How A Dream Plot in Murang’a Turned into a 5.6 Million Shilling Nightmare for a Trusting Buyer

A land dream turned into heartbreak after a woman from Murang’a was arrested for allegedly conning a client out of KSh 5.6 million in a fake land sale. Margaret Wanjiru Kamau, the suspect, was taken into police custody following months of pursuit.

She is accused of deceiving Alice Wanjiku, a hopeful land buyer, into believing she was purchasing genuine property only to discover it did not exist.

According to private detective Jane Mugo, who has been following the case, Wanjiru was working closely with well-connected land cartels. Shockingly, the suspect had pending warrants of arrest in several towns including Maragua, Kenol, and Ruiru places where she had allegedly pulled off similar tricks. Authorities believe she has been on the run, hiding behind fake documents and smooth-talking schemes.

Wanjiku and her family found the advertised land online and followed up with hopes of building a future home. All seemed legitimate until they attempted the ownership transfer, and everything began to fall apart. The land was not available, and the seller could no longer be reached.

It was only after raising alarm and seeking professional help that the long trail of deception was exposed.

Detective Mugo emphasized the importance of verifying property ownership through official government channels before making payments. She noted that land fraud has become increasingly common, especially in online spaces where scammers hide behind digital anonymity.

The arrest brings some relief to the victim, but also serves as a loud warning to all Kenyans—be careful who you trust with your dreams. Always involve a lawyer, visit the land in person, and check with the Ministry of Lands before releasing even a shilling.
