
Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha Wafula and Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang were the top officials who visited the school as part of the government’s emergency inspection tour in Kakamega County.
It should be noted that two schools in the county were closed early after cases of students getting infected with a deadly disease were reported.
Taking to social media on Wednesday evening, CS Nakhumicha noted that she found Butere Girls students in a good state, what she described as “High Spirits”.
She engaged the learners and reminded them of the importance of maintaining good hygiene in the school and keeping a clean environment within the school.
“Visited students of Butere Girls Secondary School as part of my emergency inspection tour in Kakamega County. I urged the students to not only focus on their studies but also focus on sanitation and hygiene for the health and safety of their student fraternity. I was pleased to find the students in high spirits,” read the update from the Health CS.
An outbreak of a strange disease in the county
At least two girls from Mukumu Girls High School reportedly succumbed to the killer disease while several others were admitted to various hospitals before the government moved with speed and closed the school.
Similar cases happened at Butere Boys where some learners also complained of stomach pain before the government also closed the school indefinitely.
No vivid details were provided on what could have caused the ailment at Butere Boys. Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa said that t analysis of samples from the learners at the Level Four Butere Sub County hospital had ruled out cholera and typhoid
