Police Constable James Mukhwana, who is being held over the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’, has made a bold move through his legal team.
Mukhwana is now asking to be placed under witness protection, saying he is ready to reveal everything about what happened on the night of June 7, 2025, while Ojwang’ was in custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.
His lawyers—Kevin Ondago, Clinton Mwale, and Bietta Wavinya—have confirmed that their client is no longer interested in seeking release on bail.
They say Mukhwana fears for his life and believes it is safer for him to remain in custody under protection until he has testified.
In a written message passed through his lawyers, Mukhwana gave a sorrowful account of what led to Ojwang’s tragic death.
He said, “This is the truth of what happened. Ojwang’ was not meant to be killed but to be disciplined as per the instruction of the OCS Talaam, who was acting on orders from DIG Eliud Lagat.
I am sorry for the death of Ojwang’. May God help his family heal. I know it is painful.”
This new statement adds weight to Mukhwana’s earlier confession that revealed a chain of command leading to top police bosses.
He admits that he was part of the group that followed the orders to punish Ojwang’, but insists the goal was to intimidate him, not end his life.
Mukhwana’s decision to come clean, even at the risk of his own safety, has captured the attention of Kenyans.
His legal team says he is now ready to cooperate fully with IPOA and testify against senior officers involved.
