The upcoming Mbeere North by-election in Embu County is set to be highly competitive, with musician-turned-politician Newton Kariuki, popularly known as Karish, going head-to-head with seasoned lawyer Muriuki Njagagua.
The seat fell vacant after Geoffrey Ruku was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, replacing Justin Muturi.
Karish, a three-term MCA for Muminji Ward with over 100 recorded songs, is running on the Democratic Party (DP) ticket.
The DP is part of a new opposition alliance led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The party is chaired by ex-National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.
Njagagua, on the other hand, is backed by President William Ruto’s UDA. He is a respected lawyer, eloquent speaker, and chair of Consolidated Bank’s board. Njagagua narrowly lost the 2022 election to Ruku by just 647 votes, making him a strong contender.
With Gachagua’s camp gaining momentum in Mt. Kenya and Ruto keen to retain the seat, the Mbeere North race is expected to be fiercely contested.
