Kenyans Lament Receiving Unexplained Messages from KRA Demanding Them to Pay These Tax Penalties

A wave of confusion is sweeping across Kenyan social media as citizens report receiving unexplained and seemingly random messages from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), demanding payment of pending taxes and penalties.

The alerts, which appear system-generated, warn recipients of owed “principal tax” amounts due by June 30, 2025, in order to benefit from a 100% waiver on penalties and interest.

Twitter user @Bossyator ignited the conversation by posting a screenshot and calling out what he termed “DESPOTS tactics to scare people.”

Many others chimed in with similar complaints, questioning the credibility and clarity of the messages.

Some mentioned tax amounts they had never heard of before, while others were stunned to be categorized as VAT payers or landlords without clear explanation.

Despite the growing uproar, KRA has yet to issue an official statement in simple language to clarify the origin, legitimacy, or context of these messages.

The lack of transparency has left many citizens feeling frustrated, anxious, and unsure of how to proceed—especially those unfamiliar with taxation procedures or who registered on iTax through third parties.

As the deadline approaches, Kenyans continue to demand answers from KRA in terms they can understand.
