A section of senators allied to Raila Odinga led Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance have dismissed allegations that they had jumped camps to President-Elect William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
This comes few days after the senators Taita Taveta’s Johnes Mwaruma, Lamu’s Joseph Githuku, Mombasa’s Mohamed Faki, Kilifi’s Stewart Madzayo, Kwale’s Issa Boy, Garissa’s Abdulkadir Haji, Isiolo’s Dullo Fatuma Adan, and Jubilee nominated Margaret Kamar voted in favour of Kenya Kwanza team during the elections of the Speaker of the Senate.
The Coastal senators did not walk out when their colleagues stormed put of the Senate chambers after the Senate Clerk announced that their candidate for the race, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka had withdrawn his candidature.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Faki and Madzayo noted that they stood with the KKA candidate Former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi since he is from the region, and that their Azimio team did not have a candidate.
They also added that Kingi has the experience in matters governance and leadership owing to his history his tenure as governor for two terms.
“Some senators from our side walked out, but us from the Coast Region did not see any need of walking out, and also Kingi did not have an opponent. It was our duty as a house to elect our speaker, we voted for him. We want to put it clear that we did what it was expected of us as leaders, and we did add Kingi’s votes thus winning with the majority of votes,” said Madzayo.
On the Supreme Court ruling, the senators echoed their flag bearer Raila Odinga, and his running mate Martha Karua, in stating that they do not agree with the findings but will respect the court directives.
