“We Won’t Be Intimidated” Kalonzo Speaks Out Hours After Being Stoned by Goons in Wetangula’s Turf

Tensions flared in Chwele, Bungoma County, on Friday, July 4, after several vehicles in an opposition convoy were attacked by unidentified individuals wielding crude weapons and stones.

The incident occurred during a stopover by the United Opposition team as part of their Western Kenya tour.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka strongly condemned the violence, calling it a desperate attempt by political opponents to intimidate the opposition through outdated tactics.

“What we witnessed in Chwele was the dying embers of the practice of primitive politics in Kenya,” Kalonzo said in a statement. “The United Opposition won’t be intimidated by your #WanTam-sanctioned stone-throwing goons. Not now, not today, not ever.”

Photos shared shortly after the incident showed shattered windows and damaged vehicles, reportedly part of the entourage accompanying the opposition leaders. Witnesses said the attackers appeared organized, carrying batons, stones, and other crude weapons.

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, who also addressed the matter, echoed Kalonzo’s sentiments and decried the use of violence in political discourse.

“Governments that thrive on violence are short-lived and lack legitimacy,” Gachagua said. “Leaders who resort to brutality and suppression undermine the very foundations of good governance and true democracy.”

Gachagua further called for national unity and respect for human rights, urging Kenyans to reject any form of political coercion. “Peace, justice, and respect for human rights are the pillars of a progressive society,” he added.

Earlier in the day, while addressing supporters in Busia, Gachagua criticized ODM leader Raila Odinga for what he termed as decades of betrayal toward the Luhya community.

He accused Raila of sidelining the region after elections, especially following political handshakes that left voters in the cold.

“We from Mt Kenya have also been misused,” Gachagua told the crowd. “Ruto promised us development but delivered betrayal.”

The opposition’s Western tour, aimed at consolidating support across key counties, has faced increasing hostility, raising concerns over political tolerance and the safety of campaign activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

No arrests had been made by press time, and local authorities have yet to issue a statement on the violence in Chwele.
