DCP MPs Plot Murkomen Impeachment Over ‘Shoot to Kill’ Remarks

Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji addresses attendees during a prayer and fundraising event held at Embu University grounds in Embu County on June 28, 2025.

Lawmakers allied to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) have indicated plans to introduce an impeachment motion against Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over his recent “shoot to kill” comments.

Gitonga Mukunji, the Manyatta MP, is heading the effort. He shared this during a prayer and fundraising event held at Embu University grounds with Akurino faithful on Saturday.

Mukunji criticized Murkomen accusing him of encouraging extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances. He argued that these acts have become frequent under the Kenya Kwanza government. He called on Parliament to act and carry out its duty to protect Kenyans’ lives, rights, and freedoms.

“This Parliament must stand firm. The Interior Cabinet Secretary has overstepped his mandate by issuing unconstitutional directives that endanger lives. We cannot sit back and watch,” Mukunji urged as he called on lawmakers to back the motion.

The push for impeachment comes on the heels of mounting public outrage. Murkomen faced criticism after remarks in Kiambu County where many accused him of supporting police violence during protests.

Even so, Mukunji admitted there might be hurdles ahead. He said the impeachment effort could struggle because the executive still holds sway over a lot of lawmakers.

“Let’s be honest, Parliament has largely been captured. But we must try,” he said.

Supporting the decision, Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia took aim at Murkomen and accused him of overstepping his role as Interior CS.

Kaguchia said, “The CS has no authority to order police to shoot and kill. Such orders violate the Constitution and must be condemned.”

The DCP lawmakers at the same time accused the government of planning violence on June 25 during the protests. They alleged the state used the chaos to justify a harsh response against young people, paint peaceful protesters as criminals, and distract from real public concerns.
