Gen Z Protest Organizers Must Be Held Accountable, Says Cherargei

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called for strict accountability measures against individuals allegedly organizing the planned Gen Z protests set for Wednesday, June 25.

He insisted that anyone behind the demonstrations should be held personally responsible if lives are lost or property is destroyed.

His remarks come as young Kenyans ramp up calls for nationwide protests to demand an end to police brutality and extrajudicial killings. While acknowledging that Article 37 of the Constitution protects the right to peaceful and unarmed demonstrations, Cherargei stressed that such rights should not endanger public safety.

“The planners and financiers of the upcoming Gen Z demos must be held accountable at an individual level in case of loss of lives, destruction of property, or disruption of peace in the country,” he said.

The senator also warned Kenyans against marching to State House, describing it as a protected zone under Kenyan law.

“State House is a protected area that is a no-go zone for demonstrations as per the law,” Cherargei warned.

He further urged the government to act against non-governmental organizations allegedly supporting the protests.

Cherargei called on the NGOs regulatory board to revoke the licenses of activist groups he claimed were fueling unrest through violent demonstrations.

“The NGOs regulatory board must deregister activist organisations that are fanning instability in the country through violent demonstrations,” he said.
