IPOA to Probe Claims of Political Assassination Attempt Against Kamau, Munyaka

Former Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka and former Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau have accused police officers of orchestrating targeted attacks and harassment against opposition figures during a tense standoff in Murang’a County on Sunday, July 27.

Speaking at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) offices on Monday, the two politicians recounted harrowing ordeals involving plainclothes officers, whom they claimed used excessive force, issued death threats, and damaged property.

Munyaka alleged that a group of ununiformed men—whom he identified as members of a “special squad” affiliated with state operatives—ambushed him and his driver along a feeder road and forced them to chant “two-term” slogans under threat of execution.

“They told us to lie down, then fired around six shots while we were on the ground. They said unless we shouted ‘two-term,’ they would kill us. So we shouted to save our lives,” Munyaka said.

He further claimed that his luxury Range Rover was severely damaged in the ordeal, with estimated repair costs amounting to Ksh2 million.

According to Munyaka, the attackers were not ordinary criminals but “a killer squad of 101” previously mentioned by a former deputy president. He described the assailants as masked, armed with pistols and batons, and in possession of handcuffs.

Kigumo MP Joseph Munyoro corroborated the incident, stating that it occurred in his constituency and that he recognized police officers commanding the operation.

“We demanded to know who was in charge because there were claims a Member of Parliament was giving orders. These were not random attacks,” Munyoro told IPOA.

Speaking at the same venue, former MP Jamleck Kamau said he narrowly escaped death after police allegedly opened fire at his moving vehicle.

“My car was sprayed with bullets—two went through the side I was sitting on. If the car wasn’t in motion, I wouldn’t be here. That was not crowd control. That was an assassination attempt,” Kamau told journalists outside IPOA.

He added that the shooters appeared to specifically target him and were linked to political leaders in Murang’a County.

“This was a targeted hit. Some of those shooting were bodyguards of local leaders. I have names and video evidence. It’s an orchestrated plan to eliminate political opponents,” Kamau claimed.

Kamau directly appealed to President William Ruto, recalling past promises of peaceful politics and questioning why such violent suppression was taking place under his leadership.

“President Ruto, you said never again would blood be shed because of politics. But now, people are being shot at for attending church services,” he said. “I don’t fear death, but know this—if I’m killed, others will rise and continue this struggle.”

The former legislator vowed to file an official report on what he termed a “political assassination attempt” and demanded swift accountability for those responsible.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority acknowledged receiving formal complaints from the leaders and assured the public that investigations into the alleged use of excessive force and misconduct by police officers were underway.
