The National Police Service has bowed to pressure and released the names of six police officers who were suspended on Monday over the controversial death of Homa Bay teacher Albert Omondi Ojwang.
Six police officers from Central Police Station in Nairobi have were suspended as investigations into the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang while in police custody continue.
The suspended officers include the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samson Talaam, duty officer Samuel Ng’ang’a, Corporal Charles Muruki, and constables Debian Lusweti, Peter Kimani, and Evaline Kanyiri.
Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja announced the suspension of the six officers on Monday, June 9, 2025. This move comes after growing public anger and pressure over the suspicious circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.
“To allow for a full, fair, and quick investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Inspector-General has directed that the officers be interdicted immediately,” said police spokesperson Michael Muchiri in an official statement.
When news of Ojwang’s death first broke, police claimed that he died after hitting his head on the wall inside the police station cells. They said he passed away while being taken to Mbagathi Hospital for treatment.
However, the results of a recent autopsy tell a different story. Forensic experts confirmed that the injuries found on Albert Ojwang’s body were not self-inflicted, raising serious concerns about what really happened to him in custody.
This comes at a time when autopsy reports have revealed that Ojwang died from strangulation, head injuries, neck compression, and multiple soft tissue trauma.
