President William Ruto is presiding over the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations at the newly refurbished Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.
This year’s theme is “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs,” aimed at advancing the government’s commitment to harnessing Lake Victoria’s potential for economic development.
The stadium, which has undergone a significant upgrade, now boasts a seating capacity of 12,000, up from the previous 2,000.
The Sh500 million facelift includes new terraces, improved security features, and enhanced amenities to accommodate national events.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo confirmed that the renovations were completed ahead of schedule, ensuring the venue’s readiness for the celebrations .
In the past week, President Ruto has launched several transformative projects across the Nyanza region.
In Kisumu, he inaugurated the Sh3 billion Kabonyo Kanyagwal Fish Project, a comprehensive facility designed to boost the blue economy through training, research, and aquaculture development as well as inspected affordable housing projects.
In Homa Bay, the President launched the construction and rehabilitation of the Homa Bay Pier, aiming to reduce transport costs and stimulate local trade.
He also issued an operational permit to Victory Farms, East Africa’s largest fish producer, which plans to feed two billion people by 2050, launched last mile electrification and roads tarmacking.
As part of the government’s commitment to improving living standards, President Ruto launched an affordable housing project in Homa Bay, with plans to construct 7,000 units. This initiative aims to address the housing deficit and create job opportunities for the youth.
The President’s noted that the focus on the blue economy was evident in the various projects launched in the region. These initiatives are expected to create employment opportunities, enhance trade, and improve the livelihoods of the residents.
